Welcome Sale of Life ServicesThe Trustee has promised to update members on the progress of events reported
in their letter of 13 December 2004 relating to the sale of Life Services and the
associated changes affecting the Pension Scheme. We intend to include an
update in the Report to members, which will be sent out to all members at the
end of June. In the meantime may I reassure you that the changes have no
impact on the level or payment of your pensions.
Lesley Williams
Secretary to the Trustee
Arthur BoneWe regret to report that former Director
of Pearl Assurance, Arthur Bone, died on
16 January at the age of 96.
When he retired in December 1976, Arthur
said how proud he was that he had been able
to complete 50 very happy years’ service with
such great company as Pearl.
His long and distinguished career started in
1926 as a school leaver when he had been
advised to join Pearl, “as he ought to become an actuary” in view of his flair for
figures. True to form, he studied hard and qualified as a Fellow of the Institute
of Actuaries in 1937. The peak of Arthur’s career with Pearl was when he was
elected to the Board of Directors in 1970.
During his life at Pearl, he was passionate about music and served as Chairman
of Pearl’s Orchestral Society. He made more than 50 concert appearances as
leading violinist. Arthur was also a most active President of the Sports Club’s
Recorded Music Society.
Arthur met his wife Ida, who predeceased him, while she was working in the
Policy Department.
Secretary of the Pearl Chief Office Pensioners’ Association, Colin Jeffryes, says:
“Arthur was a stalwart member of the Association and thoroughly enjoyed
attending the Reunions on a regular basis. Even at the age of 93, and with the
help of his zimmer frame, he was present at the October 2002 Reunion at the
Bonnington Hotel in London – thanks to his only daughter taking him by car
– a true sign of Arthur’s determination to be with his fellow pensioner friends
and colleagues from the old Pearl days, which meant so much to him.
Readers will be sad to
learn of the death of
former Divisional Manager
Bob Bergin on
25 March aged 77.
Bob started his career at
Pearl in 1953 as a district
agent in Birmingham South.
He was soon promoted to
ADM at Saltley and in 1964
he was appointed Ordinary
Branch Inspector. When he
was promoted to District Manager for Prontypridd, where
he worked for seven years, he was reported to have been
the first non-Welsh manager appointed in Wales.
In 1972 Bob was appointed Field Staff Training Officer at
Chief Office in London and promoted to AA Divisional
Manager in 1974. He retired in 1989 having served the
Company for nearly 37 years.
Former General Manager, Edgar Evans, recalls Bob’s great
love of sailing. He sailed his dinghy, whenever he had spare
time during his long career, to enable him to relax and enjoy
himself with his family and friends. After he retired, Bob
spent more time on the golf course. He was such a keen
golfer that even his holiday home in Spain was situated on
a golf course and this is where he had spent and enjoyed
so many happy times with his family and friends.
Bob was a very proud and caring family man, having
married his wife Shirley in 1954. They had three children
and there are now several grandchildren.
Hon. Secretary of the Pearl Chief Office Pensioners’
Association, Colin Jeffryes, was one of so many who
benefited from Bob’s tremendous ability to support and
encourage others in a very positive way. He comments:
“Bob endeared himself to everyone he came into contact
with. He was such a friendly, kind and generous man
who generated geniality and enthusiasm. As well as being
one of our members, he was a regular supporter of
the ‘B’ Pensioners’ Association events.”
The funeral took place at Haywards Heath, Sussex,
and many of his Pearl friends and colleagues attended.
On behalf of all Pearl pensioners, we offer our sincere
sympathy to Shirley and all the family.
Welcome to the June 2005
issue of Pension News, the
magazine for HHG pensioners.
Inside you will find a selection
of the interesting letters and
photographs we received in
response to the ‘Who do you
recognise?’ article in the last
issue. Clearly we jogged some
memories so please keep
them coming!
The observant among you
will notice that we have
incorporated the retirements
and obituaries listings into the
magazine. We hope you like
the new, combined format.
It is always nice to hear what
you have been up to and
we have several reports of
pensioners’ association events.
A diary of forthcoming events
and contact details for
the various pensioners’
associations can be found,
as usual, on the back cover.
Please send any letters,
articles or photographs for
publication, as well as any
comments you may have, to:
Pension News, Staff Pensions,
The Pearl Centre, Lynch
Wood, Peterborough PE2 6FY.
We hope you all have a
wonderful summer!

“Bob endeared himself to everyone he came into contact with”
Some names to facesIn the December 2004 issue, we printed this photograph
and asked readers if they recognised any of the faces.
Beryl Higginson has replied and provided a full list!
Beryl writes: I know all the girls as I worked with them at
Attringham Hall, and this was taken in the grounds after
we had had lunch.
