Dear Parents,

My letter in this second to last week of Term 2 covers diverse topics and some more requests for you as committed parents.

Meet the Writers and meet Eddie WooStudents around South Australia, including our own, have had great opportunities to meet highly skilled practitioners over the past week. Read the report from two of our Year 7s on the authors they met and listened to at last week’s “Meet the Writers”.

St Dominic’s Priory College

Primary Newsfrom Ms. Cate O’Leary, Primary School Coordinator

During th is term we have been investigating measuring Area and Perimeter. We discovered that to measure the perimeter of an object, you need to measure the whole way around it and to measure the area of an object, you need to measure the space inside it. We also discovered that if you want to

In and around the classrooms:

YEAR 2

compare the measurements of a number of objects, it is important to be consistent with your chosen unit of measure. Here are some snaps of us doing just that in our classroom!

‘If we only did things that were easy, we wouldn’t actually be learning anything. We’d

be practicing things we already knew’ - David Dockterman

We are all looking forward to next week’s Arts Showcase. It is one of our more informal gatherings but the classes

are enthusiastic to share their creative talents with you. The evening will be held in the Hall and will showcase artwork, drama performance in either dance, poetry or movement and a musical item. Below are the starting times for each section:

Reception and Year 1 6:00-6:20pm Year 2 and 3 6:25-6:45pm Year 4 and 5 6:50-7:10pm Year 6 is at 7:15- 7:35pm

We remind you that punctuality is very important. We cannot wait for any late arriving students.

Student Engagement Final Assembly: We thank the Year 6 Class for hosting yesterday and congratulate them on their organisation, poise and participation. They are reflective and positive leaders of the Primary School and the variety of talent is always a joy to see.

Thursday Night Netball: This Thursday night will be the last game for the term and the coaches are very pleased with our players’ enthusiasm and teamwork. Our school has had a very successful season; last week we had 3 wins and a very exciting nail biting game with the team finally being defeated by 1 goal. We are currently organising for the Term 3 season. Numbers will determine how many teams we can offer and all permission forms should have been handed in. Details will be sent ASAP.

Don’t forget to label all clothing: We have several items without names in our lost property. Could all parents please check their daughters’ blazer and beret as sometimes students pick up the wrong item of clothing.

Netball Carnival: The Year 4, 5 and 6 and 7 classes are looking forward to next Thursday’s Netball Carnival. Please check that your daughter is all prepared for the day and has adequate clothing to suit the expected weather conditions. Thank you to the parents who have offered to help. Your support is always appreciated.

Peter Pan: We hope to see many of you at the school production of Peter Pan, on either Thursday, Friday or Saturday night. We were fortunate to have a small preview at our Assembly and we can’t wait to see the whole show.

Shining Star MomentWe would like to congratulate our Music teacher Mrs Anna Sordillo who last week was nominated for the National ABIA Designer Dream Award. She has won four state titles in the last consecutive four years in SA. She went on to win the title and holds the number one position for best wedding ceremony music in Australia.

Crows Cup CarnivalOn Friday the 22nd of June, students from Years 5, 6 and 7 participated in the Crows Cup Carnival in the sport of football. We had lots of fun and enjoyed versing other schools. During the day, we played eight games and placed 2nd overall out of 16 schools. It was a tough competition as we lost a few games and won some too! We think that everyone enjoyed this day and would love to do it again next year.

Millie, Lucy and Ella (Year 5)

SACPSSA Athletics CarnivalOn Tuesday 19th June, St Dominic’s students from across Years 4, 5, 6 and 7 participated in the SACPSSSA Athletics Carnival at SANTOS. The girls had a fantastic day and represented St Dominic’s with pride. We had too many individual places to mention but all girls received a ribbon for an event that they participated in which is an outstanding achievement. We narrowly finished second overall by a few points. Congratulations to Charlotte Kretschmer (U/10) and Ella Copeland (U/11) who were appointed Individual Age Champions, and also to the U/11 girls who won overall Age Champions. Well done girls.

Mrs Michelle Richter

“I really enjoyed the Athletics Carnival. We all had a great day and competed very well and it was great because we cheered very loudly for each other.” - Charlotte Year 5We would like to thank Mrs Richter, Mrs Baumber for preparing the girls and Mrs Copeland for her considerable effort with support on the day. We would also like to thank the many parents who were able to attend for all, or part of the day, to encourage our budding athletes.

Butterfly Badges Supporting the Deafness Foundation

Did you know that butterflies are deaf? Yet they are beautiful, admired and communicate through the wonder of nature. Hopefully every time you see a Butterfly Badge pinned on your daughter’s uniform, it will remind you of this interesting fact.

Annually, St Dominic’s Priory College supports the Deafness Foundation through The Butterfly Badge Appeal. This appeal is traditionally taken on by our Year 9 Middle School Leaders, who have the responsibility of selling badges and keyrings to students each morning during Class Period. This year our Year 6 SRCs also joined in and sold merchandise to the Primary School. Collectively we were able to raise $960 which will be forwarded to The Deafness Foundation. Well done and thank you to those who reached into their pockets and donated to this worthy cause.

Meet the WritersThursday 21 June 2018Meet the Writers was an event where we were able to meet authors such as Phil Cummings, Dan McGuiness, Sally Hardy and the two keynote speakers, Jackie French and John Marsden. We were able to learn about how to start careers in writing or illustrating and the authors’ journey to becoming successful.

Livia Truong

At the Meet the Writers Festival, I was lucky enough to meet and listen to the author Phil Cummings and writer Sally Hardy. Phil Cummings has written many children’s books, novels, poems and songs based on events from his life and childhood. Phil was very interesting to listen to and he is also funny. Sally Hardy is a playwright who has written scripts for school productions and local theatre companies. Sally Hardy has won numerous awards for her scripts and some of her plays have even become known internationally in places such as London, England. Sally Hardy was very fascinating to listen to and she was very inspirational to young writers.
