The assignment of spending in 2010

On the right you can read personal experiences from the perspective of the end-user, it shows what impact your donations have made…

St. Rombo Kenya: Fr. Joseph BuzabaryahoLecturer on the APJYT Technical School

‘I am very happy with the donation the foundation KICI has made to us, allowing us to build an additional classroom. Our school children come from the poorest slums of Nairobi, Kenia. Money for a proper high school education is often missing. With the surrounding production firms we arranged that the kids can do an internship there. They acquire skills like woodworking, mechanics, electronics, ICT and tailoring.’

Funcare4kids: Fenna SuikerChild, 10 years, participant to the Funday

‘My mommy has a serious illness and she has little time to spend on me. I also can’t play sports because my mom can’t take us to the sport hall. But this funday is really a lot of fun!! During the previous funday I made new friends and we are in the same group again. We all did magic tricks, juggled and I even did some rope dancing. I won’t ever forget this day, it was awesome!’

Fonds Gehandicaptensport:Slightly disabled sledge hockey player

‘This sport is awesome because I can still play it despite my disability. Sledge hockey is suitable for all ages with a slightly/heavy disability and/or chronicle conditions. Every week I play sledge hockey with pleasure. As a team my team is improving a lot and on tournaments we perform better every time!’

‘Normally I am a teacher on this school in Rwanda. St. Right to Play approached us with their sport and play programs. I just finished my course by St. Right to Play as a coach. The course was professionally structured in which the kids are a central topic. You can teach children a lot through sports, that information was new to me! For example you can educate children on health issues, respect for each other and working together in a playful way. This offers children self confidence and makes them able to protect themselves.

Mesics FoundationTimau, Meru, Kenia – Poshomill (corn mill) Chairlady Women group Timau:‘Our dream is finally realized with this poshomill, before every woman in the women group in Timau had to walk for kilometers to grind the corn. Nowadays every woman can do that in the centre of the parish in Timau. It makes life more efficient for the women, who can now spend more time on their children and the sale of the corn. Over a 100 women were reached including their entire families.’

St. Mariëtte’s Child CareMarjo van Dijck, lives in Ghana

‘In 2006 my husband and I started the orphanage Hanukkah in Ghana. In the neighborhood there is no medical post. With the help of KICI we now have a building on the grounds that offer medical assistance. Medicines, fairly priced, can also be purchased at this post. You notice that the local population is very happy with the medical assistance. The people are extremely grateful.’

Customer food bank Waalre

‘My life has not been easy and financial-wise I don’t have much to live on. Sometimes it is really hard to stay positive. The fact that I can get food packages at the food bank is reassuring. Also because the food bank has many contacts that I can go to, for example help for debt problems or legal issues. I hope I will be able to become independent as soon as possible. KICI supports the food bank with second hand clothes, I find this a really good initiative.’

Ten schools were approached with all minimally twenty teachers in a district in Kampala. The schools will take initiative in the purchase in bulks; the teachers will pay for the lamp in three to six terms via for example a percentage of their salary. After three to six months the teachers are the proud owners of these lamps and they will then be able to do evening work with proper lighting without having to pay for kerosene. Moreover the teachers will be able to charge phones with the instrument, which means significant savings and even a small additional income if they charge third parties for charging their phones on the machine.

In the year 2006 the biggest weaving mill of Eastern Africa, Spinners & Spinners, and KICI decided to created a great school next to the factory of Spinners&Spinners. This school is named Matopeni, the translation is ‘mud’. The origin of the name lies with a couple of old buildings that were positioned on muddy ground. In 2010 we are proud to say the project is completed and that it is a great school. Why? One of the acknowledgements the school has received so far is a price, for being the school with most care towards environment and surroundings. The school consists out of a kindergarten, primary school and a high school.

Because a neighborhood with dynamism is a neighborhood that is alive, it’s a neighborhood where people meet and exclusion does not exist. It is a neighborhood in which everybody feels at home and allows people to interact and introduce each other with their cultures and backgrounds. An area in which people help each other and friendships arise. KICI contributes to these activities that promote social cohesion and increases a person’s independence. The donation made by KICI is used to organize various activities in multiple Resto’s in the country.

