Homes in Chamberlain Street and the sur- rounds have been hit by a woman con artist alleging to be a City of Cape Town employee. Claiming to attend to service delivery que- ries, she makes off with cellphones and lap- tops. However, police have had to give up the search after the trickster left no clues. The fraudster presents herself to domestic workers at Woodstock homes, claiming she needs to check for leaking roofs or a faulty electricity connection on behalf of the City. One Chamberlain resident, who asks not to be named, says she was away when the woman approached her domestic worker. “She told my housekeeper she was from the City and needed to check for leaking roofs. My housekeeper doesn’t usually let anyone in, but by chance the roof had been leaking. After being shown around the house by my housekeeper, she said she had forgotten her pen and went into my office. She must have taken my laptop then,” the aggravated resident says. Another Chamberlain Street resident, Carla Redelinghuys, says her home was also targeted. The con artist told the domestic worker she needed to check the electricity meter. “She asked to be shown around the house and kept asking my domestic worker to switch on the lights for her, trying to dis- tract her attention. She said she had forgot- ten her pen, and then ran off with my domes- tic worker’s cellphone. We fortunately don’t leave things lying around, or she could have taken more,” Redelinghuys says. Both residents say they reported the inci- dents to the police. Constable Candice Barnard, the Social Crime Prevention official for Woodstock po- lice, says only one case has been reported to them. “The suspect is allegedly a woman who presented herself as an employee of the City of Cape Town, checking for roof leaks. However, the case has been closed due to in- sufficient evidence or leads,” she says. Police are urging locals to be more vigilant and take proper security measures. Richard Bosman, the City’s executive di- rector for safety and security, says they are not aware of the scam. “Anyone who has fall- en foul of these tricksters must please report it to their local law enforcement agency so that a criminal investigation can be under- taken as soon as possible.” Bosman says City employees will always have identification, which homeowners should check. “Any official claiming to be representing the City of Cape Town must carry official identification on them, which they must display to the homeowner on re- quest. If residents have any doubt about the identity of our officials, they should please call the City on 0860 103 089 to verify their identity before allowing them entry.” Barnard urges residents not to open their doors to strangers and to opt to speak with possible criminals through a window if there is no security gate or intercom. An elderly Factreton woman returned froma Sunday morning service to find her homehad been consumed by fire.Mary Bestman’s house in Hawe Square

was gutted and all her belongings destroyedby smoke and water damage.

The 83-year-old’s home caught firearound 11:00 on Sunday 30 June while shewas at the Assemblies of God Church.Neighbours attempted to save the house,

but the blaze was too intense and defiedtheir efforts.Neighbour Alvina Onrusd rushed across

the park separating their homes when shesaw smoke rising from the house.“I saw smoke coming out of the room. My

neighbour was at church and my brotherZachery kicked the door in to get to theflames to put them out. But it was too late, and parts of the roof blew off. You could seethe flames rising up. It was scary,” she says.Another neighbour, Kevin Roberts,

looked through his window and saw darkclouds billowing from the house.“I saw smoke and I ran over,” he says.“Other neighbours were already there

andwere trying to get to the firewithout let-ting in more oxygen. But eventually we hadto kick the door down. We tried to use hosepipes to put out the fire, but the roof startedexploding.”The cause of the fire is not yet known,

says the Fire Department’s Toivo Ngqwebo.“Therewere two fire engines and a rescue

vehicle that responded from Epping, Good-wood and Milnerton fire stations, with a to-tal of 12 firefighters,” he says.Bestman returned home to find the blaze

already extinguished.“I was so shocked to see all those people

standing around my house,” she says.

“But I thank God He gave me the peaceof mind to deal with it.”Bestman believes the fire was caused by

an electrical fault in a multi-plug, whichcaused the TV to catch alight. Her bedroom was the worst affected, and

she has lost all of her clothing.“She only has the shoes on her feet,” says

Bestman’s friend, Vanessa Jones.

The rest of her home was also severelydamaged.“Only one room was destroyed in the

fire,” saysRoberts, “but the rest of thehousewas seriously damaged by the smoke andwater.”Bestman is currently living with friends.

