GROOTE SCHUUR HOSPITAL Innovation to benefit patients GARY VAN DYK @gvdcapejazz T here’s a new sense of service delivery at Groote Schuur Hospital with some exciting new innovations in action at the facility. These innovations were celebrated at a special event last Tuesday (5 April) to high- light the impact that these projects have made to hospital employees and patients. The Innovation Programme was launched in October 2014 and was offered by the Ber- tha Centre for Social Innovation and Entre- preneurship (a specialised unit at UCT’s Graduate School of Business), the hospital’s facilities and management board as well as the UCT Faculty of Health Sciences. Over R1m was invested in the programme, the dedicated Innovation Hub and the em- ployee projects and tools. Ten projects were launched and over the programme period, two projects in particu- lar, the Time Machine and the Guide Pill Box, were both able to refine their innova- tions after the envisioned outcomes did not materialise. The Time Machine project dealt with em- ployee shifts that are often based on histori- cal arrangements, and top down attempts to change these were often met with resistance. Now there is a tool which allows employ- ees to design their own work arrangements by letting them see the impact their shifts have on the throughput rate of patients. The tool not only allowed health care workers to positively impact patient throughput, it also demonstrated that the use of an outdated patient booking system contributed to processing delays. This has now been addressed and results being monitored. Dr Wafeeqah Mohamed, a community ser- vice doctor, created the Guide Pill Box. For many doctors a common complaint is that patients do not understand the medica- tion they are on, nor when or how to take it. Mohamed explained that it acts as a medi- cation storage device, which also supports the education of patients about their chronic medication. Due to her tenacity and passion, the project has now received support from the UCT Faculty of Health Sciences and stu- dents participating in the Health Innovation and Design course. The students will be as- sisting Mohamed in piloting the Guide Pill Box prototype at Groot Schuur Hospital. Another interesting innovation is the ado- lescent-centered service design that was done by Dr Bianca Davidson of the Renal Unit. Adolescents with kidney failure, on di- alysis or awaiting transplant have to make substantial changes to their lives, at a time when they are already going through a tran- sition period. This project aims to redesign the way care is provided to adolescents in an outpatient setting by engaging patients to create the service that they need and want. The Resource Hub is another important innovation. Judy Wallace from the derma- tology department explained that when pa- tients are diagnosed with a chronic condi- tion, they are often unware of all the resour- ces available to them. “A walk-in resource centre that offers sup- port through online resources, books, and trained health navigators is the solution,” she said. “The centre enables patients and others to access information and support with regard to their health needs while in the environment of the hospital.” Hundreds of dog owners and their four-legged friends joined SPCA for the annual Purina Woefie Wandel held at D’Aria Wine Estate in Durbanville on Sunday 10 April. Scholarship to build peace

CHEVON BOOYSEN@ChevonBooysen

A mother’s mission to find her missingson has ended with a miracle – andPeople’s Post played a part in the fairy-

tale ending. The power of the press has been proven

after the story of a Grassy Park mother wholonged to meet her son “before I close myeyes”, was published last year. That wishhas been granted.

Betty Maritz (83) now has a constantsmile and says she is sleeping more peace-fully since she was reunited with her son.People’s Post previously reported on Mar-

itz’s plight to be reunited with her son after64 years after he was taken by a guardianMaritz lived withat the time(“Longing to seeson after 64years”, Tuesday25 August).

After the articlewas printed, Mar-itz said someonecontacted her onthe same day tomeet with her.

“That day a manand two womenpulled up at myhouse,” she says.

“At the time itwas obviously notconfirmed he wasmy son but whenthat man got out ofthe car, a feeling just came up inme and I just knew it had to be him,” Maritzsays.

She explains the trio then told her thatthey read the article and they suspected Jo-seph Josephs was her son “because I ex-plained the birthmark in the article”.

Asked what transpired during their firstmeeting and what made Josephs think thelong lost son could be him, Maritz says “hefell when he was younger and when he gothurt his guardian shouted ‘die is niemykindnie’ (This is not my child)”.

That stayed with him all the time and hein turn also had a longing to find out whohis real mother was.

“We then decided to do blood tests to con-firm if he was really my son. However, deepin my heart I just knew that I had finallyfound my son because he looks just likeme,” she says.

Three weeks passed after the blood tests

and then emotional news came to the familyconfirming Josephs is her son.

“Since then we have been in regular con-tact and they have been visiting me as well.I have a daughter-in-law as well as grand-children and great-grand-children. Theyare really very lovely people,” Maritzbeams.

