Empowering with sportMore than 80 schoolchildren in Heideveld

were taught how to use sport for the good oftheir communities when representatives

from Laureus visited the area last week.The Youth Empowerment through Sport Pro-

gramme (Yes) was launched by Laureus in 2012 andfocuses on equipping youth with the technical, vo-cational, entrepreneurship and life skills needed todevelop sustainable livelihoods.

The first phase of the Yes programme kicked offlast week and a special project visit was hosted onThursday 5 May at one of the Laureus funded localprojects – Great Commission United (GCU). GCUis a football and basketball orientated project thataims to keep young people from Heideveld and sur-rounding areas away from gangs and crime andplugged into positive influences and aspirations.GCU recognises that the reversal of gang cultureand poverty begins at grassroots level.

The first phase of the Yes programme is whereall the successful candidates from their respectiveprogrammes nationally and internationally willget together for a week packed with accredited andnon-accredited training; most importantly withonce in a lifetime experiences that will motivateand challenge them in understanding their purposein order to achieve their goals as individuals.

The project strives to enrich the children’s lifeexperience through soccer and basketball and to ig-nite a desire of wanting more from their lives.

The program targets students who leave school,aged 18 to 25, with particular attention given toyoung people who are passionate about sport andthe upliftment of the communities they are in.Apart from receiving support to serve as positivechange agents in their respective communities, theparticipants also receive job training and place-ment services.

the inaugural Relay Against Racism racehas been extended to Friday 27 May.

Due to great interest in the family FunWalk, the organisers, Cycle of Life, have de-cided to extend the closing date for entries.

More importantly, the event aims to bringtogether people from all walks of life to pro-mote a better understanding and trust be-tween various communities.

The 2016 edition of the Slave Route Chal-lenge attracted about 9000 runners – eachrunning in honour of a a slave whosename has been recorded on a Column ofRemembrance at the Iziko Slave Lodge –to the streets of Cape Town on Sunday 8May.

The route passed various landmarks inthe city linked to slave heritage, includ-ing the Castle of Good Hope, the Whip-ping Post, the Old Slave Church, the IzikoSlave Lodge and the Slave Tree Plague.

Runners on the 10 and 21km routes alsohad to make their way up the renowned“Koesister Hill” in Penz Street. Uponsummitting the hill, each runner was of-fered a traditional Cape Malay koesister.

City readies itselffor winterThe City of Cape Town has set the wheels

inmotion for their winter readiness planto mitigate the impact of adverse weatherconditions prevalent between May and Sep-tember.The City’s executive mayor, Patricia de

Lille, Mayoral committeemembers and Cityofficials visited a stormwater canal in Vy-gieskraal onThursday lastweek tohighlighthow illegal dumping adds an unnecessarystrain on infrastructure and has an adverseeffect on vulnerable communities and theCity’s flood mitigation measures.The City spends more than R350m to clear

illegally dumpedwaste across the citywhichhas various negative impacts on residentsand the environment.Each year, in preparing for the rainy sea-

son, a multi-departmental team in the Citycompile a winter readiness plan.“As a well-run and caring City, we priori-

tise operations and provide relief aid to ourmost vulnerable communities,” states DeLille.In order to ensure that the City responds

as effectively and as swiftly as possible, ateam led by theCity’s Disaster RiskManage-ment (DRM) Centre coordinates the multi-faceted winter readiness plan, she says.“Our winter readiness measures include

ongoing education andawareness in inform-al settlements to educate residents on howto minimise the risk of flooding.”The DRM Centre has made arrangements

with disaster relief partners (non-govern-mental organisations) who can provide hu-manitarian aid to people in distress and dis-

comfort as a result of flooding and stormdamage.However, each year, the City also reports

that there are still too many cases when il-legal dumping caused by residents andcompanies leads to clogging of and damageto the stormwater infrastructure network.This affects the ability of the system todrain rain water and often leads to flood-ing, which affects vulnerable communi-ties.People’s Post reported earlier this year

that the Blomvlei canal, which flowsthrough Vygieskraal, was at the centre ofa major stink in January after beingcloggedupwith excess pollution during thefestive period (“City to unmask stench”, 26January).“For several years, I have been calling on

residents to work with us to stop illegaldumping while we have rolled out cam-paigns to educate residents about the dev-astating and far-reaching impact that ille-gal dumping has on our critical infrastruc-ture and especially on communities andthe environment,” says De Lille.Apart from clearing the stormwater net-

work, the City says that their winter readi-ness plan details how the various depart-ments will cooperate and liaise with eachother to deal with eventualities and possi-ble flood damage during thewetwinter sea-son.TheCity has identified 34 high-risk areas

and has prioritised these areas, which in-clude informal settlements in Philippi, Gu-gulethu and Strand.

