Manual twisted her ankle in Re- treat Road last month after stepping into a hole created after guttering was stolen. “I just twisted my ankle, which was not that bad, but you can imag- ine what would happen if someone steps into a hole where the drain cover has been removed. That can cause so much more damage,” Man- ual says. Faseeg Efendi, a resident living in Cafda Village, has never wit- nessed the covers being stolen, but has heard of the covers being cut up and sold to scrap dealers. He said many of the covers would be cut up into tiny pieces, making it difficult for them to be identified by police or the council. “You can make some money out of these covers, because they are heavy. At the scrapyard they weigh in all your items and then pay you according to the weight,” says Efen- di. Myrna Richards, owner of a clothing store in Retreat Road, no- ticed that two covers were stolen from in front of her business last week. She now has pools of water developing in front of her shop, which she says is “unnecessary and extremely “inconsiderate”. “The culprits must know that they now cause us problems in or- der to make their money, and it makes our area look extremely bad,” says Richards. Richards did not see the gutters being removed, but says they also went missing in the night. A frustrated ward councillor, Jan Burger, confirmed that a number of locations around the Retreat area had covers missing. “Retreat is slowly but surely be- ing stripped and carried away by vandalism and theft, with residents now becoming accepting. They con- tinue to allow this to become a norm of life,” says Burger. “In order to take the iron strips out, these culprits needed the time and equipment, so surely someone or other must have seen some- thing,” says Burger. Colonel Noel Joseph, station com- mander for the Steenberg Police Station, is aware of the concerns, and confirmed that the station also received complaints from the com- munity. However, Joseph felt that the ex- tent of the problem, “was not as bad as in other areas”. I still posed a problem for the community, though. “Removing these covers is not just against the law, but it also introduces safety concerns for the community,” says Joseph. He added that anybody caught in the act or found with drain covers in their possession would be arrested and charged with theft or possession of stolen proper- ty. “When we come across a case like this, council (as the owner of the covers) is contacted, and they are requested to visit the station in order to lay a formal charge against the suspect,” says Joseph. If anybody is able to provide in- formation on stolen covers or wit- nessed covers being stolen, contact the station and ask to speak to ei- ther Warrant Officer John Bartlett, or Captain Gavin Sheldon, on (021) 702-9000. Accounts of slavery in Diep RiverDR FRANCOIS CLEOPHAS

NOT all slaves were removed from doingbusiness and the historian, JS Marais, quotes the Fiscal as reporting in 1830that “slaves made as much as five to 15sterling pounds per annum by cultivat-ing potatoes, pumpkins, melons, beans, peas and Indian corn”.

Some freed slaves or free born “blacks”even owned slaves themselves.

In 1801, a manumitted slave, Christina ofthe Cape, became the common-law wife ofanother ex-slave, Tobias – a tailor in ChurchStreet, Cape Town.

Seven years later, Tobias, applied for per-mission to cultivate a small piece of vacantland at Diep River.

A quitrent lease was approved. Tobiashad his little farm surveyed, and began toerect buildings on his land while continu-ing to work in Cape Town.

The nearest people bordering on the piece

of vacant land were the “free blacks,” Abra-ham and Frederick, both from the Cape.

In July 1809, Tobias and his assistant Jo-hannes Jepsen (another emancipatedslave), were arrested and charged withfraud. Both were sentenced to Robben Is-land – Tobias for 25 years and Jepsen for 10– without wages.

Christina forwarded unsuccessful peti-tions to the colonial authorities at the time.Tobias and Christina could not fulfil theirdream of becoming peasant farmers ontheir own piece of land in Diep River.

Round about the same time, in October1808, Louis of Mauritius, organised and leda revolt in the grain growing areas, northof Cape Town. His choice of Malmesburywas influenced by an acquaintance, Jan ofBatavia.

Louis was a slave and married to a “freeblack woman”, Anna, who also owned aslave, “Oude” Baatjoe. Urban owners whohad “surplus slaves” allowed them to workaway from home for a fixed fee. In this man-

ner Baatjoe worked forthe “free black” couple,Frederick and BetjeArendse in Diep River.

Louis, living in CapeTown at the time, be-friended an Irishman,James Hooper, whospoke about a slave freesociety in Ireland. Louisplanned a slave uprising, starting in Malmesburyand ending in CapeTown, with him as gover-nor and Hooper holdinghigh office in the new ad-ministration.