From left to right were Jean Battles, Madge (I cannot remember
her surname), Joan Brown, Vera Seabrook, Beryl Gage (now
Higginson) and Peggy Ellis.’
The black and white photo (December
2004 issue, reprinted on previous
page) took me back a long way, but
I cannot put any names to the ladies
in the picture.
However, I’m answering your request
for recollections of the ‘old days’ by
sending some of my own. I joined the
Company at their Head Office in High
Holborn in 1930 and was to stay there
until I left to get married in 1938.
My department was Accounts No.1
where, after serving my time as a
junior, I was attached to the clerical
staff, although later I became a
shorthand typist where I spent
many happy years.
I am enclosing a photograph of
the other typists taken on the roof
where one had a wonderful view
of that part of Holborn, although
later on I understand it became
forbidden territory! This snap
was taken about 1934.
I was also a member of the
Gymnastic section, and played
inter-departmental netball in
Lincolns Inn Fields before work.
In those days before the war, the Pearl
Opera Group produced an annual
musical show, put on at one of the
London Theatres – I remember
particularly ‘Rose Marie’ and ‘White
Horse Inn’ – and every summer there
was a Sports Day held on their own
ground at New Malden in Surrey –
happy days!
My husband – Clifford Hodges –
worked in the Fire & Accident
Accounts Department, and was a
member of the Orchestral Society for
whom he composed suites of music
and fantasias on Christmas Carols.
During the war years we both worked
at Uplands House, Pease Pottgage, just
outside Crawley where many of the
staff lived, and this was before it was
developed into the new town that
it is today.
In October 2004 I celebrated my 90th
birthday, but I still remember with
much pleasure the years I worked for
the Pearl and the many friendships
I made there.Winifred Hodges
Another photo challenge! ‘K’ Pearlpensioners’luncheonAround 50 ‘K’ Pearl Pensioners
met for their Spring Luncheon
at Titwood Bowling Club,
Pollokshields, Glasgow on
Thursday 7th April. After a
very enjoyable meal, President
Jim McConnacher and others
contributed humorous stories,
a little magic and a Scottish
song to round off a very happy
occasion. And, of course, it was
‘good to talk’!
It is hoped to arrange another
event or excursion in the autumn.
Rena Matheson
‘M & CC’ canal trip
Last August, 50 of our members had a fabulous day when they took a canal boat trip from Skipton in the Yorkshire dales.
The scenery was stunning and the boat crew looked after all our needs to make it a day to remember.
Brian Mann
You asked for any old photographs of the good old days. Well the only one
I have is of our office staff.
Maybe you could work out where they are now. Perhaps they would like to meet
up sometime – that would be interesting!
The photo was taken about 18 years ago and many of the agents would be
pensioners now.
By the way, when I first joined Pearl we had a lovely manager in Ealing HH
division. He was a man called Ron Scott who took early retirement. I wonder
if he reads Pension News. He would know many of the agents, but where
is he now?
Joan Fisher
Recalling ‘the old days’
Chance for Pearl Pensioners to return to former Chief OfficeMembers of London and the Peterborough Club have a
unique opportunity to return to their old ‘home’ and Pearl’s
former Chief Office in Holborn, London on Saturday
8th October 2005.
The Pearl Chief Office Pensioners’ Association is celebrating
its 40th anniversary this year and its Committee is organising
a special Luncheon Reunion in the Grand Ballroom at
252 High Holborn, which is now the five star Renaissance
London Chancery Court Hotel.
The cost for PCOPA members is £30 per head and £37.50
for non-members. Each member of London and
Peterborough may bring a guest. Numbers are limited
and a full house of 250 is anticipated; only a few tickets
remain available.
If you did work for Pearl in Holborn and are interested in
attending this very special occasion, please write to the
PCOPA’s Hon. Secretary, Colin Jeffryes, without delay for
more information – address on back page. Also, if you
would like to join the Pensioners’ Association, it costs
a mere £3.00 for life membership.
A full report and photographs will be in the December issue
of Pension News.

‘X’ Pearl Pensioners’weekend in Belgium
Once again a party of X Division
pensioners and friends set off for a
weekend on the continent.
Travelling by coach, and after a good
ferry crossing, the party travelled on to
Ostend in Belgium and arrived in time
to be treated to a welcome drink by
the hotel staff before dinner on the
Friday evening. The hotel was very
good and situated central to the town
and also within walking distance of
the promenade and beach. After
dinner, many took advantage of
this facility to stretch their legs and
blow away the cobwebs after the
day’s journey.
On Saturday morning the driver took
us to a Dutch village called Sluis
situated at the end of one of the
canals. This proved to be a pretty little
place with some attractive shops, lots
of flowers and water fountains and
also a shop where one could watch
clogs being made.
