“No one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit. There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit; there are different forms of service but the same Lord; there are different workings but the same God who produces all of them in everyone. To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit.” ~ 1 Corinthians 12:3b–7 ~ Imagine this scene: the believers were all gathered inside, isolated for fear of suffering and death. Jesus, their teacher and spiritual guide, had appeared to them but was suddenly missing again from their lives. Unable to count on his physical presence for sustaining hope, they relied on one another for support and encouragement. Using their individual gifts and talents, they focused on the needs of the community and caring for one another. Truly, the Holy Spirit was with them. This scene describes those first disciples on the day of Pentecost but is equally true for us in our present day as we manage our transition from quarantine to a life lived with calculated risks in daily moments. How does our faith inform and shape our actions? How are we using our individual gifts and talents for the needs of the community and caring for one another? I have witnessed the Holy Spirit at work through our St. Vincent de Paul members reaching out to assist families with food and shelter; in the weekly efforts of our Mercy Team volunteers organizing our Sack Lunch Meals of Mercy; in the families contributing food for these efforts, dropping them off each Sunday – a spiritual communion with brothers and sisters in need. And more witness: the encouragement of our eighth-grade students for the drop-off carline; the tireless efforts of teachers and parents to continue educating our children; the liturgical ministers giving service at daily Masses to help maintain safety; parishioners making calls to other parishioners to check in on them and offer assistance; parish staff members learning new skills to provide formation and prayer opportunities and to maintain communications with parishioners. There are different gifts, but the same Holy Spirit that we celebrate on this great feast of Pentecost. This is the birthday of the church – empowered by that same Holy Spirit to actualize our faith in Christ in our daily lives, and daily tasks. No matter what our age, our gifts become gifts when we give them away for the good of others. Each of us has a choice to remain in our “upper room” or to find new ways to become part of the Body of Christ living and active in our current time. - Tom Tomaszek, Pastoral Associate WEEKDAY SERVICES AT OLL Daily Homily by Fr. How does our faith inform and shape our actions? How are we using our individual gifts and talents for the needs of the community and caring for one another?

I have witnessed the Holy Spirit at work through our St.

them off each Sunday – a spiritual communion with brothers and sisters in need.

YEAR OF THE WORD OF GODThis year we are encouraging you to read the Bible. Reading Plans available in the Narthex and at the Welcome Desk in the Parish Hall. If you have questions, feel free and we’d be happy to help as well as offer encouragement!

Remember, don’t worry about getting behind or starting at a later date. You can go at your own pace or begin where we are. Follow along with our journey of Reading through the Bible this year on social media, the weekly emails, and online at ollparish.com/read-the-bible.

This Week’s ReadingsSunday, May 24 • Day 127: 1 Samuel 3-5 (Samuel is called; the Ark of the Covenant is lost in battle), Psalm 119:145-160, and Mark 5:1-20 (The Healing of the Gerasene Demoniac). Visit us on Social Media to share what you are learning!

Bible Reading EncouragementOver the last then days we read Psalm 119, which is the largest Pslam and longest chapter in the Bible with 176. Psalm 119 is written as an acrostic poem with 22 stanzas (eight lines in each stanza). The stanzas are in the Hebrew alphabetical order, beginning with aleph and ending with taw. The poem praises God for His instruction to us, given through the Law andTorah. If you were to write a poem, praising God, what would you praise Him for? Visit us on Instagram or Facebook to share your thoughts or ask your questions about these passages!

Liturgy, Music, & Prayer

Pentecost SequenceOn special liturgical occasions including Pentecost and Easter, we sing a “Sequence” a musical poem, as a reflec-tion before the proclamation of the Gospel. In the Middle Ages there were many sequences, but in our current Roman Missal, only two are required. Here is the text for Pentecost:

Veni, Sancte Spiritus (Come, Holy Spirit)Come, Holy Spirit, come!And from your celestial home Shed a ray of light divine!Come, Father of the poor!Come, source of all our store! Come, within our bosoms shine.