This way various interested individuals learn what is going on in the neighborhood it also offers them the opportunity to share information with regards to how they can help. Individuals are being encouraged to possibly enter into a course, become a member of a club or to participate in searching for (volunteer) work. Resto VanHarte offers these people new opportunities and helps them with the construction of a social network. That is how Resto VanHarte avoids social exclusion.

• With10.000.000kilocollectedtextile,thelevelof2009hasbeenpassedwithover6%,inadditionthe magical barrier of 1.000 ton collected textile has been surpassed for the first time in the history of KICI, more impressive with the difficult market conditions of last year. This impressive result would have not been realized without our donators, civilians, municipalities, corporate partners and other parties.

• ThedensityandintensityoftheKICIcontainernetworkwasenlargedin2010.Thisallowsaneasier access to containers for civilians. KICI annually empties 160.000 times a container in your neighborhood, where? You can find the KICI-containers on www.kici.nl and Google maps.

• In2010weexperiencedmuchinconvenienceofcollectedwettextile.Themunicipalitiesputcontainers underground, often they are not a good fit for textile. So KICI did a technical evaluation and concluded on new criteria the municipalities should use for purchasing underground containers. These criteria have spread across the country and brought under the attention of various municipalities. Almost all municipalities consider going underground with the collection of textile and waste, due to the high savings. However little attention is put on the specifications of the container that are put underground. This results into (unnecessary) impoverishment of the quality of the collected textile.

MunicipalityGennep.Intheendof2009themunicipalityGennep,incooperationwiththeSyntheseConsultancy Group, requested invoices for the collection of textile in its area. KICI was elected for the job due to its high scores on sustainability and focus on charities and innovation.

Contrary to the other municipalities that requested for invoices the past year, Gennep didn’t put the emphasis on price but rather on sustainability, reuse, innovation and the support to local charities. In May 2010 the containers were transformed into the green containers of KICI. In 2011 Gennep and KICI will mainly focus on the improvement of collection results.

Every kilo that KICI collects in Gennep contributes to local charities. The income of the collected textile is used by KICI to support local foundations and projects. This cooperation allows the inhabitants of Gennep to very tangibly feel where the profit of their excess apparel and clothing contributes to.

www.gennep.nl

Municipality of WestvoorneKICI and Westvoorne have again worked hard in 2010 to collect textile in the area. The income of the apparel was used to support local charities. In 2010 Westvoorne collected enough textile to support three charities! December 2nd 2010 KICI gave two cheques to Westvoorne.

The foundation Milieu Dictherbij has been committed to nature and environment education in Westvoorne. Medical Knowledge Institute The Medical Knowledge Institute was one of the lucky ones to receive a cheque of € 1.000,-. This institute is an international non-for-profit health care organization that focuses on the education and the accommodation of information, because they belief that health care is a human right. KICI supports the principles of the MKI as it supports this vision through the education of (orphanage) children in big communities that receive an upbringing through this, learn how to take care of themselves and are taught basic principles assumed to be normal for the Dutch children.

A great success, anincreaseof25%inthecollectedvolume!ThecooperationwithKMHthereforewasveryactivein 2010, unfortunately the organization of KMH was harassed with many staff and management coming and going. Moreover the management of the inventory was not optimal and the in-store performance has room for improvement. Together with the third party in the process, Wieland Textiles BV, radical changes have been suggested to lead to improvement in those areas. This should result into better achievements in 2011.

Retourette Collection of KICI at the Retourettes in the Netherlands has started in 2010 and the first results should start to reveal soon. However with a collection result of about 50.000 kilo the expectations have not been met so far. In the end of 2010 negotiations started with the Netherlands Antilles, Curacao and St. Maarten. The goal of the negotiations is to set up a collaboration between the ministry of VROM and local businesses, allowing for a complete integration of Retourette on these islands.

