Her accusation comes after two raids at her Rondebosch East house in three weeks, following a confron- tation with the anti-gang and drug movement that accused her son of manufacturing and selling tik from their Heatherley Road house. Four days after the stand-off, her house was petrol-bombed, allegedly by a man driving a car she saw du- ring the confrontation with the group of about 60 men (“Petrol- bombing in Rondebosch East”, Peo- ple’s Post, 29 March). The woman, who asks not to be named for fear of further traumati- sing her daughters and extended family, says police harassed her children on three occasions since the incident. “I’m seriously considering insti- tuting legal proceedings against them because things cannot conti- nue this way,” she tells People’s Post. “This is causing stress and embarrassment to me and my household and I will no longer tole- rate it.” The seamstress says that a week after the petrol bomb incident, her son and two friends were cornered by a group of officers opposite their home. “I had been working at my sewing machine at about 15:00 when I saw an armed policeman run past the side of the house. I ran outside to see what was happening and was shocked to see that the road had been cordoned off and my son and his two friends were lying in the road while they and the car were being searched. I asked them what they were doing and an officer said I must get into the house be- cause shots were going to be fired. I started protesting and my son told me to go inside. As I watched from my gate, the main officer showed the others that there was nothing and they simply got into their vehi- cles and drove off.” An hour and a half later, while the family sat in their lounge wat- ching TV, another group of officers showed up at her door. “My daughter took the key and wanted to unlock the security gate, but the officers were trying to break through it with their crowbars. She started shouting that it wasn’t ne- cessary to break it down and when she opened up, the policemen poin- ted guns at them and instructed them to lie on the floor.” She says she refused to lie on the ground because she “had to see to the kids”. “Some of them ran down the pas- sage while the others stayed with us in the lounge. My 20-year-old daughter accompanied them while they searched through our house, throwing clothes on the floor and hitting holes into the doors. I made it clear to them from the onset that there were no locked doors in my house. None of the damage was ne- cessary.” She says the officers then moved to the cottage in her back yard, which is being leased by two te- nants. “I protested because they were not home and I did not want to in- vade their privacy. They were not willing to accept this and they threatened to break down the door if I didn’t produce the keys. When I eventually found a key that fit they went in and trashed the place, throwing their belongings around and turning the whole place upside down.” The police found nothing illegal in the house or in the cottage. “As they were leaving, I asked them why they had not produced a search warrant. This was the third time I had asked them. Earlier they would respond by telling me to shut up. The officer showed it to me as they were leaving and when I asked what they had been looking for, he told me stolen goods and drugs. Where do they get this nonsense? What gives them the right to barge into my home, upset my family and turn my house into a war zone when they have no proof that we are in- volved in illegal activities?” But this was not the first time her home was left in a mess by the au- thorities. Two weeks ago, a different group of officers entered her home while her 15-year-old daughter was sitting in the lounge. “They barged into the house armed with long rifles and she got such a fright, she ran down the pas- sage and out the back door as I rushed out of the kitchen to see what was happening at the front door. Next thing I know, these men carrying massive guns force their way past me and follow her out the back door, thinking she is fleeing with drugs. When I got there, she was standing in the yard in tears, totally terrified by what was going on. Eventually she agreed to come in and the officers started scouring the house, once again finding no- thing.” However, the raid on Thursday was the final straw for the mother of four. “After the officers left, I went straight to Lansdowne Police Sta- tion and asked for the station com- missioner. She had already left and when I returned the next morning, she was apparently unavailable. I spoke to the second-in-command and when I told her what had hap- pened, she acted shocked, saying ‘they weren’t supposed to break an- ything’. I told her that I wanted them to look into what had hap- pened and what proof they had to warrant such action.” She says the superintendent told her that they were being “pressu- rised by Pagad” to do something about the drugs and gangsterism within the precinct. “That, I am sorry to say, is not my problem. There are real drug dea- lers and criminals doing their dea- lings without fear while innocent families are being harassed. What is this experience teaching my chil- dren about the police? That they can just pounce on whatever house they want, invade their privacy and make false accusations because they are the law? My family has gone through enough trauma as it is.” The woman says she was contac- ted by a warrant officer at the sta- tion, who asked her to download photos taken after the incident and to supply them with quotes for the damages incurred. “I don’t see much happening with this case because the investigating officer is the same policeman who is supposedly looking into the pe- trol bombing of my house. “He still hasn’t given me any sa- tisfactory feedback about the first incident.” She adds that she visited the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on Fri- day, where she spoke to a senior magistrate who advised her to sue the police. “Even though I don’t want to put my family through the trauma, there is nothing else I can do. I have to stop what the police are doing to us and if this is the only thing I can do, it has to be done.” Colonel Livona Januari, the sta- tion commissioner of Lansdowne police, denies that her team is tar- geting the house because of pres- sure from Pagad. “We are acting on information received from the com- munity. Observations were done and the house was implicated. We are doing our job by following up on tip-offs.” Hanif Loonat, the chairperson of the Nyanga Cluster Community Po- lice Forum, says it’s the communi- ty, not Pagad, placing pressure on the police. “If they stop their non- sense, the police will stop harassing them. The community will not be si- lenced and they will be caught even- tually. “We will continue, even if they are caught after 10 raids.” Osman Sahib, an executive mem- ber of Pagad, says he has “no sym- pathy” for the woman. “She knows what her son is doing. He has de- stroyed a countless number of lives so this is really a small price she is paying for his deeds,” he says. The organisation is “placing pressure” on all police stations to act on suspected drug dealers be- cause lives are being destroyed, Sa- hib adds. “Besides, the police won’t just act because we say so. They are being given information by the communi- ties and the authorities are reacting to these tip-offs, as they should.” [email protected] ‘Pagad pressure’ blamed for raids DAMAGING: The outside gate was damaged even though her daughter was willing to unlock it, the woman claims. DESTRUCTIVE: A gaping hole in the toilet door was “totally unneces- sary” as the door was unlocked at the time of the raid, she says.

