Jody Marz has been commut- ing by train for just over a month from Cape Town to Southfield. He even recently sold his car in fa- vour of commuting by train, which according to him, should have been “less stressful than driving to town every day”. At 20:30 Marz’s “relaxing” train trip turned into his worst nightmare. As Marz got off at his usual stop he was approached by three armed attackers. “I noticed the men in the train, as they were in the same carriage and kept on looking at me, but I just tried to avoid their gaze.” “I remember distinctly how they used a tabloid newspaper with the Mandela celebration headline to jam a broken door in the train, and found it quite fun- ny. When I saw them getting off at the same stop as me I remem- ber thinking I had to walk behind them because they looked quite suspicious.” Recounting the event, Marz says the men looked like they were “on something” and he felt it would be better to keep his dis- tance. Just before the exit at the sta- tion the three men turned around, pointed a gun and told him: “We are going to kill you.” Feeling threatened, Marz re- sponded by fighting back. “I found it very weird that they didn’t ask for valuables, they just told me they were going to kill me. My first instinct was to fight for my life. if they had asked for my phone or any other valuables I would have given it to them without hesitation.” After a brief scuffle and after being pistol whipped on the head, Marz found himself thrown three metres down onto the train tracks. “I must have passed out from landing on the tracks but woke up a couple of seconds later and they were still beating and kicking me.” Marz is still baffled that during the entire incident the men did not once ask him for any of his valuables, even though he was wearing Prada glasses and had more than R800 in cash in his wal- let. He also feels that he was tar- geted because they saw him as a “white stupid idiot” travelling alone that time of the night. After a few minutes of his fran- tic calls for help at the bottom of the train tracks, the men ran away, stealing only his Blackber- ry phone. Bystanders called the police and once the attackers fled an un- known woman screamed at Marz to get off the track in fear of on- coming trains. “I heard her calls, but could not move, That is when i realised that something was seriously wrong. Only then did Metrorail securi- ty arrive on the scene. A couple in a green Nissan Sen- tra passing also heard his cries and stopped to offer help. The fly- ing squad arrived within 15 min- utes and pursued the suspects, but this yielded no results as the three apparently split up to avoid being caught. Marz describes the couple in the Nissan as being his “angels”. “Without them I don’t know what would’ve happened to me.” The couple managed to take Marz to a house where his girl- friend was at the time. His girl- friend phoned an ambulance to take him to hospital, but the am- bulance worker informed her that they would take a few min- utes as they first needed to re- spond to a similar incident at Steenberg Station. She was con- cerned, as Marz is a diabetic and could go into shock or a coma as a lot of blood was pouring from the cut in his head. She then opt- ed to take him to Constantiaberg Hospital herself. Since he started using the train system, Marz has been an advo- cate and promoter of the Metro- rail system that has received a bad reputation over the past years, and says that he had al- ways felt safe up until the inci- dent. “In the beginning I was brag- ging to everybody at how safe the trains were, but now I don’t think I will ever use the train system again, as there is just not enough security on platforms or trains. I will have to buy a car again in or- der for me to get to work because the train system has failed me.” Kevin Southgate, Steenberg Community Police Forum chair- person, says: “It is an ongoing battle for commuters who travel by train. There has to be stricter security enforcement at stations. This incident is an indication that these commuters are being targeted.” “If Metrorail wants to encour- age commuters to continue trav- elling by train, they have to make it safer for them.” Metrorail has been unavailable for comment since Thursday 21 July. Marz wants Metrorail to be held responsible for what hap- pened, but has also had no suc- cess in getting hold of Metrorail officials since the incident. Marz feels that his incident was just re- corded for statistical purposes by Metrorail security officials and nothing more will be done about it. But Marz is adamant that he will not allow Metrorail, or his at- tackers to get away with what they have done, and will fight to get a resolution. Constable Diedre Solomon, spokesperson for the Kirstenhof Police Station, confirmed that a case of armed robbery had been opened. Marz says he is extremely grateful for the assistance he got, but would like the people who as- sisted him to come forward so he can thank them and also for them to become possible witnesses in the case that has been opened. ART OF BELLY DANCING: The Feminine Divine Annual Studio Show at Bergvli- et High School on Saturday drew 850 people with hypnotic belly-wiggling and mesmerising costumes. About 70 dancers, such as Aniqah Hill pictured, shimmied to the sensual rhythms of the Middle East and transported the audience to a time of splendour and beauty. The studio’s owner, Tenille Lind- eque, says she is “absolutely delighted” with her students’ performance. Photo: Andre Bakkes

