John 17: 6 – 19 Jesus’ Prayer for his Disciples

We gather in the name of the Lord. We do what he asked his apostles to do: wait in prayer for the

coming of the Holy Spirit. Without the Spirit the apostles were like a sail boat without the wind.

We too need the Spirit in order to be able to follow Christ wholeheartedly.

In the Gospel we have part of Jesus’ solemn prayer at the Last Supper. Here he prays for his

disciples whom he is leaving behind to carry on his work. Just as Jesus was sent into the world

by the Father, so were the disciples being sent into the world by Jesus. They are to bring his word

to others. During the Last Supper, knowing that he was soon to leave them, Jesus prayed to his

heavenly Father for them. In praying for them, he also prayed for us. What kind of things did he

pray for?

He prayed that they would remain faithful: ‘Keep those whom you have given me true to your

name.’ Our task is not to be successful, only to be faithful.

He prayed for unity among them: ‘May they be one, as you and I are one.’ Disunity among the

disciples of Jesus is a blight on their witness.

He prayed that they might be preserved in the truth: ‘May they be consecrated in the truth.’ The

truth here is the truth that Jesus is the revelation of the unseen God.

And he prayed that they may be victorious over evil: “I do not ask you to remove them from the

world, but to protect them from the evil one.’ The disciples are being sent out to challenge the

world to turn form darkness to light. In bearing witness, they must be prepared to suffer the world’s

hate.

So he prayed for faithfulness, unity, truth and victory over evil.

He foresaw that life would be difficult for them. But he did not pray that they might be spared trials

and sufferings, but that they might remain faithful in spite of them. He did not offer a release from

problems, but the strength to cope with them.

It is wrong to blame our troubles on God. God is with us in our trials. It is to him we turn in our

troubles, for comfort, strength, patience and hope.

This is how Jesus prayed for his apostles, and how we too should pray. We pray not to be spared

trials, but that God will help us to cope with whatever trials life sends us.

Each Pentecost renews the grace of Pentecost in us and in the Church.

The Transformation

As I passed the cherry tree in February, it had a bare and forlorn look about it. It contained not a

shred of beauty. In fact, it required no small act of faith to believe it was still alive.

I passed the tree again in April. When I looked at it now, I could scarcely believe my eyes, so

great was the transformation it had undergone. It was now decked out in a robe of brilliant

blossoms.

From where had all this beauty come? It had come from within the tree itself.

On looking back at it in February, when it was still in the grip of winter, who could have believed

that it contained all this?

Sometimes we write off people as having no possibilities. If in some people these possibilities

haven’t yet manifested themselves, all it means is that for them spring hasn’t yet come.

Lord God, dispose us to receive the Holy Spirit, and may his coming breathe new life into

us. We ask this through the same Christ our Lord, Amen.
