Smart bench expansion
NICOLE MCCAIN
@nickymccain
O
ver 800 people made use of
the Isabelo smart bench in-
stalled on the corner of Wale
and Adderley streets in just one
month.
Andnow theCapeTownPartner-
ship plans to roll out another
bench to Pier Place in the next few
weeks.
The bench has an access point
that receives the Internet signal
from a nearby building and broad-
casts it as WiFi through the access
point attached to the mast of the
bench, explains the partnerships
Alan Cameron.
The solar panels above the top
sail fuel the batteries that power
the electronic equipment includ-
ing the USB charging points in the
central pillar, he says.
In April, only a month after the
bench was installed, 800 people
made use of it, says Cameron.
It transforms a place between
destinations to a destination in
and of itself by offering the servi-
ces of free WiFi and mobile device
charging points. Within the first
sixweeks of placement the users of
the bench burnt through 100 gigs
of bandwidth thats a lot of band-
width to consume via the screen of
a phone!
Users have been noted at the
bench at all times of the day, and
even in the rain, says Cameron.
Clustering people of all walks of
life to the area around the bench
means the area becomes a safer
space.
It also becomes a more welcom-
ing space, with greater opportuni-
ty for incidental conversations
with strangers the type of conver-
sations that lead one to understand
that strangers are often friendly
people, quite willing to lend you
their USB connection to charge
your phone.
This camaraderie builds the
community spirit of the place, and
making the local a prouder South
African, andhelping tourists toun-
derstand why locals love living
here, he says.
Besides making the public space
more equitable, the free WiFi pro-
vides a bridge between South Afri-
cas extreme digital divide, Camer-
on believes.
Current estimates find two in
three South Africans are unable to
afford internet access, and in the
Western Cape it was found that
some households spend more than
25% of their income on ICT related
costs (data and airtime) as they
look for economic opportunities
online.
The business model behind the
bench relies on the sale of market
research, Cameron explains.
These funds are used to pay for the
costs associated with the bench
the creation of it, the set-up and
maintenance as well as the band-
width costs.
The bench currently in Wale
Street was installed in partnership
with Wesgro, the investment and
trade promotion agency for the
Western Cape, and the survey
questions posed to users are most-
ly about local and international
tourist experiences, to establish a
feedback loop to better inform
Cape Town Partnership projects,
such as City Walk Saturdays, and
to pass on to relevant stakeholders.
Besides providing market re-
search, advertising is also an ave-
nue for funding. When talking
about funding market research,
its important to also state that any
data collected is done so in line
with the Public Information Act
so at no point is there an abuse of
the confidence placed in us as hold-
ers of this information.
The Pier Place bench will work
on a similar model, with a corpo-
rate sponsor showing interest in
contributing towards the public
activation of the square.

bench provides free

LEGENDS WINNER: Peoples Post journalist Samantha Lee (23) was named Local
Newspapers Journalist of the Year for 2016 on Friday 3 June at the Media24 Legends
Awards. Legends is a national competition awarding excellence in the Media24 news
division. Lee joined the Peoples Post team in 2014 and writes for the Mitchells Plain
edition. Here she is pictured with Peoples Post editor Cecilia Hume. Lee says: It is not
without the contributions of the community that I have achieved this success. It is a
great honour to tell the stories of everyday heroes who strive to rise above the stigma
of perceptions that drugs and violence prevail; a place that many strive to move away
from and forget. It is a privilege to be associated with a publication that has afforded
me a lifelong dream of giving back to the streets I walked as a child. This is not only a
win for me, but a win for Mitchells Plain. I am proud to say I was born and raised there.
Thank you to you, who not only read my work, but continue to support and contribute
to my current and future success. PHOTO: MARITA MEYER

INTENTION TO SUBMIT A PROCESS
OUTLINING THE DRAFTING OF THE NEW
TERM OF OFFICE IDP TO COUNCIL
Section 28(2) of the Municipal Systems Act 32 of 2000, requires that the municipality consult
the local community before adopting the process (which will be contained in the process
plan) of drafting the new Integrated Development Plan. The main steps for the proposed
process plan in terms of timelines are outlined below:
During the months of August to October 2016, the City will invite communities, ward
committees and sector organisations to help prioritise the Citys initiatives at ward,
subcouncil and Citywide level. This phase will also include consultation with other spheres
of government to ensure that our plans are aligned.
During November and December 2016, departments will give feedback via subcouncils
on issues and comments that communities have raised.
March 2017 will see the draft IDP and Budget tabled to Council.
During March to April 2017, the public will be able to comment on the draft IDP and Budget.
It is envisaged that Council will approve the new IDP for the next five years during May 2017.
The approved IDP will be made public soon thereafter.
The product of this consultation process is a Process Plan for the drafting of the next five-year IDP.
Comments can be submitted from 7 June 2016 until 27 June 2016, to your local
Subcouncil, library or to the following email address: [email protected].

