Get free AMBER Alerts On Your Wireless Device

You may have heard about AMBER Alerts, but did you know you can get them directly on your mobile phone as a text message?

Wireless AMBER Alerts, an initiative by the RCMP, OPP and Canada’s wireless industry, has taken a proactive stance on protecting children. Th e program began to ensure that mobile phone users in Canada could receive instant notifi ca-tion of a child abduction, widening the net of information available to the public.

Named aft er Amber Hagerman, an abducted murder vic-tim, the AMBER Alerts program allows information about an abducted child to be dispersed to the public as quickly as possible. Now, with this wireless extension, the program goes one step further by sending the information directly to your cell phone. When a child is abducted, everyone in the community feels the loss. Th e program is available free to cell phone users in all 10 provinces.

Subscribing can be done either online at www.wire-lessamber.ca, or by texting the keyword AMBER to 26237 directly from your wireless device. www.newscanada.com

I, Claudia Th is one-act play

runs just over an hour and introduces you to Claudia, a pre-teen, who is still reeling from her parents’ di-vorce. Her father is getting remarried, she has a science fair pro-ject coming due, and she is in the physical and emotional throes of puberty. Finding refuge in the basement of her school, Claudia discovers the pain at the centre of her brim-ming child’s heart. Some important adults in Claudia’s life – her grandfather, her fath-er’s new girlfriend, and the school custodian – help shed light on her situation.

Th ese characters are brought to life by one actress who wears a diff erent mask to por-tray each individual. Th e masks were made by local artist Robin Wiltse specifi cally for this production, and Kaslo resident Lynn van Deursen is very excited to have this opportunity to bring them to life as she shares Claudia’s story with you, the audience.

I, Claudia by Kris-ten Th omson will be shown at the Langham Th eatre on Saturday, May 19 and Sunday, May 20 at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $12 and available at Sunnyside Naturals and Willow Home Gallery.

Employment Opportunities Employment Opportunities

Th is City Is Made For Walking

Jane’s Walk will be held on Satur-day, May 5 and Sunday, May 6, start-ing at Oso Negro Cafe at 2 pm and 1 pm respectively. Many people in Nel-son and around the world will take to the street to answer Jane Jacobs’ famous call to “get out and walk”. Th e 6th annual Jane’s Walk is a chance to explore Nelson’s neighbourhoods with fresh eyes and a curious mind.

Created in 2007 in Toronto by friends of the urban thinker and author Jane Jacobs, the free, volunteer-led urban walks have grown exponentially from 27 walks the fi rst year to over 500 walks around the world – from Calgary to Canberra and Sao Paulo to Saskatoon – in over 75 cities and 16 countries.

Walks are as varied as the people taking part, and they create the time and space for people to connect, share, and develop ideas about where their communities and cities are at and where they are headed.

Ask yourself – what kind of Jane’s Walker are you? From the Curious who wants to get behind the scenes, the Green at Heart, the Foodie, the friendly Neighbour, the Aesthete roaming the open-air urban mu-seum, the Active moving about the city and the Citizen fascinated by the past and future of the city, its pub-lic space and institutions, there are walks for all city-lovers.

Find detailed walks at www.janes-walk.net, look out for posters with walk details in local shops, select fa-vourites on the free iPhone app and get out and walk on Saturday May 5 and Sunday May 6!

For more information, contact Jane’s Walk Nelson organizer Don Carmichael at 250-352-0794.

Patches is a handsome medium haired grey neutered male who is around the age of 3 years. He was a stray found in the area prior to living here at the Trail BCSPCA.

He is super friendly with people and other cats, but would need time to adjust to living with a dog.

Patch really deserves a great new home where he can live the easy life, where he doesn’t have to hunt for his own food, and has a warm bed, instead of a cold night outside.

If Patch sounds like the kind of cat you are looking for, please come to the Trail BCSPCA and meet Patches!

You can also contact the

shelter at 250-368-5910 or [email protected].

The Trail BCSPCA would also like to invite everyone to the Trail BCSPCA 2012 Open House on Saturday May 5, 2012 from 12pm to 4pm.

