Caregivers from the Friends Day Centreat Alexandra Psychiatric Hospital areback at work again as a week of strikes

draws to a halt.Over a dozen caregivers downed tools to

demand a R500 salary increase. Gloria Yoza-na, shop steward for the National Union ofPublic Service and Allied Workers, says thecaregivers’ salaries range from R1 500 toR3 000, with some of the staff having workedfor the hospital for over 20 years.

“We are demanding a decent wage.”shesays. “We have to pay rent and travelling ex-penses on these salaries and don’t even have

money to pay for our children’s school fees.”Many of the caregivers travel all the way

from Kraaifontein, Eersteriver and Dunoonto work every day.

Dalene Swart, spokesperson for the daycentre, says a mutual agreement wasreached on Friday 5 September which willsee staff back at work this week.

However, she declined to outline the de-tails of the agreement.

The centre is an NPO catering for over 100children with special needs and the sectorfacesmany challenges in obtaining funding,Swart explains.

“Many businesses have been forced to cuttheir corporate social investment budgetsand funding is no longer as easily available,”

says Swart.“However, the challenge is not in obtain-

ing funding, but in restrictions placed on thefunding. Many donations are earmarkedand can’t be diverted to salaries,” she says.

In addition, the centre also has to use thefunding to pay for overheads such as elec-tricity.

Naeemah Morkel, who has been workingat the centre for 15 years, earns R2 000.

“My son is also disabled but I can’t bringhim here because the fees are more than myentire salary,” she says.

Yozana warned that strikers would be-come increasingly violent if their demandswere not met.

Swart says the centre has been left reeling

after allegations of physical intimidation bystrikers against staffwho did not taking partin the strike.

But Swart says the centre continues tomaintain its standards of care. “Our thera-pists assisted non-striking staff, volunteersand parents in the classes. The only negativeimpact this has had on the pupils is fact thatdifferent carerswere feeding themand someof our pupils were not comfortable and atease with strangers because they have builtup a relationship with their class carers.”

Many pupils were kept home due to thedisruption, Swart says.“Some families evenhadadditional costs, because theyhad to em-ploy a carer to look after their children athome.”

A new scam is looking tocash in on pensions. Pen-sioners are phoned and

asked to verify their details.A Rylands woman, who re-

quested not to be named, wasrecently called by such a con -artist asking her for her hus-band’s ID number and the lastfour digits of his SouthAfricanSocial SecurityAgency (Sassa)card.

“The man said my hus-band’s pension will be stoppedbecause there was a problemwhen he registered. He said allheneededwere those twonum-bers and I must not give himthe PIN number,” she says.

Although she was initially skeptical, shesays the scam was highly convincing andthe person on the other line even gave hera reference number.

Shortly afterwards, the man phoned herdaughter asking for similar details, whichmade the woman question the caller’s mo-tives.

She reported the incident at her nearestSassa office the next day, providing an affi-davit.

“Fortunately my husband had with-drawn all of his money earlier in the monthbecause the con artist immediately pur-chased electricity and airtime with his ac-count,” she says.

“It might not have been a lot of money,but how much can this person withdrawfrom all these people?”

Shivani Wahab, the Sassa regionalspokesperson, warns grant beneficiaries

against falling prey to scamsandothermar-keting tactics via the use of cellphone tech-nology. A number of scams have been re-ported targeting grant beneficiaries, shesays.

She urges all Sassa pensioners to not usetheir Sassa card for the following: as securi-ty for loans or other financial services; anySMSes where companies offer productssuch as airtime against your Sassa card;any deductions against your card, “exceptfor one funeral policy deduction that doesnot exceed 10% of the social grant value,which Sassa has authorised in terms of leg-islation”.

Beneficiaries can protect themselves bykeeping their Sassa card and PIN safe at alltimes and never divulging the details of ei-ther to anybody, Wahab says.V Those beneficiaries whose accounts are unlawfullydebited with deductions can call 0800 60 01 60 tolodge a dispute.

A Kensington family has called for ac-tion against what they believe to beunnecessarily heavy-handed polic-

ing. This after aman,Ronald Steenvelt,wasallegedly assaultedbyaCapeTownTacticalResponse Team (TRT) officer.

During a stop-and-search operation inAcre Road on Monday 1 September, policemade a commotion outside their home thatevening, says the Steenvelt’s wife CharnellFontini.

“We were inside talking about our day.I had gone to open a lay-bye account be-cause our baby is due soon and I was tellinghim about it. We heard a noise at the gateand Ronald went out to check,” she says.

When Steenvelt opened the door to inves-tigate, he was pulled outside and physicallyassaulted, she claims.

“He was surrounded by police officers.They pushed him head first into the side ofthe police van. It left a dent!” she alleges.“He lay on the pavement shaking as if hewas having a seizure and his side was wet.We couldn’t see if it was water or blood.”

The police officers then forced him intotheir vehicle and took him to KensingtonPolice Station, she claims. Fontini says the

officers did not search her home.Kensington police station commander

Lieutenant-Colonel Bernice Josephs con-firmed a case of assault had been opened atthe station and is under investigation bythe Independent Police Investigative Direc-torate.

The family claims the accused was underthe influence of alcohol at the time. Threefamilymembershaveattested that theoffic-er’s breath reeked of alcohol.

Steenvelt’s brother, Stanley, says acharge of common assault has been openedagainst his brother. The family claims theyhave no idea what incident led to thecharge. “Police often carry out operationshere because they think we are sellingdrugs. But in all these years, they have nev-er foundany evidence.Mybrotherhas donetime in the past, but has no outstandingwarrants or reason to be arrested,” hemaintains.