School kitchen feeds local kids

F
eeding hungry learners at HJ Kroneberg
Primary School is now easier, after the
school recieved a brand new kitchen.
On Thursday 2 June thee school accepted
the 124th kitchen to be created through the
Peninsula School Feeding Association
(PFSA)s Buy-a-brick initiative.
Situated in the heart of Kensington, with
a learner base of 588 learners, the school
currently has almost 60% who hail from
the severely economically disadvantaged
communities of Langa, Guguletu and
Khayelitsha.
SamanthaWilliams, feeding coordinator
at the school, explainsmanyof the families
are unable to pay fees due to their circum-
stances. Much of our school budget is sup-
plemented by numerous fundraising activ-
ities and donations. Our school is totally
committed to giving our learners an excel-
lent foundation and providing for the child
holistically. An integral part of that commit-
ment is to ensure that they are receiving
proper nourishment.
At the launch of the new kitchen, princi-
pal Yul Cupido pointed out the importance
of the feeding programme at the school.
Unemployment is rife in so many areas
surrounding the school and as educators we
cannot allow our children to go hungry. In
May 2014 we joined PFSA and currently
have 275 learners being fed two hot meals
daily. Initially learnerswere fed in an empty
classroom, however we soon needed the
classroom and learners were fed outside
seated on benches. We were desperately in
needof a feeding room. That iswhen the staff
of a leading corporate cameonboard tobuild
the new facility.
The PFSA was established in 1958 when
the government at the time discontinued the
national school feeding programme.
Since then, PSFA has been providing
meals to hungry school children across the
Western Province, including distant rural
areas.

JOBSEEKERS DATABASE CLEAN-UP
CAMPAIGN
Register or update your details on the Citys
jobseekers database
The jobseekers database clean-up project is an initiative of the City of Cape Town aimed at
registering all members of the community who are unemployed and interested in temporary
basic to semi-skilled work opportunities provided through City projects. It is also aimed at
updating the details of all those who have already registered on the jobseekers database.
The intention is to have a database with valid details of all those registered (i.e. their skills,
contact numbers and addresses).
Since more than a month ago, contact details have been verified telephonically and per SMS
as part of this project.
During phase 3 of this project, EPWP workers will do door-to-door visits in communities
to assist people in completing jobseekers database registration forms, which will then be
submitted to subcouncil offices for electronic capturing.
Members of the community are encouraged to:
Assist the EPWP workers in doing their job
Keep a certified copy of their IDs available as this needs to accompany their registration
form for capturing
Only allow workers with reflector bibs containing the full project name and visible contact
details into your home.
The project will run from Monday 30 May 2016 to Thursday 30 June 2016.
If you are unemployed and interested in work through the EPWP, make sure you register on
the Citys jobseekers database at your local subcouncil office.
If you are already registered, make sure you update your details at your local subcouncil
office regularly to improve your chances of employment. Jobseekers who do not update their
details in a 12-month period will have their names and therefore their registration removed
from the database. Also remember to re-register if you have moved from one place to
another in the city.
Visit your local subcouncil office for more information.

Loving the legacy of District Six
GARY VAN DYK
@gvdcapejazz
W
atching District Six Kanala one of the
hottest hits on the theatre scene at the
moment its easy to feel that the partnership
of the late Taliep Petersen and David Kra-
mer has been a university of sorts.
The partnership started in 1986 and some
of those laaities who started in those pro-
ductions have grown into seasoned profes-
sionals inspiring the next generation for the
stage.
One of those youngsters who started out
in those first productions is Woodstocks
singer/actorLoukmanAdamsandwatching
him in action in this new production its
easy to see why he is now an inspiration to
a new generation on the entertainment
scene.
From District Six - The Musical, Poison,
Kat and the Kings and somanymore leading
up to what could be seen as a senior role
in thenewproductionbyDavidKramer, and
maybe he is now the mentor to some of this
talented cast of young entertainers.
In a way that is probably what David
(Kramer) was looking at when casting this
production and getting Alistair Izobell to di-
rect the musical side of things as well, he
says.
Growing up in this type of production we
know the reference point of what is needed.
This cast is mainly in their twenties, they
dont know about the legacy of District Six,
the legacy of the first productions and that
is where we can guide them.
We were lucky to hear the real stories
from people like Salie Daniels, Al Hen-
dricks and Cyril Valentine who lived the
stories that we were telling and they made
it come alive for us.
With this production I amglad that I can
bepart of guiding the youngsters tomake
that story come alive andmaintain the leg-
acy of District Six.
Loukman adds that he does not see his
part in the production as a senior role.
Noman, Im still too young to a be a sen-
ior, he laughs.
Part of the lessons I learnt during those
early years was humility. Were all part of
the same cast doing our best to put on the
best show.
When I started out I was treated with the
same respect as any member of the cast and
it still stands me in good stead today. I try
to teach these young entertainerswhat Iwas
taught and hope that they learn from it.
An integral part of being in this produc-
tion is acknowledging the joy that the pro-
duction is bringing to the many people who
lived in the area and introducing a new gen-
eration to the injustice of forced removals.
Every night we can feel the audience en-
joying every memory, he says.
V District Six Kanala is at the Fugard Theatre, Cale-
don Street, Cape Town until Sunday 3 July. Bookings
and infor from 021 461 4554 or reserve your seat via
Computicket.com.
Loukman Adams, left, as Salie Gramophone the musical coach in the hilarious scene of a
typical training session of Malay choir before the annual competition.

