Umbrellas in January? It would appear that we are in the midst of a January thaw. A welcome reprieve from the extreme subzero temps we saw in the first part of the month. The days are getting longer and the sun, when it is out, seems to have more power. Good news for building. Having just returned from IBS in Orlando, there is reason for optimism in the industry. NAHB expects construction on new single family houses to rise 10% in 2017 and it also expects multi-family and remodeling to hold their own and not decrease. The challenges that our industry sees on a national level are very similar to what we are seeing on our local level. The biggest challenge is finding a labor force. The existing labor force is very skilled but also retiring every day. The workers lost in the “Great Recession” left our industry, were retrained and never returned. NAHB has put out a video promoting working in the building trades. There is a link to it on our new and improved website www.midmnba.org.

To do our part in combating the labor shortage, on January 19th, a contingent of MMBA members sat with a group of 40 plus high school students from Pequot Lakes High School and introduced them to what a career in the trades would look like.

There were 7 trades represented:

• Autocad and Interior Design (Tricia Peters and Larry Geschwill)

• Electrical (Jesse Grant)

• Exterior Finishes and Roofing (Severin Neumann)

• Gas and Utilities (Gerry Traut, Rod Pierzinski and Chris Olson)

• General Contracting and Construction (Cory Hendricks and Jeremy Johnston)

• Heavy Equipment and Excavating (Scott Mudgett and Darrell Thomas)

• Plumbing/HVAC (Mike Scott)

There were tables set up for each trade and the students spent time at each table in a sort of speed dating format. The response from the students and their guidance counselors was tremendous. This was a first of its kind event and we really hope to repeat it at other schools in our service area. Lakeland News was there along with a reporter from Pine & Lakes newspaper. As soon as we can we will get links to the stories on the website. Special thanks to Mike Scott and Superior Mechanical for hosting the event, The Builders Group for sponsoring and to all the MMBA Members who gave of their busy time to help. MEMBERSHIP APPRECIATION OPEN HOUSE WAS A HUGE SUCCESS!The Membership Celebration that took place on Friday January 6, 2017 was a huge success. We would like to thank all of the MMBA Members who took time out of their busy schedule to come and join us for some networking. Congratulations to the newly inducted 2017 MMBA Board of Directors. I would like to welcome the two newly elected board of directors Larry Oaks (Wausau Homes) and Wes Mink (Start to Finish Builders & Remodelers). Their terms will go thru December 2019. I would like to thank former MMBA Board Director LoAnn Reponen (Culligan Water Conditioning) who installed the Board at the Membership Celebration.

Who better to recruit members than a Member of the association? You are one of the best recruiting tools the association has.Ask yourself, why did I join the association? We do not have a One Size Fits All for Benefits of belonging to the association, which means that the benefits truly are enormous.

When talking with prospective members, one of the first questions they ask is: What’s in it for me? I begin the conversation with asking them what they hope to get out of joining the association. One of the common answers is New BUSINESS and NETWORKING. That’s where the Current Membership comes into play.

When New Members join the association, we announce this on page 36 in the monthly newsletter. The purpose for this is according to the MMBA Bylaws, the membership has the opportunity to provide feedback on these businesses. Rarely do I receive an email phone call from members letting me know how happy they are to see Company X joining the association. The purpose for this is to let us know if a business is joining that you may have had a relationship with that you would for whatever reason,

would not approve of joining the association.

35 Pequot Lakes students, grades 10-12, took advantage of the great opportunity to attend a Tech. Education Luncheon hosted at Superior Mechanical and by the Mid-Minnesota Builder’s Association on Thursday January 19, 2017. The students participated in speed networking with area employers and businesses that employ people interested in the technical trades. They gave information on their career path and the jobs that are available to our students in the region.

This is a pilot program MMBA plans to take to all area high schools within the area MMBA serves. If you would like to be involved in an upcoming Future Skilled Trades Orientation, please contact the MMBA Office.

Dear Membership,

We hope this letter finds you well and successful. Your elected Board of Directors has been meeting over the past few months and has come to the conclusion to adjust our path of business to better serve our Mission Statement. If you are unfamiliar with this statement written many years ago at our association’s conception here it is:

MMBA Mission Statement:The Mid-Minnesota Builder’s Association (MMBA) of Crow Wing, Wadena, and Lower Cass Counties, fundamental purpose is to foster a healthy business environment for the home building industry, and to engage in activities that strengthen competitiveness, professionalism, and the public’s confidence in the industry.

Your Board of Directors along with support from membership has determined that our path to achieving the promise of our mission statement needs to be reevaluated and changed. We currently feel our association resembles something similar to this:

As you can see we feel a large focus has been placed on the networking/social activities with very little effort being placed on government affairs, education, and MMBA branding. Our goal is to create a more balanced approach

to our association to better serve our mission statement. We hope this new approach will not only bring success to our association but success to our membership as well. This new balanced approach is designed to offer the entire membership something they want, need, and can use.

Your support and guidance towards this new effort is welcome and much needed and appreciated. Our balanced approach will resemble and focus on 3 major components:

Education:• Continuing education classes for all members per

state requirements

• Youth outreach and education, getting our future members and employees prepared for work in our proud industry

• Educational classes for our members regarding liens, human resources, and business law

• Scholarship, Youth Program, Continuing Education (Builder, Plumber, etc.)

Government Affairs:• Connect, stay in contact, and educate members

regarding local governments

• Connect and communicate with local inspectors

• Maintain and manage our local legal action fund

• Advocacy, Local Units of Government, Member Day at the Capital

NAHB Congratulates Donald Trumpon Becoming the Nation’s 45th President

NAHB congratulated Donald Trump today after he was sworn as the 45th President of the United States of America.

In an official statement, NAHB Chairman Granger MacDonald said: “The nation’s home builders look forward to working with President Trump and bipartisan leaders of the 115th Congress to keep housing a national priority, to provide regulatory relief for the nation’s small business community and to advance policies that will expand homeownership and rental housing opportunities for all Americans.”

In the weeks following the Nov. 8 elections, NAHB was busy laying the groundwork for a successful year in 2017. NAHB leaders held extensive discussions and sent background information to the Trump team about a number of significant issues, including President Obama’s Executive Order that drastically changes development rules in and around floodplains.

NAHB looks forward to working in a bipartisan manner with the new Trump administration and Republican and Democratic congressional leaders in the 115th Congress to tackle critical issues facing the housing industry.Specifically, NAHB will be working with policymakers to:

• Reform the regulatory process;• Ensure creditworthy home buyers and small

businesses can get mortgages and loans;• Protect the mortgage interest deduction and

expand the Low Income Housing Tax Credit; and• Enact comprehensive housing finance reform that

safeguards the 30-year mortgage.

NAHB believes this pro-housing legislative and regulatory agenda will spur job growth and keep the housing and economic recovery moving forward.
