    1. Introduction

    Aim

The topic of my personal project is Greek Sculptures, the reason of choosing this topic

is because I like art and I think modern art has overshadowed the beauty of ancient art

causing the number of people who appreciate ancient art has gradually decreased over

time. My goal is to introduce the famous Greek sculptures, demonstrate their beauty

and to convince people of the value of Greek sculptures. Through achieving this goal, I

will be able to recover the beauty of Greek sculptures and regain the appreciation on

ancient art in people of the modern world. I will answer the inquiry question of Why

are the Greek sculptures so valuable?

    Plan to achieve my goal

The following Gantt chart shows the steps and timeline of my plan:

Step 2: Collection of Information and Resources

I will start with research on the background of Greek Sculptures. I will borrow books

from library and conduct research from internet. I aim to find out information about:

    The reason for creating sculptures

The use of sculptures in the ancient Greek

The status/ position of sculptures in the Greek society

The importance of Greek sculptures towards ancient Greek

How Greek sculptures have influenced our society in the past and today.

All of these are relevant to support my inquiry question to demonstrate why Greek

sculptures are valuable. In addition, I will make a clear, detailed bibliography to

    present the sources appropriately.

Gladys HoS4 Peace - Victoria Shanghai Academy Personal Project

Step 3: Choice and Application of Technique

After understanding the history, I will relate it to the modern society, and the

thoughts of different age group about Greek sculptures. I will do a set of

questionnaire/ survey to test peoples understanding and knowledge towards Greek

Sculptures. Base on the information I collect, I will use statistical approach to analyze

the information and present in format such as a pie chart. I expect that this can

clearly state the percentages and evidence that modern people have very low degree

of appreciation on Greek sculptures. This is why I would like to remind them the

beauty of Greek art through making the sculptures models. For more proof, I will

interview some professionals in order to share their knowledge and opinions.

    Step 4: Make product

To help achieve my goal, I will create 4-6 models of the Greek Sculptures to reflect

their ancient beauties again. I will select the famous ones especially those that can be

found in the Louvre Museum, this is because those sculptures had already been

stereotyped to be the representatives of Ancient Greek sculptures.

To get myself ready for a topic about Sculpture, I have joined a summer art course

Caricature Sculpture which is a course of creating sculpture and through which I

have learnt how to control the clay well. Furthermore, my mother, who is a Clay

Artist, will be able to advise me throughout the process.

Gladys HoS4 Peace - Victoria Shanghai Academy Personal Project

    Step 5: Analysis of Information

After collecting information from various sources, I will well organize the research

and justify them with detailed analysis. This can clearly show the depth of my

reflection, adding my own ideas and visions. To have a more powerful supply, I will

add in some comments and perspective response, which can further bring out

arguments and evidence. During the research, I should focus on the topic and always

relate the information to respond to r the inquiry question.

Step 6: Analysis of Process and Outcome

After the step of collecting and organizing information, I will validate all my analysis,

and always make sure it is related to the topic, AOI and the inquiry question. Also, I

should be able to identify my strength and weakness during the whole process, and

point out how to improve. This step is to reflect and suggest improvement for the

    researching process.

    Step 7: Reflective Essay

Finally, I will put together all the above materials into an essay form for sharing with

my audience. I will make sure the whole writing is in-line and related to the topic,

AOI, goal and inquiry question. In addition, I will create table and appendices to

    include reference information where necessary.

    Areas of Interaction (Human Ingenuity)

Human Ingenuity is an AOI that is about invention, creation, enjoyment and life

quality. This AOI is about the relationship between human and things around the

world. According to my topic, as it is about the ancient Greek sculptures, it includes

history and also a human activity. I will explain the effect of Greek sculptures towards

the modern art and how it has changed human life. Greek sculptures were created by

ancient Greek, and were originally used for religious worshipping; they were then used

as an appreciation of heroism, beauty, celebration, love, daily practical use,

decoration to the wide varieties of usages and forms of existence in the world today.By applying this AOI, we are able to identify the impact of creating these sculptures,

the cultural developments and aesthetic judgments. Apart from these, we can find out

the effect of Greek sculptures towards the human lives and society.

    2. Process

    Research

Ive done research on the origin of Greek sculptures, the types of sculptures, the

reason of making the sculptures, their functions, the time period of Ancient Greek

Art, how Ancient Greek artists were treated in order to understand about the

history of Greek sculptures. Also, Ive researched for famous sculptures in order to

appreciate the products and to pick the ones Ill make. In addition, Ive collectedinformation, conducted survey and interview about the influence of Greek

sculpture, and the relationship between human and sculptures in order to state the

connection between them. These three areas of information are very useful for

accessing my AOI (Human Ingenuity) and answering my inquiry question- Why are

    the Greek sculpture so valuable?