During the summer of 2010 Hans Markowski was approached by Llink for the TV show ‘De Vlinderrevolutie’ (The Butterfly Revolution). The theme of the TV show revolves around individuals in the society that experienced a big change allowing them to focus more on sustainability. The reasoning behind the show is the theory that one stroke of a butterfly in another part of the world could cause a hurricane. Before Hans Markowski became CEO of KICI in 2003, he was active in the banking world and filled various financial and management functions in the international business. Choosing KICI was a deliberate decision in which he prioritized education, development and sustainability. For the show Hans Markowski was followed for an entire day to capture his passion for sustainability.

Hans took one project as example, the Recycled Denim project that is done in cooperation with G-star and various other parties. This project portrays the possibilities apparel can offer in terms of sustainability, while old jeans are now treated as trash they could become a very valuable resource. This could entail huge savings with regards to the impact on the environment when, in this case, jeans are being produced. Starting 2011 the first jeans partially made out of recycled fibers can be found in stores under Raw Recycled. Starting with a limited edition however a future perspective is put on the expansion of this project. Moreover various other projects will be launched in 2011 in which non re-wearable textile will be an important resource.

The collaboration with alternative collection channels has successfully developed in 2010. In the alternative collection channels KICI collaborates with businesses and/or charities that want to raise funds by using apparel collection activities in which KICI normally takes charge. The profits are credited to charities, according to the agreements with the CBF.

KICI empties almost 1.000 clothing containers in the Netherlands. These containers are emptied, after consultation with the municipalities, according to a set schedule. In general the containers are emptied once a week, however in some municipalities the containers need to be emptied twice or even three times a week.

In 2010 the number of vandalism events and damages made by fire has declined strongly compared to2009,adeclineof8%.

This is due to, for a large part, the improvements made with security, the overall renovation and the facelift of containers showing a substantial effect on the conservation of the containers.

Even though the demand of used textile has increased substantially in 2010, due to the impoverishment of the supply of used textile, KICI has not had the opportunity to exploit the demand side. A new policy for charities to gain impactKICI has kept to a new policy with regards to donations to charities. The new policy bears in mind the mission statement of KICI, the reuse of second hand textile and or use as a resource for an intermediate product (direct/indirect) to improve the righteousness and sustainability of the community. The profits will be donated to charities.

The policy gives substance to the mission of supporting sustainable and social projects that aim to improve the community and social position of the less fortunate and their own influence on circumstances. The objective of KICI is being executed via supporting social projects that connects groups, moves groups, are sustainable, are innovative and comply with the general rules of charities. By having and testing these criteria on project activities a better guarantee and quality can be expected of the activities. These criteria have been chosen on the basis of the core values that KICI adheres to.

The starting point for KICI is the improvement of the community and social position. Each charity does that as they prefer. This means they can differ in the extent of the purpose of the charity as well as its objectives. KICI observed that grassroots charities have different needs than those of nationwide charities. KICI is an organization that can serve to the different needs of the various charities. KICI does so by providing knowledge, usage of the network of KICI, help in goods and financially.

KICI want to improve the community’s social position by firstly enhancing the social cohesion between groups in the community. For example it is important to decrease loneliness. Secondly KICI wants to raise the independence of those groups. KICI finds it important that all the activities are focused on self-support. Thirdly it is of importance to improve the activities leading to possibilities that could mean improvement for own income of that group.

KICI explicitly chooses to support the less fortunate groups by initiatives in the community. These groups are those individuals that do not have economical independence, limited chances on the labor market or with strong local ties. Moreover value is can be found when the focus of an initiative is on increasing sustainability in the value chains of businesses or improving reuse.

To provide substance to the new charity policy an assessment system for the evaluation of projects has been set up, by third parties and KICI. All projects will be judged and evaluated on the basis of this system.

