    Peru Pacific Coast

One of the greatest archaeological enigmas in the world, the Nasca Lines are spectacular drawings etchedinto the desert, thought to be created by the Paracas and Nasca cultures between 900BC and 600AD.

Many theories exist as to why the Nasca Lines wereconstructed which contributes to the mystery of visiting thisarea. The drawings of animals, birds, reptiles, geometricshapes and lines, some up to 200m in length, lie across a500m2 strip of desert just north of the town of Nasca. It isonly possible to see the drawings from the air and trips overthe area in small light aircraft can be made from Pisco and

Ica. Nasca suffered an earthquake in 1996 requiring therebuilding of much of the town. In 2007 an area including thetowns of Pisco & Ica were similarly hit.

The area around the attractive city of Ica, just north of theNasca Lines is famous for its wineries and the production ofpisco, the national drink. Surrounded by desert, Ica is anagricultural oasis irrigated by subterranean aqueducts froman Inca canal. The Ica Museo Regional is devoted to pre-

Columbian ceramics and textiles including artefacts fromancient Ica, Nasca and Paracas cultures. To the south westof Ica is the beautiful emerald coloured Huacachina Lagoon.

Slightly further north, the Paracas National Reserve is theonly reserve protecting a section of the Peruvian coastline. From this peninsula, there is the opportunity to take a boat

trip to the Ballestas Islands via El Candelabro, (awonderful sign of the ancient cultures and some say anextension of the Nasca Lines). The islands are home toover 200 species of birds, Humboldt penguins and anenormous sea lion population.

The area around Nasca is a wonderful area to explore andparticularly lends itself to those who prefer the freedom toself-drive.

    Peru Colca Valley

North of Arequipa is the impressive Colca Canyon. Twice as deep as the Grand Canyon in NorthAmerica, this was thought to be the deepest canyon in the world until the nearby Cotahuasi Canyon at3354m was found to be 163m deeper.

The Colca Valley is usually accessed from Arequipa, either asa private tour or as part of a small group. The journey passesthrough the Reserva Nacional Salinas y Aguada Blancawhere vicuas are often seen. Llamas, alpacas and snowcapped volcanoes may also be seen on the journey over thealtiplano which, at the highest point, climbs to 4800m before

dropping dramatically down to the Colca Valley and themarket town of Chivay.

Travelling along the Colca Valley is like taking a step backin time with traditional agricultural villages set amongst

the pre-Inca terraces channelling water to the crops.

A wonderful place for relaxing or hiking, we recommend astay of at least one night. Included in every visit is theMirador Cruz del Condor. Here, at a point where the canyonis 1200m deep, condors can be seen gliding on the

morning thermals against the dramatic backdrop of thecanyon and the distant mountains, volcanoes and glaciers.

    Peru The Sacred Valley

The Sacred Valley is aptly named for the number of fascinating Inca ruins and fortresses that can beexplored through self drive itineraries or full day excursions. These can also be combined with anumber of hikes varying in difficulty and duration.

From the Pisac ruins in the higher regions of the Valley youcan hike to Pisac market. Alternatively, the OllantaytamboInca fortress is a dramatic engineering feat by the Incaswith beautiful terraces. In Ollanta town all trains to AguasCalientes stop here.

A few kilometres before Urubamba lies Moray, a verydifferent Inca site. Used as an agriculturalexperimentation by the Incas, it consists of manydifferent levels and terraces in a circular shape toacclimatise crops to different temperatures. Studies have

shown that there have been recordings of up to 15Cdifference from the top to bottom terraces.

Nearby to Moray lies the Salineras de Maras, or Saltpans of Maras. A naturally high concentration salt springis diverted to make hundred of small pools on the

terraces owned by local villagers which are then blockedoff and the sun is left to evaporate the water leavingpiles of pure white salt. This is a fascinating sightcreating good photo opportunities, back-dropped bygreen mountains and blue skies.

Cajamarca, with its stunning mountain scenery, elegant colonial architecture and central plaza is often compared to Cusco in the south of the country. However, the relaxed atmosphere and friendly inhabitants give a wonderful off the beaten track feel to this interesting city.

A scattering of ancient sites in the local area aptly displayevidence of the area having been inhabited since theChavin era (1200BC to 200AD). Cajamarca was also thescene of a massacre of the Incas by the Spanish, and theplace where Atahualpa, the last Inca lord, was executed, despite fulfilling the ransom demanded for his release;filling a large room with gold and twice over with silver.

Little is left of the Inca city, although a room whereAtahualpa is said to have either been held captive or tohave filled with precious metals, still stands and is open to

the public. Today gold is still a feature of the city, it wasrecently discovered in the hills to the west of the city, which is gradually becoming the site of a large gold mine.