The revolt failed. Louisescaped to Diep River, where he spent the week-end with Frederick andBetje Arendse. WhenFrederick heard rumours about Louis’ rolein the recent uprising, he sent a secret mes-

sage to Field Cornet Co-lyn, but Louis slippedaway and was eventuallyarrested by a detachmentof Khoi soldiers in a winehouse in Wynberg.

Student kidnapped,dumped in bushesTAMMY PETERSEN

AKENILWORTH student was kid-napped, robbed and dumped in the

bushes at Schaapkraal when four robbersfound him pushing his car in RacecourseRoad, Kenwyn, after he ran out of petrolin the early hours of Sunday morning.

The 27-year-old, who was on his way homefrom his fiancée’s house in Lansdowne, toldpolice that a dark-coloured Opel Ka-dette pulled up next to him at about01:00 as he pushed his blue ToyotaConquest towards a nearby garage.

Warrant Officer Robert Lakey, spokesperson for Lansdowne po-lice, says two men got out of the carand approached the student. “Oneof the men pulled out a gun and theygrabbed the student, forcing himinto the Kadette.

“As he got in, another man gotout and went to stand at the stu-dent’s car. The suspects, the twomen as well as a woman who waswaiting in the car, then drove off, taking the M5 to Ottery.”

As they drove, the robbers de-manded the man’s bank card andPIN number.

“He complied and the robberstook him to the ATM at the cornerof De Wet and Ottery roads, wherethey withdrew R2 600. They thengot back in the car and started driv-ing towards Philippi,” he explains.

As they drove, the armed robber instructedhim to remove the laces from his shoes, where-after his assailants tied his hands and feet.

“They drove to Schaapkraal, where theydumped him in the bushes. Before leaving, they asked him whether his car was fitted withan anti-hijacking device and when he said thatit wasn’t, they threatened to come back andkill him if he was lying. They then left himthere.”

The man, stumbling through the darkness, managed to find a sharp stone which he usedto cut the laces and free himself.

“He ran to anearbygaragewherehe contact-ed his family, who came to fetch him. Whenthey returned to where the incident started, the car was already gone,” Lakey explains.

The man sustained no injuries.Hanif Loonat, the chairperson of the Ken-

wyn Safety and Security Association, says itis the first time in two years that such an inci-dent happened at the “usually quiet part ofRacecourse Road”.

“This section of the road is usually crime-free and what happened can only be describedas very unfortunate.

“People should realise that no matter whereyou are, you have to make every effort to en-

sure that you are not makingyourself susceptible to opportun-istic crooks. It can happen at anytime, in any place.”

He says the local neighbour-hood watch, which has been dor-mant for a year, is gaining mo-mentum for a relaunch.

“We need patrols from localswho are concerned with protect-ing their area.

“Structures like these are usu-ally a strong deterrent to crimi-nals, as their presence make itdifficult for chancers to strike.”

Majidie Abrahams, the chair-person of the Lansdowne Com-munity Police Forum, describesthe incident as “surprising”, andreiterates that the Kenwyn sec-tion of Racecourse Road is “usu-ally quiet”.

“This man seems to have beenspotted by criminals passingthrough the area who decided to

take a chance.“However, the main thing that should come

from this is that if you are stranded, phonesomeone or go somewhere safe.

“Thieves prey on the vulnerable, so insteadof putting yourself in a dangerous situation, phone the authorities and explain your situa-tion. A sector vehicle should be at hand to helpor wait with you until assistance arrives.”

No arrests have been made. Anyone with in-formation about the incident is asked to phonethe station on (021) 700-9000.

Police still baffled by bodyTAURIQ HASSEN

POLICE are appealing to the pub-lic for help after a burnt body wasfound along the M5 highway lastweek.

The charred body of a manthought to be about 30 years oldwas found in the bushes at theKromboom Road and Racecourseturn-off at 06:00 on Tuesday 29March.

The media reported last weekthat the body was found along thesame road where actor Brett Gol-din and fashion designer, Rich-

ard Bloom, were shot executionstyle.

InApril 2006,GoldinandBloomwere found naked alongside theM5 with their hands tied behindtheir back and bullet wounds totheir heads. However, theLansdowne police have notlinked the two cases.

The charred body had appar-ently been tied to tyres withchains before being set alight.

