Upon completion of the New Provider Course, the learner will be able to:
• Review normal perinatal physiology and assessment.
• Identify factors that place the fetus at risk.• Select appropriate fetal heart monitoring
methods.• Define components of systemic assessment of
fetal heart monitoring information.• Define normal and abnormal uterine activity.• List factors affecting fetal heart rate
monitoring interpretation.• Describe physiologic interventions.• Describe healthcare providers communication
and documentation responsibilities.• Interpret fetal heart rate monitor tracings by
systematically analyzing the fetal heart rate components in actual cases.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
This online course is designed for new obstetric nurses, interns, and residents.
Using NICHD nomenclature, the New Provider Course curriculum includes fetal physiology and its relationship and impact on fetal heart rate monitoring interpretation.
Upon completion of the course, users will be able to apply what they have learned to actual fetal heart rate monitor tracings by interpreting them and determining what, if any, interventions are needed. For an additional fee, participants have the opportunity to earn nine nursing contact hours upon successful completion of the review test.
COURSE CONTENT
The New Provider Course content includes:
• Physiologic Adaptations to Pregnancy• Fluid Dynamics• Fetal Oxygen and Acid/Base Metabolism• Amniotic Fluid Volume• Umbilical Cord Influences• Introduction to Fetal Heart Rate
Monitoring• Determining Fetal Heart Rate Baseline• Fetal Heart Rate Variability• Causes of Fetal Heart Rate Changes• Uterine Contractions/Intrauterine Pressure
Catheter• Fetal Heart Rate Patterns including Early,
Late, and Variable Decelerations; Categories; and Sinusoidal Versus Pseudosinusoidal
Fetal Heart Rates• Antepartum Testing• Communication and Documentation• Review Test, which includes ten clinical case
studies• Evaluation
The New Provider Course is offered to institutions as an annual subscription. For just $225, this course can be used by as many of your new providers throughout the year as you choose. There is an additional fee of $50 per participant, if contact hours are desired.
This course also is available to individuals. The registration fee is $175 and includes nine contact hours.

Upon receipt of the registration form, institutions will receive a start-up package which includes: your organization’s assigned username and password, logon instructions, and a copy of our Principles of Fetal Heart Rate Monitoring reference textbook. Additional reference textbooks are available for purchase.
Institutions also will receive a participant data form in the start-up package for registering participants who wish to receive contact hour credit. The participant data form will need to be completed and submitted with payment. Each participant receiving nursing contact hours will be assigned their own username and password to access the course. Participants not receiving nursing contact hours will access the course using the organization’s assigned username.