    TAMMY PETERSEN

A SINGLE mother claimspressure from Pagad on themanagement of a local police sta-tion has led to her home beingtargeted during sting opera-tions, traumatising her and herchildren.

Her accusation comes after tworaids at her Rondebosch East housein three weeks, following a confron-tation with the anti-gang and drugmovement that accused her son ofmanufacturing and selling tik fromtheir Heatherley Road house.

CHARLOTTE TABISHER, aformer DA councillor whowas axed after being convictedon eight charges of misconduct, wants to be councillor again.

All political parties and inde-pendent candidates throughoutCape Town are gear-ing up for the lo-cal governmentelections onWednesday 18May and Tabish-er is a part of thatrace.

Tabisher, aformer Ward 49councillor whofaced criminalcharges and wasremoved as a Cityof Cape Towncouncillor onThursday 24 June2010, has decidedto once again runfor the position ofcouncillor, thistime in Ward 47, which coversHanover Park.

Tabisher was found guilty ofmisconduct on Wednesday 14April 2010 by the Citys discipli-nary committee after an internalinvestigation since August last

year (Councillor could be axed,Peoples Post, 19 April).

She was found guilty on eightcharges of accepting deposits fromresidents who were waiting forhouses in the Statice HeightsHousing Project in Kewtown.

For this she was fined R10 000.She was also found guilty of a

ninth charge of creating fraudu-lent documentation for a

    community member.Local Government

MEC Anton Bredellconcurred with theCity in finding herguilty of contraveningthe Code of Conduct forCouncillors.

For this, the discipli-nary committee askedthat she be removed asward councillor.

Tabisher is now run-ning under the bannerof a new party, theSouth African Progres-siveCivicOrganisation(SAPCO) which wasformed in May 2010.

Peoples Post tried togain comment from Tabisher viatelephone. She asked thereporter to call back, and when the reporterdid, her cellphone wasanswered by a man, whosaid he would ask her to

call the reporter, but by the timeof going to print she had not doneso.

Frank Smit, who started SAP-CO, has since withdrawn from theparty.

I have walked out of the party.I cannot mislead my people. I start-ed the organisation and wanted tomake a difference, to fight civic is-sues, but then all the wrong peoplestarted joining the party.

When Tabisher came on board,I wasnt comfortable at all, shemisled the people and was foundguilty on nine charges, yet nowshe wants to be councillor again.I have since joined the National In-dependent Civic Organisation be-cause I do not want to be part ofmisleading the people.

Courtney Sampson, the provin-cial electoral officer, says Tabish-er has every right to be a candi-date. She is a South African citi-zen and she is registered in themunicipality she is contesting asa voter. According to the legisla-tion she can be a candidate and canalsobe the councillor if she is elect-ed. If the people want her, the peo-ple will have her.

Big fish nabbed after local arrestTAMMY PETERSEN

THE arrest of what is believed to be threesmall-time dealers in Rondebosch East ledLansdowne police to a big fish in CapeTown.

A tip-off from a Fourth Avenue resident onThursday 7 April, who suspected that drugswere being delivered at a house in his road, saw R21 600s worth of dagga being confiscat-ed.