Local is proudly lekkerAS PART of the 93 000 Jobs for MandelaDay Campaign, Proudly South African(Proudly SA) will host South Africa’s firstBuy Local Indaba and Expo, focusing on lo-cal procurement at the Sandton Conven-tion Centre on Thursday 29 and Friday 30September.

The theme of the Indaba is “Be ProudlySouth African - Buy Local to Create Jobs”which is the key message of Proudly SouthAfrica’s marketing and communicationcampaign. The Expo will showcase Proud-ly South African member companies’ serv-ice offerings and manufactured productsavailable from all sectors of business inSouth Africa, and aims to create a networkthat can link all state organs and corporatebusiness to local suppliers.

According to Dalene du Preez, executivemanager of marketing and communica-tions at Proudly South African, for the con-sumer, attending the Indaba will makethem aware of local brands that they cansupport in the marketplace and what op-portunities “are out there” for local entre-preneurs.

It’s also a great way for the youth and em-ployees to engage new company networksin a relaxed and non-pressurised environ-ment.

The two-day Buy Local Indaba includespresentations and talks on local procure-ment, local manufacturing and job crea-tion opportunities, with a special focus onthepriority sectors as identifiedbygovern-ment.

These presentations will take place from09:00 to 16:00 and are open to corporates ina conference seating setting. Attendance at

the Buy Local Indaba presentations is free, but pre-registration is required. The cen-trepiece of the two-day event will be thehosting of the prestigious Proudly SAHomegrown Awards, which are sponsoredby PetroSA, South Africa’s national oilcompany.

The awards will see Proudly SA membercompanies recognised and rewarded fortheir commitment to job-creation, environ-mental responsibility, fair labour practic-es and the production of high-quality goodsor services.

Kaizer Nyatsumba, PetroSA’s head ofcorporate affairs and communications, says the state-owned firm’s sponsorship ofthe Homegrown Awards is necessitated bya need to develop local companies that cancompete with the best in the world.

“At PetroSA we view the development oflocal suppliers as critical to our own suc-cess. We often are compelled to utilise theservices of foreign firms due to the non-availability of suitably-qualified South Af-rican companies. Supporting the Homeg-rown Awards ensures we assist in develop-ing and recognising local expertise,” hesays. The Proudly SA Homegrown Awardswill takeplace on 29September at theSand-ton Convention Centre.

And for the first time the HomegrownAwards are going to be a public interactiveprocess. Consumers can vote for their fa-vourite Proudly South African companythrough the following websites:www.proudlysa.co.za; www.face-book.com/proudlysa and www.twit-ter.com/proudlysa. Herbalistconned me’TAMMY PETERSEN

EVERYONE has received the pam-phlets promising the releasing of evil

spirits, luck with the Lotto and even an in-crease inpenis sizeafteroneconsultation.

But a Gatesville man warns people to bewary of the bone-throwing, spirit-calling“doctors”, who he says “prey on the desper-ate”.

After years of struggling with infertility, the man – who wants to be known only as Bur-han – says he decided to turn to herbalistswhen there was little medical doctors andspecialists could do for him.

“I am a very religious man and I believethat faith is a powerful. I saw an advert in anewspaper and phoned the number, makingan appointment to see the woman at her Ath-lone office.”

Burhan then borrowed R500 from a friendto pay for the consultation.

“I was desperate but hopeful that this wom-an would be able to solve my problem withfaith healing. When I got there, she asked memany questions about my life and my family. She then gave me a bitter herbal mixture todrink, as well as some to take home.