Six kilometres east of Cajamarca are the Banos del Incawhere Atahualpa was camped with his army when theSpanish arrived. Dating from pre-Inca times, these baths,

although unremarkable, remain popular with localstoday. North of here is Otuzco, where there is a pre-Incarock necropolis. Holes carved into the rock face mark an

ancient burial site. To the south west of the city is anarea of distinctive rock formations known as The Forestof Stones, near to which is a remarkably engineered pre-Inca water canal known as Cumbe Mayo.

FoodLunch is the main meal of the day in Peru, but restaurants do stay open till quite latefor dinner in the evenings. Peruvian cuisineis very tasty and varied and mostrestaurants will also serve internationaldishes. The seafood is of high quality, especially along the coast. Generally, menusare printed in Spanish and English.

Depending on the class of restaurant, agood meal will cost from US$10 to US$20per person.

Vaccinations / HealthAlways check with your doctor / practisenurse as to the latest health requirements nolater than four weeks before departure.Vaccinations are not required by thePeruvian Government to enter the country, but Hepatitis, Tetanus, Typhoid and Diptheriavaccines are generally recommended. If youare planning to visit the Amazonian regionthen a course of Malaria tablets is stronglyrecommended. A yellow fever vaccinationmay also be required. Do not drink tap wateror consume ice cubes - only drink bottledwater. Altitude sickness may be a problem inthe Andes and the following precautions

help to minimise the effects: on arrival atyour hotel rest for three to four hours toacclimatise to the altitude; when ascendinghills do so slowly; drink extra fluids andavoid alcohol; eat light meals and avoidsedatives if possible. Locals oftenrecommended drinking coca tea. We alsorecommend regular use of a sun block toprotect your skin against the strong tropicalsun, especially at high altitudes.

LanguageSpanish is the main language. In the highlands, people are often bilingual, with Quechuaspoken in most areas. The exception is aroundLake Titicaca where Spanish and Aymara arethe two languages. English is generally spokenin the hotels, larger restaurants, airline officesand tourist agencies but is not common

    anywhere else in the country.

Weather / When to GoThere are two seasons in Peru, wet and dry.The weather does vary greatly dependingon the geographical region. The desertcoast is arid. During the summer months(January to March) the sky is mostly clearand it tends to be hot and sticky withtemperatures around 28oC degrees. Duringthe rest of the year, the coastal mist known

as the garua drifts in and the sun isalmost always obscured, with thetemperatures falling to lows of about 15oCdegrees from July to September.

Moving inland and climbing from Nasca, which is around 600 metres above sealevel to around 2,500 metres at Arequipa, you will find this area is not affected by thegarua. Rainfall is highest between Januaryand March, with a maximum in February ofabout 40 millimetres. Temperatures in thisregion are fairly constant throughout theyear from 8oC degrees in winter (July toSeptember) to 20oC degrees in summer(January to March).

The Cusco and Machu Picchu areas in theAndes experience the seasons more acutely.

Here, the drier season is between May andAugust and it is also colder, with temperaturesat 0oC degrees during the night from June toAugust. The heaviest rains fall from Decemberto March. Daytime temperatures can reach20oC degrees all year in this area.

Iquitos and Puerto Maldonado, in theAmazon Basin, are the wettest areas withthe lowest rainfall of 150 millimetres beingin July and August, rising to a high of 300millimetres in March and April.

TimePeru is five hours behind Greenwich Mean Time.

Recommended ReadingPeru travel guides published by Lonely Planet,Rough Guides, Bradt and Footprint serve as a

    useful insight into the country.

Car hireIn order to be independent and maximiseyour experience of the country, werecommend self-drive along the southernPacific Coast and the Sacred Valley. Themain roads in this part of Peru arereasonably good, and so we recommend aSaloon car (Toyota Corolla or similar) withair-conditioning. We have selected Hertz asour supplier in Peru. They have a numberof different offices around the country socars can be picked up at one location anddropped off at another.

Any drop off charges will be automatically

displayed when collecting the vehicle.Remember to photocopy your drivinglicence and carry it separately. The generalpolicy (unless advised otherwise) is toreceive the car with a full tank of petrol andto therefore return it full on drop-off - if youforget, your credit card will be chargedautomatically!

Limited mileage of 200km per day(US$0.59 for each extra km), roadsidebreakdown assistance, local taxes andCollision Damage Waiver are included inthe Hertz car-hire rates. Minimum age forrenting a vehicle is 25 but there is nomaximum age. The CDW covers you fordamage of your vehicle and any thirdparties (up to the value of US$10,000)arising from normal use of the car. Driversare, however, liable if radio or lights aretaken, or a window broken. The vehiclemust be returned to the office on timeotherwise extra charges will apply (payablelocally). There is a $5 per day charge for asecond driver.