Warrant Officer Robert Lakey, spokesper-son for Lansdowne police, says the call wasmade at 11:10 that morning and a sector vehi-cle was immediately dispatched to follow up.

As the officers were driving to the scene,a second call came through, alerting themembers that the car had driven off. Afterthe description of the vehicle was given, thecar drove past the police van and we gavechase. They were apprehended within theroad and the two suspects were taken backto the house where the deal allegedly tookplace.

One of the men then confessed to what hadhappened and told the police where the loadwas being stored. We searched the houseand found a locked safe. When it was opened,27 small packets of high-grade, indoor culti-vated dagga known as cheese, were found,as well as 15 seven-gram units and one biggerbag of dagga. The safe, as well as the drugs, was taken to the station to serve as evi-dence.

Lakey says the man who lived in the house

and the two men who had been in the carwere immediately arrested.

One of the suspects was released into hisparents care shortly thereafter as he is only16 years old. The other two appeared in thenight court the following night and were re-leased on bail.

While in custody, the suspects pointed thepolice to a Tanzanian national living in Cas-tle Street, Cape Town, who is allegedly theirsupplier. The suspects provided the officerwith a contact number. He then called the al-leged dealer, posing as a customer and theman then invited the policeman to his flat.

On their arrival, the 30-year-old man, whocalls himself Joe, produced a sealed chipspacket to the officers who opened it andfound dagga inside.

The officer then identified himself andplaced the man under arrest. The man al-lowed the officers to search his home, andthree similar bags were found, totalling 70grams of dagga valued at R600. The man wastaken to the Cape Town Central police sta-tion where he was charged with dealing indrugs.

Lakey encourages anyone with informa-tion on suspected peddlers, the big fish orsmall fry, to phone the police on (021) 700-9000. The smaller dealers are connected tothe major criminals. By fingering the minorplayers we can possibly corner the big-timemerchants and make huge steps forward inour fight against drug abuse, Lakey con-cludes.

    Community worker arrestedTAMMY PETERSEN

ONE of the founding members ofHanover Parks DA Womens Fo-rum and a familiar face who feeds thepoor was arrested last week for posses-sion of an illegal gun.

Fatima van Schoor (53) appeared in theAthlone Magistrates Court on Monday 11April and spent a week in Pollsmoor Prisonbefore being released on R800 bail last Mon-day.

Police spokesperson, Warrant OfficerIan Bennett, says members of Philippi po-lice raided Van Schoors Hanover Park Av-enue house on Friday 8 April at 16:00.

An unlicensed firearm was found in thehouse and the woman was arrested, hesays.

The gun was sent for analysis to deter-mine if it had been stolen and who it be-longs to.

But Van Schoor says the gun was plantedby the officers, who she claims were notfrom Philippi police but from Grassy Park.

They came into my house with theirwarrant and searched my house. I accom-panied them to my room and as the officerwas going through my wardrobe, I saw himtake the gun out from under his bullet-proof vest and produce it like he found itthere. Next thing they arrested me and myson and put us in the van.

She says the officers told her that the gunwas used in a murder in Lavender Hill.

They told me to implicate my son but Ididnt. I am totally against guns. Why

would we be involved in a murder case? Iwork for the community!

Her son was later released while VanSchoor remained in custody.

While local community workers wereshocked at the incident, they were furtheroutraged when local DA members appa-rently started a petition after her arrest ina bid to get her released when she appearedin theAthloneMagistratesCourt lastMon-day.

A community worker, who asked not tobe named, says residents approached herafter being asked to sign the appeal and de-scribes the move as an outrage.

We as community workers are here toact as an example for the residents, wholook to us for help and guidance.

The fact that she was arrested is disap-pointing, but no one is above the law andif it is found that she is involved in criminalactivity the same legal steps taken againstany other suspect should be institutedagainst her.

She says a bad example is being set bythose collecting support for her release.

Let the law lead the way. If she is foundto be innocent she will be cleared. You cantuse politics to try and interfere in thecourse of justice.

But Van Schoor hits back that the resi-dents were showing support because theyknow she would never be involved insomething like this.

The people know me and they know thetruth. What I went through was traumati-sing. I am taking this thing to the Independ-ent Complaints Directorate.

Where are you?CAPETOWNChildWelfare is seekingRan-dall Rippenaar, the father of Fatima Vieira, who was last seen in Bishop Lavis.

Vacant block of flats clearedTAMMY PETERSEN

ELEVEN people were removed from a half-built blockof flats inLansdowneRoadonFri-day night by police and neighbourhoodwatch members.

The owners of the development have alsocommitted to fencing the eyesore and secu-rity guards have been dispatched to the site, which residents say has become a magnet forcriminals and unsavoury characters.