Come and meet the animals, the staff , and learn more about the shelter and the work we do here. Nail trimming will be available by donation.

A barbeque will be held at the Waneta Plaza on the same day at 11am until food is sold out. Thank you to the members of the Kiwanis Club for holding the BBQ. All proceeds will go to the Trail BCSPCA.

Tick TalkSpring is here and many of us will be spending more

time outdoors in tall grass and wooded areas which means an increased chance of getting tick bites. Ticks, small bugs that bite and feed on the blood of humans and animals, can sometimes transmit disease. Fortunately, there are precautions people can take to prevent illnesses that may be transmitted from tick bites.

“Th ere are easy things you can do to protect yourself, like covering up before you head outdoors and checking for ticks when returning from a walk, hike or bike ride,” said Dr. Karin Goodison, public health physician with Interior Health. “Most tick bites do not result in illness; however, any bite from a tick or other insect should be cleaned because infection can occur whenever there is a break in the skin.”

While ticks are common in the Interior Health region, most are the wood tick (dermacentor andersoni) species which does not carry the Lyme disease bacteria. Lyme disease-carrying ticks (I. pacifi cus) are more common in the coastal areas of BC. Th e wood tick can carry other diseases such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever, although it is rare. In addition, ticks also have toxins that can cause temporary muscle weakness and paralysis if they are at-tached for several days, especially in children or seniors – but the symptoms fade once the tick is removed from the skin. Th e signs of many tick-borne infections can be quite similar and include fever, headache, muscle pain and rash.

“Lyme disease-carrying ticks are less common in the Interior of BC than on the coast; however, our residents do travel around the province, so it’s important they are aware of the signs of Lyme disease,” said Dr. Goodison. “Approximately 70-80% of people newly infected with Lyme disease will develop small red bumps at the site of the tick bite within several days. Th e redness then spreads out into a circular rash eventually resembling a target or “bull’s-eye”. Individuals who experience this rash should see their doctor as soon as possible.”

One of the most important ways to reduce the risk of tick illnesses is to do a skin check on yourself and your children aft er being outdoors. Other precautions include:• Walking on cleared trails when in tall grass or wooded

areas.• Wearing a hat, long sleeves, pants and light-coloured

clothing.• Tucking pant legs into socks or boots.• Applying insect repellent containing DEET on uncov-

ered skin.• Carefully checking clothing and scalp (covered or not)

when leaving an area where ticks may live.• Regularly checking household pets for ticks. To reduce ticks from entering your home and yard, try

these steps:• Keep your lawn short and remove any leaf litter and

weeds.• Keep a buff er area such as wood-chip or gravel border

between your lawn and wooded areas or stone walls. Any play equipment or play zones should be kept away from wooded areas.

• Trim tree branches to allow more sunlight in your yard.• Keep wood piles and bird feeders away from the house.• Widen and maintain trails on your property. If you fi nd a tick on yourself, a family member or pet,

wear gloves when removing it and be careful not to crush the tick as this could cause it to inject its stom-ach contents into your skin. Other tips to remove ticks safely include:

• Use needle-nose tweezers to gently grasp the tick close to the skin.

• Without squeezing, pull the tick straight out.• Aft er removal, clean the area with soap and water.

If you fi nd a tick, check very carefully for others. If you have concerns or need assistance removing a tick,

please contact your family doctor or visit a walk-in med-ical clinic.

Strategic Planning Community Sessions

Selkirk College is asking for community input towards their future direction. Th e college is developing a stra-tegic plan that will set a high level direction for the next fi ve years. According to Selkirk College President Angus Graeme, “Community engagement and development are absolutely integral to the success of Selkirk College. Hear-ing the thoughts and ideas from our communities as we renew our strategic plan is so important for us to eff ect-ively plan for the future.”

Th e process is now in the external consultation phase and the local communities in the West Kootenay Bound-ary area are being asked to share their input and feedback towards Selkirk’s emerging direction to help the college remain relevant, responsive, and refl ective of the com-munities’ needs.

