Niah National Park

Niah National Park, located within Miri Division, Sarawak, Malaysia, is the site of

the Niah limestone cave and archeological site. Niah National Park was 31.4 km²

when it was gazetted in 1974. Nomination for World Heritage status of the Niah Caves

was sent to UNESCO in 2010.

There were three young men who wanted to marry the headman’s daughter. “Show me your skill and I will decide which one of you can marry my daughter,” said the headman.

The first young man was strong. He placed two huge rocks on his

shoulder and ran. The second man was skilful with a rifle. He shot at a bird flying

in the sky and injured its wing. The third man sang so well that even the wild

animals stopped their cries and listened.

After their performances the headman still could not make up his mind.

A few days later, the girl was at the river washing her clothes. The young men

were on the bank watching her. Suddenly the girl slipped and fell into the river.

At once the strong young man jumped into the river and saved her.

The headman was grateful to the strong young man. He said “My daughter is yours. You are the only one who risked your life to save hers.”