Two nabbed in abalone bustTwo suspects have been nabbed after po-lice made a R2m abalone bust in Rondeb-osch East last week.Lansdowne police spokesperson Ser-

geant Nkululeko Mnyaka says the men,aged 27 and 49, were apprehended in Riv-ersdale Road. “Two men were arrestedfor possession of excessive [quantities of]perlemoen with an estimated value ofR2m,” Mnyaka says.“Sergeant Edwonne Viljoen and his

team from theBishopLavis Crime Intelli-genceUnit followedupon information forthe delivery of abalone in RiversdaleRoad.”Mnyaka says police officials spotted a

white bakkie in the street. The suspectsthen made a U-turn with the bakkie afterseeing that it had been followed.The suspects tried to evade arrest but

The Athlone police station has seen an in-creased in false cases relating to refuse bins.“Certain people come to the charge office

to report that their refuse bins were stolen.Later we find that they were making falsecases,” says Colonel Clive Nicholas, actingcommander for Athlone Police Station.

As a result these refuse bins are in turnused for criminal activities, namely to trans-port stolen goods, Nicholas says.“To prevent this from continuing, all resi-

dents of Athlone are requested that whentheir bins are stolen, they should bring proofof addresswith rates papers in order tomini-mise the chances of this continuing. This of-fice wants to apologise for any inconven-ience,” he says.

Women pave way for projectA group of women in Manenberg are play-

ing an integral role behind the scenes toensure that the construction of 587 subsi-dised units goes ahead without a hitch.The City of Cape Town says the Manen-

berg infill housing project is expected tocommence soon and it is expected to takearound three years to complete.The progress of the project will, however,

depend strongly on the support from thecommunity and the innovative and deter-mined approaches deployed in seeing the

project through.“This area is incrediblyvolatile, largely as

a result of the high levels of gangsterism anddrug-related crime,” says Benedicta vanMinnen, the City’s mayoral committeemember for human settlements.“It is therefore not just a simple task of

building subsidised units. We are fullyaware that we will face some hardships anduphill battles along the way because of thevolatility of this area but we will not be de-terred.”

She says that additional measures will beput in place, including the employment of alocal neighbourhood watch, and provisionhas been made for the erection of perimeterfencing in an effort to secure the site.“We are engaging with local leaders in the

area in an attempt tomobilise the communi-ty behind the project. Success will only beachieved if we work together.One of our greatest advantages going for-

wardwill alsobe the strong leadershipof ourall-female project steering committee andwe thank them for the role that they haveplayed already,” says Van Minnen.

Another unique feature of this project,which aims to drive community ownership,is the mural initiative. Unemployed youthsare participating in a mosaic art trainingproject which is currently under way.This four-month training project aims to

provide unemployed youthwith an opportu-nity to learn a skill that they can use to cre-ate opportunities for themselves.The large-scale murals will eventually be

applied to the housing units that face ontoGovan Mbeki Drive.The murals celebrate the heritage of Ma-

nenberg.

Residents of Sherwood Park had “Free-dom Day” patrol to consult with “perpe-trators building up squatter camps andmaking themselves at home” on vacantplots in the neighbourhood.“We consulted with two vacant plots;

After making ourgrievancesknown to them, theyacceptedour demands that we do not want themin our area and we pertinently advisedthat what they are doing is erroneous to-wards our community,” says ShahiedFrancis, deputy chairperson for theSherwood Park ratepayers association.He says that the vagrants also indulge

in gangsterism, drugs, prostitution andmalefaction the area.Francis claims that the residents of

SherwoodParkwerenot assisted in theirpatrol fromthe local lawenforcement au-thorities, despite contacting local policeand metro police.Lieutenant Ian Bennett, spokesperson

for Manenberg police, says neighbour-hood watch patrols are to support polic-ing.“It must not be something where they

demand or expect extra deployment inthe area. If they wanted a special opera-tion it can be arranged,” he states.Bennett says local organisations must

build up trust with the neighbours andthen create good policing opportunities.“Where community have identified

problematic areas the police will dealwith actual policing,” Bennett adds.The committee however are pleased to

