• Learning Objectives: Having attended this lecture, the delegates will be able to describe the key elements of ERAS programmes, identify the populations in which ERAS programmes have been successfully implemented and share experiences of ERAS programmes from around Europe.

Dr Brian O’DonnellBio: Dr Brian O’Donnell MB, MSc, MD, FCARCSI is a Consultant Anaesthetist at BreastCheck and Cork University Hospital; Lecturer in Anaesthesia at University College Cork; Principal Investigator at the ASSERT for Health Centre UCC; former Honorary Secretary and founding member of the Irish Society of Regional Anaesthesia; Director of the Cork Academy of Regional Anaesthesia and the Cork Cadaveric Peripheral Nerve Block Course. He graduated medical school in 1997 from Trinity College Dublin. In 2000 he entered the Irish anaesthesia specialist training programme. He was awarded both the Fellowship of the College of Anaesthetists of Ireland (FCARCSI) and MSc in Anaesthesia with distinction in 2005. While still a anaesthesia resident, he and co-investigators conducted the initial descriptive research on the Transversus Abdominis Plane (TAP) block. In 2009, he was awarded a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree with distinction, at University College Cork, for his work on the role of ultrasound guided axillary block in upper limb surgery. That year he was also awarded the IJMS Anaesthesia Doctor of the Year award 2009. His current research interests include proficiency based procedural skills training; simulation in regional anaesthesia; bio-innovation in regional anaesthesia; and evaluation of clinical outcomes following enhanced recovery programmes for breast surgery. He is a recreational ironman triathlete.

• Learning Objectives: Having attended this lecture, the delegates will be able to describe the evidence linking exercise with indices of health and longevity. Concepts of cardiovascular, endocrine and neurological health together with the optimal exercise ‘dose’ for health will be discussed.

Dr Frank LoughnaneBio: Dr Frank Loughnane is a Consultant Anaesthetist at Cork University Hospital. He is clinical lead in the regional anaesthesia fellowship programme in Cork University Hospital, a director of the Cork Academy of Regional Anaesthesia and a co-founder of the Cork Cadaveric Peripheral Nerve Block Course. He graduated from NUI Galway in 1991, is a Fellow of the College of Anaesthetists of Ireland as of 2001 and trained in regional anaesthesia at Central Hôpital Universitaire, Nancy, France. His current research interests include procedural skills training, ultrasound-guided neuraxial block and analgesia for total knee arthroplasty. Also, he is involved in the development of key performance indicators for anaesthesia for orthopaedic surgery and developing care pathways for the elderly, frail orthopaedic patient. In addition to maintaining an interest in original research he has co-authored a textbook on the subject, Peripheral Nerve Blocks and Peri-operative Pain Relief.

Dr John McDonnellBio: Dr John McDonnell is consultant anaesthetist at BreastCheck and Galway University Hospitals. He is Clinical Senior Lecturer at University College Galway. John’s principal research interests are regional anaesthesia and acute pain. He is an accomplished endurance open water swimmer, ironman triathlete and avid kite surfer.

Dr Padraig MahonBio: Dr Padraig Mahon is a consultant Anaesthetist at Cork University Hospital appointed in 2010. Dr Mahon graduated from University College Dublin in 2000 and subsequently entered the national anaesthesia training programme in 2002. He was awarded  fellowship of the College of Anaesthetists of Ireland in 2004 and MSc Anaesthesia in 2007. He is also a fellow of the joint Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine of Ireland (2009). Dr Mahon  was awarded his Medical Doctorate by University College Cork in 2009 for his work documenting the role of spectral entropy as a monitor of post-operative sleep disturbance. Prior to taking up his consultant appointment Padraig completed subspeciality training in both Regional and Cardiac anaesthesia at Sunnybrook Trauma Centre and Toronto General Hospital  Ontario, Canada. Padraig cycled competitively from a young age, and has completed multiple triathlons, he is currently training for IM Barcelona in 2018.

Evidence based nutrition for endurance athletic performance:

• Structure: • 30 minute didactic lecture• 10 minute Q&A session• 5 minute closing summary

• Learning Objectives: Having attended this lecture, the delegates will be able to describe the common nutritional supplements taken by athletes to improve athletic performance. Delegates will gain an understanding of the efficacy of each supplement and the manner in which efficacy has been established. Delegates will also gain an understanding of the potential impact of nutritional supplements on individual athletes physiology, and the implications for safe patient care in the perioperative period.

Fiona O’Donnell, MScBio: Fiona O’Donnell qualified in and worked as a cardiac physiologist at Dublin Institute of Technology and St. Vincent’s University Hospital, Dublin in 2004. She subsequently worked as lead physiologist in cardiac electrical therapies at Cork University Hospital. Having completed personal training qualifications through the NCEF in Ireland she became a fitness and pilates coach. In 2015 she was awarded MSc in Sports Nutrition at the University of Chester. She currently works as a sports and performance nutritionist in West Cork, working with both individual athletes and sports teams.

Bernadette DowneyBio: Bernadette Downey is master trainer for the Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training National Programme; advisor to the National Office of suicide prevention on DSH training for professionals; and Chairperson of the Drugs and Therapeutic Committee West Cork. She is a Community Mental Health nurse managing a caseload in West Cork mental health services and lecturer on the undergraduate nursing program in UCC on medication management in the community .

Bio: Tom Hautekiet lives in Antwerp and has been working there as a graphic designer since 1997. He devises visual identities for companies, graphics for expositions and music-festivals like Rock Werchter, posters, packaging, books and graphics for television. His work has been published in several books and magazines around the world. He used to be a member of the theatergroup De Kakkewieten and was co-founder of the mambo-orchestra El tattoo del Tigre.

Dr Kris VermeylenBio: Dr Kris Vermeylen is a consultant anaesthetist at the Departement of Anesthesie – Reanimatie of the AZ Turnhout. From 2004 to 2008, he was staff member at Sofia Childrens ziekenhuis Rotterdam (Erasmus MC): and emergency medicine trauma helicopter. From 2006-2013 he worked at the department of Anesthesie – Reanimatie of the Middelheim and Paola children’s hospital in Antwerpen (ZNA) and part time at the Thoraxcentrum Erasmus Mc Rotterdam. Hi specialist interests include paediatric anaesthesia, cardio-thoracic anesthesia, loco-regional anesthesia and emergency medicine.

Dr Bram BourgonjonBio: Dr Bram Bourgonjon is a 4th year resident in Anesthesiology, based in Brussels, Belgium. He started his career as a neurosurgery resident with a great interest in traumatology but switched to anesthesiology after one year. He completed a postgraduate in Sports Medicine in 2016. On a sportive level, I like participating in Gran Fondo cycling races and local ‘kermesse’ races. I run to stay in shape during the winter time and compete in half marathons.
