2009/10 Supper Clubs Being Formed Supper Clubs provide an opportunity for members to get to know each other in a small group setting over conversation and a meal. They are comprised of 8-10 people who have expressed interest. They meet once a month casually. The format and times are set by the group. These groups are a nice cross section of members. If interested fill out a form at the church or contact the church office. For additional information contact Julia Reynolds at 260.9885 or [email protected].

Rick to serve on Visiting Committee for the School of Theology at Sewanee Our rector was invited to serve on the Visiting Committee for the seminary at Sewanee. This committee is a group of lay and clergy that assist the seminary in keeping its commitment to the Church and school’s mission. This year’s focus is ‘Our Mission in the Wider Church: The Future of Education for Ministry and the Programs Center.” This is a three year appointment. The committee meets once a year for three days. The next meeting is November 11-13.

The Choir returns September 13

The choir will begin singing for Sunday worship at 10:30AM on September 13. Rehearsals are held

each Wednesdays at 7PM starting September 9. New voices are always needed.

Music City Triathlon offers Apology to St. Ann's The triathlon was held July 26th during Sunday worship time. It significantly disrupted worship by blocking all access to St. Ann's. First Nazarene was also impacted. The following is a reply to a letter written by Tom Hardin, Sr. Warden.

“On behalf of the organizing committee and the participants in the Music City Triathlon held on Sunday, July 26th, we apologize for the inconvenience to your members due to the bike routing of our event. We should have notified you prior to the event, and for that we sincerely apologize and realize it was an oversight on our part. This was the first time we had this event downtown and unfortunately we overlooked the impact our course routing would have on the ability of your members to attend your services. Please accept our most sincere apologies and know that we are working to re-route the racers in 2010. The event date will be Sunday, July 25th, 2010. Please share this note with your members. We wish you all a great rest of the summer.” Faye Yates - Event Director, Team Magic, Inc.

WELCOME TO OUR SEMINARY INTERN

Kira Schlesinger is our Seminary Intern. She will be with us from September 1 to the end of April, 2010. Kira is a second year student at Vanderbilt Divinity School. She is a postulant for the priesthood in the Diocese of Texas. She attended Rice University where she majored in vocal performance. She is married to Joe Schlesinger who is a second-year resident in anesthesiology at Vanderbilt Hospital. As a congregation we can do three things for her as our sister in Christ and Seminarian Intern: ≈ Pray constantly for Kira and Joe. ≈ Remember Kira is a seminarian and not staff. Let us provide a safe place offering gentle correction and honest affirmation in her discernment. ≈ Show hospitality, offering an affirming community during her formation, ministry and leadership among us.

YOUTH AND CHILDREN MINISTRIES

I just wanted to say “Thank You” to all of you for the lovely retirement celebration. It meant a great deal to me, but what means more is your unflagging support of the youth group over the years -- both spiritually and financially. Not many churches would have seen the benefit of supporting a youth group of one or two teenagers the way St. Ann's did when Hannah joined the Eastwood youth group, then Max Farrar and Louis Claus. We even had our first budget from the church by the second year -- $150 for a pizza party. St. Ann's does a great job of making the youth feel a part of the parish and I hope that will continue. They have great leadership skills to offer the parish now, not just in the future. As I've learned more about youth religious development through my work for The United Methodist Church, it has become clear to me that one of the best things our parish does is that members pay personal attention to the young people. You know their names and you talk to them, you friend them on Facebook, and you celebrate their successes. You donate to support the mission trip, and you make them your standard bearers in the world when they participate in Souper Bowl Sunday and their many other monthly service projects. They make the name of St. Ann's Episcopal Church sparkle, and you help them do it. And there is plenty of research (much of which you'll see posted on my Facebook page) that says that young people who stay with church and return after college are the ones who are involved and feel they have a say in the life of the parish.

If you'll permit me to tell a story, I was struck by Hannah's stories of church shopping in Asheville. One of things that convinced her to return to a church was children parading around the nave with butterflies they had made during Sunday school. And one of the things that caused her to write off a church was the fact that there were no young people. As Lane said when he invited the group to talk about the mission trip, the youth group is more important to the church than just serving the youth and their parents. You're going to see great things from Kristin Wells as leader of the youth group. For one thing, she's really organized and she's pushing them to do more. (Colin tells me she nearly cried when I handed her my youth group files of papers stuffed in a file folder.) Thank you so much for allowing me the opportunity to serve our church as youth leader for so many years. God's Peace, Vicki Brown

Thank You St. Ann's for Your Support of the Youth Group