You, of comforters the best;You, the soul’s most welcome guest; Sweet refreshment here below;In our labor, rest most sweet;Grateful coolness in the heat; Solace in the midst of woe.

O most blessed Light divine,Shine within these hearts of yours, And our inmost being fill!Where you are not, we have naught,Nothing good in deed or thought, Nothing free from taint of ill.

Heal our wounds, our strength renew;On our dryness pour your dew; Wash the stains of guilt away:Bend the stubborn heart and will;Melt the frozen, warm the chill; Guide the steps that go astray.

On the faithful, who adoreAnd confess you, evermore In your sevenfold gift descend;Give them virtue’s sure reward;Give them your salvation, Lord; Give them joys that never end. Amen. Alleluia.

7 Gi s of the Holy Spirit PrayerChrist Jesus, before ascending into heaven, You promised to send the Holy Spirit to Your apostles and disciples.Grant that the same Spirit may perfect in my life the work of Your grace and love.

God grant me:

the Spirit of Wisdomthat I may be judicious about the perishable things of this world, and aspire to the things that are eternal;

the Spirit of Understandingto enlighten my mind with the light of Your divine truth;

the the Spirit of Counselthat I may ever choosethe surest way of doing Your will, and gaining heaven;

the Spirit of Knowledgethat I may know You and know myself and grow in holiness;

the Spirit of Pietythat I may find the service of God sweet and amiable;

the Spirit of Fortitudethat I may bear my cross with You, and that I may courageously overcome all the obstacles that oppose my salvation;

the Spirit of Fear Of The Lordthat I may be filled with a loving reverence toward You and avoid sin that leads me away from You;

Teach me to be Your faithful disciple and animate me in every way with Your Holy Spirit.

Amen.

Mercy Teams

Sack Lunch Meals of MercyThank You parishioners, parish young families, parish teens, for your overwhelming support of our Sack Lunch Meals of Mercy Outreach.

Over 1,000 sack lunches were donated each week on Sundays, April 26 and May 3 using our SAFE Drive Through Drop-Off, between 8:00 and 10:30 AM. As of May 5, we have delivered over 3,000 Meals of Mercy to our most vulnerable. We expect to

exceed 4,000 total deliveries by Mother’s Day weekend, May 10/ 11.

Meals have been distributed to St. Francis Dining Hall, Union Gospel Mission’s Search & Rescue, The Fathers Heart, St. Michael the Archangel Meals Ministry, Clay Street Station, Salvation Army Female Emergency Shelter, and Clackamas County Sheriffs Homeless Outreach. We have delivered to Long-Term Care Facility workers that have dealt with COVID-19. We also delivered a special meal to the moms and their kids residing at Union Gospel

Misson’s Life Change for Women and their Children.

We plan to continue the Sack Lunch Meals of Mercy through May 24.

You can sign up to pledge a few sack lunches, help collect or help deliver to the various missions by visiting www.ollparish.com/mercy-teams.

Shopping for the HomeboundWe have matched 8 homebound parishioners with shopping assistance so far. We have the capacity to do more. If you are aware of a need, please submit that persons contact info to our sign up sheet at www.ollparish.com/mercy-teams.

About Walking with Moms in NeedPregnant and parenting moms in need are in our parishes and our neighborhoods. As Pope Francis reminds us, our parishes need to be “islands of mercy in the midst of a sea of indifference.” Everyone in the parish community should know where to refer a pregnant woman in need.

We are inviting parishes, through the support of their bishop and pastor, to join a nationwide effort from March 25, 2020 to March 25, 2021 entitled: “Walking with Moms in Need: A Year of Service.” www.usccb.org/about/pro-life-activities/index.cfm

Did You Know?? This Pentecost Sunday, we will be pray-ing “that the Holy Spirit, Lord and Giver of Life, may re-new the face of the earth and make it a place where the poor are fed, the strangers are welcomed, and the unborn are brought safely to birth” (priestsforlife.org). Join us in prayer during this year of Walking with Moms in Need.

Please pick up a copy of “Listen to Your Heart” in the Nar-thex which has resources to help pregnant women.