Organization of Information using Process Journal

  • 8/9/2019 Personal Project 4000 Greek Sculpture HI Gladys

Gladys HoS4 Peace - Victoria Shanghai Academy Personal Project

Ive made a big Process Journal with 100 sheets. As my sources are books, internets

and interviews, so Ive organized them well:

Books: Ive borrowed them, read through it, and stuck post-it on the pages which I

thought are suitable for my Personal Project, I then photocopied the relevant pages

of the book and stuck them onto my process journal.

Internet: Ive conducted research on many websites and did some screen print and

copy-paste into a word doc, and printed them. After printing, in the same way as

books, Ive printed them out and stuck them onto my process journal.

After all of these researching and printings, to make useful information more

outstanding, Ive used different color pens to highlight and point out the most

important and most related information to my topic, AOI and IQ. Also, in every piece

of my information, Ive underline and circle phrases to analyze and paraphrase it.

    Interview and Survey

As my AOI is Human Ingenuity, research is not enough to prove the relationship of

human and Greek sculptures. Therefore, Ive designed a set of surveys and interviews.

The surveys are for general people to fill in; it is mainly about the basics of Greek

sculptures. For interviews, it is aimed for some experts of art. There are several

  • 8/9/2019 Personal Project 4000 Greek Sculpture HI Gladys

    11/41

    2

Gladys HoS4 Peace - Victoria Shanghai Academy Personal Project

questions requiring own perspective and knowledge towards Greek Art. The reason I

created two sets of questionnaire is to compare the knowledge between the general

group and the experts. This can reflect the decreasing value of Greek sculptures in

    modern peoples perspective.

    Product Making

My products have been extremely successful bringing the beauty of Greek Sculptures

to my audiences. They are models of four chosen famous sculptures. Though Im not a

professional sculptor, with the coaching from expert, Ive re-built the specifications

and movement of the original sculptures. Most important, Im able to retain the spirit,

mood, and beauty of the sculptures very well. If I could afford more time and be more

skillful, I could make a few more challenging sculptures with meaningful stories and

backgrounds, this can further increase peoples appreciation.

The ways to create my product

As my product is to build some ancient Greek sculptures, using clay is the best way to

create it. The reason is that clay carries a similar texture and colorings as the

sculptures do. Also, clay is a soft material which I can handle it more easily and form a

more detailed- body shaping. A good body shaping is important to a Greek sculpture,

because one of the functions for Greek sculpture is to appreciate the beauties as well.

  • 8/9/2019 Personal Project 4000 Greek Sculpture HI Gladys

    2

Gladys HoS4 Peace - Victoria Shanghai Academy Personal Project

I have chosen a kind of Japanese clay, La Doll, which is easy to handle and can dry

    easily in the air.

Knowledge to help create my product

As making product takes time, so Ive started to build my sculptures in the very

beginning of my project. During the building, I was in parallel spending time on

researching and analyzing information. I found that it has not been a very good start

for me that I started off my product without enough understanding of my products.

After the collection of information, Ive understand more about the historical

background of the sculptures, Ive been more familiar to the area Im looking for, I

study well each of my chosen sculptures, and I know the basic information about

them, this has helped me on building their body by standing out their special features

    and the meanings behind.

    3. Analysis

    Analysis from my Research

Historical background/ origin of Greek sculptures:

Greek Art was started in BC 500; the origin of it was the offspring of Greek religion.

The early Greek believed in gods, when sculptures were built to symbolize the

    2

Gladys HoS4 Peace - Victoria Shanghai Academy Personal Project

Gods appearance. During that period, Greek sculptures were mostly placed in

temples for worship. The Ancient Greek had no specific state-religion, each

sculptures had their own specifications, so people in Greek must study all of their

stories and types of gods. Other sculptures were built to symbolize victory, love,

and other kinds of memory and celebration. There are totally 8 types of sculptures:

    1- Temple-image

2- Sculptures connected with the temples and similar buildings

3- Commemorative or Dedicatory Statues and Groups of Statue

4- Athletic Statues and other Statues of Honor

    5- Tombs

    6-Portraits

    7- Historical sculptures

    8- Character-studies from mythology.

    Materials:

The earliest material for building Greek sculptures was wood, and stones were for

replacing some body parts like: face, hands and feet. Instead of stone, more types of

materials were sometimes used, such as ivory. The real draperies (clothes) were

placed on the sculptures for decoration. The last material was clay; it was used for

forming the human figure and for adding details.

