Time marches on, and the ever-changingnature of the challenges and opportunitiesin shipbuilding has been evident over thesix-month period since Conoship's lastnewsletter. We had previously consideredthat the pace of development in theindustry in 2008 would be limited byextended delivery times for the main vesselcomponents and equipment, and byrestricted newbuild slot availability over therelatively short term. However, as a resultof widespread cancellations of new orders, especially in the Far East, there is someimprovement in the availability of mainengines and propulsion systems, even fordeliveries in 2009.

With steel and oil prices now standing atsuch high levels, the need for ship designsincorporating the most favourable ratiosbetween steel weight and deadweight, andbetween installed power and service speed, has become ever more pressing for themaritime industry. In such a situation as weare faced with today, Conoship can draw onits expertise in the design and engineeringof optimised solutions, alreadydemonstrated across a wide range of vesseltypes, to develop efficient new proposalsfor shipowner and shipyard clients.

An increasing number of yards around theworld are employing the block section, orring section, assembly principle, but havenot fully recognised that this method ofconstruction requires a different approachin engineering compared to conventionalshipbuilding practices. There is much togain when it comes to 'lean and mean'production engineering, where weldingmetres and the number of constructionparts are kept to a minimum.

As foreshadowed in Conoship Newsletter2007/II, a former member shipyard,Scheepswerf Harlingen, has rejoined thegroup. The yard is now known as IntervakScheepswerf & Constructie, and is offering

newbuild slots for sea-river vessels up to11.50 m in width. The yard is currently completing avegetable oil tanker, and is startingconstruction of a hopper dredger. In thenear future, Intervak anticipates extendingits newbuild capabilities to vessels of 16.0 mbreadth. Other Conoship member yards inThe Netherlands have full orderbooks, andhave made new investments this year toenhance their shipbuilding productioncapacities.

Throughout the global network of ConoshipAssociated Shipyards, orderbooks ingeneral are characterised by long series ofvessels. Nonetheless, typical yards focusedon river-sea vessels can offer relativelyshort-term delivery slots. The former Conoship associated shipyardChowgule & Company in India hasaugmented its workload with anothernewbuild series based on a Conoship-developed multipurpose vessel design of4,500 tdw.

We hope you will read this newsletter withinterest and pleasure. If you have anyquestions and/or remarks, please feel freeto contact us.

Barkmeijer Shipyards with almost 160 yearsof ship building experience has diversifieditself into demanding markets. Beside theongoing process of new building of dry andliquid cargo vessels the yard has establisheda sound reputation in the dredging market.Barkmeijer Shipyards still believes in theprinciple that “nothing is impossible until

the contrary is proven”. From the very firstdesign drawings through to delivery of thevessel Barkmeijer Shipyards coordinates theconstruction, outfitting, testing andcommissioning as well as delivery of thevessel. This approach has led to a successfuldelivery of a wide variation of vessel typessuch as salvage vessels, gas– and bitumentankers, dry cargo vessels, container vessels, dredgers, inland vessels and fishing vessels.

Other product developments are inmaterializing stadia at the Yard. In nextnewsletter we hope to be able to report onthese new developments.

An example of Barkmeijer’s flexible andcustomer oriented approach is theNewbuilding of the 6.000 tdw MV “Saffier”,the latest acquisition of the Dutch owner‘De Bock Maritiem’. This owner started it’smaritime new building activities in 2002with signing a new building contract for one3.200 tdw multi purpose vessel, MV“Smaragd”, also at Barkmeijer Shipyards.

For the design and engineering of MV“Saffier”, Barkmeijer Shipyards andConoship International were keeping aclear view on the typical owner’srequirements and design constraints andput a lot of effort in hull form optimisationin order to secure favourable sea keepingcharacteristics in combination with

The engine room is divided into two levels. The lowest level accommodates thebilge/ballast/deck system, bunker manifoldand dirty oil system. On the tweendeck thefreshwater system, starting/working airsystem, separator room, tank heating systemand auxiliary generator system are situated.MV “Saffier” is propulsed by a flexiblemounted MAN B&W 8L27/38 main engineof 2.720 kW, driving a four bladedcontrollable pitch propeller of 3.400 mmvia a gearbox.

Electrical power is generated by means of ashaft generator of 435 kVa, an auxiliarygenerator of 265 kVa, and anemergency/harbour generator of 265 kVa.

excellent deadweight-, speed- and installedpower ratio’s. MV “Saffier” has beendesigned as a versatile general cargo ship, with a large single hold of 264000 cb.ft. anda length of 66 meters. This cargo holdlength has already shown its favourabledimensions and capacity in today’s marketfor voluminous and long cargo units, suchas project cargoes, windmills, offshoreconstructions, cranes, pipes, etc.

Accommodation for the crew is situatedabove main deck level in the aft ship. Eachcabin is equipped with a private sanitaryunit. The accommodation also includes afully equipped fitness room, including awall sized mirror and satellite TV.
