Mike Voortman, chairman of the newly-formed Constantia Valley Watch Association (CVWA), said since the cameras have been installed there has been a marked increase in the number of arrests. He was speaking at the Diep River and Kirstenhof Community Police Fo- rum (CPF) meeting at the Alphen Hall, Constantia, to a packed audience on Monday 30 July. Eight watches are now working to- gether with the police to step up crime prevention. This includes BKM, Con- stantia Watch, Constantia Hills, Nova Constantia, Plumstead, Southfield, Kirstenhof and Tokai. The CVWA is also sharing informa- tion in adjacent areas with initiatives in areas such as Hout Bay and Bishop- scourt. Many suspects have been linked to crimes in other areas, thanks to information sharing which assists police to build a stronger case. Cars can also be tagged and reported. Voortman said the LPR cameras have been very successful – for in- stance, two men who were suspects in 20 break-ins were caught in Fish Hoek. The cameras clearly show the number plates and photographs of the vehicles which have been linked to crimes in other areas. The LPR cameras have cost over R1 million to implement and when oth- er funds become available, more will be added. Currently some 20 000 properties are covered. There are 18 location points in the Valley and the network is con- stantly expanding. “More importantly,” said Voort- man, “everyone is getting together col- lectively to work with the criminal jus- tice system to keep criminals in jail. We must work in partnerships and work in a professional way, or we will fall behind.” He warned that the criminals are professionals, they keep finding new ways to bypass alarms, so it is impor- tant to move forward and not give up. “Teamwork and cooperation is im- portant for success, we aim to expand until the whole valley is wrapped up. Each watch has to keep in touch and pool resources.” The idea for the cameras and joining forces with all the watches, Kirstenhof and Diep River CPFs, police and the City of Cape Town, was originally sug- gested by Clem Sunter at a strategy planning session for the CVWA. Diep River police reported the cam- eras have been a tremendous success for operational purposes and helped solve many cases. A further initiative is the relocation of the Valley Information Centre to Bergvliet. This includes camera monitoring and the management of the radio net- work linking the Valley. Voortman said the ongoing sponsorship by ADT is a boost to the Valley and the initia- tives were welcomed by police and community. TOXIC TALENT: Capetonians again proved they have talent when musicians, singers, dancers, actors and various other acts flocked to the Cape Town Convention Centre for the SA’s Got Talent auditions at the weekend. The show, which premieres on e.tv on Thursday 30 August, sees judges Shado Twala, Ian von Memetry and Kabelo Mabalane travel across the country in search of the most talented South African. Although Lance Landor (pictured) was not given three green lights to progress to the next round, he certainly entertained the crowd with his ‘Melbourne Shuffle’. What women wantDear reader,

NationalWomen’sDay,Thursday9 August, is approached by mostwith mixed feelings. On the one hand, we have cause

for celebration when we rememberthe triumphs of women over thepast decades, most notably 9August1956 when more than 20 000 womenof diverse cultures fearlessly pro-tested proposedpass lawsbymarch-ing on theUnionBuildings in Preto-ria.Women have deservedly assumed

their place in the business, politicaland sporting arenas. We’re thequintessential multi-taskers, adeptly juggling ourvarious roles – careers, motherhood, marriage, community work...According to the Inter-Parliamentary Union

and UNWomen, there are “currently 17 countrieswith women as head of government, head of stateor both”.Globally, Thursday will mark the 101st Interna-

tional Women’s Day and abroad and locally, thou-sands of events are being planned. With all the awareness and altruistic efforts by

government and organisations committed towomen empowerment, as well as the powerwield-ed by women today, it is the greatest irony thatasmanywomenare victims of abuse andviolence. However, statistics on violence against women

in South Africa is not reliable, because many cas-es go unreported. This is due to a number of factors, such as stig-

ma, financial instability, fear of repercussionsfrom abusive partners, a lack of information andeducation around women’s rights when it comesto reporting abuse, and limited to no resources forescaping abuse. There is also the “system”, suchas theprocesses

and red tape involved in filing for divorce, and thecomplexities of the Domestic Violence Act.Many women can testify how they’ve been sent

back home to further abuse, in thename of “getting both sides of thestory” before divorce becomes anoption.Duringmy stint as a court report-

er, I would forcemyself to listen dis-passionately to the trials aboutwomen who had been assaulted, andnearly killed, by their partners. The women had been kidnapped,

locked up, beaten with concrete ob-jects, stabbed...My intended disconnection was

twofold, I reasoned; firstly, profes-sional and secondly, to distancemy-self from my life experiences andthat of others I care about.

