Australia’s First MilitaryConvoy Sets Sail

Design features a list of the39 ships that sailed from

Albany s shore.’

In the wake of Britain’s declaration of war on 4 August 1914,the Australian government mobilised 50,000 men, many ofwhom joined the convoy that departed from the port of Albanyin Western Australia.

The fleet set sail on 1 November 1914. At that time, it was thebiggest flotilla of vessels to have ever left Australia. The convoy thatdeparted from King George Sound consisted of 39 ships, carryingapproximately 30,000 Australian and New Zealand troops.

The year 2014 will mark 100 years since the departure of thisconvoy, which carried the Australian Imperial Force and theNew Zealand Expeditionary Force, who would later become knownas the , from King George Sound at Albany, to join theallied forces in the northern hemisphere.

The Australian bush is characterised by the familiar sights of thekookaburra, kangaroo, and koala.

Kangaroos can be found across Australia from cold-climate areas anddesert plains, to tropical rainforests and beaches, travelling vastdistances in search of food and shelter.

Like the kangaroo, the koala is also well-adapted to the country's dryconditions as they do not actually require water to drink. Receiving allthe moisture they need from eucalyptus leaves, koalas spend most oftheir time in these trees for this reason.

The kookaburra is fondly known for its distinctive call which soundssimilar to human laughter, and can be heard echoing through thetrees at dawn and dusk.

Fossil remains were discovered in 2005 near Winton,central Queensland by a local landholder and recovered fromwhat was once an ancient billabong by the Australian Age ofDinosaurs Museum.

The dinosaur was nick-named Matilda, after ‘Waltzing Matilda’the world famous song by Australian poet, Andrew Barton“Banjo” Paterson – the scientific name Diamantinasaurusmatildae meaning Matilda’s Diamantina River lizard.
