for this fun ‘get-to-know-you’

activity.

Each cell is filled with a descriptor like someone who plays an

instrument or youngest child in the family. You must find a

person who matches the description for each square and have

them sign your bingo cards.

Our mission is now your mission too...

We bridge cultural and political borders through education and

exchange, making the world a better place for future

generations. You are now a part of People to People Ambassador

Programs’ history…

The People to People movement dates back more than half a

century to its founding by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in

1956. Eisenhower was acting on his firm belief that direct

interaction between ordinary citizens around the world can

promote cultural understanding and world peace. That proud

legacy of hope lives on in People to People Ambassador

Programs on seven continents.

Before Dwight D. Eisenhower became president of the United States of America, he was the Allied Commander in Europe during World War II. The memories of warfare would haunt Eisenhower for the rest of his life. During his presidency, the United States and the Soviet Union were waging a Cold War and a nuclear arms race which led to fear, suspicion, and misunderstanding between the two nations.

“I believe the people want peace, indeed, I believe that they want peace so badly that the governments will just have to step aside and let them have it.”

Dwight D. Eisenhower in a British Radio Address

Background of People to People

Page 7: PEOPLE TO PEOPLE AMBASSADOR PROGRAMS Orientation Meeting One.

People to People represents the culmination of President Eisenhower’s lifelong crusade for world peace. Eisenhower felt very strongly that everyday citizens of the world wanted peace and could attain it much more effectively without government interference. Eisenhower felt that face-to-face contact through various cultural activities, sports, and the arts would form enduring friendships among people of all cultures. As citizens interact with their peers from other nations by coming into each other’s homes, attending each others’ schools, and competing against one another in friendly contests of athletic skill, they will learn to appreciate each other and eradicate many misconceptions. As Student Ambassadors, you are part of that vision.
