People power

Business owners recognise that an engaged workforce is key to productivity and boosting profits, yet it’s significant how little time they devote to their staff.

More than a quarter of business owners we surveyed spent between 2-4% of their time on employees, and for 17% it was only 0-1% of their time.

If businesses don’t invest enough time in their staff this can prove detrimental in the long run.

So what are some of the benefits to focusing on your employees?

Cost Benefit

For 90% of small businesses, staff costs make up to 40% of total overheads.

These costs include:

Absenteeism

Recruitment

Disciplinary matters

Pay

Therefore there are clear financial benefits for employers who are willing to invest more of their time on staff.

More than two-thirds (69%) of employers admitted they didn’t know how absenteeism affected profit or productivity, let alone had a strategy in place to help.

For example, a deliberate focus on creating a vibrant, engaging work environment can help prevent absence and increase productivity. And business owners, by engaging with employees, should look at whether they are doing enough to keep people happy.

So how can play help?

90% of businesses agree that a good relationship with employees has a positive effect on productivity.

However, too many do not devote enough time getting to know their employees, and more business owners should recognise the value that play has in the workplace.

Probation

You could give them a final opportunity to improve their perfor-mance, by issuing a formal warning or placing them on proba-tion.

Probation should be for a fixed period of time. You should let the employee know what improvement you expect and provide sup-port, such as training, to achieve it. Depending on the terms of the employment contract, you may be able to withhold certain benefits and provide shorter notice of dismissal while the em-ployee is on probation. Make sure you have this all formally re-corded and refer to it at each 1-2-1 or appraisal.