“She told me that in order for her tradition-al solution to work, I had to drink the mixturethat night, as well as the next morning beforeI returned. I also had to take a shower, where-after I had to rinse myself in a bucket of theherbal water and catch enough to fill a one-li-tre bottle.”

At their consultation the next day, she tookthe water and put it in a pot, bringing it toa boil.

“We were sitting in a badly-lit room and shewas watching the pot boil. She started callingto her ancestors and out of nowhere this voicecomes, telling me that he was her grandfatherand that he was going to help me with myproblem.

“The voice told me I was cursed and thatsomeone had put a black magic spell on me.I believed everything this woman was saying– I was mesmerised.”

But he started to smell a rat when the voice

told him that he should go to relatives andpeople he knew to collect money for theherbalist.

“I knew then that they were trying to conme. I left shortly thereafter, because theywere trying to extort money from me, some-one who was crying for help. How many peo-ple had actually given them the money outof sheer desperation?”

Burhan says this is not the first time hehas visited a herbalist.

“On two other occasions, I went to seethese traditional healers, and they too triedto get more money out of me to buy thingslike goats to slaughter. These people are conartists who are allowed to advertise theirfraudulent activities to all and sundry.”

But Dr Kizza, who says she has been oper-ating in Athlone for over six years, says shenever told Burhan to bring her more money.

“I told him to come back for more treat-ment, but he didn’t,” she says.

The Ugandan herbalist says she has eightyears’ experience and that she receives“many customers”.

When asked why she charges R500 whenother herbalists charge R100, she answeredthat she gives “proper treatment”.

“They don’t get what they need with theother doctors, that’s why they come to me.I also have to import medicine from outsidethe country, and this costs money.”

She further pointed out that she has beenquite successful in the Athlone area, “whichis why [she] has been [there] for six years”.

“I provide good service. This man is tell-ing lies. He is trying to spoil my name.”

Warrant Officer Ian Bennett, the spokes-person for Athlone police, says he is awareof the incident.

“However, legally, no crime was commit-ted. The man willingly handed over themoney for a service. People should be warywhen it comes to these types of healers.Rather go to a qualified doctor for help andtreatment.”

He recalls an incident reported earlierthis year where a woman, who had just re-tired, took her entire pension payout to atraditional healer “so that he could pray

over it”. “He is still praying today. Peopleshouldn’t be greedy and gullible. There is alsoa misconception that it’s only black people whovisit these healers. However, many colouredsalso visit these ‘doctors’. There are so many ofthem because there is a market for it.”

Phepsile Maseko, the national coordinatorfor the Traditional Healers’ Organisation, sayshealing is based on the foundation of ubuntuand that “exorbitant fees” do not form part ofthe ethical code for traditional healing.

“A healer should in no way request a clientto collect money on their behalf. In terms of ourcode, healers should advise on sustainablehealing practices, and give proper herbal treat-ment to customers. The behaviour described isin total contrast towhatwe stand for,” she says.

Masekoexplains thatmosthealers chargebe-tween R50 and R100 for a consultation, and iftreatment is required, the herbs can cost up toR400.

“A deposit can be requested, whereafter theremaining fees can be paid once the personhas been treated fully. If anyone wants tocheck whether the healer they are consider-ing is registered with us, they can phone theCape Town coordinator, John Ngxowa, on082 216 3408.”

Marella O’Reilly, the acting CEO and regis-trar of the Health Professions Council ofSouth Africa, says that no traditional healersare registered with the association.

“It’s very important that patients make useof reputable practices, and if you are in doubtas to whether the person is legitimate, youcan phone the HPCSA for confirmation,” shesays.

A spiritual approach to life and youthLILLIAN AMOS

TWENTY-FIVE youngsters fromthe Christian Youth Movement(CYM), of the United ReformedChurch in Steenberg, along withsome from the African MethodistEpiscopal (AME) church in Re-treat, faced the cold and embarkedon a youth camp at Gordon’sCampsite in Glencairn.