As a reporter, I had been trained to be objectiveand report the facts; but my training did not ex-tend tomyhumanity and it became impossible forme to detach as I looked at the women painfullytestifying against themen theyhadonce lovedandtrusted. The tragedy was that most of the men charged

with assaulting “their women”, appeared unaf-fected, emotionally void. Our most profound memories take root during

childhood and it is critical that education beginsprimarily in the homeand includes conversationsaround respecting and valuing all people, includ-ing women. The onus is on both parents to showrespect towards one another. The following organisations provide counsel-

ling and services to women: Family andMarriageAssociation of South Africa in Observatory (021447-7951; [email protected]);Mosaic inWyn-berg (021 761 7585); Saartjie Baartman Centre inAthlone (021 633 5287); Woman Abuse Line (0800150 150); HIV/Aids National Line (0800 012 322).’Til next time, go well!ConnectED is a weekly column by People’s

DON’T DO IT: Ryan Africa believesdrunk people should use alternativetransport. “it is clear thatwith the current percentage they are still drinkingand that wont stop, even if the percentage is lowered.”

DROP IT: Zandile Qumza agrees the percentage should be decreased. “It is goodthat the percentage will be lowered, butit should be 0.0 because drunk drivingkills a lot of innocent people on theroads.”

GREAT IDEA: Andries Burger believes the percentage should belowered. “If one would not drinkthey would know how to drive onthe roads. Drunk driving is dangerous to sober road users.”

DRINKING KILLS: Rachel Konig saysshe has bad memories of alcohol. “Ihad a friend who was killed in an accident caused by a drunk driver. Nobodywho has had a drink should be allowedto drive. No percentage should be allowed.”

ALCOHOL CHANGES PEOPLE: LynneVester says the behaviour differs between a sober and intoxicated person.“When a person is drunk they are completely different. There should be nodrinking and driving at all. The percentage should be 0.0.”

A PROPOSED amendment tothe national road trafficamendment bill could see thelegal alcohol limit reducedfrom 0.05 to 0.02 grams.

The Road Traffic ManagementCorporation’s Ashref Ismail saysalcohol is a major factor in roaddeaths.More than 65% of all major fa-

tal crashes are attributed to alco-hol consumption. The bill is open for public com-

ment until Saturday 18 August.People’s Post readers shared theirviews with Luzuko Zini andTarren-Lee Habelgaarn.

Battle to save vlei rages onLUZUKO ZINI

OPPOSITION to the proposed shopping mall devel-opment at Princess Vlei continues as groups rally tosave the wetlands.

On Saturday various opposition groups, which formsthe Princess Vlei Forum (PVF), gathered to discuss theway forward. The Forummet at the weekly Jolly Carp OrganicMar-

ket, whichneighbours the vlei, to discuss plans to launchanother petition signing to oppose the development. ButPVF claims they are still being kept in the dark aboutwhat will happen at the vlei.It has been a tug-of-war between development and con-

servation since developers Insight Property first submit-ted plans to develop the City of Cape Town owned landin 1998. Theproposeddevelopment entails a 9090m² shop-ping mall and 100m² taxi rank, leaving only a 30m bufferstrip of land for recreation purposes at the water’s edge. The City initially approved the proposed development

on condition of an environmental impact assessment(EIA) and public participation process (PPP) for the re-zoning of the land from public open space to business.Several objections during thePPP, aswell as questions

regarding the findings of the EIA led to a halt in the proc-ess, with the allocated time for the Record of Decision

(ROD) lapsing. In November the City’s Spatial Planning, Environ-

ment and Land Use Management Committee (Spelum)turned down the developer’s application for the exten-sion of the rezoning. The developers, in turn, appealed to theMEC for Envi-

ronmental Affairs and Development Planning AntonBredell, who approved the application for the land to berezoned from public open space to business in April.PVF chairperson Phillip Bam says they are currently

in talks with the City to discuss the way forward.“Right now nobody from the provincial Department

of Environmental Affairs is giving us an answer as towhat will happen.“The public can voice their opinion and join our cam-

paign of saving the Princess,” Bam said.“We also want to get themayor involved – people want

to know what Patricia de Lille has to say about the pro-posed development.”Members of the Forum are adamant the signing of a

petition will not only create public awareness – especial-ly in areas across themetropole – but also be a clear indi-cation that people do not want the development to goahead.Petrina Roberts says: “So far we have had positive

feedback and we will continue doing so until we get as-surance that Princess Vlei will stay as is.”

Survivorspeaksof blastJUANITA WILLIAMS

IN THE blink of an eyeBruce Walsh’s lifechanged forever on thefateful day he joined col-leagues for a farewell par-ty at Planet Hollywood on25 August 1998.

