The basics can be learned in a few minutes, and members can be playing on a team their first time out. Usually there are no fixed teams as they are drawn by chance every week. No special clothing is needed. The equipment is provided by your centre.

Old Sport Enjoying Major Renaissance

Carpet Bowling is becoming an increasingly popular activity of choice. It offers great social and physical activity requiring little supervision and little money to get started. All you really need is a special carpet and a set of carpet bowls. Other accessories are optional. One set-up can accommodate up to 8 players.

Carpet Bowling is played on a special 30ft by 6ft carpet. It is a community activity that is quickly growing in popularity. It is commonly played in community centres, retirement residences, church halls, clubhouses, or school halls. It's a great social sport that brings any community together. Equipment is often provided by the facility for club members' use, .and for those who prefer to own their own bowls, Perky will be happy to supply their needs

Carpet Bowling is a social sport that is distinguished by the use of a biased ball called a "bowl". This bowl is asymmetrical so that it always curves towards the biased (heavier) side. The goal is to roll the bowls, closer to a smaller yellow or white ball, called the jack, than one's opponent is able to do.

Carpet Bowling is played on a special carpet, 30 feet long X 6 feet wide, by 2 teams of 4, 3 or 2 players each, 4 being most common. First, the Jack, which is 2.5 inches in diameter (the same as for Lawn Bowls), is placed on the center line, 3 - 6 feet from the end of the carpet. Then, from an 18 inch wide space at the front of the carpet,

each team bowls 8 biased bowls, in turn, to the jack, avoiding an 18 inch block, placed in the center of the carpet. When all bowls have been rolled, the team having its bowls closest to the jack counts one point for each bowl that

is closer than the opposite team's closest bowl. Typically, a game consists of 8 ends.

Rules of the Game, provided by The English Carpet Bowls Association, are not complicated. Often, clubs create their own house rules.

Short Mat Bowling is another variation of indoor bowling. It is similar to Carpet Bowling except that it is played on a longer carpet, which measures 45ft by 6ft. Usually players use the larger outdoor lawn bowls and the same delivery. The scoring is the same and the tactics are very similar. The main variation is simply the length of the carpet.

Where to Play This indoor carpet game does not require dedicated space and is very simple to learn and enjoy. Short Mat bowling is played in church halls, community halls and leisure centers, school gyms, hotel ballrooms, lawn bowling clubs, country clubs, cruise ships and oil platforms — anywhere there is a suitable flat surface. Short Mat is ideal for golf clubs and high school programs in the autumn and winter.

Essential Equipment A special 45ft carpet, bowls and a jack, two standard delivery mats, two fenders, and a centre block are required for each Short Mat setup. Carpet Bowls or larger outdoor lawn bowls can be used along with heavy weight jacks. To protect your carpets in the off season, the PVC cover bag is recommended. For ease of storage and deployment, a handling unit is also suggested, as these carpets weigh 34kgs each.

Indoor Short Mat Bowls is a co-ed sport

that is easy to learn, can be played for

a lifetime and can easily fit into a Phys

Ex school curriculum. Of course,

proficiency comes with practice;

however, it does not take long. It’s not

uncommon to see teenagers compete

seriously with adults in the outdoor

version. The sport is not expensive.