Forget the yellow brick road.Woodstock and Salt River cyclists

will soon be wheeling their way alonga green road. After the success of a pilot project

which saw bicycle lanes painted greenin the CBD, the City of Cape Town nowplans to roll out the project along Al-bert Road. The City’s paint brushes should be

at work from next month, with thelanes ready for riding by March. With the city-wide non-motorised

transport infrastructure programmebeing rolled out, more colourised cyclepaths will be implemented. The Citybelieves this will go a long way to-wards creating safer cycling environ-ments, as well as encouraging otherroad users to share the public right ofway in the city, says Brett Herron, theMayoral Committee member forTransport. The announcement has been met

with mixed feelings.Cyclist Jackie Tizora says driver ed-

ucation needs to comewith the roll-outof the lanes.“Cyclists’ lives are in a constant danger

because of rude drivers that have no pa-tience whatsoever. There are other con-cerns that the City should provide solutionsfor, like drivers opening their doors whena cyclist is riding.”Fellow cyclist Quintin van Rooyens also

feels there needs to be more awareness.“Not many people are clued up, even cy-clists. I would like to seemore of these lanesimplemented. However, the City shouldlook at the spacing of streets; it’s nouse theyput the green lane there and then there isno space for buses and cyclists in one lane.”Woodstock’s Tougheda Davids is con-

cerned about the lanes’ safety aspects.“Albert Road is very busy and it’s danger-

ous for cyclists. The laneswill alsomake theroad narrower for cars.”Elmar Toeroek believes the lanes will do

nothing to improve safety for cyclists.

“Cycling is dangerous and demarcatingspace will not help that, although I supposeit is cheaper than building a separate side-walk.”Herron says the route was always on the

cards, but saw a delay due to the “2010 FIFAWorld Cup priorities at the time”.Hehopes the laneswill havemore cyclists

spinning down the streets instead of motor-ists once the southern and eastern commu-nities are linked the city centre. He sees the lanes as preventing many ac-

cidents. “Cyclists will use the green surfacethereby increasing driver awareness andreducing transport conflicts. The clear de-marcation of lanes will help promote thesafety for cyclists sharing the roadwithmo-torists by increasing the visibility of thelane, and the cyclists, for those drivers.”The cycle lanes should not impact on traf-

fic, says Herron, as traffic laneswill remainthe standard size.

Illegal occupants of derelict houseson Pontac and Nelson streets havebeen accused of various criminal ac-tivities, and are now being evicted. However, the residents are dig-ging in their heels and are refusingto leave. They say they have donenothing to deserve being homeless.“We aren’t criminals. We’vefought very hard to chase those peo-ple away,” says Wayne Davids, wholives in one of the rundown build-ings.He says the eviction notice wascompletely unexpected. “I’ve livedhere for four years and don’t knowwhere tomove to. They only gave usa split-second’s notice.”The residents say they have no-where else to go.“I have no idea where to go. Theowner told me I can look after theplace and now they tell me to go,”Gavin Atwood says. The lawyer representing the own-erswas not available to confirm thisclaim.Atwood has lived in one of the der-elict buildings with his partner andtwo sons, aged twoand seven, for thelast four years. An eviction notice served by theowners’ lawyers on Wednesday re-quested they leave the building bythe following Friday. The notice stated that if the occu-piers did not comply, the ownerswould approach the courts for aneviction order. The surrounding community saysthey can’t wait for the illegal occu-pants to be out.

The Woodstock residents haveblamed the illegal occupants for aspate of muggings, car thefts anddrug deals in the area (“Age-oldheadache for Woodstock”, People’sPost, 26 February). The derelict property is alreadypartially demolished, with crum-bling walls and most of the interiordestroyed. Shacks have been erect-ed on the property as well. The houses are believed to bemore than 60 years old and are pro-tected by the National Heritage Re-sources Act.After an application last year,Heritage Western Cape granted per-mission for the buildings to be de-molished, says Garreth Bloor, May-

oral Committee member for Eco-nomic, Environmental and SpatialPlanning. The permission was granted forthe building to be demolished onThursday 20 June, whichwas haltedby the illegal occupants living thereaccording to the eviction notice.A Springfield Terrace resident isoverjoyed at the eviction notice.“It’s good for everyone living in thearea. It’s dangerous to walk downthe street past those buildings.”Roger Street resident Adeeb Wil-son says he has heard of drug deal-ing taking place at the building. In a previous report another resi-dent said she had been robbed whilewalking past the property.

The Western Province under-18 boyshockey coach has hailed RondeboschBoys’ High’s Zubayr Hamza following

his performance at the national under-18boys inter-provincial tournament.

Hamza was instrumental in his side’s 3-1victory over KwaZulu Natal Coastal in thefinal of the tournament, scoring two goalsand helping to set up a third.

Coach Jason Mulder says Hamza contrib-utes more than just goals to the team cause.