He walked into Planet Hol-lywood a normal person andwoke up in hospital with nolegs from the knees down, and a badly injured arm. Hislife was never the sameagain.Walsh shared his story at

the Constantia Watch meet-ing held in the Alphen Hall,Constantia, on Monday 30July.He said he likes to tell his

story to inspire people. “Weare all confrontedwith choic-es and decisions and theselife choices fall into two cate-gories – winners and losers.Winners are respectable, re-liable, dependable; they un-derstand we are here for apurpose. They set goals, haveperseverance and are ac-countable. They are lead-ers,” Walsh said.“Losers always have ex-

cuses, have no focus, no per-severance, are emotionallyexhausting and have issues.Winners take control – theyare survivors, theyplay theircards well. Losers get stuckin a problem, trapped in arole, they are victims.”He said it was hard not to

be a loser after the bomb ex-ploded. “I could have beenbitter, resigned to a wheelchair, but I made a decisionto get my life back.”Before that fateful day,

Walsh lived alone with histwo dogs in a beautiful homeinDurbanville overlooking awine estate. “That morning Iput on my running shoes forthe last time.”Adedicated runner, hehad

attempted three, but onlycompleted one ComradesMarathon, and also complet-ed one Two Oceans.“I locked up the house, left

the radio and stoep light onand went to work. We haveno guarantees that when weleave our homes in themorn-ing, will return in one pieceor at all that evening, and sowe must seize the moment. That evening after work Idrove to the Waterfront andarrived at Planet Hollywoodat 19:00. I strolled up to thebarwith two colleagues, tookmy wallet out of my pocketand then the bomb explodedbeneath us. Both colleaguesdied and I was blown up intothe air. I remember the in-tense pain and felt Iwas float-ing on the ceiling. There wasdust, blood and chaos, peoplewere screaming and I shallnever forget the acrid smellof thebomb. My feet hadbeenblown off, and when I hit theground my skull was frac-tured, I had blood on thebrain, burst ear drums,

crushed bones in my leftarm, and 60%ofmy body hadsecond-degree burns. The de-bris of the bomb had cloggedmy lungs and with the un-controllable internal bleed-ing my organs were shuttingdown.”Bruce was unaware of all

this when he woke up in ICUa month later at the Chris-tian Barnard Memorial Hos-pital. “My first thought was‘it must have been one hellu-va party’. I tried to get out ofbed, but didn’t get far and hitthe floor. When the nursecame into the room and toldme I had no legs, I didn’t be-lieve her.”At that point, Walsh made

the decision to fight. “I setmy first goal, to get my lifeback. I missed my daily rou-tine, but had a healthy self-esteemand belief inmy abili-ties.”He had to learn to walk

again, which was a painful, difficult process andhewant-ed to run again, as that wasthe way he sorted out prob-lems.“I went home alone and

wanted to take a bath, whichwasn’t easy with no armsand no legs, but I made aplan. Eventually, I startedwalking on crutches, andgave away the wheelchair, then progressed to walkingon ‘broomstick’ legs. Whenpeople saw me walkingaround in the mall, theythought I was drunk.”Once Walsh had adjusted

to walking on artificial legs,he joined Walk, Run for Lifeand started to fight his wayback to fitness.Heeventuallycompleted a 5km fun run andnow is managing 30kms aweek.Another operation helped

Walsh to regain the use of hisleft hand, but hehad to recov-er on an emotional level.“I was angry at having to

say ‘goodbye’ to my life as afit 45-year-old. There was no-where to hide; happily a clin-ical psychologist helped meto recover and become awin-ner again.”His struggle paid off andhe

has regained his life – hedrives a car and walks on aset of “very expensive legs”.He returned to work as a hu-man resources consultantand is also a motivationalspeaker.Walsh’s full story is told in

his book Victor over Victim, published by Human andRousseau in 2003.

Children tuck into mouthfuls of pizzaJUANITA WILLIAMS

FAST fooddelivered to their doorbroughtsmiles to the faces of dozens of eager chil-dren at separate venues.