Wendy Spannenberg, youth leaderof the CYM, says the main aim of thecamp was to get young people to getin touch with their spiritual side andto teach them life skills.

“Youngsters have to deal with a lotof emotional conflicts, and they havea lot of issues to deal with, such aspeer pressure and drugs.

“Most of the time, they do not knowhow to deal with these issues. Thiscamp was to help give them guide-lines on how to deal with their prob-lems on a spiritual level.

“It was also to show them that youcan have fun without doing thingsthat would have a negative impact onthem.”

Jamie-Lee Davids, a CYM member, says she has learnt a lot.

“I really enjoyed it and I think Ihave grown spiritually. The thingsthey taught us at the camp will reallycome in handy for our everydaylives.”

The camp was facilitated by BruceAdams, from New World Founda-tion, with the help of Nashwin Dirks.

Spannenberg, along with the otheryouth executives, is appealing toyoung people to go to their churchesfor spiritual guidance.

“Youngsters do not want to go tochurch any more because they thinkit’s ‘un-cool’, but the church is a goodplace to get the help you need.”

The CYM Steenberg and the AMEchurch in Retreat thanked everyonewho was involved and who donatedto make the camp possible.

“It makes us feel good to helpthese people.”

Senior pastor, LawrenceJantjies, says: “People sit at thisday hospital for hours, and manytimes they don’t have somethingto eat, so they are starving.

“We thought it would be nice tooffer them something. We alsoask them if they need anyprayers, andmost of the time they

accept the prayer. We do counsel-ling to try and help them dealwith certain problems they maybe facing.” The funding for thescheme comes from the congrega-tion. “Sometimes people are soscared to lose their seats at theday hospital that they don’t wantto come over, so we also go to thehospital to give them the food,”says Jantjies. Ticket fining system ‘humiliating’ANDRE BAKKES

METRORAIL commuterscontinue to board trains

without valid tickets despitethe deterrent of facing a fine ofR40, and, even worse, beingheld in a room likened to a jailcell.

Two commuters, Lee-Ann Belland Bradley Solomons, reportedtheir “harrowing” experience toPeople’s Post on 14 July, when theywere held in two tiny roomscrammed with people after beingcaught in first class without tick-ets.

It was one of the rare occasionsthat Bell took the train, but shesays she had an important inter-view that she couldn’t miss.

The trains were delayed thatday, so the platform at Retreat sta-tion was packed with impatientcommuters. Bell and Solomons re-alised that the only way they couldreach their destination in timewas toboarda first class coachandswap over to third class a few sta-tions later.

“Many others were getting intofirst class as well,” says the angrySolomons.

“We went from Retreat to Heath-field to Diep River, and when wecame to Plumstead, 30 or 40 peoplewere pulled out of the carriage.”

According to the two, the inspec-tors who were waiting at Plum-stead Station were excessivelyforceful during the removal.

They were split up, with Belltaken to a room at the station withabout 40 women inside alreadyand Solomons to a room with 90men squeezed in.

“I was told that I’ll be kept in the

room until I pay the fine of R40,”says Bell.

Solomons adds: “There was asick man in our room who had togo to hospital, but they wouldn’trelease him.

Another man had to go to the pa-role office, and if he wasn’t thereon time he said he could even goto jail again.”

After two hours, Bell and Solo-mons were finally released aftersomeone they know paid the fines.

Lindelo Matya, regional manag-er of Metrorail, responds: “Ourstance is compliant with policyand law.

Travelling without a valid ticketor in the incorrect travelling classfor the ticket purchased unfortu-nately is a criminal offence interms of the Legal Succession Act,Act 9 of 1989.

We are inundated with com-plaints from fare-paying MetroPlus customers who complainabout the invasion of their coach-es.

It remains a challenge to ensurea balance between demand and ca-pacity in both travelling classes.

With current resources at ourdisposal, the most effective way todeal with the matter is throughspecial actions. These compriserandom actions on trains and atstations with space to processcommuters.”

