Demonstrate knowledge of the characteristics and values of play, leisure and recreation Understand the importance of ‘active-leisure’ in maintaining a healthy society Subjec t Skills Across Curricul um Learning to Learn Starter: Various starters will be used form visual aids that will prompt discussion to interactive quizzes with mini-whiteboards. Hide & Seek Leisure, Play or Rec - Activity Suggested Learning Activities: Students will analyse the Concept of Play. They will discover that there are certain characteristics of play: freedom and time, space and spontaneity, enjoyment orientation, intrinsic values, and non- serious, non-productive assumptions. Practical games will be used to illustrate the fundamental characteristics as well as the indirect educative values will be explored: physical, social, cognitive, moral, emotional and environmental learning. The course then moves on to look at the differences between play and recreation. Pupils will be able to identify the characteristics and functions of Leisure and recreation, understanding the term ‘active leisure and how it can impact on the individual and society. Emphasis then shifts towards the Concept of Physical Recreation. Students will interpret physical recreation in a leisure and cultural framework. There will be an analysis of characteristics and their links with play using their own experiences of physical recreation. Plenary: Using games you played as a child identify the characteristics of play? What values did you learn in playing these games? Define leisure? What is the difference between recreation and physical recreation? CUE CARDS (can be used)

Learning Objective(s) : Demonstrate an understanding of Outdoor Recreation and how it can be achieved in school through Outdoor

Education. Understand what is meant by the Concept of Sport and the characteristics and values of sport.

Starter:

Various starters will be used form visual aids that will prompt discussion to interactive quizzes with mini-whiteboards.

Suggested Learning Activities:

Concepts associated with Outdoor Recreation will be discussed. These include: appreciation of the natural environment; adventure, risk and safety for the individual and respect for the countryside. Characteristics of Outdoor recreation will be highlighted through a practical with the use of ‘risk’ questionnaires. The focus then switches to Physical and Outdoor Education; The differences in an educational establishment. OAA - Questionnaire

Students will move towards a Concept of Sport. They will be asked for their interpretations of sport and sporting attitudes using their own experiences. Definitions and characteristics of sport will then be developed. These will include prowess, endeavour and fair play in the context of amateurism and professionalism.

Plenary:

What is a real risk?How can the outdoors be experienced in schools/What limits this?What makes ‘sport’ a ‘sport’?

Learning Objective(s) : Understand how Outdoor Adventurous Activities are experienced and developed in school PE. Understand the structure, aims & objectives, content of National Curriculum PE.

Suggested Learning Activities:

They will learn that there is a place for outdoor and adventurous education as a part of physical education. Definitions and characteristics of the outdoor and adventurous experience will be explored, including risk and safety.

Using their own experiences, students will study the dimensions of physical activity in school, set P.E. curriculum; extra-curricular sport and recreational opportunities.

Pupils will complete a research task and present information on the following components of the National Curriculum.Structure, Objectives, Content, Activities, Assessment, Extra curricular sport.