In May 2013, then pregnant Acre Roadresident Desnay Abrahams claimed shewas assaulted by TRT officers during a po-lice raid (“Assault claims after raid”, Peo-ple’s Post, 28 May 2013). She said officersstormed into neighbouring homes withguns drawn. Three residents were arrestedfor drug possession. Abrahams claimed shewas assaulted by aggressive police officers.

WINNING THE WAR ON SUPERBUGS: As part of Pharmacy Week, which ended yesterday, pharmacistsat the Woodstock Community Health Centre spoiled their patients while creating awareness at thesame time. The healthcare professionals focused on the proper use of antibiotics as overuse has ledto the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and multi-drug resistant bacteria, also known assuperbugs. A World Health Organisation (Who) report released in April states that this “serious threatis no longer a prediction for the future, but is happening right now in every region of the world andhas the potential to affect anyone, of any age, in any country”. According to Who, antibiotic resistance– when bacteria changes so that antibiotics can no longer eradicate them – is now “a major threatto public health”. Naresh Naidoo, the pharmacist at the Woodstock clinic, reminded patients to onlytake antibiotics when prescribed by a doctor. Patients should also take the antibiotic exactly as pre-scribed without skipping any doses and should never share or take leftover antibiotics. The Salt River Improvement Dis-trict, which was officially launchedlastweek, expects to bring addition-

al services such as cleaning and securityto the areas between Salt River, Albert,Durham and Victoria roads.Their mission is to create an inviting

and safe business district for visitorsand shoppers alike, says Gene Lohrentz,the manager of Geocentric, which is re-sponsible for the management of the im-provement district.“The full operational deployment of

the improvement district includes a ded-icated full-time manager, public safetydeployment of foot patrollers and patrolvehicles and an urban maintenancegroup thatwill performadditional clean-ing and urban maintenance tasks,” hesays.The organisation will also assist the

homeless andvulnerable, Lohrentz says.“Geocentric has offered permanent em-ployment for previously homeless peo-ple living at one of the shelters in SaltRiver. They will form part of the urban

maintenance and cleaning team.”In addition, he says, the improvement

district will set aside some of the budgetto assist street people and those in need.The improvement district is funded

through a tariff levied in the special rat-ing area: a community-driven and fund-ed model which is subject to the rulesand regulations governing public funds.The money will be used for a number

of projects, says the improvement dis-trict's chairperson Wessel Botes.These include top-up cleaning, securi-

ty officers and stations and the develop-ment of a business directory.Property owner Quintin Rossi is posi-

tive about the project.He says: “We allwant capital apprecia-

tion and a safe environment for busi-nesses and residents. This is the begin-ning of a cooperation to fight crime andgrime in the area.”Botes believes that Salt River busi-

nesses will thrive if traffic to the areacould be increased. “Salt River is in direneed of this improvement district. It willadd value to the area and we have re-ceived great response from people in thearea,” he says.

He has been serving up nicks and railson court for the last 12 years, andhopesto be ranked among the top 20 squash

players in the world by the age 28.But for now, Rondebosch Boys’ High

School pupil Jean-Pierre van der Merwe isbasking in the glory of his recent on-courtsuccess with the racket. The 17-year-old wascrowned the World Squash Federation(WFS) junior men’s champion after claim-ing gold at the championships in Namibiain July.Van der Merwe, a Kenilworth resident,

pinswinning the Consolation Plate inWind-hoek as his most valuable achievement todate.He first fell in love with the sport at the

age of five. “My parents both played socialsquash, so I developed an interest at a youngage and continued to explore the game. Isoon realised I really enjoyed to play andhada passion for it,” Van der Merwe says.“My parents recognised my talent and re-

alised I could possibly excel in the sport, sothey encouraged me.”Since first picking up the racket, the mat-

ric pupil hasmade a name for himself on thelocal and international squash scene.He has represented Western Province on

a junior and senior level, and was firstawarded junior South African colours in2010.At last year’s juniorUSAOpen,Vander

Merwe finished 34th in theunder-19 divisionand he was awarded senior WP colours inJune.“I excelled at provincial level; this moti-

vated me to continue training and doing my

best to carry on playing squash,” he says.“I was also fortunate enough to gave been

sponsored by Head, an international sport-sware and equipment company, from ayoung age. This made it easier to pursue my

squash career.”The Villager Squash Club member has

travelled the world thanks to his talent onthe court. Hehas represented SA inAmericaand Canada and has remained unbeaten inthe school’s league this year.And while he aims to make the sport his

career, he is also cognisant that he needs topay equal attention to his academics. Heplans to further his studies by attending atertiary institution after school and dreamsof attending a USA university on a squashscholarship.Three top universities – Trinity, Harvard

and Yale – have already shown interest inhaving Van der Merwe at their campuses.“I enjoy squash tremendously and need to

put in a lot of training time. But I work hardat my academics as I realise to get into uni-versity, I must have good grades,” he says.The love for the sport runs in the family

– his sister Kathleen is also a provincialplayer, having represented Boland ParelVallei.Van der Merwe credits the support from

his friends and family, as well as his spon-sor, as another catalyst for his success. “Ihave had so many wonderful opportunitiesand I am extremely grateful to my support-ive family and friends,” he says.“With this support structure and the fi-

nancial assistance from my sponsor, I havebeen able to pursuemy squash passionately.I want to continue playing to the best of myability, so that I can reach my dream.”