This gives KICI and its partners the opportunity to actually make a substantial contribution in certain areas to a better society, which could serve as an example for surrounding regions. Furthermore, the current core value of sustainability should be reflected in the project donations.

b. Grassroots charitiesIn the last two years a shift can be found in the conditions under which donations are made. Due to the increasing market pressure on the collection of clothing, because of paying commercial and charities collectors, there is an increase in the amount of municipalities that allow the collection of clothes under the condition that the municipality can choose the project one donates to. This is an earmarked project (or earmarked contribution). This provides a bigger spread of (grassroots and nationwide) charities. Particularly the grassroots charities have low (local) name recognition; this entails a low contribution of the charities to higher name recognition of KICI.

KICI has increasingly connected the collection of clothing and shoes as a condition for donation to a project. This will be seen back in the (upcoming) mission statement of KICI.

c. Alternative collection methodsMore attention has been put on alternative collection methods with corporations and institutions. These collection methods are normally tied to a charity.

Due to a changing public opinion the consumer is becoming more aware of making decisions, choices and choosing which organization, brands and movements they relate to. Many social movements have contributed to this change, the increase of environmental pressure, scarcity of water, energy specifically the source of energy is criticized heavily, chemicals of which the usage is limited more etc.

These changes raise the importance to find proper applications for worn out clothing or to dated to wear again. Doing so will allow us to see textile as a valuable resource. This motivates KICI to search for solutions for non re-wearable textile in addition to the current applications of re-wearable textile.

In2008KICIstartedresearchingthepossibilitieswithregardstononre-wearabletextile,this developed into a specific department focusing on innovation in 2010. The department innovation of KICI currently works on three main project: new thread (new textile), textile panels and composites.

The most ideal method of recycling would be the process of turning old clothes into fibers which will be transformed into new clothing. This idea shares characteristics with the Cradle2Cradle concept in which a product of waste is thought of as an element for a new product or process.

In the Cradle2Cradle philosophy this process is named the technological cycles. In the case of textile this method of reuse entails a so called re-spinning process, in which clothes are transformed into fibers following is the process in which the fibers are spun into tread. The thread can be used for new textile products such as clothing.

This process created the idea for a collaboration of KICI between G-Star and other parties to turn old jeans into fibers and create thread. G-Star will apply these reused threads to jeans with a commercial purpose, these jeans are intended for the summer collection of 2011 namely ‘RAW-recycled’. www.g-star.nl

Lastly first tests have been done with the possibility to recycle corporate clothing. First results can be expected by the end of the year 2011. The process would involve turning corporate clothing into fleece sweaters. We believe many firms will be interested in this opportunity as this would correlate with their MVO-policy. Moreover government institutions will be interested in purchasing sustainable products, recycled fiber will have high environmental benefits.

This project started with an idea of a graduate student at the TU Delft university and in 2010 this project was finalized. It is an answer to the question if there are any other methods for the process of textile. Composites can be applied in big products, they offer a high degree of freedom of form, possibilities to integrate parts and reduce the weight.

While this report is being written the first thermo set textiles are being developed with the purpose of market applications.

Examples would include office furniture, retail establishments or even covers for folders and writing cases. The appealing aspect of this product would be the fact that the structure of the textile remains visible.

Pressed textile platesCurrently apparel existing out of various types of fabric are transformed in pulp and used in low valued applications like insulation material. These fibers are mostly a mixture of synthetic and natural fibers moreover it consists out of a mixture of colors as well.

KICI has, with help of other parties, heated and pressed these non-woven mats. This resulted in a sheet that is solely created out of reused textile fibers. This requires no additional ingredients such as glue or resins.

Furthermore research KICI has conducted concluded that those sheets perform well with regards to tensile and absorbs noise well. The emphasis in this area lies currently on the search for appropriate products and applications.

In each of the three projects importance lies with collaboration between existing and new parties to adopt recycled materials in the products and market those accordingly. KICI takes this stance so it can raise awareness with consumers and firms in addition it will allow the visibility of recycled textile to increase.

In 2011 KICI will present, via the participation in the Textiles4Textiles project which is coordinated by KICI, an important and clear result of the research done. A sorting machine which automatically differentiates between the colors of different textiles. This machine is able to enhance the quality of pressed sheets by making the composition of material more consistent. This project is a collaboration of various parties in the branch and is co financed by the European Union.

