We~twood Works Roll of Honour 1st World War bull Report I first called at Westwood Works (closed engineering factory) to see Mr les Sharp (EngineerCaretaker) who informed me that there were no Memorial Boards anywhere in the old works but suggested that the Museum might have them

I spent a whole morning in Peterborough Museum basement copying names from boards ie Eye parish WW1 and Westwood Works WWII but the Curator Mr Martin Howe had no knowledge of the one which I was seeking He suggested two people who may be able to help me

Roger Negus employed at Thorpe Wood Police Station had recently helped a local author with information on WWI Roger is a member of The Soke Military Society and he offered to insert an article in its Society magazine asking if any of its members know the location of the memorial boards So far there has been no response

The second contact was Bert Slater a former employee at Westwood Works He was assisting the Curator with a Baker Perkins Exhibition in August 1993 Bert has looked into the problem of locating the boards at all the sites he worked in Peterborough including the new Werrington site but again without success I agreed to give him copies of my lists for his exhibition display in the hope that any visitor (ex-employee) could estaBlish where the lists originated This proved to be fruitless

A personal friend and ex-employee for 30 years plus told me that during the period of WWI the Westwood Works was owned by Werner amp Perkins With Werner being a german partner the name was changed to Baker Perkins as a tactful gesture possibly to save it being bombed

The Rev Nicholas Chubb Chaplain for Peterborough Hospitals (where I work) suggested that I contact a friend of his George Dixon of 8 Priory Road Peterborough George was reputed for his knowledge of local War Mems but alas he coulnt help me He suggested that I contact a retired former employee Jim beboo This done I then telephoned each of the following after each one recommended the next one

Jim Deboo Former employee at Westwood Works John S Hardy II Company Secretary Harry Giltrap 11 Group Publicity Manager Ted Thain Manager John Warwick 11 Plant Engineer of the 1908 building

None could shed any light on the matter

After an exhaustive search I now wonder whether there are any Boards at all

I suppose it is possible that someone during the First WW period decided to make a note of those employees that had gone to war

Report

The first listing of Scout memorial names was copied from the Peterborough Standard 30th Nov 1951 by Gwen Beatty from the Peterborough Library newspaper records

Win Noble said middotthat theScout HQ was in Trinity Street in an outshybuilding at the rear of Peterborough Museum She believes that the building which the scouts used was the former mortuary (now demolished) when the Museum building housed the former Infirmary

She further said that the Rovers used to hold an induction ceremony for recruits which in some way involved the use of a Jug and Bowl When St Pauls HQ was vacated the memorial plaque and Jug (bowl missing) wereput into archives somewhere

I visited Peterborough Library seeking information on the Scouting movement and the Trinity Street HQ but could not find anything more I left my name and telephone No with the librarian

The librarian contacted me on 21194 to say

a) No photographs available of Trinity Street as far as he knows

b) The War Memorial plaque is presently in the care of Mr R Ward of 79 Guntons Road Newborough

On Tuesday 15th Feb 1994 I visited Ron Ward at his home by pre-arrangement He showed me the Scout memorial which I photographed and measured Size 762 mm square He provided me with a copy of a letter from Len Voller who was the district scoutmaster at the time of the memorials dedication This letter gives additional information about the memorial Ron also provided me with a copy of The Dedication Order of Service and I gave Ron ~ copy of the newspaper report for his information

The Memorial Plaque has had several homes over the years but no-one seems to recall any dates when it was actually moved First Trinity Streetthen St Pauls Scout ampGuide H Q at the junction of Occupation Road and Lincoln Road then to Granville Street District HQ and finally into storage at Newborough about 1984 Apparently over the years had suffered some damage and it was being restored by Mr R Ward

Mr Ward informed me that he is negotiating to have it hung at Peterborough City Town Hall

Scout memorial No 85