The children at theMarshMemorialHome,in Rondebosch, clustered around WaheedIsaacs, the owner of St Elmo’s, in BelvedereRoad, Claremont, as he handed out slices ofpizza on Thursday.Isaacs, who lives in Plumstead, says he

loves children and wanted to reach out to theneighbourhood by giving the children a treat.“I try to do as much as possible for children,”he said.Earlier that day the teamhadalsodelivered

pizzas to Girl’s Town, in Kenilworth, Lelie-bloem House, in Athlone, and Margaret’sHouse, in Lansdowne. It was the manager Lorinda Niewenhui-

zen’smotherMarietjie, who suggestedMarshMemorial Home should be included. Mari-etjie has hosted children from the home over

the years.Marsh Memorial manager Steven Mool-

man was delighted when Isaacs, Niewenhui-zen and Richard Farquahar rocked up with21 piping hot pizzas to hand out.He says 50 children live in a cottage system

at the home. Set in large, green fields, wherechildren can play safely and run about, thebuildings date back to the 1900s. “But theseold buildings need a lot of maintenancework,” he said. The home was started by the Reverend Ed-

ward Marsh and his wife Janie in 1901, origi-nally for orphans. Today it is a multiculturalchild and youth care centre, which offers ho-listic care in the form of youth developmentprogrammes, to ensure the emotional, physi-cal, spiritual and educationalwellbeing of thechildren. The home is supported by theMeth-odist Church.Moolman is keen to attract more host par-

ents to take the children for weekends andholidays. Call social worker Lira Greeff0 (021) 689 9301 between 08:30 and 16:00.

A woman’s worthSHE is woman, wife, mother, sister, aunt, friend. Matriarch.

Her names are endless, but what she repre-sents is the glue that binds family and friends.

Without her, worlds collide, families disin-tegrate, semblance of peace and cooperationdissimilate, siblings fight and grow apart.

She offers cohesion, a nurturing touch, ashoulder to cry on, soothing advice, a com-forting embrace.

‘She’ is a car, a boat, an aeroplane, but morethan an inanimate object, ‘she’ is MotherEarth. She breathes life and lets it grow – hersure hand ever present to guide, admonishand protect.

Womanhood is more than the spikes of herstiletto, the colour of her hair, the cup size ofher bra, her cooking skills.

Womanhood is defined beyond her physicaland professional abilities.

A woman who dwells in safety representsone who is the object of respect. A woman whois free to study and work is manifestation ofa free society. A woman who chooses to raiseher children and make a home earns her liv-ing.

What does gender equality mean? Do wom-en really want to be equal to men? And whodecides this? How is this equality deter-mined?

Gender equality transcends the borders ofincome. Earning power does not change howmen view women. Are they the weaker sex?Is there such a thing? Is this determined bywhether a woman can change the tyre of acar?

No.Is she any less of a woman if she can change

a tyre? And if she does it faster and with moreskill than a man, does she lose any of her femi-ninity?

Women’s Day on Thursday is a chance forall to examine their personal views of women.

Should she remain the persona society de-mands? Or, if she somehow ‘fails’, does thismake her less accepted as a human?

You decide.

Outraged byvandalismWHAT a completely irresponsibleeditorial, condoning the destruc-tion of public property by peoplewho have never contributed tobuilding anything.

This was organised and orches-trated by the ANC to try and sowdiscord in the Western Cape, andthe City is quite right to take themto court.

This is the best run province inthe country, so what is the com-plaint? Somebody isn’t gettingsomething for nothing.

It is disgraceful to portray pro-testers as outraged. I am outragedthat people think by destroyingpublic property – (which) I and oth-er taxpayers paid for – that this willimprove their lot.

I am outraged that most of myproperty taxes are diverted to build-ing infrastructure people only wantto destroy.

Tree thief with fetish strikes againTHIS is the third occasion our tree has been up-rooted outside our office.

Two weeks ago we planted another little tree,a rosemary plant and petunias, only to arriveat the office to find the little tree out of the potand placed on the tar alongside the pot.

We re-planted the poor thing and it was doingso well until we arrived at the office on Monday,to find that it was again removed.

This person is quite insane.

He or she left the rest of the plants, but seemsto have a fetish for the little purple flower tree.

We appeal to the sane side of this person, toplease stop doing this.

What it is proving? You are a “human” who likes uprooting and

killing little trees. Come on now – enough isenough!SUSAN BEARDWOODAnnette Laing Property Consultants, Plumstead

Your SMSes. Rental in the province is too expensive. It’sdifficult to open businesses, because the biggestexpense is rent – that’s why job creation is soslow.

. We need to stop being negative and believe, for once, that it is possible for things to stay“calm” as it is. We can believe and trust that Godhas already brought a change and He is faithfuland able to complete what He has started. Let’sshow compassion towards each other from to-day.

. Well done to our athletes for winning twogold medals in the pool. I am a proud South Afri-can.

. The City of Cape Town wants to value prop-erties – they do not own – every two years tomilk us homeowners “dry”, while they enjoymassive salary increases.

. Let those who’s properties fall under indi-gent grants pay their fair share of water usage, like in the case of electricity. Check on their in-come.

. Do we really wish to be informed by youreditor of her holiday stresses or vacation activi-ties? Boring and trite.
