TARREN-LEE HABELGAARN @LeeLaVidaLoca A botanical garden, concert venue and bungee jumping point are some of the draw- cards being planned to market Ath- lone as a tourism destination. Cape Town Tourism CEO Enver Duminy says the organisation greatly encourages any tourism- related route developments as long as they have the authenticity and input of the community at heart. “There are still too many untold stories in Cape Town that need to see the light of day. “For some, Athlone will have deep personal connections and for others it will be a new and interest- ing window into a world they had not previously known about,” he says. “In our experience, visitors are interested in the personal stories of a destination. If a tour merely points out landmarks from the window of a bus, it does not add to a visitor’s experience. The culture, cooking, religion and history of Athlone can all be very interesting if presented in an engaging and memorable way.” Ward councillor Suzette Little at a recent meeting discussed the de- velopment of a bungee jumping point. And while the plans are still in their inception stage, Little says the ward is a gem and holds heaps of potential. “The idea is to showcase the tourism opportunities and display our rich heritage,” she enthuses. Council recently hosted a tour group on a mock run through the streets of Bridgetown, Kewtown, Silvertown and the Athlone CBD. “The drive was well received and many of the group members want- ed to sleep over. We then realised we would need accommodation to make this a successful tourist des- tination,” Little says. She encourages homeowners to apply for permission to turn their homes into bed-and-breakfast es- tablishments to cash in on the plan. “This is a great opportunity for additional income and job crea- tion,” she insists. Unemployed local youth are cur- rently being trained as tour guides and are being taught about the ar- ea’s cultural history, arts players and recreational facilities. But while the benefits are end- less, locals are questioning wheth- er inroads will be made to improve community safety. Marco Esau says crime is an is- sue which needs to be addressed before tourists are pointed towards Athlone. “Even the people who live here are scared to go outside. The au- thorities need to make sure that the violence against residents is addressed first before going ahead with these plans,” he says. Rene Engel says crooks should not be allowed to stand in the way of economic development. “Our neighbourhood has been neglected for too long. I’m glad that the few bad elements don’t discour- age developers from bring their ideas to our doorsteps,” she says. “We have problems with vio- lence in our community and drug dealing is a concern on the Nantes, but it is up to us to change that. We don’t always have to wait for the police or council to make a differ- ence.” Athlone has also been named as one of the popular destinations for Muslim tourists. People’s Post last week reported that Athlone as well as Bo-Kaap and District Six form part of the central nodes for Islamic travellers (“City a magnet for Muslim tour- ists”, People’s Post, 19 June). According to Cape Town Tour- ism, local establishments are host- ing a number of Muslim travellers this month as many families relax before Ramadan starts. An initiative aimed at keeping the com-munity safe will soon be rolled out toanother gang-infested area in Cape

Town.Ceasefire, first introduced to Hanover

Park last year, will now be implemented inManenberg following an increase in gangviolence in the area.

The project is set to be implemented inthree stages, namely the baseline surveyand training of officials, followed by fullimplementation with the first stage set tokick off on 1 July.

JP Smith, Mayoral Committee memberfor Safety and Security, says they are eagerto take the step to safer streets in Manen-berg.

“We want to provide Manenberg with thefoundation for a package of interventionswhich will be described in a community ac-tion plan,” Smith says.

Ceasefire custodian for the HanoverPark initiative, Pastor Craven Engel, saysthey are ready to make a difference inManenberg. “We had meetings on Mondayand Tuesday to make sure the project takesoff,” Engel says.

“It is all set and we hope to have full im-plementation within three months.”

A custodian is yet to be appointed. With an allocated budget of R3.5m the

roll-out will see the training of rent-a-copsand outreach initiatives to allow for fullimplementation.

Manenberg police spokesperson Lieu-tenant Ian Bennett says they welcome theinitiative with open arms.

“Ceasefire will definitely assist us in re-

ducing violence and crime prevention asthey intervene on different levels,” Ben-nett says.

“They have already had great success inother areas and we look forward to havingtheir assistance in Manenberg.”