Added to the trail of joyous events sincemeeting her son, Maritz celebrated her 83rdbirthday with her son and his family whenthey treated her to a surprise breakfast.

“I am so glad my search is over and sincemy son came back into my life, I have beenable to sleep easier. If it wasn’t for the helpof People’s Post I would not have been re-united with my son and that was my onlywish before I close my

eyes for eternity,”Maritz says.

Josephs says hecouldn’t be happi-er to be reunitedwith his birthmother.

He tells excited-ly how they de-cided to contactRachel – who as-sisted Maritzwith her search.

“The day thePeople’s Postcame out, Ifetched it myselfat the shop andsat reading qui-etly while my

wife was cooking. Icame across the story of Betty and somethings started to resonate with me especial-ly the birthmark description,” he says.

Josephs says he read the article quietlyby himself first before telling his wife aboutit. “She has always supported me in tryingto find my birth mother. She even encour-aged me to write to a TV show who reunitesfamilies. When I showed her the article shejust told me ‘daai is jou ma’. We then madecontact with her and visited the day after,”Josephs recalls.

He says when they arrived outside Mar-itz’s home, she came straight to him andheld him. Since their meeting Josephs sayshis family has unconditionally acceptedMaritz as part of the family.

“My children and grandchildren accepther whole-heartedly and they call her theirMa Betty. I can only thank God for makingthis all come together like this,” Josephsconcludes.

Reunited withson after article

Bettie Maritz had an urgent plea last year to

be reunited with her only child who was taken

away from her a day after giving birth.

Bettie Maritz celebrated her 83rd birthday on Saturday. Celebrations were held with her ‘new’family which includes Joseph Josephs family of four children and six grandchildren. Josephscontacted Maritz after reading an article last year pleading to be reunited with her lost sonand since then the two have been reunited. PHOTO: CHEVON BOOYSEN

The monetary battle for a betterPaediatric Intensive Care Unit

at Red Cross Hospital received amajor boost over the past month.

One month into a public appealto raise the last R10m for theR100m-plus expansion and up-grade of the unit and the R1m markhas just been surpassed.

The project will see significantlyimproved intensive care servicesdelivered to critically ill and in-jured children from in South Afri-ca and the rest of the African conti-nent.

Capacity will also be greatly in-creased, addressing the desperateneed for more beds to treat some ofthe country’s sickest little pa-tients.

With the lion share of the fund-ing already secured for the build-ing of this life-saving unit, the Chil-dren’s Hospital Trust, the officialfund-raisers for the hospital, hasmade an emotive appeal to the pub-lic to help them raise the finalR10m to complete the building.

R1 243 715m of this target hasnow been reached, so there is stilla way to go to reach the final targetof R10m by the end of June.

Currently the 22-bed PICU at thehospital is the largest ICU for chil-dren in Africa. It provides emer-gency care for critically ill or in-jured children from all over SouthAfrica as well as other Africancountries.

The demand is driven by the in-crease in surgery requirementsand escalations in detection of seri-ous illnesses. In essence, the de-

mands on this unit are higher thanits capacity to deliver.

“Thanks to the generosity of theSouth African community, we areslowly but surely inching our waytowards our R10m goal,” says Lou-ise Driver, CEO of the Children’sHospital Trust.

“This project will enable thislife-saving unit to help heal thou-sands of young children so we ap-peal to all of you to please donateto help us to complete the biggerand better ICU brand new ICU.Even a small donation can make ahuge difference.”

Construction on the unit beganin October 2015 and is expected tobe completed by October 2017. The22-bed facility will increase to 39bed spaces, and will include an ur-gently needed 10-bed High CareNeonatal Unit as well as isolationcubicles. The high care unit andthe isolation cubicles will ensure

optimal treatment through betterinfection control, which is criticalin ICU.

The expansion and upgrade willalso create more comfortable andsupportive spaces for parents aswell as breastfeeding mothers.Currently, family members haveno privacy or space between life-saving equipment as they sit vigilat their child’s side.

Increased space will also meanthat staff, who work very longhours saving lives in tough condi-tions, will have adequate supportfacilities.

The Children’s Hospital Trustworks in collaboration with theWestern Cape Government:Health. The provincial govern-ment will contribute R30m to-wards the ICU.V To contribute, visit www.childrenshospitaltrust.org.za for more information on theChildren’s Hospital Trust.