Then it was on to Bruges – a beautiful
town. Trips could be taken either by
boat on the canals, horse and carriage,
or by bus. All proved to be very
informative and interesting. The shops
abounded with lace, leather goods
and chocolates. There were also many
lovely cafes to visit for afternoon tea
and pastries.
Sunday saw us off again – this time to
Brussels – where people were free to
do their own thing. Some spent time
in the beautiful cathedral, while others
walked to the main square where
celebrations were taking place to mark
the 60th anniversary of the liberation
of Brussels at the end of WW2. There
were parades of army vehicles, both
British and American, past and
present. Bands were playing and
people were dancing and singing to
the 1940s style music.
Soon it was time to start our journey
home. The hotel manager and staff
came to wave us off and wish us ‘bon
voyage’. They really had been most
friendly and hospitable. A visit was
made to the hypermarket at Boulogne
before boarding the ferry at Calais for
our crossing to Dover and home.
A good time was enjoyed by all. Our
thanks should go to our Secretary Ray
Ridout and his wife Marion for all the
hard work they put in to arranging
another good weekend.
A host of golden daffodilsThis is the wonderful sight that greeted Cumbrian Pearl Pensioners as they arrived in Cockermouth for
their Spring Luncheon on 13 April at the Trout Hotel, being situated only 50 yards from Wordsworth’s
House in Main Street.
The house grounds, the flower beds all over
the town and the banks of the river Cocker
are all adorned by hosts of the proud golden
flowers that greet travellers from far and
wide who journey to see their beauty.
William Wordsworth is said to have written
the famous poem on the shores of Ullswater
in 1802.
I wandered lonely as a cloud, that floats on
high o’er vales and hills;
When all at once I saw a crowd, a host of
golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees, fluttering
and dancing in the breeze.
Allan Hodgson
AnniversariesBelated congratulations to Arthur
and Katherine Alexander on celebrating
their 56th wedding anniversary on
20th November 2004.
Another active year has passed
by with the Association.
We had lunch at the Mayflower,
Bournemouth in October with
39 members attending. The Mayflower
Theatre, Southampton has again
been popular with 34 members
attending for the show CHICAGO.
Once more, a good time was had
by all.
May saw another lunch at
Bournemouth with 44 attending.
The Annual General Meeting
followed and Tony Walker
became the new President.
A further visit to the theatre at
Southampton was attended by
34 members, this time for Andrew
Lloyd Webber's Starlight Express.
The committee is trying to arrange
a tour of the Isle of Wight in the
summer. Members will be notified
if they are successful.
In spite of the tragic loss of two
members, including my Kathleen,
the numbers have seen a small
increase and members still appear
to be young at heart.

1. Take more exercise. Exercise not only makes us feel fitter, more alert
and younger, it also prevents many of the disabling conditions we associate
with later life.
2. Give up smoking. It's the biggest single risk to your health after inactivity.
It's not just lungs and hearts that are at risk, smoking will slow down your
rate of healing. That's bad news if you need an operation or injure yourself.
3. Keep socially and mentally active. Having a strong network of family
and friends and a range of activities is vital to your health. The best remedy
we have for some of the mental problems of older age is to keep on
challenging the grey matter.
4. Drink more water. Many of us are slightly dehydrated. This interferes with
digestion and other processes, and it fogs up the brain. Drink a variety of
drinks to keep your water intake up (you can't beat water itself!).
5. Get outdoors as often as possible. For exercise and because exposure to
light – especially sunshine – is vital for our body clocks and vitamin D levels.
Lack of vitamin D makes development of osteoporosis more likely. Getting
outdoors is important for social reasons too – it keeps us in touch with
the world.
6. Eat lots more fruit and vegetables. These are nature's anti-ageing
remedy, protecting us from many of the diseases we associate with
later life.
7. If you drink alcohol – little and often will do you the most good! People
who regularly drink small amounts of alcohol tend to live longer than
people who don't drink at all. The maximum benefit is achieved by drinking
between one and two units of alcohol a day.
8. Make your home safe. Clear your home of things that can trip you up.
Increase the level of lighting – especially on the stairs – so you can see
properly. Always get gas and electric appliances installed or checked by
a qualified person.
9. See your GP when you are not well. Don't put up with health problems
on the grounds of 'age' or assume that nothing can be done. Doctors are
not magicians, but they can cure or alleviate most things. See your dentist
and optician regularly too.
10. Be positive. Every day, spend 20 minutes focused on a really uplifting
thought or memory – you will feel better and your immune system will get
a boost. Be positive about your wants and needs too – studies show that
longevity appears to be linked to a determination to stay in control.