Smith confirms there has been a signifi-cant reduction in crime since January 2013with a total of 135 high-risk individuals and280 youth being assisted through a varietyof outreach programmes which has seen asignificant reduction in murder and at-tempted murder in Hanover Park.

Since its introduction Ceasefire has setout to tackle five key issues and will contin-ue to do so with the roll-out to Manenberg.

“The City aims to achieve this crime re-duction through violence interruption, outreach work, community mobilisation, public education and monitoring and eval-uation,” Smith mentions.

Bennett cautions that the task ahead willnot be easy.

“Stepping in to a new area is always achallenge. Intervening on turf and drug co-ordination is the easy part. When you have

youngsters shooting on instinct it is diffi-cult to go in and change their mindsets,”he says.

The initiative follows the introduction ofanother body set to combat gang violenceand crime in the area. With growing inter-est in the gang problems in Manenberg,Smith says, it is still up to the communityto get involved.

“The residents are still the biggest roleplayers in the initiative. We provide assist-ance but it will be up to them to make adifference,” he says.

Three suspected drug dens are operat-ing from the same road in Silvertown.

And while police have labelled An-thony Road a drug hotspot, homeownersare demanding a clean-up.

A resident, who spoke on condition of an-onymity, says the illegal activities at herneighbouring property is no secret.

“People buy and smoke their poison here. It’s just one big drug party next door,” sheseethes.

Their unwanted visitors are also pilfer-ing residents’ goods for a fix, the womancontinues.

“My clothes have been stolen from thewashing line and my husband’s gardeningequipment has disappeared. And it’s notjust our things that have vanished.”

Keith Johannes says a tough stance is re-quired to drive this ill from his community.

“Council and police need to stop withwarnings and visits to these people. Actionis what we want,” he says.

“Drugs are the reason for abuse, theft andgangsterism. People do anything to feedtheir habit. It is killing our children andcreatingwar zones in our communities,” hesays.

Athlone Police Station commander Colo-nel Krisjan Verwant confirms numerousarrests have been made for drug-related of-fences in Anthony Road.

“It is one of our hotspots at the moment. We receive many tip-offs and complaintsfrom residents about drug-related activitytaking place in this street,” he says.

“Wehave increasedour stopandsearchesin the area and conduct drug raids at leastonce every two weeks.”

Verwant says burglaries and other pettycrimes have also increased in the neigh-bourhood in recent months.

Mayoral Committee member for Safetyand Security JP Smith says the City of CapeTown is serious about combating drug ped-dling.

“Our officers are working with neigh-bourhood watches, community policing fo-rums and other partners to raise awarenessand address any suspicious activity,” hesays.

“In addition, the safety and security di-rectorate has an established Social HousingUnit which deals with complaints abouttenants who engage in illegal activitiesfrom City-owned properties. As soon as theunit receives a complaint, it is investigat-ed.”

Smith explains that once the allegationsabout illegal activity are confirmed, the de-tails are referred toMetro Police for furtherinvestigation and attention.

“If theoutcomeconfirms that of theSocialHousing Unit, an application is made tohave the tenants evicted because they havefailed to adhere to their lease agreement byengaging in illegal activity,” he says.

Athlone Community Policing Forumvice-chairperson Edward Doe confirms theorganisation and local neighbourhoodwatches are aware of drug-related problemsin Anthony Road.

“One of our drug high-flyers operatesfrom Anthony Road and residents have in-formed us of homes being used as drugdens,” he says.

“When we do patrols and convoys onweekends we usually go to Anthony Roadto make sure that everything is in order inthe street and that no illegal activity is tak-ing place.”

A local crime fighter, who also spoke oncondition of anonymity, says at a meetingbetweenpolice andneighbourhoodwatchesonTuesdaynight residents expressed graveconcern for the increased crime.

“Residents are tired and have threatenedto take vigilante action. The crime is justincreasing and the police are not doingenough to help the community they serve,”he says.

“Here are many drug dens operating inthe Silvertown and Bridgetown areas. It issad to see what’s happening in our commu-nities because the problem is not being re-solved. There are so many new drug densappearing. At the meeting people threat-ened to march to Athlone and Lansdownepolice stations if service does not improve.”