In the near future KICI also expect and will research the possibilities with the thermoplastic composites. This edition will allow for many new possibilities.

Destroying textiles is more expensive, but it is uncertain how long this trend will continue. It is not naïve to expect that the costs of processing non re-wearable textiles will increase resulting in a negative return, which means destroying the textile would be cheaper.

To reverse this trend, KICI has been working on sustainable and innovative solutions for a couple of years. Consequently KICI collaborates with parties as the Dutch Red Cross, Retourette and others to find new collection models with the purpose of having more money to donate to charity.

Moreover KICI has developed with other parties knowledge and solutions for the sustainable and remunerative process of non re-wearable textile. With municipalities and manufacturers of containers KICI tries to improve the quality of textile in the containers and pull a bigger volume of textile out of waste. This includes the re-introduction of door-to-door collections and performing technical research in order to search for the cause of wet textile in the underground containers as that makes the textile worthless.

‘A charity is a good cause and an expense to a project in which KICI is allowed to contribute, often indirect, to a better and sustainable society. A good cause feels good, the work the KICI-team does for the good cause is good and the cooperation between and in the firm is good. Good ‘Good’ so to speak!’ Hans B. Markowski.

Management structure: as of 1-11-2010 the management of KICI is composed of Mr. Hans Markowski: chairman of the management/ managing director and André Jansen: manager/operational director. Both are responsible for mapping and executing the set policy, each with their own focus points. The management regulations are the framework in which is operated within KICI. The procedure of making important decisions and who is responsible for which focus point is documented in this framework. On monthly occasions management meetings take place in which important affairs are being discussed and evaluated, decisions are made and documented. Laid down by statute are specifications of which decisions need to be approved by the Supervisory Board. The board receives periodical minutes and the decision list of the management meetings. Also in 2010, in consultation with the Supervisory board, guidelines have been set up by the management with regards to the availability of information for the Supervisory Board. The Supervisory Board and management met four times in 2010. These meetings were characterized with an open and constructive quality. Besides those meetings consultation has occurred between the management and the Supervisory Board.

Mr. Markowski has as other functions: Board member of the association VHT and Member of Beroepenveldcommissieopleiding BE of the Academie Accounting and Financial management, Haagse Hoge School (The Hague College).

The foundation KICI is a small group of employees that needs a Supervisory Board composed out of individuals with a social relevant network.

The Supervisory Board is also small, its members have a relevant social function and are connected with important networks. This provides KICI the opportunity to create extra value.

None of the members of the board have a direct connection to KICI and/or the branch in their day-to-day life, this results into a supply of individual, independent visions, that take into account the nature of the foundation KICI. This connects all members with each other.

Working together with transparency to a sustainable world

Again KICI has had a successful year. In the clothing collection domain of KIC, of course, hard work has been done to make agreements with municipalities. Displaying KICI’s values with regards to sustainability remains of huge importance in those agreements. The challenge lay in the opinions of municipalities; they displayed a bigger concern with apparel profits than with apparel inspiration, partly to blame on the crisis years. To increase the collected textile, KICI has been working hard on improving and setting up various collection methods. As currently too much textile disappears in the trash. By focusing collection methods on for example, stores, companies, schools and private parties we hope to collect more and be able to process them sustainably.Together with our partner the Dutch Red Cross we expect to be able to improve a lot in this area.

Despite the economic crisis (which led to a decrease of supply of used textile) and the disappointing collection quantities via various collection methods, KICI has succeeded to maintain profits, which can be considered as an excellent achievement. This also allowed KICI to follow its objectives and donate € 1mln to charities, inspiring projects such as social care, education and an improvement of society in places where it is needed. Also sustainability is an important factor in those projects as well as the purpose of the charities.

KICIhasbeenadheringtotheprincipalssetintheISO9001and14001.Thepreviouslyauditstartedin the end of 2010; in January 2011 the certificate was achieved.

