LECTORS & INTERCESSORS AT MASS TODAY !

!THE COLLECT Almighty and everlasting God, increase in us the gifts of faith, hope, and charity; and, that we may obtain what you promise, make us love what you command; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. !THE FIRST READING: !READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in

the Book of Jeremiah Chapter 14 beginning at the 7th verse !

"Though our iniquities testify against us, act, O LORD, for thy name's sake; for our backslidings are many, we have sinned against thee. O thou hope of Israel, its saviour in time of trouble, why shouldst thou be like a stranger in the land, like a wayfarer who turns aside to tarry for a night? Why shouldst thou be like a man confused, like a mighty man who cannot save? Yet thou, O LORD, art in the midst of us, and we are called by thy name; leave us not." Thus says the LORD concerning this people: "They have loved to wander thus, they have not restrained their feet; therefore the LORD does not accept them, now he will remember their iniquity and punish their sins."Hast thou utterly rejected Judah? Does thy soul loathe Zion? Why hast thou smitten us so that there is no healing for us? We looked for

peace, but no good came; for a time of healing, but behold, terror. We acknowledge our wickedness, O LORD, and the iniquity of our fathers, for we have sinned against thee. Do not spurn us, for thy name's sake; do not dishonour thy glorious throne; remember and do not break thy covenant with us. Are there any among the false gods of the nations that can bring rain? Or can the heavens give showers? Art thou not he, O LORD our God? We set our hope on thee, for thou doest all these things. !Reader: Here ends the Reading. ALL: Thanks be to God. !PSALM 84 Quam dilecta! 1.How dear to me is your dwelling, O Lord of hosts ! * My soul has a desire and longing for the courts of the Lord; my heart and my flesh rejoice in the living God. !2.The sparrow has found her a house and the swallow a nest where she may lay her young; * by the side of your altars, O Lord of hosts, my King and my God. !!3.Happy are they who dwell in your house!* they will always be praising you. !4.Happy are the people whose strength is in you!* whose hearts are set on the pilgrims' way. !

5.Those who go through the desolate valley will find it a place of springs, * for the early rains have covered it with pools of water. !6.They will climb from height to height, * and the

God of gods will reveal himself in Zion.

7.Lord God of hosts, hear my prayer; * hearken, O God of Jacob. !8.Behold our defender, O God;* and look upon the face of your anointed. !9.For one day in your courts is better than a thousand in my own room, *- and to stand at the threshold of the house of my God than to dwell in the tents of the wicked. !10.For the Lord God is both sun and shield;* he will give grace and glory; !11.No good thing will the Lord withhold* from those who walk with integrity. !12.O Lord of hosts,* happy are they who put their trust in you! !Glory to the Father, and to the Son;*and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning is now:*and shall be forever. Amen !THE EPISTLE A Reading from the Word of God written in the Second Letter to Timothy Chapter 4 beginning at the 6th verse. I am already on the point of being sacrificed; the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.  Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.   At my first defense no one took my part; all deserted me. May it not be charged against

them!  But the Lord stood by me and gave me strength to proclaim the message fully, that all the Gentiles might hear it. So I was rescued from the lion's mouth. The Lord will rescue me from every evil and save me for his heavenly kingdom. To him be the glory for ever and ever. Amen.  !Reader: Here ends the Reading. THE HOLY GOSPEL Gospeller: The Lord be with you

All: And also with you !Gospeller: A Reading from the Holy Gospel according

to Luke All: Glory to Christ our Saviour.

At that time Jesus also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous and despised others: "Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, `God, I thank thee that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week, I give tithes of all that I get.' But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, `God, be merciful to me a sinner!' I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for every one who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted."

From the Rector’s Notebook Greetings: “They were mortal too like us” Hymn 838 CPWI

Hymnal

Ever so often throughout the liturgical year we celebrate the feast day of various saints.

The calendar of saints sometimes called the sanctoral calendar helps us to have a glimpse of those persons who are worthy of our respectful veneration as they sought to mirror the life of Christ in their own daily living.

Tomorrow for example the church throughout the work will celebrate the Feast of St. Simon & St. Jude. These are two persons who were with Jesus himself from the time he was baptised to the time that he returned to his Father in Heaven.

St. Jude, known as Thaddaeus, was a brother of St. James the Less, and a relative of Our Saviour. Ancient writers tell us that he preached the Gospel in Judea, Samaria, Idumaea, Syria, Mesopotamia, and Libya.

He is an author of an epistle (letter) to the Churches of the East, particularly the Jewish converts.

Jude is invoked in desperate situations because his New Testament letter stresses that the faithful should persevere in the environment of harsh,

7

Page 8: Pentecost 23[2013]

difficult circumstances, just as their forefathers had done before them. Therefore, he is the patron saint of desperate cases.

Jude was the one who asked Jesus at the Last Supper why He would not manifest Himself to the whole world after His resurrection. Little else is known of his life. He was possibly martyred with St. Simon.

Simon was surnamed the Zealot for his rigid adherence to the Jewish law and to the Canaanite law.

Tradition states that he preached in Egypt and then went to Persia with St. Jude, where both suffered martyrdom.

We thank God for their lives of witness and we pray for the grace to imitate Christ in our own day.

Your friend and priest, !!Noel A. Burke, MA, (The Rev’d Canon) Rector