HOUSING: BENEFICIARIES SCREENED

Families finallyget a place tocall their ownTARRENLEE HABELGAARN

@LeeLaVidaLoca

More than 150 people will have theirown place to call home once theHazendal Infill Housing Project is

completed. The final screening session for benefici-

aries was held at Athlone Civic on Satur-day.

The City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Com-mittee member for Human Settlements Siy-abulela Mamkeli says this was one of sever-al sessions held to give the relevant appli-cants the opportunity to fill in housingapplication forms.

“The beneficiary selection process is wellunderway. A list of approved beneficiarieshas been made available and is on displayat the Athlone Housing Office. It is alsoavailable upon request at the Athlone Li-brary,” he says.

“A meeting with approved applicants isplanned for August and will be advertisedin the community newspapers.”

The construction of the Hazendal InfillHousing Project, which will provide hous-ing opportunities to 153 beneficiaries on theCity’s housing database, is in process.

“We are in the final stages of procuringthe project’s top structure contractor. Thecontractor is expected to be on site in ap-proximately two months,” Mamkeli says.

He was unable to provide further detailsabout the project at the time, saying “moreinformation will be disclosed after the ap-pointment of the top structure contractorand finalisation of the project’s pro-gramme”.

Hazendal Ratepayers’ Association chair-person Leslie Langenhoven says the organ-isation has been in many meetings withcouncil regarding residents’ disapproval ofthe housing development.

“We have made no secret of our feelingsand concerns for this new development. Now that it is in the final stages there isn’tmuch that we can do,” he says.

“We would just like to appeal to councilto keep the residents of Hazendal informedwith the rest of the process.

“There has been very little communica-tion in the past and just as this will be achange for those moving in the new homes,it will also be a change for current resi-dents.

“We will need recreational facilities to ac-commodate all the people in the area. Thekids don’t even have a park nearby at themoment these are all things that still needto be looked at.”

HEIDEVELD: WORKERS AND CONTRACTORS IN WAGE DISPUTE

Labour – bump in the roadTARRENLEE HABELGAARN

@LeeLaVidaLoca

Labourers working on the con-crete roads in Heidevelddowned tools in protest over

non-payment of overtime remu-neration.

On Monday, workers employedby the City of Cape Town’s Extend-ed Public Works Programme wenton strike to show their frustrationagainst outstanding money owedto them by Amandla Construction.

Workers claimed they had notbeen paid since March for moneythey were supposed to receive forworking overtime on public holi-days, weekends and during familyresponsibility leave.

Team leader Michael Absalom atthe time said they had numerousmeetings with management andwere tired of empty promises beingmade.

“We were told we would get paidfor working overtime but we arestill waiting to be paid. We haven’treceived a single cent since Febru-ary and every week we are told wewill get paid on Friday,” he said.

“We only get paid for the hourswe work but here isn’t enoughequipment for us to do our workproperly. Many days we go homewithout a penny because we wereunable to work. It isn’t our fault ifthere isn’t enough equipment andwe don’t even get paid for dayswhen it rains. No work, no pay is

how it works here.”Absalom said workers accepted

these conditions and only wantedwhat belongs to them.

“Sick notes are submitted but weare not paid. We told the directorsthat we want answers and if we didnot receive an answer in two hourswe would strike. We haven’t beenaddressed all day and if we don’tget paid today we will strike untilwe are paid.”

Worker Mishkaah Adriaansesaid they had been anticipating theextra money and have things theywould like to use the money for.

“It is almost Ramadan and theextra money will go a long way inhelping us to put food on the tableand buy something nice for thechildren. For many of us this is theonly income in the house and wedepend on it,” she said.

Samantha Jacobs agreed sayingpeople had budgeted for the moneyand had expenses.

“We just want them to be fair. Wework hard for the little we get. Most of us have worked as EPWPworkers before and never have weexperienced trouble with paymentbefore,” she said.

Site agent Dumisani Jongityalasaid the strike was nothing morethan miscommunication.