In Fridays operation, the inhabitantswere found sleeping and loitering in varioussections of the development and were chasedfrom the property by the officers.

Warrant Officer Robert Lakey, spokesper-son for Lansdowne police, says the peoplewent quietly after being given a chance toretrieve their bags and mattresses.

We visited the property over the weekendand until now there has been no other activi-ty at the site. Continuous check-ups will beconducted, he says.

Hanif Loonat, the Nyanga Cluster Commu-nity Police Forum chairperson, says the ac-tion stems from community concerns oversafety. This place has become a den for drugdealers because of how dark it is, as well asan easy business point for the prostitutes op-erating on Lansdowne Road. Police intelli-gence has also found evidence that the houseis being used to store stolen goods, he says.

Jeremy Joseph, who has been living inLansdowne for the past 32 years, says thebuilding creates a slum feel to the area.

Its an embarrassing eyesore. It standsout like a sore thumb and gives a disgracefulimpression of the hard-working and proudpeople who live here, the angry residentsays.

    Things have changed drastically since

he and his wife initially moved into the area,Joseph continues.

This used to be an area where decent,well-educated lived. But the prostitutes anddrug dealers have turned this into a shame-ful place. Get rid of the scum! The people ofLansdowne need to stop living in their shellsand allowing their streets to become crimescenes.

Root out those who dont have the areasbest interests at heart. They have no respectfor those who live here.

Nomathansanqa Mili, who has been work-ing at a Lansdowne Road business for 13years, says she regularly notices peoplewho look like skollies slipping in and out ofthe building. Its easy for them to get inthere and do what they like. Im concernedbecause although I live in Philippi, this placeis my second home and I can see howLansdowne is heading in a bad direction.

She says she sometimes chases school chil-dren away from the house when she catchesthe bus home because its dangerous inthere. I dont know what they want to doin there. Whoever owns the place must takeresponsibility and sort out this building. Ei-ther finish the development or secure it sothat it doesnt become a full-on drug den.

Mohamed Ismail, from Priority Develop-ers cc, which owns the building, says build-ing ceased due to a lack of funding, but heand his partners are in the process of apply-ing to banks for further finance.

Building will continue once we have se-cured this. In the meantime, security guardsare already on duty so that we can keep peo-ple off the property. We have also applied tocouncil for permission to build a boundarywall, which will be done as soon as the pro-posal is approved.

Several chopped-up refuse bins and crateswere found on his property.

Neil Arendse, Law Enforcement spokes-person, says the man was arrested becausethe bins were council-issued.

He says there has been an increase in thenumber of bins being chopped up and sentto the Far East, as they are made from a spe-cial type of plastic which is in demand over-seas.

FREEDOM DAY on 27 April will be cel-ebrated with a creative spirit when theGenerations Cafe in Epping hosts aBand Aid fund-raiser in conjunctionwith theWesternCapeMusiciansAsso-ciation.

CalvinPeters, of thevenuebetterknownas The G Spot, says this event is to cele-brate music that played a part in the free-dom of this country, and to raise moneyfor musicians who are in despair.

Theparticularbeneficiaryat this eventwill be guitarist Julius May, a young manwho became susceptible to substanceabuse and other temptations as well as thepitfalls of the industry like alcohol.

After a suicide attempt three monthsago, Julius decided to turn his life aroundand go to a rehab for cleansing and to re-start his life.

Ironically 27 April, which is FreedomDay, will mark Juliuss discharge from re-hab and the talented young guitarist haspledged to assist other aspiring musoswho experience the same struggle in theindustry.

He will also perform with his band onthe day, said Peters.

Peters added that Julius was one of themost talented guitarists to come up duringrecent times, sharing the stage with manyof the legends around town over the years.

Many of the musicians are supportinghim through this time and will be offeringtheir time and talents to take to the stage.

These include musicians such asJonathan Rubain, Allou April, Blackkur-

rant, Sammy Webber, The Next Step,Brown Suga, and many more, but any art-ists who would still like to perform canjust rock up on the day.

Fires will be provided for a bring nbraai and the doors will open at 14:00. Thelive action will kick off at 16:00, with a min-imum donation of R40.

Any bands or artists who want to con-tribute are welcome to come along or callWilliam Rezandt on 073 399 0244 for moreinfo.

ON Saturday 9 April, I was at Checkersat Kenilworth Centre when I suddenlyheard somebody calling.

I turned around and saw a lady with mypurse in her hand.

My heart fell in my shoes. I didnt feelmy purse falling out of my pocket. Ladiesjeans have too-small pockets. She askedme if it was mine and it was.