Those found to be in contraven-tion of the law are required to waitin the station’s “processing area”until they have been “processed”.Matya continues: “Hundreds ofcommuters are removed fromtrains each month during Metro-rail’s fare recovery actions.

The cost of non-compliance canbe high, as scores end up being

prosecuted as a result. Some 185 offenders are prose-

cuted every month for rail-re-lated offences.” She says, how-ever, that customers must bedealt with courteously and pro-fessionally.

If not, Metrorail encouragescustomers to report unprofes-sional behaviour to the stationmanager immediately to ena-ble him or her to take action.”

Bell and Solomons’ story isjust one of several almost iden-tical experiences other com-muters have had and told Peo-ple’s Post about.

Malcolm Bates wrote a letterto People’s Post at the begin-ning of this year in which hesaid: “There was a time whenyou knew that you could, in anemergency, purchase yourticket on the train and admit-tedly pay a booking fee.

Herding defaulters acrosstracks at a busy station is hu-miliating, dangerous and un-professional in the extreme.”

Metrorail’s Riana Scott re-plied at the time: “Unfortunate-ly, overcrowding places a bur-den on aged infrastructure. This means that we may con-tinue to have trains breakdown on occasions and contin-ue to suffer random/unantici-pated delays due to a myriadreasons, from mechanical de-fects, track conditions andoverhead/signal wiring, to ex-treme weather conditions.

“All this is as a result of yearsof under-investment in passen-ger rail services which PRASA,through its operator Metrorail,is planning to rectify over thenext five years.”

Cape Town is ‘drug capital of South Africa’HANRIE BOSCH

THE drug problem in the Western Cape ison the brink of becoming a national crisis, according to Yusuf Abramjee, head of theanonymous tip-off centre, Crime Line.

Abramjee says the Western Cape has be-come known as the “drug capital of South Af-rica” and the situation has been reaching“alarming proportions”.

Abramjee was speaking at Crime Line’sfourth birthday celebration at MandelaRhodes Place in Cape Town on Thursday 21July.

Crime Line came about four years ago asan independentCapeTalkandPrimedia initi-ative, and is endorsed by the South AfricanPolice Service.

Crime Line aims to empower communitiesand individuals to combat crime by provid-ing them with an anonymous way of SMSingtheir detailed crime tip-offs about crimes and

suspicious activities in their neigbourhoods.Provincial police commissioner, Lieuten-

ant General Arno Lamoer, said that since Oc-tober last year R7,9 billion’s worth of drugshave been confiscated in the Western Capealone, thanks to anonymous tip-offs fromcommunity members.

“It is scary, as this is just the tip of the ice-berg, and this is the first time that these fig-ures are being made public.”

According to Tertius Cronje, from theSouth African National Council on Alcohol-ism and Drug Dependence (SANCA), theWestern Cape has seen a sharp increase indrug abuse amongst teenagers between theages of 14 to 17, as the figures have gone upfrom 19% in 2005 to 24% in 2011.

‘There is also an alarming reduction in theage of first-time users. It used to be 14 years, but now it has dropped to nine years.”

“Onanational level, theWesternCapecom-pares very unfavourably, as we have a 31%admission rate to rehabilitation facilities for

tik, whilst the national average is just 6%.”Hanif Loonat, from the Community Polic-

ing Board, said that “70% of crime commit-ted in the Western Cape comes from sub-stance abuse”.

Abramjee also added that most of the tip-offs received via Crime Line were drug-re-lated.

“We have even had situations where par-ents have sent in tip-offs about their ownchildren using or selling drugs.”

Abramjee appealed to the community toattack the “rampant drug problem with vig-our”.

“In our communities we all know whomurders, steals, rapes and sells drugs, andit is up to us to stop them.” Lamoer also add-ed that police were making progress, butmuch more work was needed. “We have tostrengthen the partnership between ourcommunities and the police. We are busylosing our freedom in this country. We arelosing it to a minority group … criminals.”

Loonat also said that there was not enoughparticipation from the community on the lev-els available to them, such as Crime Line, community policing forums and neighbour-hood watches.