According to Warrant OfficerRobert Lakey, spokesperson forthe Lansdowne Police Station, the body was burnt beyond recog-

nition, and police struggled to liftfinger or toe prints in order toidentify the man.

“The unidentified body of theman was found with a chainaround his right arm and rightleg in the bushes, near a tree,”says Lackey.

Police attempted to identify thebody by sending out an internalmemorandum requesting infor-mation from their offices of miss-ing people. On the morning of theincident, a traffic official wasdriving down the M5 towards Mu-izenberg when he spotted a cloud

of black smoke coming from thebushy areas alongside the free-way. The official immediatelycontacted fire and rescue servic-es, which attended to the fire andfound the body.

“The investigation is currentlyunder way and police haveopened a case of murder, whichwe require more informationabout,” says Lakey.

Anyone able to shed light onthe incident is requested to con-tact the Lansdowne Police Sta-tion on (021) 700-9000 or CrimeStop on 086 001 0111.

The project is linked to the city’s In-ner City World Cup Non-MotorisedTransport Project, which includes im-provements to pedestrian footways.

Some of the existing concrete pav-ing bricks, which were laid around1970, have been lifted by tree roots, while in other areas depressions haveoccurred.

At the same time some of the otherpaved areas will be renewed with claybricks and cobbles, such as the Parlia-ment gates, the main gate to the Com-pany’s Garden, the Tuynhuis gate, theRose Garden entrance gate and othersmaller entrances along the avenue.

The damaged edges of GovernmentAvenue will also be restored usingoriginal, historic, granite cobbles tak-en from the Lower Loop Street area, where roadworks are taking place.

New benches will replace the oldconcrete and wooden-slate benches onthe upper portion of Government Ave-nue.

To complement this project, a water-saving initiative has been institutedby the City’s water and sanitation de-partment in the Company’s Garden. Itentails piping Table Mountain springwater, which yields 2,5 million litresof water a day in summer.

This watering system has been laidfrom the main springs at HomesteadPark, down Upper Orange Street, along Government Avenue, QueenVictoria Street and Somerset Road tothe Cape Town Stadium and the UrbanPark as well.

This water is also being used alongthe way for the irrigation of De WaalPark and The Paddocks area of theCompany’s Garden.

The Garden’s much-loved aviarywill not be snubbed during the up-grade.

New birds will be introduced whenthe renovations are complete, andthese will reflect, as much as possible, the local bird population.

The existing building was built inthe 1930s, and has been retained aspart of the heritage of the Company’sGarden.

The interior has been completely re-newed and opened up, and new waterfeatures and a passageway rightthrough the aviary have been built.

The enclosing mesh has also beenrenewed with high-quality fencing, which allows good visibility.

Once the refurbishments of Govern-ment Avenue are complete, the parksdepartment plans to revive the once-popular summer “Art in the Avenue”programme, and will examine the fea-sibility of the establishment of a regu-lar fresh produce market in The Pad-docks.

This relates to the origins of theCompany’s Garden, once a vegetablefarm for the Dutch settlers and theCastle.

A FRESH LOOK: Government Avenuewill undergo an upgrade and restoration.

Driver arrested forassault on cyclistTERESA FISCHER

AMOTORIST was arrested for as-saulting cyclist Andrew Wheel-

don on the same day Wheeldon re-ported the incident and has sincebeen released without having to paybail.

The incident in which Wheeldon wasallegedly punched in the jaw by an iratemotorists took place at noon on Sunday27 March near Claremont. ClaremontPolice arrested the man who lives inRosmead Avenue on charges of assaulton Monday 28 March.

He appeared in court and was re-leased without having to pay bail andwill, however, appear in the WynbergMagistrate’s Court on Thursday 14April.

Wheeldon, the director of the BicycleEmpowerment Network (BEN), was cy-cling towards the corner of RosmeadAvenue and Lansdowne Road, when hesays the motorist jumped a stop street.Wheeldon says he just shook his head.He says the driver then suddenlybraked and reversed and as he passedthe car, the driver almost hit him bysuddenly opening his car door. Thishappened three times he says, addingthat he would simply ride around thecar.

Then, as he was stopped at a robot atthe Rosmead and Lansdowne Road in-tersection, the driver got out and ap-proached him, asking: “Do you thinkyou are a hero?” He replied “no”.

The man then asked: “Why did youshake your head?” Wheeldon repliedthis was because the driver had jumpedthe stop street.

