Peterson Behavior Junior/Senior

High School

WELCOME Peterson Behavior Junior/Senior High School is designed to provide alternative instruction to students in grades six through twelve who have been temporarily assigned from other schools throughout the Clark County School District. The goal is to assist students in changing their behaviors, so that they may successfully return to their regular campus. To ensure this return, students are required to regularly attend school, adopt and maintain a positive attitude, follow all school rules and regulations, and perform well academically. Students must physically attend Peterson Behavior Program for a minimum of four weeks. Each student must also be away from the sending school for a minimum of nine weeks unless misbehavior dictates otherwise. The administration and staff believe that all students can, with the necessary effort, behave appropriately in the educational setting. Therefore, the Peterson staff is dedicated to providing your student with ample opportunities to leave past mistakes behind and look toward a successful future. Since Peterson is a behavioral school a plan for school success that consists of weekly themes is in place in order to facilitate change in your student’s conduct. The purpose of this handbook is to provide students and parents with the information needed to become familiar with the Peterson school regulations, expectations, and procedures that, if followed, will ensure that your student’s stay will be short and successful. Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call 799-6610 during our office hours from 6:30a.m. – 3:30p.m. Monday through Friday.

Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)

According to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), school records of students are confidential. FERPA allows school officials to provide what is called “directory information” without parental consent. However, public notice must be made before directory information may be made available. Parent notification is included in the Back to School Report and registration materials inform parents of the right to restrict the distribution of directory information. Directory information includes the student’s name, address, grade level, date and place of birth, participation in officially recognized activities and sports, weight and height if a member of an athletic team, years of attendance, degrees and awards received, and schools attended. In addition, two federal laws require local educational agencies to provide military recruiters, upon request, with three directory information categories – names, addresses and telephone listings – unless parents have advised the school that they do not want their student’s information disclosed without their prior written consent. Information other than directory information is not released without the written consent of the parent/guardian, eligible student or by court order. Parents or guardians also have a right to review educational records kept by the district. To inspect these records, parents/guardians should contact the principal to schedule a records review. In addition, parents may by written request, to the principal of the school, challenge the contents of student records that they believe are inaccurate. School personnel are to respond to all requests within a reasonable length of time not to exceed ten (10) school days from the date of receipt of the request. A copy of school district Regulation 5125.1 pertaining to the education rights and privacy of parents and students is available upon request from the principal’s office. The regulation can also be accessed through the Clark County School District website at www.ccsd.net. Questions regarding educational records at the school should be directed to the principal in writing. Parents or eligible students have a right to file a complaint regarding the district’s compliance with these requirements by contacting the Family Policy Compliance Office, U.S. Department of Education.

TRANSPORTATION Students living more than two miles from the campus will be provided transportation to the Peterson campus. Therefore, all CCSD rules and regulations must be adhered to or bus privileges can and will be revoked.

TRANSPORTATION PROBLEMS If a student misses the bus, or, it does not stop at the assigned pick-up point, the student should:

1. Call and alert the school’s office staff at 799-6610. 2. Notify transportation at 799-8110 3. Have their parent bring them to school.

Missing the bus is not an excused absence! If a student does not ride the bus for three consecutive days, the parents will have to notify transportation in order to regain transportation privileges.

Page 5

STUDENTS TRANSPORTED BY PRIVATE VEHICLES Parents who drive their children to school are reminded to yield to school busses. At dismissal time, please pick your child up in the parking lot area on the SOUTH side of the school. THIS IS A NON-DRIVING CAMPUS FOR STUDENTS. Students found driving to school are subject to discipline and vehicle towed at owners expense.

ATTENDANCE PROCEDURES

Students who are absent from school for any reason are required to return to school with a note from their parent or guardian. The note should indicate the student’s name, student number, date of absence, reason for the absence, and the telephone number that the parent can be reached for verification. Notes should be turned into the school’s attendance clerk. It is vital for students and parents to understand that good attendance is one of the factors considered when determining the release of a student to a comprehensive school. Failure to regularly attend school may result in a referral to court.

SCHOOL MEDICAL ASSISTANCE

The Peterson Behavior School does have a First Aid Safety Assistant (FASA) on site. The office is equipped to act as an emergency station and is not equipped to handle serious injuries or emergencies. THE SCHOOL MUST HAVE AN EMERGENCY TELEPHONE NUMBER WHERE THE PARENT CAN BE REACHED AT ALL TIMES. If a student becomes ill while at school, the student should report to the office, so that the parent or guardian can be notified immediately.

MEDICATION DURING SCHOOL HOURS

Authorization to administer medication is required for a student to take prescription medicine during school hours. A Medical Release Form (CCF-643) shall be completed and signed by the parent/guardian and a witness. The prescribing doctor or the parent/guardian must state in writing the name, dosage, time of administration, and the nature of the medication. If any changes occur in the type, time, and dosage of medication, a new CCF-643 must be completed.
