The Word of God Prelude Prayer for Social-Distance Worship Almighty God of the Cross and loving God of Community, we are different as the Church today, but we know you are with us. We remember especially that we are the body of Christ in your suffering world. We know that our vocation is to be the light of this Christ whose Body we are. Give us courage to be the Church as we keep our minds on what matters, which is to keep loving the World which you have called good. Buildings crumble, the church year passes, but your church endures from generation to generation. Make this day a feast day of your protection, your plenty, your purpose, your plan, and your peace. All this we ask as we pray with all the saints and with one another. Amen.

Song of Praise Sweet, Sweet Spirit LEVAS 120 (verses 1 and 2)

Verse 1 There’s a sweet, sweet Spirit in this place, and I know that it’s the Spirit of the Lord. There are sweet expressions on each face, and I know they feel the presence of the Lord.

Refrain Sweet Holy spirit, Sweet Heavenly Dove, Stay right here with us, filling us with your love. And for these blessings we lift our hearts in praise; without a doubt we’ll know that we have been revived when we shall leave this place.

Verse 2 There are blessings you cannot receive till you know him in his fullness, and believe. You’re the one to profit when you say, “I am going to walk with Jesus all the way.”

Refrain Sweet Holy spirit, Sweet Heavenly Dove, Stay right here with us, filling us with your love. And for these blessings we lift our hearts in praise; without a doubt we’ll know that we have been revived when we shall leave this place.

Words: Doris Akers (b. 1922); Music: Doris Akers

The First Reading Reader: A reading from Acts 2:1-21 When the day of Pentecost had come, the disciples were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, "Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs-- in our own languages we hear them speaking about God's deeds of power." All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, "What does this mean?" But others sneered and said, "They are filled with new wine." But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, "Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o'clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel:

`In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh,

and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions,

and your old men shall dream dreams. Even upon my slaves, both men and women,

in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy.

And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist.

The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord's great and glorious day.

Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.' "

The Second Reading Please read in unison

Psalm 104:25-35,37 Prayer Book Page 735 25 O LORD, how manifold are your works! *

in wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. 26 Yonder is the great and wide sea with its living things too many to

number, * creatures both small and great.

27 There move the ships, and there is that Leviathan, * which you have made for the sport of it.

28 All of them look to you * to give them their food in due season.

29 You give it to them; they gather it; * you open your hand, and they are filled with good things.

30 You hide your face, and they are terrified; * you take away their breath, and they die and return to their dust.

31 You send forth your Spirit, and they are created; * and so you renew the face of the earth.

32 May the glory of the LORD endure for ever; * may the LORD rejoice in all his works.

33 He looks at the earth and it trembles; * he touches the mountains and they smoke.

34 I will sing to the LORD as long as I live; * I will praise my God while I have my being.

35 May these words of mine please him; * I will rejoice in the LORD.

37 Bless the LORD, O my soul. * Hallelujah!

Presider: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. People: Glory to you, Lord Christ. The Gospel Luke 17:20-24 Once Jesus was asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God was coming, and he answered, “The kingdom of God is not coming with things that can be observed; nor will they say, ‘Look, here it is!’ or ‘There it is!’ For, in fact, the kingdom of God is among you.” Then he said to the disciples, “The days are coming when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and you will not see it. They will say to you, ‘Look there!’ or ‘Look here!’ Do not go, do not set off in pursuit. For as the lightning flashes and lights up the sky from one side to the other, so will the Son of Man be in his day. Presider: The Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise to you, Lord Christ.

The Message The Reverend Hillary West

Returning the Gifts for Ministry

Rector: At the beginning of my ministry, you gave me many things in trust and a charge as to how to use them. Now, I leave these and other things with you, the folks who carry out the ministry of Epiphany with love, grace and mercy.

To Worship Leaders: Continue to share these worship resources, (Book of Common Prayer, Enriching our Worship, etc.) and these stoles that belong to this church and ensure that the prayers of God’s people and, along with the ministry of clergy, the sacraments of the church continue in this place. Amen.

To Lay Readers and Eucharistic Ministers: Continue to read this Word of God in Christ; to administer this sacrament of the Lord’s Supper with reverence, that all will know the Christ in you and in this body as you gather to worship our Lord and Savior. Amen.

To Ministers of Music: Continue to use these hymnals and these song books to ensure that all may give thanks and praise to our Lord through song and music. Amen.

To Parish Life, Newcomers, Pray-ers and Fellowship: When able, continue to care for one another through prayer and good fellowship that all will be remined of Christ’s presence among us all in the celebrations and challenges of life. Amen.

To Admin and Operations and Buildings and Grounds: For the good work of your efforts that the life of Epiphany is known throughout and especially in this building that welcomes all no exceptions. Amen.