“So you think you are a hero then?”the driver allegedly asked beforepunching him in the jaw.

He then asked: “So what are you go-ing to do, hero?” Wheeldon replied thathe was going to report him for assaultand the man said he would go with himto the police station.

He followed Wheeldon closely, andthis was captured in photographs takenby a witness, who holds a senior posi-tion at a large media house. “He reallypicked the wrong guy to hit,” saysWheeldon wryly. One of the missions ofThe Bicycle Empowerment Network isto advocate safe bicycle travel.

The man then drove away.Another witness has since ap-

proached Wheeldon, saying she saw theman punch him. She told him that shewas amazed he didn’t even lift an armto defend himself, even to protect him-self. Wheeldon says the day before hehad cycled over 400 km and was justhoping to do an easy 10 km. He says itwas partly a case of turning the othercheek, but adds, “I didn’t have the ener-gy”. Wheeldon says it was good if the“cyclist/motorist problem” wasbrought into the public sphere, addingthat it had been kept under wraps fortoo long. He pleads for tolerance fromboth sides. He highlights the impor-tance of educating drivers and cyclists.

He says incidents can easily escalateinto a full-blown fight. He adds: “Fight-ing back, by for example slapping some-one’s car, is the wrong reaction.”

He suggests stopping confrontationimmediately by down-playing whatev-er has happened as much as possibleand moving away. If necessary ask forhelp, he says.

Fishmongers continue to dump their waste in vleisMELISSA LE ROUX

PRINCESS VLEI is once again beingmisused by fishmongers, who

dumped their dead fish into the wateron Wednesday 9 March at about 18:00.

According to Robert Johnson, known tothe regulars at the vlei as Gino and whohas been sleeping on the vlei for about 17years, the dumping of fish wastage in thewater is a regular occurrence.

However, the ward councillor, Jan Burg-er, says that it does not happen regularly, but only “now and then”. “About everythree to four months we will get a com-plaint about unsanitary dumping of fish.We had a similar situation at Langevlei, but we’ve sorted it out.”

According to Johnson, the culprit whodumped the fish into the vlei was rude, andassaulted him when he told the heavily-built man that he should not dump his

waste into the water.“People come here to get baptised, and

it’s not healthy, because they could get sickif fish are dumped in the water,” he says.Johnson adds that he didn’t want to makea fuss because he was afraid the offenderwould hurt him or his wife, Mieta.

Johnson sayshe usually digsholes in the sandfor the fishmon-gers who want todump their waste.

According toBurger, people have been getting baptisedat the vlei for close to 30 years.

A similar problem has been occurring atLangevlei, where fishmongers also disposeof fish entrails in the water.

The Rondevlei subcouncil has askedwhether Law Enforcement could extend itsworking hours due to problems in theward, which include persistent social

problems at Langevlei, and fishmongerscontributing to the pollution of the vlei bythrowing their fish entrails into it.

Law Enforcement responded by sayingthat the fishmonger who sold his fish at thevlei had been asked to trade elsewhere.

Burger said residents could help by re-porting the disposalof waste in the vleismuch faster.

Chairperson ofthe Retreat Commu-nity Policing Fo-rum (CPF), Kevin

Southgate, says he is opposed to the illegaldumping of fish offal in the vlei or any-where else.

“I am totally against dumping fish wast-age into thevleis. It’s unhealthy, andMetroPolice have to monitor the situation. Thefishmongers should be confronted and giv-en a talking to so that they know they meanbusiness,” he says.

Securing a sustainable future inthe face of escalating global envi-ronmental change requires inno-vative approaches to conservingbiodiversity, and this is the Fitztit-ue’s (as it is commonly known) fo-cus. It is the only ornithological re-search institute in the SouthernHemisphere, and arguably one of

Thefirst intake of coloured women onlyoccurred in 1981,and 19yearoldConstable SharonGeldenhuys (nowMajor General Sharon Jephta) was inthat group. On Friday 1 April she became the DeputyProvincial Commissioner responsible for policing inthe Western Cape. She is pictured here with Western Cape Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Arno Lamoer. Taking up her post, she said one of her priorities would be an aggressive crimepreventiondrive focused on drugs, liquor and firearms, as these are considered the main contributorsto serious and violent crimes. Jephta first started working at Manenberg Police Station.Soon after that she had a sevenyear stint as an instructor at the Bishop Lavis Police College. In 1988 she was promoted to Grassy Park as a branch commander. She vividly remembersher commander’s motivation, which read: “She’s on equal ground with her male colleagues.”She then made a conscious decision not to be equal to her male colleagues, but “to behead and shoulders above the rest”. Jephta also spent time in Mitchell’s Plain as a branchcommander, and later visible police commander, where she started the first communitypolicing partnership. In 1998, she became the station commander of Philippi Police Station,in a time of gang violence. Her interventions, coupled with community involvement, managedto contain the violence to some extent. City’s new horsepowerdoes not come cheapTONY ROBINSON

