Peregrine have worked with J Shoes for a number of years after meeting at a London trade show back in 2012. Manufacturing quality garments at a competitive price, we both have a similar customer, looking for a practical product with excellent design detail to separate it from the mass produced high street.Over the years we have worked together on a number of collabo-rations. This season we have gone the extra mile, teaming up with British shoe manufacturer “ Sanders” from Northampton and British wool and cotton manufacturers “Hainsworth & British Millerain” from Yorkshire to produce the perfect chukka boot. Made in England from British fabric it complements the Per-egrine knitwear and jackets perfectly. We have always been a true believer of stick to what you know and do what you do better than anyone else. With close to 1000 years’ experience between the companies, we have worked to everyone’s strengths and made something truly beautiful.

The collection has been labelled 220, which is how many collections we have made over the years. The company dates back to 1796, when Thomas Glover started as a hand frame knitter just outside Leicester. Over the years the com-pany has had its ups and downs, from the glory days in the 1950s when we employed over 300 people in our Leicester factory, to 1987 when UK manufac-turing was abandoned for cheap overseas imports. 220 years on, and eight gen-erations of Glovers at the helm, the company has been given a new lease of life by eighth generation Tom Glover, employing a small team of skilled machinists in our Manchester factory, choosing to focus on quality products, that are unique and individual.

Q: Firstly, for those readers who aren’t familiar with Peregrine Clothing, please can you tell us about your company and brand? Peregrine is the brand name of J G Glover & Co, an English manufacturer with over 200 years heritage. We have always specialised in Knitwear and later introduced jackets into our British made collection during the 80s. Today we carry a collection of garments for both ladies and men that uses locally sourced materials, hand crafted in our Manchester factory.Q: What, or who, are the creative inspirations for the Peregrine brand?We draw our inspiration from our history, past collections, the English weather and our surrounding environment.Q: Is there a typical Peregrine Clothing customer?We appeal to a wide range of customers who choose to wear the brand in a variety of different environments, we enjoy being diverse.Q: More than 60% of your sales are to overseas markets. Why do you feel Peregrine Clothing has been so well-received by foreign buyers?The made in England label is more respected and sought after overseas, many look to replicate the quintessentially English look and like that our product is made here in the UK.Q: Your showroom in Clifton, Bristol, uses an interior dressing room concept. Can you explain the rationale for that? The idea was based on a Gentlemen’s dressing room, we decided to have a space that people could visit to take time to try on the collection in a comfortable surrounding that wasn’t rushed, allowing them time to appreciate not only the garments but the whole brand and its story.Q:There’s a lot of talk about the resurgence and passion for buying British-made products again, with customers willing to pay a slightly higher cost if they know it’s been made in the UK than outsourced abroad. What do you put this down to – is it British manufacturers raising their game and improving their designs and quality of craftsmanship or consumers changing their buying habits in light of more press attention and wanting to support British manufacturing, or something else?Consumers are becoming far more aware of quality manufacturing verses

They are now beginning to take pride in their purchases, and the background story to the products they choose to invest in.Q: You have decided to retain production in England rather than outsource to the Far East. How important is the ‘Made in England’ label to your brand?Made in England is very important to us, it is a key part of our business and our main USP. We employ a number of people in our Manchester factory and we are very proud of this.Q: You opened a pop-up store in London fairly recently. Is this a forerunner to a permanent showroom in the capital any time soon? Yes, as we open our new retail store in Bristol, we will soon be looking at London as our next destination.Q:Aside from your range of knitwear, you have recently developed a range of outdoor-related accessories. Is this a range you are looking to expand further still? The Peregrine range grows year on year as we enter new markets and obtain new customers. Knitwear and jackets will always remain our key focus, but we always introduce new ideas into the collection like woven shirts and trousers which compliment the existing range.Q: How important is the selection and quality of materials in creating your products and do you only source fabric from the British Isles?We try to source all our materials from the UK, apart from the Merino wool which is sourced from Peru. Fabric selection is one of the key aspects when we look to produce quality knitwear and jackets.Q: You collaborated with J Shoes to create a range of boots eighteen months ago; why was that, and what do you look for in collaborations with other specialists?We work with J Shoes because of their designs and attention to detail which works alongside Peregrine. We have since brought Sanders on board to create a Made in England shoe, collaborating with Hainsworth and British Millerain for fabrics, using design detail true to both ourselves and J.Q: Your range of clothes have been described as ‘heritage chic’, which is no doubt in reference to the fact that your company was founded almost 250 years ago. Can you elaborate on how you’ve been able to celebrate your heritage whilst being stylish and fashionable at the same time, which I imagine is not a combination that is easy to achieve?The range is updated year on year, taking core styles that have worked and re-fashioning them into new designs to keep the collection current. The brand will always be labelled Heritage through our history and by remaining experimental, mixing fabrics and both classic and contemporary styles we have adapted the collection to appeal to a more fashionable market.Q: Finally, what’s next for Peregrine Clothing and what are your ambitions for the brand? For Peregrine to be a respected brand, that can be found in pockets around the world as a fun, thoughtful, honest brand that makes quality clothing with both style and a story

100 years ago the worldwas a different place engulfed by The Great War.

In 1916 the J. G. Gloverfactory was a different place too. Producing knitwear for the front line during WW1. Whilst predominently manufacturing chunky socks from British wool for the front line soldiers. NAAFI went on to became our biggest client in the 20s as we made the commando jumper and later the Wooly pully.Which was uniform for the Navy, RAF and the SAS, due to it’s hardwearing and practical qualities.

100 years on and we drawinspiration from our earlier work, re-fashioning the woolypully using a soft merino woolwith waxed cotton shoulderpads.

MIEWhy buy British? A lot of people have jumped onto the “Buy British campaign” and Made in England is a label in itself. How-ever, to us this means a lot more; it may not be essential to buy British, but it is to buy quality. We have been making knitwear and jackets for over 200 years and have learnt a lot along the way. Ensuring we produce quality garments that stamd the test of time?The benefits of buying British include tracing where the gar-ments are made, knowing the people who handcraft the garments are receiving a good salary and working in the right conditions. The garments are made with love and by people who understand our brand and wear our products. The garments are not shipped around the world before hanging on the shop floor, which in essence can only be good for the environment.For British people we are supporting British communities, offer-ing secure jobs that people are proud of. A majority of our work-force have been in the factory for decades and only look to hang up theirs boots when they retire.This may not be as important to other countries around the world but buying a British-made product gives it character and makes it unique. You can wear our brand with pride, knowing it’s not mass produced or seen on absolutely everyone.