HAROLD CRESSY HIGH
Birdies and bogeys
help build new hall
GARY VAN DYK
@gvdcapejazz
B
irdies and bogeys played their part in
Harold Cressy Highs fundraising drive
to complete its new school hall project.
The fund received a significant boost with
a cash injection of more than R100 000 from
its well-supported golf day that was held at
King David Mowbray Golf Club on Thurs-
day 26 May.
The event was organised by the not-for-
profit Kensington based community organi-
sation, PlaySport4Life, and theHaroldCres-
sy Alumni Association.
At the event, with more than 100 players
participating, a number of local businesses
such as Ludski Auto Repairs, Gatti Ice
Cream, Spitfire Grill, Market Toyota Athlo-
ne, At Your Service and Giant Hyper played
their part by sponsoring holes.
The head of Play Sport4Life, Miles Octo-
ber, who is also a Cressy old boy, said the
response was overwhelming particularly
from ex-Cressyites.
It is awesome to see howkeen the old stu-
dents were to get involved to play, perform
or sponsor in an event that will benefit the
school in the long term.
We have even received a hole sponsor-
ship from an ex-student in Australia.
It is an ambitious project that the Harold
Cressy Alumni Association has undertak-
en. It already has the first phase, the basic
school hall, in place.
It now needs a further R1.5m to complete
the second phase, the wings attached to the
building.
The four-ball who played their way to first prize in the Harold Cressy Golf Day are, from left,
Rodney Richards, Christie Cloete, Clint Alfino and Keith February.

Time for elderly to shine
Ride in thanks
for gift of life
GARY VAN DYK
@gvdcapejazz
A father from Retreat is taking
on a motorbike trip with a dif-
ference to repay a gift of life.
Almost 38 years ago Tony
Lawrences daughter, Janine,
had to undergo an emergency
blood transfusion at the Red
CrossWarMemorial Childrens
Hospital.
At the time Janine was only
five days old and her condition
was considered to be incredibly
serious. Without the transfu-
sion she stood very little chance
of having a normal life and the
possibility of an early deathwas
a harsh reality for the family.
The doctors and nurses at the
Red Cross Childrens Hospital
did a wonderful job and Janine
quickly recovered and grew up
to be a very healthy adult.
Now, Tony, a proud dad and
stroke survivor himself, is rais-
ing awareness and money for
the current paediatric ICU cam-
paign by taking on a 1600km en-
durance ride that he will aim to
complete in 24 hours.
Our family is eternally
grateful for giving Janine the
gift of life, he says.
I am 61 and a stroke survi-
vor. I have also previously sur-
vived a ruptured appendix and
bowel obstruction which result-
ed in an extended stay in ICU.
In order to create awareness
and funding for Red Cross I will
attempt to ride 1600km in 24
hours but I am planning to
complete it in 20 hours on my
motorcycle with my daughter
as pillion. This is my first time
having a pillion rider on an en-
durance ride, and also her first
real pillion ride.
Tony says they will be start-
ing out at 00:01 on the morning
of Saturday 18 June and end at
about 20:00.
I must emphasise that this is
not a race, but an endurance
ride which is well planned and
for which I have to prepare both
physically and mentally, says
Tony.
There are challenges and
risks, but the planning helps to
overcome these. I have previ-
ously done 1600km in 16.5 hours
and 2000km in 22.5 hours.
Therefore, I am confident of
finishing the ride within the
time frame.
The route will take them
north on the N7 with fuel stops
at Citrusdal, Vanrhynsdorp,
Calvinia, Brandvlei, Keimoes,
Pofadder, Springbok, Bitterfon-
tein, andCitrusdal again, before
the last stop at the Red Cross
Hospital.
The funds raisedwill go to the
R100m-plus upgrade and expan-
sion of the ICU, which will see
capacity increased from 22 bed
spaces to 39 bed spaces.
V To support Tony visit www.backa-
buddy.co.za/champion/project/rid-
ing4redcross.
Tony Lawrence and his daughter, Janine, are taking to the road to
raise money for the Red Cross Hospital.