HAVE you noticed the motorcy-cles the Cape Town traffic cops areriding these days? They are1300 cc Hondas and they costabout R150 000 each.

Now why do the traffic police needsuch powerful motorcycles whentheir operations are confined to themunicipal area wherespeed limits are be-tween 60 and 80 km/h?It is true that speed lim-its do go up to 120 km/hon the freeways, butthat is not where thework is.

So what is the point ofmotorcycles that canrace along at speeds inexcess of 200 km/h?

For less than half theprice, the City couldhave bought versatile600 cc bikes by the samemanufacturer that are also capable ofexcessive speeds. That means theycould have bought twice as manybikes (or saved a lot of money).

How much money? Well, it wouldtake a pensioner who lives in a mod-est home and pays about R500 amonth in rates 16 years to pay the ex-tra cost of a single superbike.

No doubt the traffic departmentwill have their own story. They willprobably explain about the radiosand other equipment the officershave to carry, but that’s all bunkum– radios have never been smaller orlighter than they are now and, any-way, the bike was designed to carry

two. There is no way the equipment(whatever it is) could be heavier orless compact than a pillion passen-ger.

Anybody who has ever ridden amotorcycle (and I am one of them)will tell you that a 600 cc machine ismore than powerful enough for traf-fic work. In fact, the lighter machineis better suited for use in heavy traf-fic. Buying the big 1300 cc superbikes

for traffic cops is as ex-travagant as buyingBMWs and Jaguars forbuilding inspectors andsocial workers.

Of course there was atime, under a previousCity administration, when the mounted traf-fic officers disappearedand the new crop of of-ficers tried to do the jobin air-conditioned carsthat cost even morethan superbikes.

Somehow it alwaystook two cops to drive one car so thisreduced the visible presence on theroads and it reduced their effective-ness because it is darn difficult tothread an air-conditioned Camrythrough a traffic jam to the scene ofan accident. Once there, the car be-comes an extra obstacle.

The mounted traffic officer, on theother hand, can thread his/her waythrough traffic to take charge and getthe traffic flowing again.

So it’s good to see the bikes back, but why the superbikes? We mustthink of the pensioner who has to payan extra 16 years’ rates for the extrahorsepower.

Little lights convey big messageTHEentrance to theRedCrossWarMemorialChil-dren’s Hospital was completely candlelit for EarthHour – between 20:30 and 21:30 – on Saturday 26March.

Fires caused by fallen candles are frequent inCape Town. Last winter 23 children and adults diedin fires caused by six fallen candles in Manenberg,Khayelitsha, and Kleinmond. “These sad eventsincreased the resolve of Childsafe to continue Saf-er Candle Project outreach opportunities, and con-vey the message that a Safer Candle is essentialfor all homes,” Dorothy Schulman, of Childsafe, anon-profit organisation based at the hospital, said. The Safer Candle project teaches parents how to

make a simple, cost-efficient candleholder using alarge glass jar and dry sand. The candles shouldbe cut in half, so that the flame is lower than thetop of the jar. Then, if the jar tips over, the sandextinguishes the flame and prevents the fire fromspreading. Every week Childsafe runs Safer Can-dle demonstrations in the hospital’s outpatientwaiting rooms. During Earth Hour, Childsafe setup 24 Safer Candles in the hospital’s main foyer.“The 24 Safer Candles represent 24 hours in theday, when all citizens should be aware of energysaving and climate change,” Schulman said.

Drug abuse shockSHOCKING statistics in a study conducted bythe University of Stellenbosch serve as a re-minder to parents to consider serious meas-ures to protect the next generation in a fast-paced world plagued by substance abuse.