A man has been arrested for the posses-sion of an unlicensed firearm and am-

munition in Manenberg on Thursday 5May.The 23-year-old suspect was cornered by

police deployed within the area as part ofextra deployment after it was deemed thathe was acting suspiciously in the earlyhours of Thursday morning.The suspect initially ran after police ap-

proached him as it appeared hewas holdinga firearm in his hand concealed in the frontof his pants.Once themanwas cornered, police confis-

cated the firearm with seven live rounds ofammunition.A case of possession of an illegal and unli-

censed firearm and ammunition wasopened for investigation.Meanwhile, in a separate incident, two

menwerearrestedonTuesday 3 May for the

possession of stolen property.According to Lieutenant Ian Bennett,

spokesperson forManenberg police station,tho men were aged 21 and 24 respectively.Bennett stated police patrolling the area

saw two men on a scooter riding down Ma-nenberg Avenue.They stopped the men and did a routine

check. After doing the necessary enquiriesthey discovered that the scooterwas report-ed stolen in a Cape Town case.Both men were brought in for question-

ing and as following this they were unableto give a fair account on how they got thescooter, and were charged as a result.They were due to appear in the Athlone

Stolen property bust

A man, arrested on a charge of recklessand negligent driving, has been foundguilty, after a two year court case.The man was arrested in June 2014 in

Athlone after City of Cape Town officerschased him down during an illegal streetrace.The magistrate handed down a sen-

tence of R3000 or 30 days imprisonment,plus a further six months direct impris-onment suspended for five years on con-dition that the accused is not foundguilty of the same offence during the pe-riod of suspension. His licence has alsobeen revoked for a six-month period.

“I amvery satisfiedby this outcomebe-cause, if nothing else, it shows that thereare consequences for motorists who con-tinue tousepublic roads for their person-al amusement,” says JP Smith, the City’sMayco member for safety and security.In an operation focusing on illegal

street racing on Sunday 1 May, theCity’sTraffic Service arrested three motoristsfor reckless and negligent driving andthree others for drunk driving. Officersrecorded an additional 2149 transgres-sions, including a motorist who wasclocked doing 162km/h on FW De KlerkBoulevard.

“All dressed up and nowhere to go” – acommon phrase that many of us mayhave heard at least once or twicethroughout our lives.

A phrase that got me thinking aboutdisappointment.

Why? You may ask with an elementof confusion.

Well it started with a few new outfits,gorgeous shoes and two tickets to a tripanticipated for more than a year.

You get all dressed up, you get excitedand then, boom your plans get can-celled. Then you sit: All dressed up withnowhere to go.

But on that note, where did thisphrase come from and why is it so loose-ly used?

My grandmother said something in-teresting to me once that has stuck withme ever since.

She said: “Don’t wear your bestclothes during the week because youwill never look good when you go out.”

But who do we dress for?Ourselves? Our partners? Our

friends? Or for the average Joe on thestreet?

Some, like myself, dress according totheir mood.

When I don’t feel like putting any ef-fort in, jeans or trackpants work fine.But when I feel like putting on a nicedress, I’m sure people look at me and

think, “Why is she so dressed up? Whereis she going?”.

It makes me wonder why there is anaccepted notion that you are not allowedto look good no matter the occasion.

I suppose it also has to fit within dresscode confines, but even so, who set thestandard for what we should dress likeand when we are allowed to wear niceclothing?

The same goes for the words mygrandmother spoke. Those are idealsthat have been imprinted in the mind-sets of generations while growing up.

I say it is time to change that. Weshould have the freedom to dress theway we feel.

As a fashion lover, I find clothing asan expression of moods, feelings andemotion – so why should you not wantto use it as an outlet to show the worldwho you are?

Besides, dressing well makes you feelgood and gives you confidence. So whoare these people that don’t want us to bethe best versions of ourselves?

For whatever reason you are dressedup ladies and gents, rock your look.Even if you have nowhere to go.

But if you are home and all dressedup, get up, make some plans and showthat look off. If not and you just want tolook good in front of the TV, no judge-ment.

But remember, good clothing andgood style is made to be admired.

I treated my mom to the concert andwe expected to be there for about twohours max. Well, that hall reverberatedfor four hours, it bounced, it rocked, itraised the roof, all while sitting in yourseat – we were in constant rockingmotion, our seats were moving all thetime.

My mom is 84-years-old and we partied’til midnight and so enjoyed the People’sPost concert. The whole night my momjust beamed, laughed with joy, clappedher hands, tapped her feet. What afantastic concert, what a responsiveaudience, what talented and beautifulSouth African women we listened to, andto top it all, the most incredible band –what a super-duper night it was. Thankyou for making our Mother’s Day outing/night so special.