“He is a fantastic player. A lot of peoplesee his goals, but he is also a hard worker,he listens and his attitude is fantastic. That’s why he is the top goal-scorer at thetournament,” he says.

“His passion comes throughandhe reallyenjoys doing well. He does everything rightso that he can do well and his discipline isamazing. I think he is a fantastic sports-man.”

WP were unbeaten in the group stage ofthe tournament, thrashing South WesternDistricts 7-0 in their first game, beatingBoland 5-0 in their second game, drawing1-1 against Amathole and ending stronglywith a 4-0 win over the KwaZulu Natal In-land side.

Mulder’s side progressed to the final ofthe tournament thanks to a 3-2 win overEastern Province in the semi-finals.

Province were clear favourites headinginto the final of the competition, but Natalclaimed the ascendancy early in the match– much to the shock of the strong homecrowd.

Thevisitorswere the first to threatenanddrew two saves from WP goalkeeper RobertMcKinley in the fourth minute.

The Wynberg Boys’ stopper was called in-to action again in the 13th minute when heensured KZN didn’t profit from two consec-

utive penalty corners.Province broke the deadlock against the

run of play in the 15th minute, when Hamzastripped opposition defender Jayson Reedand went on to beat KZN keeper JasonOakes

Hamza was heavily involved when WPdoubled their lead in the thirdminute of thesecond half, winning a penalty cornerwhich Tim Welsh scrambled in after a wellworked move.

Natal pulled a goal back just four minuteslater when Stephan McManus tapped in aball played across goal from the left flank.

But Hamza restored Province’s two goallead and put the game to bed just two min-utes later, finishing off a lightning quickcounter-attack with aplomb.

Mulder says the goals were proof his sideexecuted their planned counter-attack tac-tics perfectly.

“The Natal side is structured and they de-fend high up the field. We knew they wouldbe effective, but they are not a very mobileside, so we also knew they would be vulner-able to counter-attacks when they turnoverthe ball,” he says.

“We exploited that with our quick strik-ers getting into the right positions to scorethe goals.”

A total of seven WP players were selectedto the South Africa under-18 side, thanks totheir performances at the tournament.SA under-18 team: Charles Bowren

(EP), Jamie Christians, Ryan Crowe, Quin-ton Dreyer, Zubayr Hamza, Ryan Julius,Robert McKinley, Alex Stewart (WP) Mat-thewdeSousa,NqobileNtuli, RyanWallace(KZN Coastal), Siya Nolotshungu, TysonDlungwana (KZN Inland), ChrisHawkridge (Boland), Savesh Naidoo (Am-athole), Keegan Kieck, Kyle Lion-Cachetand Khumo Mokale (North Gauteng).

After hours of gruelling training ses-sions and six pressurised qualifyingmatches, 16 football teamswill reap the

rewards when they play in the finals of the10th annual Engen Knockout Challenge. The Challenge will pit Cape Town’s best

under-17 footballers against each other in abattle for the prize money, bragging rightsand possibly the chance at a professional ca-reer.People’s Post is the tournament’s printme-

dia sponsor. Many of South Africa’s most celebrated

professional footballers first made a namefor themselves or were scouted at the EngenKnockout.Edries Burton, chief operations manager

at host club Santos FC, urged the currentcrop of players to make the most of their op-portunity and emulate the Engen Knock-out’s most famous products.“As a former player, my challenge to the

young players is that there is an opportunityhere. If you look at Thulani Serero – this iswhere it started for him and look where it’sgoing,” he says.“The stars are the limit for these young

players. Who knows where they can end up?They are young and have the world at theirfeet. They can make a decision to finish fur-ther than Thulani Serero; it’s entirely up tothem.”Over 100 teams started the qualifying

process at the beginning of June and onThursday the 13 teams whomade it throughwere divided into groups along with auto-matic qualifiers Ajax Cape Town, ChippaUnited and Santos FC.Group A contains Pinelands club Old Mu-

at the Stephen Reagan Sports Complex inWestridge, Mitchell’s Plain, but the 2013tournament will be played at William Her-bert Sports Grounds, home of the Cape Dis-trict Local Football Association (CDLFA), inWynberg.Winston Engledoe, president of the CDL-

FA, says the new venue gives participantsa whole new list of stars to look up to.“Since unity we have a produced a few in-

ternational players, namely Mark Wiliams,Gerald Stober, Roger Links and Benni Mc-

Carthy,” he says.“CDLFA and theWilliamHerbertMunici-