The study, which targeted 400 pupils from 12high schools in Mitchell’s Plain, was publishedby the SA Family Practice Journal last week. The study found that teenage substance abus-ers living in Mitchell’s Plain are younger thantheir European peers, increasing the risk of de-pendencyat ayoungerage. It also revealed thatthe substance of choice for pupils in the areais tik, with its use having surpassed the useof ecstasy, cocaine and crack.

Based on the study, dagga smoking in Mitch-ell’s Plain was rated at three times the nationalaverage of 10%, determined in 2007.

But while results such as these are indeedshocking, the question remains: how will au-thorities and the families of youths respond tothis information to make a tangible difference?Even if you are not immediately affected bydrug abuse, you’re bound to feel the effects interms of drug-related crime in your localneighbourhood. The police can only fight oneaspect of this scourge – dealing with the crimi-nals who perpetrate the crimes.

The state is drowning under the ever-in-creasing pressure of drug addicted youths, with only a handful of state-run drug rehabcentres serving the broader Cape Town area.

In the case of adolescents and teens, it is real-ly up to their parents, relatives, teachers andactiveNGOs tomake thebiggest impact onper-sonal decisions. Parents, relatives and teach-ers are the roleplayers who should constantlyserve as a moral compass in young people’s de-velopment towards adulthood. Having honestconversations about drug use and abuse, andusing over-the-counter drug tests as tools toidentify potential problems, could also be con-sidered a tool.

With local pupils currently on a week-longbreak, have you asked yourself what your chil-dren are up to? More importantly, should youfind out what you’ve always dreaded, what willyou do about it?

Is this law going to work?THE new Act which governmentis trying to implement is the Actthat raises the age restriction fordrinking from 18 to 21.

This is believed to help prob-lems related to alcohol, such asdomestic violence and road acci-dents. Government has notedthat countries where the age re-striction for drinking alcohol is21 leads to lower alcohol con-sumption.

For a moment, let us be seri-ous. We are not a First Worldcountry, so why are we trying toimitate First World country tac-tics?

And let’s be real, will it reallyreduce alcohol consumption?

Children are seen to be drink-ing in their teenage years al-ready, even smoking. Yet, theSouth African government istrying to support this act.

The effects will just be worse;now we will sit with more 18-year-olds drinking alcohol ille-gally.

The next big thing is corrup-tion. We should seriously takenote of how can we support thisact if it has no real solution to theconstant problems that commu-

nities are facing? We can agree that the govern-

ment is trying to solve the prob-lem, but this does not seem to bethe right way to go about solvingthese problems.

As South Africa, we shouldagree on solving these problemstogether.

We are living in a time of de-mocracy. So because of that, weshouldn’t allow these decisionsto be made without even consid-ering our opinions.

If this Act is implemented, itwill not work if it is only comingfrom government’s side.

To make it work, it requires alot of effort and money to imple-ment.

This money should rather bespent on more important things. The list of problems is endless;to mention just a few, it includeshousing and education.

Perhaps it is time for South Af-ricans to see that change takesplace rapidly and if you do notagree with things, then stand forwhat you believe in and speakout against these injustices.REECE GOODWINCrawford

Red alertRed alert for StormersTASMIN CUPIDO

RUNNING and elusive rugby should beon display when the DHL Stormers

take on the Queensland Reds in round sev-en of the Super Rugby competition at DHLNewlands on Saturday.

Both teams have always been intent onmoving the ball through the backline, with“hard-to-pin-down” backs often gaining valu-able metres and scoring on at-tack.

The men from the Cape re-turned from Durban as the on-ly unbeaten team in the SuperRugby competition, after beat-ing the Sharks 16-6 in a tightly-contested match at Mr PriceKings Park on Saturdayevening.

They also ended the week-end on the top of both theSouth African conference andcombined logs after the win.

The win in the Shark Tankwas the Stormers’ first since2004, and head coach, AllisterCoetzee, was impressed withhis troops’ resilience in wetconditions. “The result cer-tainly was pleasing; it’s toughplaying in front of a packed Durban crowd,”he said. “The side showed resilience and com-posure in difficult circumstances. Despite anunsettling couple of minutes up front, theymanaged to gain composure and keep posses-sion.”

A lone try from skipper, Schalk Burger, was also lauded by the man in charge.

He added that his team’s performance atthe breakdown has been impressive.

“With this Stormers team you can expecta physical encounter each time they play,”Coetzee said.

“Their ability to handle, and more recentlyapply, pressure has been impressive. The en-tire team’s physicality is intense.”