“Initially our contract with theCity of Cape Town regarding theExtended Public Works Pro-gramme did not include paymentfor public holidays. We have re-

cently, however, been informed inwriting by the council that we needto pay workers for overtime,” hesaid. “We subsequently had a meet-ing with workers and told them wewould pay them for the holidaysworked. We didn’t specify whichweek we would pay them and work-

ers assumed it would be that Fri-day after the meeting. We decidedit would make more sense to paythem this Friday because it is payweekend. It was impossible to paythem in the middle of the week.”

Jongityala said after meetingwith workers on Tuesday the mis-

understanding was cleared.“We will be paying workers this

Friday as well as a full days’ pay-ment for today. Workers returnedto work after the meeting. As withany construction site there is a spe-cific payment structure – workersare only paid for hours worked.”

LIQUOR APPLICATIONS: DENIED BY SUBCOUNCIL

No extendedtrading hoursSAMANTHA LEE

@Samantha_Lee121

Regulars will haveto stock up before18:00 after coun-

cillors voted to keepthree liquor storesclosed after currenttrading hours.Applications for ex-

tended trading hoursfrom stores inLansdowne, Crawfordand Athlone Industriawere put before Sub-council 17 for consider-ation at their recentmeeting. In his opening address, chairperson

George March mentioned that he recog-nised a trend but advised the councillors tokeep an open mind.“I want to ask councillors to apply their

minds fairly and sensitively when consid-ering these applications,” he said.TwoAromaDrop Inns and LiquorWorld,

have made applications to extend weekdaytrading from 18:00 to 20:00 and off-consump-tion trading on Sundays from 11:00 to 18:00.In their applications all three stores pro-

vided motivations for their decision.“With 90% of the client base finishing

work at at 17:30, the extended hours wouldallow us to cater for them at reduced pric-ing,” wrote Liquor World owner GerhardClements.A lawyer for Aroma Drop Inn Chris Bar-

ratt believes the prevention of sales on Sun-days are affecting crime and strengtheningillegal trade in the area.

Councillor LlewellynJordaan, who repre-sents ward 60 in the ab-sence of councillorAnthea Green, disa-greed and says the ap-plicants have not pro-vided sufficient rea-sons for wanting toextend hours.“Think about all the

religious organisationsin the area. The storeswant to satisfy consum-ersbut their consumersrepresent only a smallpart of the community.I move that we reject

both applications,” Jordaan said.In a similar fashion, councillor Junaid

Hoosain moved that the third applicationby Liquor World be rejected as well. After a short deliberation the decision

was taken to a vote and applications for allthree stores were unanimously rejected. But March says the ruling is not set in

stone. “Although we have rejected the ap-plications, the stores still have an opportu-nity to appeal our decision,” he says.Barratt says for them the way forward is

unclear. “We have not yet decidedwhat ourplan of action will be. When we receive allthe objectionswewill deliberate and decideif we will appeal the decision or not,” hesays. But forClements, there isnoother option.“We are running at a loss and customers

are not happy that we are closing early,” hetold People’s Post.“If we continue like this for another six

months we will have to close our doors.”

Theft is atough lessonfor collegeTARRENLEE HABELGAARN

@LeeLaVidaLoca

Construction of the Star InternationalCollege in Bridgetown is now goingfull-steam ahead despite vandalism

and theft.Thieves have been pocketing bricks,met-

al and plastic items from the TarentaalRoad site recently. The school has been forced to use extra

funds to cover the unplanned expenses.Star International College spokesperson

Gail van Niekerk says construction cameto a halt after thieves helped themselves tomaterials.“The theft paired with heavy rainfall has

resulted in a delay on the project,” she con-firms.“We are hopeful that everything will run

smoothly after winter and that we will beable to catch up as planned.”The private school will accommodate

children fromGrade R to secondary school-level, she says.“We think thiswill be a great opportunity

for the children of the area and provide awider curriculum that measures up to in-ternational standards.”Athlone police spokespersonSergeant Zi-

ta Norman confirms complaints of theft atthe site have been lodged.“In January, we received reports that

building materials were being stolen fromthe premises. Police do patrol the area, butwe can’t act as private security,” says Nor-man.“Acase of theft has beenopened for inves-

tigation, but no items have been recovered.Building sites are often targeted by crimi-nals so they can sell thematerial for scrap.”