As part of Crime Line and the South Afri-can Police Service’s fight against drugs, morethan 800kg of dagga and hundreds of litres ofconfiscated alcohol to the value of R125 000were destroyed on Thursday 21 July outsideDelft.

In the past four years since Crime Line’sinception, more than 1 100 arrests have beenmade and more than R40 million’s worth ofseizures have taken place.

Abramjee also agreed that despite CrimeLine’s numerous successes, they still had along way to go. “There are three key aspectsthat we need to look at: We need to encouragecommunities to blow the whistle, we need tostrengthen our partnerships between com-

munities and police, and we need to put ourmoney where our mouth is.”

On the streets of Cape Town, however, itseems as though Crime Line has a long wayto go, as most residents are oblivious to exist-ence.

According to one resident, Chwayita Me-tele, more people need to be made aware ofCrime Line.

“They need more marketing and radio andTV ads in order for people to know about it.It does help people, but most people just shutup about crime and do not even talk about it.”Michael Hayes works for a cash-in-transitcompany and feels that this sort of anony-mous crime tip-off line is good thing, especial-ly for his industry, which is often targeted bycriminals. “It is a good thing for us, andmakes it safer if people send in tip-offs.” SMSyour anonymous tip-offs to 32211.

Road problems continue in RetreatTAURIQ HASSEN

AVAILABLE funding from council al-lowed for parts of the problematic

Consort Road in Retreat to be resurfaced, but residents feel the whole road needs at-tention.

Ward Councillor Jan Burger confirmedthat parts of the road had been repaired withfunding left over from last year’s financialbudget.

“We started repairing the less expensiveparts of the road, and we plan to finish offwith the major work that needs to be done,”says Burger.

In an article on 31 May, “Long-term solution need-ed”, People’s Post reported on the many prob-

lems residents say they are faced with whentravelling on Consort Road.

Consort Road runs from 1st Avenue in Re-treat up to 11th Avenue, and then curves upto Retreat Road. Along Consort Road, thereare several avenues running through the Re-treat community, all leading back to RetreatRoad.

Burger highlighted that the problem withfixing the rest of the road are the “moles” thatare creating indentations in the road.

“We need to source the money to have molefencing put in place, and then we can focuson fixing up the rest of that road,” says Burg-er.

Residents are concerned about indenta-tions and unevenness of the road and the factthat it is “extremely narrow”.

Kevin Southgate, chairperson of the Steen-berg Community Police Forum, was happy tohear that funding had been made availablefor parts of Consort Road, but believes thewhole road needs “urgent attention”.

The upgrade included the resurfacing ofcertain parts, as well as evening out the road.

“Although we welcomed the upgrade, I can-not understand why the whole of ConsortRoad cannot be resurfaced all at once, be-cause there is a high volume of traffic usingthis road,” says Southgate.

He confirmed that the proposed upgrade toConsort Road came after “30 years of con-cern” and several requests and complaintslodged with the City of Cape Town.

Southgate said “unevenness, potholes, patchwork and regular flooding” are amongresidents’ concerns.

“Surely additional funding can be sourcedfrom other budget votes where under-spend-ing has occurred? So it does not make finan-cial sense that a new tender would have to beput out to resurface the remainder of ConsortRoad, which will include having to bringback all the heavy machinery involved withsuch an operation,” Southgate explained.

However, the machines had been movedand parts of Consort Road, from 1st Avenueto 4th Avenue, have already been restored.

Burger was aware of the concerns aboutConsort Road, but still maintained that “dam-ages continue to return to the road” due tothe moles causing indentations.

During last year, a proposal wasput in motion by Burger at theRondevlei Subcouncil to have abridge constructed from the exten-sion of Ladies Mile into First Ave-nue in Retreat, which could be a“long-term solution”.

“This bridge would help ease the traffic onthe road, making it less prone to damages andit would also make a lot more sense thanbuilding along another road in the area,”Burger said.

However, Burger is still awaiting feedbackfrom council on the proposed plan for thebridge.

