Cameron Muir is a well-known economist and real estate expert. He joined the British Columbia Real Estate Association as Chief Economist in November 2006 and since that time he has built the economics department from the ground up — providing objective analysis, research and regular forecasts of the economy, housing market and mortgage rates. Before joining BCREA, Cameron spent 10 years with Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation as senior market analyst for the BC Region. He is a member of the Canadian Association of Business Economists and the Association of Professional Economists of BC.

BC Commercial Leading Indicator Edges LowerThe British Columbia Real Es-

tate Association (BCREA) Com-mercial Leading Indicator (CLI) edged down 0.4 points to 108.1 in the second quarter of 2011. After posting a strong performance in 2010, the index has trended lower since the beginning of the year.

The CLI peaked at a level of 115.5 in the second quarter of 2007 before the onset of the fi nancial crisis pushed it to a low of 97.7 in the fi rst half of 2009.

The downward pressure in the CLI over the past two quarters is mostly a product of weak growth in both retail sales and employment. In addition, provincial manufactur-ing sales have deteriorated along-side the global economy.

“Tepid job creation and dete-riorating global economic growth represent signifi cant headwinds for the BC economy and could lead to softer commercial activity in coming quarters,” said Brendon Ogmundson, BCREA Economist. “However, an almost unprecedent-ed decline in long-term interest rates may help to stimulate invest-ment activity and soften the impact of slower economic growth.”