Williams flies SAflag in MalaysiaQari Gaarieth Williams has flown the flag

for South Africa at the International Al-Quran Recital and Memorising Assem-

bly in Kuala Lumpur last week.For more than a half century, Malaysia

has been the host of the world’s oldest AlQuran recital assembly.The 2016 event welcomed the 58th edition

of the mega event, which gathers interna-tionally renowned reciters toKuala Lumpurevery year.Williams has won the South African Na-

tional Qirah competition in both 2005 and2008, and has also participated in interna-tional Quran competitions in both Iran andEgypt.“All praise is due toAllah,my parents,my

teachers and my family who supports me inall my endeavours. I amhonoured and excit-ed to participate in this illustrious eventwhich is the oldest and biggest event of itskind in the world,” says Williams.A prerequisite for this particular Malay-

sian competition is to apply the Quran me-lodies known as maqamaat in a 10-minute,slow-paced, rhythmic andmelodious recital.All rules of tajweed must be adhered to andjudges also look at where the reciter stopsand continueswithin verses, so as to not dis-tort itsmeaning. TheQuran portion to be re-cited is given to the reciter on the same daythat he/she is due to recite it in public. Prep-aration time therefore is minimal. “Thecountries who have consistently won thiscompetition over the years since its incep-tion are Malaysia, Indonesia, Egypt andIran. I humbly request dua from all, that Al-lah grants me the strength to represent ourcountry to the best of my ability, Insha Al-lah,” adds Williams.Williams started reciting the Quran at a

very young age; having as his first Quranteacher Sheikh Ganief Moos of Wynberg.

He later graduated fromDarul UloomZak-ariya in Johannesburg where he completedhis hifth under Hafith Farooq Mansoor Sa-hib who currently heads up the Hifth Schoolat Darul Uloom Zakariya.At the age of 16, shortly after his return

from Johannesburg, young Williams’ fa-ther, NaseemWilliams, his role model, dieddue to sudden illness.Williams’ mother, who was very dear to

his heart and alwaysmotivated him to learnQuran, passed away in 2013. He taught hifthand led Taraweeh prayers for a number ofyears at Surrey EstateMasjid under the gui-dance of Sheikh Irfaan Abrahams. Thereaft-er he studied tajweed andmastered themaq-amaat guided by Sheikh Ismail Londt.In 2008 he was invited to lead Taraweeh

prayers in Mauritius and in Turkey in 2014.

Priority crimes identifiedPolice have arrested 341 people and con-fiscated R40 000 worth of drugs duringcrime prevention operations in theNyan-ga Cluster between Friday 29 April andFriday 6 May.Added to that, 159 drug houses were

search resulting in 203 people being ar-rested.Drugs were confiscated, including 41

units heroine, 246 units tik, 172 mandraxtablets and 2867 grams of dagga.Police also executed 96 shebeen opera-

tions, arresting 21 people on charges ofcontravening the Liquor Act. In total1103F of alcohol were confiscated.According toManenberg police spokes-

person Lieutenant Ian Bennett, police inthe area remained focused on gang activi-ty and identified priority crimes whichwere intelligence driven, within the clus-ter precinct, under the commandofMajorGeneral Vincent Beaton.“The precinct was saturated with addi-

tional police forces aswell as external for-ces, which included Metro Police and the

Law Enforcement officers from the stabi-lisation unit,” says Bennett.Forces are deployed on a rotational ba-

sis which ensures that the visibility re-mains and is sustained throughout thehigh density operational period.During these crime prevention strate-

gies, of which stop and searches formeda part, six firearms were confiscated andsix people arrested for the illegal posses-sion of these firearms across the clusterprecinct.Beaton commends the police and other

Arrests for illegal firearmsA 29-year-old man was arrested for the pos-session of unlicensed firearm and ammuni-tion on Friday 6 May.The suspect was arrested in Jacobs Street

after police followed up on information onan illegal firearm.Police could not find anything when

searching the premises, but took the ownerin for question.Following his interrogation, new informa-

tion led police to another address where thefirearm was buried. The firearm was thendug out from behind the shack.In another incident on Friday, a 44-year-

old man was arrested for the possession ofan unlicensed firearm and 39 rounds of am-

munition.Police deployed during Operation Combat

in Manenberg were busy with high densitypatrols when they received a tip-off.They went to an address in Cockscomb

Crescent inHeideveld,where they sawa sus-picious person sitting on the porch.They searched him and found a pistol in

his possession along with the 39 rounds ofammunitionwhichwas hidden in the house.The 44-year-oldmanwas arrested andwill

amatch-winning performance thathad the partisan crowd on edge inthe Mr. Price Foundation HighSchools Soccer League.The growing pains of the team,

affectionately known as the “SeaRobbers”, saw them finish at thebottom of the 2015 league champi-onship.But the struggles of the past did

will be packing their bags for a trip tothe City of Roses to compete for promo-

tion to the National First Division (NFD).The week-long national play-offs take

place from Monday 6 to Sunday 12 June inBloemfontein.
