Is this program
for me?
I love Music
I am keen and
willing to
practice
outside of
school hours
I am a
dedicated
student
Music at Leeming Senior High School is divided into three equal
parts:
Class Music: An elective class that students can select to be
part of their weekly timetable.
Instrumental Lessons: Taught by an Instrumental Music
School Services teacher. Students come out of their weekly class
on a rotating basis to get specialist instruction on their chosen
instrument.
Ensemble Rehearsal: Either before or after school,
ensembles are practical lessons where students rehearse music
for a number of performance opportunities throughout the year.
Music Program 2018
Valedictory Performance
The music program at Leeming Senior High School is supported by the Instrumental Music School
Services (IMSS) and provides free instrumental
lessons as well as performance opportunities in a
range of ensembles to selected students. As such,
the course is similar to a scholarship which demands
an ongoing commitment from students and parents.
We expect, therefore, that students enrolling in the
course for Year 7 will participate at least until the
end of Year 9.
Students are selected for the program to create a
very delicate balance within the ensembles and it is
in doing this that we can maintain such a high
performance standard.
Learning a musical instrument at school opens up a whole new world of opportunities. Students
become part of a large group of like minded students who work to create music together.
Instrumental Music Lessons Lower School– Year 7-10
Students are taught in small groups, generally on the same
instrument. Lessons are within class time but are usually on
a rotating basis so the impact on any one timetabled class is
minimized. Students rarely miss an entire class in any
subject. In practice, most students have no difficulty in
catching up with work missed and the system has worked
well in schools across the state for many years. However, it
is the student’s responsibility to catch up on any missed
school work.
Beginner students will be auditioned or asked to join a mixed
instrumental group such as Concert Band or Guitar
Ensemble when they are considered ready by their
instrumental music teacher.
Upper School—Year 11-12
Upper School
students are given a
20-30 minutes one on
one lesson in upper
school and are often
taught before and
after school or during
recess and lunchtime. This allowance is to further reduce the
impact on other subjects.
High Expectations Incredible Achievements Students in the Music program are
expected to take a responsible
approach when it comes to
learning their instrument and
participating in ensembles. All
students undertaking instrumental
lessons at Leeming Senior High
School are expected to be involved
in at least one ensemble. Ensemble
rehearsals are conducted once a
week and attendance is compulsory.
Being part of an ensemble is a fun
and rewarding experience for
students, but it also comes with the
responsibility to not let your
ensemble members down.
Each year a three-day music camp
is held for all students involved in an
ensemble. During this time, music
specialists from IMSS and
professional musicians come to work
with students through intensive
workshops and ensemble
rehearsals. This provides an
opportunity for students to further
develop their performing skills
individually and within their
ensembles, work as a team, develop
friendships and have fun in a safe
and welcoming environment.
All Leeming Senior High School
ensembles are commended every
year for the outstanding quality of
their performances.
Jazz Band Performance at UWA
Creative Minds at
Work Music students at Leeming Senior High School are given numerous opportunities to grow and expand their knowledge. Our Arts Department is very well-regarded among
peers.
In 2016 Leeming SHS was chosen to take part in the AMCOS APRA SongMakers program. The Performing Arts area was transformed into a creative hothouse for sixteen budding songwriters and producers from Year 10,11 and 12. During the two day intensive, the students worked with Award-winning writer/performer Kay Temperley (Eskimo Joe– Basement Birds) and producer Anna Laverty, to create ‘market-ready’ music from scratch. Run with support from the Australian Government this program is all about contemporary music and is aimed at nurturing the next generation of hit makers.

Instrumental Music School Services (IMSS formerly SIM) The Arts Department at Leeming Senior
High School runs a successful program
supported by the Department of Education
Instrumental Music School Services
(IMSS).
Beginner positions in instrumental lessons are limited and requesting instrumental tuition in
Year 7 does not guarantee a position in the IMSS Program. Students need to enroll in Class
Music and fill in an enrolment form found under the Music tab in the school’s website.
Being involved in music at Leeming Senior High school is a wonderful opportunity to make new
friends and expand your mind.
At Leeming Senior High School, IMSS Tuition is available on the
following instruments:
Flute
Clarinet
Saxophone
French Horn
Trumpet
Trombone
Euphonium
Voice
Violin
Cello
Double Bass
Percussion
Not all instruments are available every year. Students that play an instrument not available through
IMSS can still enrol in Music as long as they receive private tuition outside of school hours.
The Arts Department at LSHS is looking forward to welcoming you, making wonderful music and
having a great time.