BOKMAKERIE: RECYCLING PROJECT TAKES OFF

It’s time toturn the tideon dumpingTARRENLEE HABELGAARN

@LeeLaVidaLoca

A new recycling centre and dumpingcontainermight be residents’ solutionto illegal dumping in Bokmakerie.

Those living in and around 5th Avenuesay they are tired of “living in a pigsty”.Resident LillianAmos says the dirt never

seems to go away and she is tired of pickingup other people’s rubbish that blows overinto her yard.“Dumping is amajor problem inour area.

People have no respect for the environmentor other people. There is definitely a needfor a recycling container in the area but Ihope people will actually use it,” she says.“That is always the problem. Whether it

is new lights, a parkor recycling binswhen-everwe get something new someonewill al-ways steal or continue with old habits. Ihope people will actually use the recyclingfacilities and not just dump next to it.”Bokmakerie resident Aziza Kannemeyer

says they have attempted place food gar-dens on the dumping sites but were askedto remove them.“The two main dumping sites are on 8th

Avenue and the other in 5thAvenue. Peopledump everything from buildingmaterial tochairs and rubbish,” she says.“After asking for containers or a recy-

cling centre atmany publicmeetingswe de-cided to clear the 8th Avenue site andmakea vegetable garden. It was very successfuland stopped the dumping, but it is privateproperty and the owner asked us to removethe garden because they wanted to build.”Kannemeyer says months later there is

still no construction taking place and thedumping has returned to the 8th Avenuespot.“We will gladly welcome a container or

recycling centre because it is too expensiveformost residents to travel to oneof theCityof Cape Town’s dumping sites.”Ward councillor Suzette Little says it has

been a long process but plans to have a con-tainer placed in Bokmakierie is on thecards for the new financial year.“We are still in the process and have to

see where the best spot will be to place acontainer. We will also be adding recyclingbins. This is not a feasible long-term solu-tion and while I note that people can’t al-ways travel there there are other factors totake into account.”Mayoral Committee member for Utility

Services Ernest Sonnenberg says to ad-dress illegal dumping the City of CapeTown’s Solid Waste Management Depart-menthas appointed a service provider to in-form and educate residents and businessesby means of door-to-door interactions.

Industry Workshop Association (Miwa),says it is important to know exactly whatparts are being fitted to your vehicle foryour own safety, the good running of yourvehicle and for insurance purposes. He says there are three types of parts typi-

cally available to South Africans. OriginalEquipment Manufacturer (OEM), genericparts (non-OEM) and parts manufacturedwith no quality control measures in place(pirate parts).OEMs are usually available from your

car dealership’s service department andthey’re used as a direct replacement to theoriginal part that was fitted on your car onthe assembly line.Although these parts aremore expensive,

theyusually comewithawarranty and theyare stringently tested for quality.Non-OEMs or aftermarket parts are non-

branded and inmany case they are as good,or even better, than the OEM counterpart. Some vehicle brands have even started to

develop their own non-OEM lines as an ad-ditional income generator.“Many warranties require consumers to

use OEM parts and they would be voided ifapproved parts are not used,” says McMas-ter.“But this is not always the case, so check

with your insurance service provider if youwant to use non-OEM parts,” he continues.Additionally, some non-OEMpartsmight

not be a good physical fit for a specific vehi-cle, and using them could cause damage toyour vehicle if fitted incorrectly. However, McMaster points out that in

most instances, the non-OEM parts offergood, affordable quality, making them fa-vourable options for older models.“In fact, if it can be proven that the gener-

ic part is of the same quality as the OEMpart, many insurance companies them-selves ask repair shops to use these genericparts to lower costs,” he says.Pirate parts are the ‘cheap and nasty’ of-

fering and with these products there is noway of knowing what kind of quality youare getting. Some of these products are just as good

as the OEM parts, but others are extremelydangerous. They are cheaper because they cut cor-

ners and use poor quality materials and be-sides the potential damage to your vehicle, using these parts creates a very real physi-cal risk.If you receive a lower than expected

quote, don’t simply take it at facevalue, cau-tions McMaster. “Pirate parts are usuallyan inferior-quality forgery and they arenever a bargain, because the losses youwillincur are invariably higher than the sav-ings you thinkyouwillmake,” saysMcMas-ter.Not knowing which parts are being fitted

to your vehicle could have expensive anddangerous consequences.