    Famous Sculptures:

I have seen lots of Greek sculptures through my research and have been impressed by

most of them. Among all, I have picked four that are famous, meaningful and widely

attractive as my product for the project. I aim to help the audience to appreciate the

beauty and value of Greek sculptures through my products.

    Venus de Milo~

Venus de Milo is an ever since life-size figure of an Aphrodite, which was discovered on

the Greek island of Melos in year 1820. This sculpture is not completely naked, but herbody emerges from the folds of her rich gown. The sculpture of Venus de Milo is the

only well-preserved statue that expresses the goddess of love. Ive chosen this

sculpture, because it represents the beauties of god, and it is one of the top 3

treasures of the Louvre Museum. Most people appreciate the body shape and form of

this sculpture, through which I can present the beauty of Greek sculptures.

    Winged Victoria of Smothrace~

Winged Victoria of Samothrace is also known as Nike of Samothrace, this statue was

discovered in thousands of pieces on a little- known island in the north of Aegean-

Samothrace in year 1863. The goddess Nike stands still on a ships bow in dark stone

with her mighty wings rises up. This statue is a symbol of recording a winning of a

naval battle. After the Napoleon III, this statue has been located into a safer treasure

room in Louvre. Ive chosen this sculpture, because it represents the braveness and

the winning side of battle. It is also one of the top 3 treasures of the Louvre Museum. Most people appreciate the standing position and the opened wings of it. This

sculpture stands on a boat/ ship edge, which can bring a message to people about the

spiritual mind, and a never give up heart which is very meaningful.

    Zeus~

Zeus is a great powerful king who was the god of the sky and the ruler of the Olympian

gods. He was a god for punishing those that lie or break oaths. He was a rain god as

well, gathered clouds and wielded thunderstorms. He was a representative of justice

and mercy, the protector of weak, and the punisher of the wicked. Though this

sculpture is not well-known like the above two sculptures, but the story and character

are powerful. It is the most supreme god and the origin of religion. These sculptures

symbolize the history of Greek religion which was the foundation of the history of

    Greek sculptures.

    Sleeping Eros~

Sleeping Eros is characterization of age. It was a statue belonged to the 3 rd century

B.C. - early 1 st century A. D. This Eros is the god of love, a message of bringing love to

the earth. Usually, Eros plays with each other and pets, a symbol of simple and

peaceful. This sculpture can show the kindness and simple-mind of a child. SleepingEros is a sculpture represents childhood, and it is a young god of love. We can usually

see Eros through religious paintings, it is also known as the flying angels, who always

fly and for a group at the side of God. This is a typical representative of love which is

a common theme in Greek sculptures too.

    Human and Greek sculptures:

In the early days, sculptors made statues to decorate temples, tombs, monuments and

homes, sculptures were used for worshipping activities. In the Late Greek period,

sculptors made objects for peoples daily use, such as: toys, potties and cosmetic jars.

Sculptures could be commonly found, this shows that human and sculpture was closely

related in the Ancient Greeks society. It was also from Greece that sculptures were

spread to other parts of the world such as to Rome where Roman sculptures are

    famous too.

    Findings from Interview & Survey

From my interview with professional experts and professional students, they viewed

that sculptures have been the origin of art and craft, and a style of art work which can

present in a real way. Greek sculptures are valuable, because it is an ancient and

traditional way of worshipping; it is a specification and representative image of the

Greeks. Nowadays, the number of Greek sculptors has been decreased, and modern art

is not requiring a realistic technique. Apart from its value, Greek sculptures also affect

the world. In Ancient time, Greek sculptors are for worship and big ceremonies and

events; in modern time, Greek sculptures have been used as architecture and for

interior decoration too. Through these interviews of experts, Ive found out more

useful information to answer and relate to my topic and AOI.

From my survey with the general community, Ive found that most of them have seen

the sculptures, but not really know the background and history of it. Ive found that

most people knew about Victoria de Samothrace, and they saw it through internet

and Louvre Museum. Half of them think sculptures are for decoration, and half of them

think they are just a kind for art. Only 2 percent people would prefer Ancient Greek

over modern art. This survey shows that most people have very superficial knowledge

about Greek sculptures, promoting the value of Greek sculpture is important so more

people can appreciate their wonderful contributions. In my opinion, I think Greek

sculptures are work of realistic, and for recording stories, having interesting

backgrounds and conveying meaningful messages. They are not simply a piece of art

made of wood or clay, they should be highly valued.