To Christian Formation Leaders: Continue to teach one another, young and old alike, through the artful tools of Godly Play, online teaching, Sunday School, Sunday Circle, Vacation Bible School, family events, small group discussions, book groups and Bible studies that you will know we are all on the journey of learning and being formed as Christ’s own forever. Amen.

To Outreach Ministry Leaders: Continue to care for the lost, and the forgotten. Feed the hungry. Clothe the naked. Minister to all knowing that among the least of these, you are ministering to Christ himself. Amen.

To the Finance Ministry Team: Continue to prayerfully and astutely give prudent attention to the management and distribution of the generous financial gifts given to Epiphany that ministries may prosper and God’s kingdom is made known. Amen.

To Vestry, Staff and Leadership: Continue to serve as valuable resources of leadership during this time of transition trusting in God, the church canons and bylaws, in one another, and in The Diocese of Virginia as it lovingly assists you in these next steps. Amen.

To the Senior and Junior Warden: Receive these keys being returned to you with the knowledge that Epiphany has always been a haven and safe place open to all, ensuring the doors are forever open to all people. Amen.

May these items of Church action be a sign of the glorious ministry that is yours and the Bishop’s in this place. Amen.

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Please be seated.

The Ending of a Pastoral Relationship Rector: On the 4th day of January, 2014, I was charged by you, the congregation of Epiphany, and the Bishop of The Diocese of Virginia to serve as your Priest in Charge and then in 2016 as your rector. With your guidance and abundant support, I have served faithfully. With God’s help and to the best of my abilities, I have exercised this trust you’ve held in me, accepting its privileges and responsibilities. Now, after prayer and careful consideration, God is calling me to leave this charge. Today, Sunday May 31, 2020, I publicly declare that my tenure as your rector is ended. Senior Warden (or other as noted by the Bishop): Do you, the people of Epiphany, recognize and accept the conclusion of this pastoral relationship? ALL: We do.

Prayers

Please read in unison

ALL: O God, you have bound us together for a time as priest and people to work for the advancement of your kingdom as the congregation of Epiphany. We give you humble and hearty thanks for the ministry which we have shared throughout these past years. Silence ALL: We thank you for your patience with us despite our blindness and slowness of heart. We thank you for your forgiveness and mercy in the face of our many failures. Silence

ALL: Especially we thank you for your never-failing presence with us through our time together, and for the deeper knowledge of you, Lord God, and of each other which we have grown to live with full intention that you, loving Lord, love us all, no exceptions. Silence ALL: We thank you for being in our common life together as we’ve grown from a congregation of returning to a community of bountiful welcoming, warmth and wonder at your life in us through our ministry together. Thank you for opening our hearts and minds again and again to your Word, and for feeding us abundantly with the Sacrament of the Body and Blood of your Son. Silence ALL: Now, we pray, be with those who leave and with us who stay; and grant that all of us, by drawing ever nearer to you, may always be close to each other in the communion of your saints; knowing full well, that those who walk in the Lord never see one another for the final time. All this we ask for the sake of Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord. Amen.

Song for Breathe On Me Breath of God Hymnal 508 Setting the Table

Words: Edwin Hatch (1835-1889), alt.; Music: Nova Vita, Lister R. Peace (1885-1969)

The Holy Communion This is the time we remember that Jesus died on the cross for us and then was made alive again by God so we would always know how much God loves us. We ask for God to make the bread and the cup holy with God’s spirit for us so we will be filled up and made strong with God’s love to do God’s work in the world. **Currently, as a faithful community in solidarity with one another as the body of Christ, we will fast from the taking of Holy Communion and engage in Spiritual Communion in response to maintaining healthy social distance, and in honoring the integrity of the sacrament. ** Eucharistic Prayer B Prayer Book Page 367 Presider: The Lord be with you. People: We lift them to the Lord. Presider: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People: It is right to give God thanks and praise. It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.. Through the great shepherd of thy flock, Jesus Christ our Lord; who after his resurrection sent forth his apostles to preach the Gospel and to teach all nations; and promised to be with them always, even unto the end of the ages. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: Please join in singing. Presider: We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word

spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life. On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Therefore, according to his command, O Father, People: We remember his death, we proclaim his resurrection, we await his coming in glory. Presider: And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen. And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to pray… People and Presider Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Breaking of the Bread The Presider breaks the consecrated Bread. A period of silence is kept. Presider: Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us;

People: Therefore, let us keep the feast. Alleluia In observance of the sacrament, each pray the following prayer from St. Alphonsus Liguori: ALL: My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen. Please join in singing Song It Is Well With My Soul LEVAS 188