Honda, Mazda, Toyota and Nissan are re-callingmillions of vehicles globally for de-fective airbags manufactured by supplierTakata that could possibly explode. No crashes have been reported related

to Monday 23 June recalls.Takata is a major manufacturer of air-

bags, seat belts, steering wheels and otherauto parts.InApril andMay last year,Takata’s cus-

tomers – led by Honda and Toyota – re-calledmore than fourmillion vehicles dueto the risk that defective air-bag inflators

could blow apart. Takata and Honda toldUS safety regulators the core of the prob-lem was how the explosive material usedto inflate Takata air-bags had been han-dled and processed from 2000 through2002.Honda South Africa cannot yet confirm

whether local models will be affected.Last year’s recalls involving Honda and

four other automakers were intended toclose the book on a problem that emergedin 2007 and had already been linked to twodeaths.Takata reported that the earlier recall

had not included all of the problem air-bags..

CRIME: ACCOMMODATION ‘DID NOT EXIST’

Scammed outof holiday plansin online ‘buy’CHEVON BOOYSEN

@ChevonBooysen

Online scamming is becoming a virtualnightmare as one holidaymakerfound out.

Desperate for some timeout and in searchof affordable holiday accommodation, Zari-ah de Wet started looking for places online.“I responded to an advertisement on [a

website] and booked a holiday home overthe Easter weekend. I spoke to a guy whoidentified himself,” she says.“I deposited an amount of R3 560 into a

Nedbank account and arrangements weremade to arrive on Thursday 18 April. Whenwe arrived at our destination we realisedthe address was not holiday accommoda-tion and, in fact, did not exist,” says an an-gry De Wet.The holiday home was advertised show-

ing photos of the property.Police spokesperson Constable Zandile

Marashula confirms that a case of fraudwas reported at the Mitchell’s Plain PoliceStation and the case is still under investiga-

tion. No suspects have been arrested for theincident.“We can confirm that a case of fraud was

reported on Friday 4 April. The complain-ant alleges she booked a holiday getawayand made payments for the reservation. The complainant later discovered that theplace does not exist,” Marashula says.De Wet has since tried to contact the per-

son she liaised with to make the reserva-tion. “They are still operating with thenumber I contacted them on, but they keepusing different names,” De Wet says.“It’s so frustrating that they can get away

with my hard-earned cash.”Sergeant Jerome Voegt from Mitchell’s

Plain police says consumers should be verywise when making purchases online.“Do not deposit money into an account

without referencing and checking that theproduct you’re purchasing is legitimate,”he says.Police urge the community to be more

alert of fraudulent internet purchases.“We encourage the community to report

such cyber crimes,” Marashula says.

Think twice before offering a “lost”mo-torist advice. The authorities are warning resi-

dents to be alert while unloading their gro-ceries or pulling out of their driveway.Athlone Police Station commander Colo-

nel Krisjan Verwant says robbers circlingan area while seemingly lost are scouting

for potential victims.“There has been a number of cases made

by Crawford and Belgravia residents whohave fallen victim to suspects using thismethod,” he says.Four men, operating from a silver Avan-

za, pull up to the home and try to grab thehomeowner’s attention, Verwant explains.“When residents then approach the men

to offer assistance, they are attacked androbbed,” he says.