Please join us for one of the following open house ses-sions:• May 2 – Nelson Community Meeting - Scholar’s Dining

Room at 4 pm. • May 7 – Kaslo Extension Centre at 4 pm.• May 10 – Castlegar Campus S113 at 4 pm. • May 15 – Trail Campus Muriel Griffi ths Recital Room

at 4 pm.• May 16 – Nakusp Extension Centre at 4 pm.

Th e internal consultation phase of the planning process was recently completed and very important voices were heard from throughout the college – staff , faculty, and most importantly students. Th is feedback helped identify and support emerging strategic themes, which will be fur-ther reviewed and refi ned through the external consulta-tion process.

Moving forward, the information gathered from both the internal and external consultations will be used to de-velop the strategic plan. Th e planning process is on track and a draft plan will presented for review to the Strategic Planning Advisory Committee in June 2012.

For more information about Selkirk’s strategic plan-ning process, visit www.selkirk.ca/about/governance/strategicplanning

Th ree local youth earned the honour of attending the Canada Wide Science Fair in Charlottetown, PEI this May. From left : Micah May, Emma Borhi, Teacher Ann McDon-nell and Miranda Sherell.

Celebrating Our Young ScientistsIt starts with an inquisitive mind that becomes captivated

by an interesting question and driven to unravel the mys-tery. It is not Sherlock Holmes of which we speak, rather a group of 82 young scientists who recently participated in the West Kootenay and Boundary Regional Science Fair.

Th e 2012 event involved the largest ever number of senior students and head judge Jeremy McComb was supported by more volunteer judges than ever before. Th e momentum building around this event also relates to the quality of the projects as students showed a remarkable depth of know-ledge at all grade levels.

“To date we have only sent two students from our region to the national science fair because of funding limitations and the quality of science,” explained organizer Ann Mc-Donnell. “Last year our students were extremely successful in winning both prize money and scholarships, which raised the standards within our region. As a result, this year three students have earned the honor of an all-expenses paid trip to the national event in Charlottetown, PEI this May: Mir-anda Sherell, Emma Borhi and Micah May.” Other major prizes of up to $200 were won by these students as well as September Stephani, Kevin Milde and Kai Stone.

Th e science fair was once again part of a larger Commun-ity Science Celebration hosted by the Kootenay Association for Science and Technology (KAST) and Science World. Th e family-friendly, free and interactive event was not only fun for all ages, but also profi led the many science and technol-ogy businesses and professionals that call our region home.

“By fostering a culture that values science, technology, innovation and entrepreneurship, KAST seeks to main-tain and enhance the competitiveness of the region,” ex-plained Executive Director Kelvin Saldern. “In doing so, we are helping to ensure there will be opportunities for these young scientists to choose to stay in our region as adult pro-fessionals and entrepreneurs who will then give back to our communities.”

Th e Science Fair and Community Science Celebration were made possible by the generous support of numerous partners, including NSERC, Fortis, Columbia Basin Trust, Columbia Power Corporation, Zellstoff Celgar and many local businesses.

Major award winners of this year’s fair are: Emma Borhi, Micah May, Miranda Sherell, September Stephani, Maria Phelan, Kevin Milde, Kai Stone.

Nelson Garden FestivalIf gardens are good teachers, there will be lots to learn at

the 11th Annual Nelson Garden Festival on Saturday, May 12 on downtown Baker Street.

“We have more vendors than ever,” says one of the festi-vals organizers Glyn Violini. “Each year the festival grows and really, community agriculture prospers.”

Violini, a heather and rose vendor who helped start the fi rst garden festival, has seen the event grow from a few tables in 2001, to more than 40 vendors and commun-ity groups today. Sponsored by the EcoSociety, the garden festival will again feature a stunning array of perennials, annuals, veggies, herbs and fl owers as well as garden ac-cessories and custom furniture, manure and fertilizers.

“Th is is where you’ll fi nd hardy local varieties for your garden from the region’s prime growers,” says Violini. “We always hold it on Mother’s Day weekend so you can fi nd something for mom, too.”

Th e festival runs from 10 am to 3 pm, rain or shine, on the 200 block of Baker and Kootenay Street. For more in-formation call 250-354-1909 or visit www.ecosociety.ca