A vital aspect of sustainability is apparel innovation. Much of the used clothing is not fit to be worn again. KICI plays a leading role in the development of concepts to sustainably transfer that textile into usable products. Meanwhile methods have been developed or are being developed to make new apparel out of old apparel (for example together with G-Star) or to transform old textile into isolation material used in the construction of buildings (Metisse isolation) and to extract various fibers from the apparel for the purpose to reuse them in the production of new products. With all these projects, transparency is essential in cooperation between parties to achieve sustainability.

Lastly an important aspect of transparent cooperation is a critical attitude. Firstly remaining critical towards our own objectives. Also together with all partners (municipalities to charities to sorters to manufactures to retailers) we should remain critical in the search for improvements that will benefit the entire value chain and sustainability. Moreover importance lies within the organization, address agreements and developments, coaching and inspiring each other. Lastly a good strategy is to work according to a working performance oriented attittude especially tied into feedback and (self) reflection of all employees, management and the Supervisory Board.

Naturally I would like to thank everybody that has contributed to the great achievement of KICI in 2010. By working together in a transparent manner we alone can achieve a sustainable result.

Consultation and advice of the BoardConsultation with the management took place during the meetings with the Supervisory Board in which the meetings were attended by members of the Management. Moreover in the meantime many conversations took place between the chairmen of the Supervisory Board and the management. On request of certain members of the management the board has advised the management on certain issues. Furthermore a separate meeting has been organized to brainstorm on a long term vision and strategy for KICI.

The consultation of the management and Supervisory board can be characterized by open and constructive qualities. In 2010 Mr. Andre Jansen has been appointed by the Supervisory Board as a new manager. He will take the position of Ellen van de Adel who left, after working with KICI for three years, as manager.

Evaluation of the resultsThe Supervisory Board assesses the results of KICI and its management well. Financially the results have shown to be better than budgeted, despite the lower quality and the worse mix of textile, this is especially due to much effort of the management as well as the organization KICI to ‘sell’. This led to a good remittance of funds for carefully selected and responsible charities! Both on sustainability and transparency KICI is a leader in the market. The objectives for 2010, financial results, transparency in the firm and a cooperation with the Dutch Red Cross, have been largely achieved. Firm transparency is a fundamental topic that contributed largely. The proposed behavioral code has been implemented in 2010. KICI has been working with the principals set by ISO9001and14001,forquitesometime.Theauditfortheseprincipalsstartedintheendof2010,inJanuary 2011 the certificate for those were obtained.

Moreover KICI scores high on the innovation spectrum. Many important steps have been made for the reuse of apparel. The management of KICI has played an essential role here.On request of the board the external accountants have discussed the management letter with the board in the presence of the management. Business aspects as control, payments and fraud have been discussed and accepted. Also the used policies with regards to reservation and investments have been discussed and approved.Starting 2011 a formal evaluation with and from the management by the supervisory board will take place.

Future developments A Multi annual plan for 2011-2014 has been suggested to the management of KICI by the board.

The plan outlines future developments such as the decrease in quality of supplied apparel and the possible decrease in supply of (re-wearable) clothing and the increasing pressure on margins. The board also sees an increase in competition and municipalities claiming a larger part of the profits. The board agrees with the shift from only a collector of textile to a more balanced organization that focuses on the collection, processing and sales of used textile. The corresponding flexibility of the collection companies and investments in the processing and sales appears to fit the objective. Objectives of KICI remain focused on donating to charities with the profits made. To guarantee profits in the future, the investments mentioned are necessary. The risks of the potential decline in profits have been brought to the attention and discussed.

StructureIn 2010 Ms. Sharon Löwensteijn resigned from her position as chairman of the Supervisory Board and also resigned her membership in the board. This resulted into an appointment of Mr. Charles Gevers as chairman and Mr. John Tammel as Vice President. Moreover, in 2010 Mr. Klaas Molenaar has resigned his membership with the Supervisory Board. Both Ms. Löwensteijn as Mr. Molenaar have been actively involved with KICI, which we are very grateful for.

The supervisory Board is considering the consequences of the current structure and will take a decision in the beginning of 2011.