But the shock was so severe that I onlythanked the lady and she turned aroundand disappeared in the crowd. Id loved tohave given her something, even a big hug,to invite her for a coffee or lunch, but I

awoke too late.I still needed lots of time to get over it!

There was not much money in the purse, but some cards and it had been a memoryfrom home.

Id love to thank this wonderful lady. Itmade my feelings grow that there are stillhonest and good people out there whoknow what it means to lose a purse.

Stay safeAS MANY Capetonians eagerly await the ar-rival of the Easter weekend, the reality is thatsome of us may unknowingly be marching toour demise.

South Africans travel both long and shortdistances over the Easter weekend, whichmeans greater traffic volumes on our roads.

With this comes a higher probability of fa-tal and non-fatal accidents, which traditional-ly makes this period so tragic.

And while the City of Cape Town promisesincreased patrols on our roads at the week-end, the good news is that every one of us cando something about this problem.

In 2010, the national death toll on South Af-rican roads reached 105 far fewer than the197 fatalities reported in 2009.

This year the City has taken a proactive ap-proach to curbing rising death tolls by offer-ing free roadworthy safety checks to moto-rists ahead of the Easter weekend.

But inevitably, with most holidays excesskicks in. Alcohol and drug use will, no doubt, again have a huge impact on how well motor-ists obey the rules of the road.

And as schools and institutions of higherlearning also close for the break, the numberof inexperienced drivers and young passen-gers on our roads will also increase.

A road safety initiative in Australia callson families to check-off a range of safe drivingmethods, such as putting a curfew on nightdriving for young people.

Shouldnt local motorists draw up the samecontract with themselves, pledging not todrive when intoxicated, and choosing insteadto put their keys down and sober up first?

Similarly if youre a passenger, wear a seat-belt at all times and, when confronted by adifficult situation, choose not to get into a carwith an intoxicated driver.

An accident can happen in a second as a re-sult of the smallest oversight. Personal re-sponsibility is your safest bet to stay alive onour roads, so be responsible for yourself andthose around you.

    Have a safe Easter weekend.

Measures in place tocombat Vangate car gangREYANA STEYN

VANGATE Mall management andAthlone police are putting extrameasures in place to curb an increase incrime at the shopping venue.

Police believe a car syndicate is behind therecent increase in theft of motor vehicles, theft out of motor vehicles and robberies.

According to reports, 10 vehicles were sto-len in three weeks.

Lynn Oliver, Vangate Malls centre man-ager, says there have been incidents of crimesuch as car thefts and theft out of motor vehi-cles in the early hours of the morning.

In a bid to clamp dowon on crime, thenumberof security andcar guardshavebeenincreased at the mall.

All four entrances of the mall are alsoclosed before 21:00 and monitored, especiallywhere the food court is situated, as more peo-ple frequent that area at night and stay later.Security is also clamping down on loiteringinside andoutside themall,as this could alsoresult in criminal activity.

She says they are working closely with po-lice.

The thefts of motor vehicles and theft outof motor vehicles which were captured onsurveillance footage, were shown topolice sothey can investigate further.

We care about the safety of our shoppersand we are doing everything in our powerto prevent crime.

Warrant Officer Ian Bennett, Athlone po-lice spokesperson, says police are conduct-ing patrols in the area daily.

There is a growing concern by police that

crime in and around the mall is increasingas more vehicles have been stolen and morerobberies are taking place. We are patrollingall the access points such as the N2, Van-guard Drive, Heideveld, Klipfontein Road, aswell as Bosduif and Petunia roads to capturethe criminals.

Police officers are also doing regularstops-and-searches within the area, check-ing for possible criminals. They are also fol-lowing up on footage from the mall.

Bennett says malls attract criminals be-cause they know shoppers have money onthem.

Due to the increase in crime we are urg-ing people to be more vigilant with their be-longings and their cars.

Peoples Post previously reported that po-lice cracked down on a group responsible fora spate of car thefts in Vangate Malls park-ing area. Six men were caught red-handedand arrested (Police end rash of car thefts,5 October 2010). Bennett says crime haspicked up at Vangate Mall following a lull incriminal activity.

It is another car syndicate which is doingits rounds. People should not draw largesums of money from the bank and theyshould rather make alternative arrange-ments or go in large groups.

They should also be wary of carrying val-uable items on them or in their cars as thisalso makes them victims of crime.

Oliver also urges shoppers to ensure thattheir cars are locked and safe and that allsafety precautions are followed.

If shoppers notice anything suspicious, they should let the malls security know.

To report crime call (021) 697-9238.
