Oxymoron - an apparent contradiction

Works of merit:Romans 4:2, For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. 3 For what does the scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness.” 4 Now to one who works, wages are not reckoned as a gift but as something due. 5 But to one who without works trusts him who justifies the ungodly, such faith is reckoned as righteousness. 6 So also David speaks of the blessedness of those to whom God reckons righteousness apart from works:

Works of faith:James 2:21 Was not our ancestor Abraham justified by works when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? 22 You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was brought to completion by the works. 23 Thus the scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness,” and he was called the friend of God. 24 You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone.


By Works of merit:1. We can’t save ourselves,2. We can’t justify ourselves3. We can’t merit,4. We can’t earn,5. We don’t deserve.

By Works of faith:1. Will save us,2. Will justify us3. Still don’t merit,4. Still don’t earn5. Still don’t deserve

Works of merit: 1. Can’t do to be saved 2. Can’t do to justify 3. Can’t do to merit 4. Can’t do to earn 5. Don’t do to deserve

Works of faith: 1. Must do to be saved. 2. Faith + work will justify. 3. Still don’t earn. 4. Still can’t merit. 5. Still don’t deserve.

Works of faith:Must do to be saved.


John 6:28, “Then they said to him, ‘What must we do to perform the works of God?’ 29 Jesus answered them, ‘This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent.’”

And without faith it is impossible to please Him, Heb. 11:6a


John 8:24, “Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.”• John 6:29, “…the work of

God…”




Luke 13:3 No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish as they did.




Romans 10:9, “that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; 10 for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.




Acts 2:38 “Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” Paul believed but he had to be baptized, Acts 22:16

I’m a faithful Christian, I go to church Sunday morning, Sunday evening and Wednesday night and I give. I do those four and no more

1. Works of faith as defined by, James 2:24

d. Faith apart from works is useless, v20

f. Not justified by works only or faith only, v24

c. We can show faith by our works, 18

e. Abraham & Rahab justified by works, vs 21 & 25

Works we must do to be saved .

Why are works needed?

a. Peter thought so, Matthew 26:33 and 35

b. All the Apostles thought so, Mark 14: 31

1. Me may think we have a saving faith, but it may be a week faith.

c. testing of your faith, James 1:2-4

d. fiery trial…to test you, 1 Peter 4:12

Conclusion:

We’re saved byworks of faith!

Works do not merit salvation works demonstrate the merit

(genuineness) of our faith.

We’re not saved by works of merit!