An overall effort was displayed by the menin navy blue, with outside centre, Jaque Fou-rie, again impressing on defence and attack.

Meanwhile, Coetzee and his charges’ atten-tion now shifts to the men from Down Under,

who managed to beat the Li-ons 30-25 at Coca-Cola Park inJohannesburg on Saturday af-ternoon.

The last time the two sidesmet it was the Reds who cameout victorious, in a closely-fought 16-13 encounter in Bris-bane.

And undoubtedly the big-gest battle will be the one be-tween the fly-halves of bothteams, Peter Grant (Stormers)and Quade Cooper (Reds). Both fly-halves have been inform, with Grant controllingthe Stormers’ backline like adrill sergeant and Cooper us-ing his ability to create gaps toget over the advantage lineand break the opposition’s

line of defence. And, with Cooper being incontention for a Wallaby spot, it will also bean opportunity for Peter de Villiers and thenational selectors to assess how Grant wouldperform on international level.

The battle up in the engine room will, morethan likely, determine the winner in the end.But while most Stormers supporters wouldbelieve their team is likely to take home thespoils against the Reds, Coetzee is under noillusion. “Our focus is now on the Reds, whoare a difficult team to stop once they get intothe swing of things,” he said. “The competi-tion is still young and we need to focus oneach match individually and maintain ourcurrent performance levels.”

Premier Cup vibe engrosses soccerBRIAN GAFFNEY

THE Metropolitan Premier Cupfor under-19s reached newheights when some of the who’swho in South African footballrendered impetus to the launchof the 23rd cup championship atCape Town Stadium.

Two much-revered VIP guests atthe launch were the legendaryDutch coach Foppe de Haan – nowat the helm of Ajax Cape TownFC – and former Bafana Bafana starSibusiso Zuma.

De Haan was the keynote speak-er, while Zuma – currently spear-heading the Vasco da Gama FC at-tack in the Premier Soccer League –was honoured as the first tourna-ment ambassador.

The Premier Cup champion-ship – that carries R30 000 in prizemoney for the winners – will take

place at Erica Park in Belhar fromWednesday 20 until Monday 25April (Easter Monday).

De Haan said he regarded the Pre-mierCupchampionship asbeingonpar with the major youth champi-onships in Europe. “When Iwatched the youth cup matches forthe first time last year I was im-pressed by the football passion thatprevailed, as well as the top-classorganisation of the event.”

De Haan, who ironically an-nounced his retirement from top-level coaching a day after thelaunch on Tuesday 29 March, urgedyoung footballers to “live theirdreams” and stressed that intensededication and discipline shouldnot be compromised if players wantto play international soccer. TheAjax coach will return to Holland inMay to spend time with his family.

Zuma said that it was an honourfor him to be named as the ambassa-

dor of a tournament with such aproud history of being a spring-board for several of South Africa’sfinest footballers.

Bafana Bafana players like BenniMcCarthy, Muneeb Josephs, Ste-ven Pienaar, Thulani Serero andMatthew Booth, among others, have progressed through the Pre-mier Cup ranks to internationallevel.

“We need to pass on our knowl-edge and experiences to the currentcrop of players so that they too cansucceed in life and become the leg-ends of tomorrow,” said Zuma, whohas accepted a lucrative transferfrom Vasco to SuperSport UnitedFC at the end of this season.

Zuma’s tasks will include men-toring the youth footballers on thelife skills programmes at Belhar.

Ajax Cape Town FC, Santos FC,Vasco Da Gama FC, Mamelodi Sun-downs FC, Moroka Swallows, Blo-

emfontein Celtic, Kaizer Chiefs andSuperSport United were among theseeded teams in the draw.

The Cape Town-based clubs havein recent years been overshadowedby their rivals from the north, withSuperSport United (2010), Sun-downs (2009), Bright Stars (2007)and Harmony Academy (2006) mak-ing their presence felt.

Ajax Cape Town – with ThulaniSerero and Sameehg Doutie playingprominent roles won the – cup in2008 and 2005, while Santos tri-umphed in 2005.

This year marks the biggest Afri-can contingent since the tourna-ment’s inception, with clubs fromLesotho, Zimbabwe, Angola, Na-mibia and Botswana confirmingtheir entries.

The South Nottingham Collegefrom England will be the other for-eign team taking part in the 32-clubchampionship.