Residents continue to believe that the roadis a complete “nightmare” and want some-thing to be done about the problem.

Faghmie Schroeder, a resident living onConsort Road, has no alternative but to usethe “dilapidated” road.

“I can’t understand how the council cannotsee there is a problem here and now theywant to fix a part of the road, but this wholeroad is a problem,” says Schroeder.

He explained that even though they are ca-pable of fixing a part of the road, it would bean “eyesore” having part of the road fixed.

“Just imagine seeing one half new and theother half destroyed, then we must now behappy with that,” Schroeder explained.

Another resident in the area, Lisa Martins, added that not only does the state of the roadfrustrate many road users, but the conditioncan have bad effects on their cars.

“The number of potholes on that road cancertainly not be good for your car, but thoseare concerns we have been lodging for yearswith the City,” says Martins.

Lavender Hill’s fine finalistLILLIAN AMOS

LUCINDA EVANS, from Lavender Hill, has made her community proud by be-coming a finalist in the Shoprite Womanof the Year competition.

In the end, a Gauteng woman, Dr NobsMwanda, walked away with the “LifetimeAchievement Award”. Although Evans didnot get the top prize, she is still a winner inthe hearts of those she helps every day.

The competition was held at EmperorsPalace in Kempton Park, Johannesburg onSaturday. Evans was a finalist in the “GoodNeighbours against Crime” category for hercontributions as founder and director of thedevelopment programme, Philisa AbafaziBethu, which means “Heal Our Women”.

The programme supports women and chil-dren who are victims of sexual and domesticviolence in the greater Lavender Hill area.

Evans tells People’s Post of an 11-month-old baby boy found in a shack in MontagueVillage, a neighbouring area, brought to herjust the night before.

She didn’t hesitate to take the child intoher care.

The following morning the infant had tobe taken to a hospital for a check-up becausehe had minor bruises. This is just an exam-ple of what Evans does in her community ona daily basis.

Evans, who was born in District Six, start-ed the project in 2008 and it has been goingstrong ever since. The initiative has no fi-nancial support from the government, sothey rely heavily on donations and gifts.

It’s not the first time this Lavender Hillwoman is doing such admirable work. In thepast she has worked with the South AfricanRed Cross Society, Rape Crisis and more.

Cape Town is also not the only provinceshe extends her help to; she has worked inKwazulu-Natal as well as the Eastern Cape.

Some of the projects or activities runningfrom her Hillary Drive house is an after-

school programme for girls, an elderly sup-port group, care programmes, computerclasses, women support groups, camps forgirls, a safe house and plenty more.

The house is buzzing with life as volun-teers, helpers and workshops are on the go.In one wendy house, elderly women sitaround a table making bead accessories fortheir beading workshop held every Thurs-day.

Another structure painted with colourfulanimated characters stands ready to receiveany children or women in need of a place tostay for the night. The shelter is availableto women and children for a period of 72hours.

Evans’ husband, Franklin, and other vol-unteers nominated her for the competition.Eleanor Lonsdale, one of the internationalvolunteers, says: “I can’t think of anyoneelse who deserves it more than her. I’ve nev-er met someone with so much passion. Allshe wants to do is help her community.”

Mable Martin, from the senior groupworkshop, says: “We are very proud of herbecause she is a wonderful person and shedeserves being in the finals. I really do hopeshe wins the competition.”

Asking the mother-of-two what her reac-tion was, she says smiling: “The first timethey (the competition organisers) called meto tell me I’m a finalist I thought it was ahoax.

“Then when they called me again to makearrangements I was totally taken aback. ButI am glad that I am being acknowledged.

“This community is extremely close to myheart so it is an honour to be a finalist.”

When asked how she balances her dailywork at Philisa with her family time, as shehas an 11-year-old daughter and a seven-year-old son, she says: “From 09:00 till 17:00it’s all about Philisa, but from 17:30 it’s aboutthe Evans family.”

Evans thanked all the volunteers and com-munity members who help out at the PhilisaAbafazi Bethu house, as well as her family.