    The use of Greek sculptures

    for decoration

    for artfor worshipping

    for gift

Why are Greek sculptures so valuable?

Through this project, my interest and knowledge about Greek sculptures has been

increased, and Ive got a better appreciation on Greek art as well. Before the project,

I thought Greek sculptures/ statues were just a kind of ancient Art, and it is another

way to present human portraits. However, after the research, Ive found out that

  • 8/9/2019 Personal Project 4000 Greek Sculpture HI Gladys

    19/41

    2

Gladys HoS4 Peace - Victoria Shanghai Academy Personal Project

apart from an ancient Art, sculptures are used as worshipping, gift, celebration,

decoration, building and other daily uses as well. Greek sculptures are classified as

treasures in world-class museums with significant historic values. My new perspective

to Greek sculpture is more broad and interested; I think sculptures do influence the

world in both art and practical ways. For example, China Buddha is a Chinese god and

in black stone, which carries the same painting rule as Greek sculptures did (any

goddess sculpture is painted in gold/ black/ white). And also, sculptures are very

typical in modern interior decoration. Nowadays, the numbers of sculptors have been

decreased, and the numbers of people who appreciate is decreasing as well. Through

my surveys, we can clearly see that most people in nowadays preferring modern art

not realizing Greek Art being the foundation of modern art. Therefore, Greek

sculptures are very valuable painting the history of Art in the world.

    4. Reflection and Evaluation

    The planning stage

My plan has been a very important foundation for me to be successful in delivering theproject. First, I have set my topic, goal, AOI and IQ with target dates. Next, I broke

down the project into tasks and set a deadline for each of them. Then, I have created

a document plan in the format of a Gantt chart. In this Gantt chart, Ive captured my

tasks, the time required and the schedule of completing each task.

  • 8/9/2019 Personal Project 4000 Greek Sculpture HI Gladys

    20/41

    2

Gladys HoS4 Peace - Victoria Shanghai Academy Personal Project

During the execution of the project, this Gantt chart has helped me to follow the steps

in an organized and timely manner. I updated the Gantt chart with actual progress

every month to ensure my process was not behind schedule. However, though taskswere detailed and well-planned, the actual duration was a little bit longer than the

planned time, so sometimes I have to catch up.

    The research stage

My research stage was very organized. Ive researched the origin and history of Greek

Sculptures, then information about the materials and use of Greek Sculptures. After

that, Ive researched my chosen sculptures with historical background and meaning. At

last, by linking to the AOI (human Ingenuity), Ive carried out interviews and surveys

with several people and experts, which can reflect the knowledge and understanding

of Greek Sculptures in the modern people. Although these researches have provided

good supporting to my Inquiry question, I think there can be room for improvement. I

think I could provide some information about artists, who have been influenced by the

idea of Greek sculptures; this will enable me to further relate Greek sculptures and

    modern art.

    Conclusion

After working on this project, my understanding and knowledge towards Greeksculptures has increased substantially. Ive explored the relationship between human

and Greek sculptures, and how Greek sculptures have affected the world. As a result, I

have answered my inquiry question and addressed the AOI. I have led my audience to

appreciate the value and beauty of Greek Sculptures, and I have built up strong

    interest on the topic too.

If I could have one more chance to retake this personal project, I would consider about

finding more information and provides evidences to show a development of sculptures.(How they share and spread their culture from just Greek to the whole world). For

improvement, if I have more time, I would like to collect more useful information

rather than randomly picking information around every source

.My inquiry question is Why are Greek sculptures so valuable? Through my whole

personal project, Ive proven the statement of Greek Sculptures are valuable.

During my process of research, Ive collected background information of Greek

sculptures, and provide timeline to show the development of Greek Art. Through the

analysis and results from questionnaire, I can prove that Greek sculptures are

valuable, and a major influence to human life.

~ How do Ancient Greek sculptures affect the world?

The Greeks defined the perfect human body through proportions. Their idea of beautyas depicted in their sculptures has affected how an artist depicts a person. For a longtime, artists would always try to reflect the traditional Greek perfectionism in theirwork.

*affect artists ideas of the human body and composition

~ What is the relationship between human and Greek sculptures?

Greek sculptures depict great heroes or gods, they honor the great deeds they havedone. Humans are distanced from these sculptures because they are meant to depict abeing better than the ordinary person. Their proportions are measured to the extent

that in reality no human can possess. This sense of perfectionism puts the viewer on alower level-makes them not worthy in order to depict the power of gods.

*distance relationship-you are not as perfect as god