“Stolen items include groceries and oth-er personal items taken from the boot. They have also stolen cars and taken hand-bags. Although we are not aware of any in-cidents where the suspects have enteredthe house, we urge residents to be alert.”Verwant warns homeowners to avoid in-

teracting with people they don’t know, nomatter how good their intentions.“If you are alone, don’t make conversa-

tion. Get into your house or car as fast and

possible.”Crawford Civic Association chairperson

Graham Collison says property crime inthe area is a growing concern.“Police need to increase their visibility

and be involved in more active patrols.Just sitting in the van doesn’t help,” he in-sists. Businesses are also being targeted bycrooks, Collison adds.“We are experiencing a lot of small cafes

and corner stores being robbed.”

SARS: WARNING TO BE VIGILANT

Tax return email scam alertDESIREÉ RORKE

@dezzierorke

With the tax return filing date loo-ming closer, countless taxpayershave fallen victim to an elaborate

scam.Promising a believable windfall, it is by

no means only the ignorant who have fal-len for it.Unsuspecting taxpayers receive an

email from “Sars eFiling Alert”, infor-

ming them that they have received a taxcredit payment into their bankaccounts bySars E-filing.This amount could range from anything

from R2000 to R8000, making it in range ofthe average annual tax return payout. The person is then prompted to click on

a link in order to “confirm online epay-ment”, and it is on this link where the vic-tim is very cleverly deceived to give outtheir banking details.Once this is done, the scammers are

equipped with the necessary informationto steal funds from your account at any ti-me.The South African Revenue Service

(Sars) is aware of this scam and is current-ly investigating it. They warns taxpayersto be extra vigilant.“Many taxpayers have already been

scammedand countless othershas telepho-ned to enquire about this email,” says aspokesperson at Sars who warns tax pay-ers not to respond to this email.

“The particular email address do not be-long to us andSarswill never prompt anyo-ne, even E-filers, to provide banking de-tails. If a payment is to be made by us, wewill automatically deposit it into yourbank account,” he says.“In addition, tax return filing date only

opens on 1 July, and no return payoutscould have been made yet,” he adds.Sars urges taxpayers to call their contact

centre on 0800 007 277, if they’re unsureabout Sars-related payments.

Cape Town’s two brightest baseball tal-ents are set to test themselves againstthe world’s best when they represent

South Africa at the 15 and under BaseballWorld Cup next month.

Bridgetown’s Lance Gordon and Silver-town’s Keino Davids were called up to thenational team after impressing for WesternProvince. The two are hard at work, train-ingwith theotherCape-basednational teammembers.

Although the duo admits SA is not a bigbaseball nation, they will be heading to theWorld Cup aiming to cause upsets.

“Everyone is going to underestimate us,so when we arrive in Mexico we can showthem South Africans can play the game,”Davids says.

“We work hard and will always try to doour best.”

Gordon and Davids have been membersof Athlone Athletics Baseball Club formorethan seven years.

Both were immediately hooked on thesport after their first time on the diamondand neither has looked back since.

Belgravia High School pupil Davids rep-resented WP both last and this year, whileGroote Schuur High’s Gordon has been inthe WP side every year since 2009, exceptin 2012.

Gordon, first choice catcher at A’s, be-lieves it was his batting that resulted in hisnational call up.

“I’m quite versatile, so I can play any-where the coach wants me to, while still do-ing well,” he says.

“I also hit with power and bring lots ofspirit to the team.”

He further attributes his balling ability isa result of hard work, not only the talent he

inherited from his father.During the baseball season Davids and

Gordon train twice a week, for 90 minutes, and have been doing so with the nationalside as well.

Training is set to step-up in intensity inthe coming days, with two to three-hourlong national team training sessions eachday during the school holidays.

While Davids and Gordon will be givingtheir all at training, theywill each also needto raise R20 000 to fund the trip.

Gordon will host a fundraising party atthe Athlone A’s clubhouse on Saturday 28June and Davids will also host one in thenear future (date to be confirmed).

The International Baseball Fedaration15U World Cup will take place from Thurs-day 31 July toSunday 10August in theMexi-can towns of Mazatlán and Culiacan.V To purchase tickets or assist the players to partici-pate in the World Cup, phone Gordon’s father on084 605 4500 or Davids’ grandmother on079 756 5057.
