Semester 1

CMM 125 Communication Fundamentals – 42 hoursThis first-level post-secondary course will help students in all programs develop their ability to communicate effectively. The course requires students to meet first-year benchmarks for generic skills in researching, organizing, reframing, analyzing, and presenting information for academic and vocational purposes

PSW 185 Professional Issues- 42 hoursThis course focus is the role of the Personal Support Worker in regard to the Regulated Health ProfessionalsAct. In this course, students will accrue the skills and knowledge necessary for effective and professional communication in the personal support workplace, personal support - client, client family relationship building, and professional accountability Themes in this course include: client as an individual; client independence; client centered care; client and the role of the family in provision of care; culture, race, and religion; empathy and caring practices.

PSW 152 Client, Family, Community and Pharmacology- 42 hoursThis course will focus on the client and characteristics of today’s families. It will look at safety issues, abuse, common diseases, conditions and assisting with medications

PSW 162 Lab I – 56 hoursThis course will provide the learner opportunities to apply theoretical concepts and practice skills that maintain and promote health and wellness.

PSY 200 Lifespan Development – 42 hoursThis course will describe the physical, cognitive, and socioemotional domain changes during pregnancy, birth, infancy, and early childhood through to late adulthood, and the end of life. Students will be introduced to some of the major theories in developmental psychology from a lifespan perspective

MTH 128 Pre-Health Math 42 hoursThis is a preparatory mathematics course which introduces the student to a variety of arithmetic and algebraic expressions and applies these principles to typical problems that arise in health care fields.Concepts studied include numeracy fundamentals; systems of measurement and dimensional analysis; algebra and exponential and logarithmic functions. Students will develop essential critical thinking skills and problem-solving skills through exposure to application problems.

PSW 180 Biology for Personal Support Worker 42 hoursThis course will provide a basic knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the various body systems including he age related changes and common diseases and disorders.

Semester 2PSW 205 Mental Health 36 hoursPrerequisite Course(s): PSW185, PSW152, PSW180, PSW190, PSW162Students will have a clearer understanding of mental health, interpersonal communication, and socio-cultural influences on mental health as well as the effects on everyday life. Identify common coping and defense mechanisms. Describe developmental disabilities, and describe the role of a PSW in relation to assessment of a client. The student will learn about their role in medication administration

PSW 210 Lab II 24 hoursPrerequisite Course(s): PSW160 (PSW162), PSW180, PSW185, PSW155 (PSW152), PSY200, CMM125 and MTH128An introduction of adjunctive skill to improve and enhance current skills, observation, assessment, preparing and planning care for clients. A hands-on approach to learning/practicing the beside skills using simulation and interdisciplinary collaboration.

PSW 230 Clinical 171 hoursPrerequisite Course(s): PSW152, PSW162, PSW180, PSW185, PSY200, PSW205, PSW210 and MTH128This course provides students the opportunity to apply classroom learning and laboratory skills in long-term care and community settings. 96 hours in a long-term care setting and 75 hours will be in the community settings including retirement homes

PSW 135 Healthy Living 28 hoursThis course introduces students to the concepts of health, wellness and health promotion across the lifespan.This course provides program-related information about physical activity levels, healthy eating, injury prevention, tobacco use, second-hand smoke exposure and alcohol management.

CLT 100 Canada’s First Peoples 42 hoursThis experiential learning course is designed to help learners reflect on Canada’s untold history as it relates to the Indigenous experiences of colonization. Students will explore the concept of cultural safety as it relates to the human experience. Students will be introduced to the livelihood of Canada’s Aboriginal peoples in pre-contact history and discuss the effects on overall health and wellbeing in a contemporary paradigm. As Canadian citizens, students will learn to locate themselves in power imbalances that occur in practice and daily living.

Upon enrolling into Kenjgewin Teg for Post Secondary Programming, students will be required to complete one of the following options below (please choose either option A or B):

Ĵ OJI 200 – Intermediate Ojibwe

IPS 140 Mino-Bmaadziwin (Culture Camp) This course will introduce students to the concepts of Mino Bimaadiziwin (Good Life). Students will explore and demonstrate their understanding through presentation or oral and written works the strong prescriptions for the way of a good life and how we as humans should behave toward our relations. This relationship is based on the view that all life is related, students will discuss Indigenous Creation beliefs and how these beliefs underpin physical and spiritual realities

Ĵ Mino – Bmaadziwin Fall session – October 9-12, 2018; additional weekend classes November 3rd ,4th and 5th and November 30th, December 1st and December 2nd; final peer presentation date in December TBC; (overnight camping not required)

Ĵ Mino – Bmaadziwin Spring session – May 21-24, 2019 – overnight inclusive camping, location to be determined, final peer presentation May 24th, 2019