C
haeli Mycroft (21) and Anita Engel-
brecht (23) became the first wheelchair
athletes to successfully participate and
complete the gruelling Comrades Mara-
thon held on Sunday 29 May in Durban.
After months of in-depth conversation
and preparation, Mycroft and Engelbretch
made history. Mycroft and her running
partners, James Chevallier and Brett Glen,
entered the race as Team Beastie while
TeamBlitsigeBlitsiewasmade up of Engel-
bretch and her running partner, Hilton
Murray.
Team Beastie finished in 10:51:45 and
overall 8427th position, withMycroft being
the 1358thwomanhome.TeamBlitsigeBlit-
sie finished in 10:57:51 overall in 9147th po-
sition with Anita being the 1512th woman
home. Both teams won bronze medals.
Mycroft says therewas extra pressure on
them to do well.
With this being the first time thatwheel-
chair athletes were participating in the
Comrades, we had to do well. Getting a
bronze medal proved that we have a right
to be part of this amazing race and this
opens the door for participation by other
wheelchair athletes.
There were several aspects that needed
to be taken into consideration before being
able to attempt the 89 kilometre downhill
race. Custom-made wheelchairs needed to
be specifically made for each athlete. Their
running partners participated in several
marathons in preparation for the Com-
rades.
Both athletes believe that people living
with disabilities should be given the same
opportunities as able-bodied individuals.
Mycroft says: We had to fight their way
to being allowed to take part in the mara-
thon and they believe things are beginning
to change for people with disabilities as
well.
They believe in building an inclusive so-
ciety for all and they used the Comrades
Marathon as a fundraiser to support the
Chaeli Sports and Recreation Club (CSRC).
CSRC was founded in February 2010 in
an effort to provide opportunities for inclu-
sive sport to act as a catalyst in providing
opportunities for differently-abled chil-
dren and adults to experience the therapeu-
tic and healing magic that comes with be-
ing a member of a team and the joy of exer-
cise.
Mycroft has cerebral palsy (spastic quad-
riplegic) and is currently reading for an
honours degree in Social Policy and Man-
agement at the University of Cape Town.
She is an ability activist, international
awardwinner and co-founder of TheChaeli
Campaign, a non-profit organisation based
in Plumstead that provides services to chil-
drenwith disabilities. She has a fierce spir-
it and believes that people living with disa-
bilities can achieve the impossible if given
the opportunity. In September 2015 Chaeli
became the first female quadriplegic to
summit Mount Kilimanjaro.
Team
Chaeli
conquers
Chaeli Mycroft and Anita Engelbretch where
the first wheelchair athletes to enter the
comrades marathon and they are proud that
they were able to finish the race, which
shows that even people with disabilities
deserve equal opportunities just like able-
bodied people.

According to league director,

nized sport. Some schools are go-
ing as far as building dedicated

courage after school practices and
interschool sports days as well as
employing coaches and managers
to oversee teams, says Botha.

More than 100 of Cape Towns fittest athletes
came together to compete for the title of the
Deep Souths Fittest held in Kommetjie over
the weekend.
The aim of the event is to bring the fitness
community together, connect athletes of dif-
ferent fitness levels, training facilities and
regions.
The athletes were tested on a broad range
of fitness modalities across varied time
spans. From strength to power, balance, co-
ordination, muscular endurance and meta-
bolic conditioning levels as well as athletic
and gymnastic skill.
The athletes, aged between 18 and 45, had
the choice of enteringas a teamoras individ-
uals. Athletes were allocated a one-hour
time slot to complete three workouts
throughout the course of the weekend.
The scoring is based on a combination of
time (how quickly a workout is completed),
number of repetitions completed in a set
time and heaviest weight lifted on the bar-
bell movements.
The event is about forging friendships
and community spirit and to celebrate
health and fitness. To strengthen the reputa-
tion and competency of athleticism in the re-
gion.Aswell as hosting ahigh qualityCross-
Fit style sporting event, says Dave Giloi
event organiser and professional fitness
coach.
Who is the fittest of them all?
Andrew OBrien from Crossfit Mother City
performed a two metre long jump repeatedly
as many times as possible in two minutes
during the competition held in Kommetjie over
the weekend.
