Rosemont Public Washroom Natural Building Project

Ground has broken for the new public washroom at the Art Gibbons Memorial Park in (Rosemont) Nelson, a joint project between the City of Nelson and the Koo-tenay/Rockies branch of the Cascadia Green Building Council. Ellenwood Homes, a local contractor, is well on the way to constructing the net-zero energy ‘natural building’ with local, healthy, low-embodied-energy ma-terials and alternative building methods.

Th e building will be integrated into the landscape with curved walls constructed of natural clay and wood-chips, a vegetated green roof, and local, sustainably-harvested timbers.

“Cascadia’s goal is to provide education on proven, sus-tainable building methods,” says Shari Imada, chair of the Kootenay/Rockies branch. “We want to show that building with natural materials not only results in a comfortable, beautiful building, but one that can be constructed with a limited budget if you’re willing to put in some eff ort.”

Th roughout the upcoming season, Cascadia will hold weekend hands-on workshops held on site, including: Wood-chip Clay Infi ll & Clay Brick Construction (July 14-15), Vegetated Roof Plantings (June 16), Natural Clay Plaster (July 28-29), and Renewable Energy Systems and On-Demand Hot Water (September 16).

Writing Courses In Nelson Two writing courses – on professional editing, and on

how to incorporate the past century’s changes to prose and poetry into your own writing – will be off ered in Nelson by Okanagan College.

Th e intensive summer courses, off ered in conjunction with Selkirk College and Nelson’s Elephant Mountain Lit-erary Festival, will each occur half-days Monday to Friday at Selkirk’s Tenth Street campus July 9 to 13 and July 16 to 20. Enrollees may take either course for post-secondary credit or for general interest.

Th e professional editing course, off ered in the mor-nings, is useful for writers as well as prospective or current editors. It covers the role of editors in the publishing pro-cess, plus structural, stylistic, and copy editing. Okanagan College instructors for the course are Jeremy Lanaway, a 15-year veteran of the publishing industry, and Corinna Chong, whose editing experience includes technical pa-pers for the National Research Council as well as fi ction for literary magazines.

Off ered in the aft ernoons is the course examining changes in literary prose and poetry since the advent of movies, television and computers, and how writers today can apply those changes to their own writing. Teaching the course are Okanagan College faculty members Sean Johnston, a novelist and poet who edits Okanagan Col-lege’s literary magazine, Ryga, and Kevin McPherson Eck-hoff , a poet and graphic novelist.

Th e Okanagan College courses represent the fi rst time the college has off ered in the West Kootenay elements of its diploma program in writing and publishing. More details

Recent fi nancial support for the Festival has come from the Osprey Community Foundation, and the Parliamentary Poet Laureate and the Library of Parliament.

Images by David Gluns At Th e LibraryTh e photographs of David R. Gluns are familiar to some:

his work appears on many local websites and tourism bro-chures, and he’s the feature photographer for the coff ee table book: Nelson, British Columbia. Now, a selection of some of his fi nest work is on display at the Nelson Public Library, 602 Stanley Street.

Dave Gluns travels everywhere with an inspired eye, consummate skill, and a good camera – or two – or three. It’s paid off . His photographs have appeared in a number of national and international magazines including Beautiful British Columbia, Western Living, Bike, Westworld, Cycle Canada, BC Women, Northwest Travel, Golf West, Sunset, Western Living, Canoe and Kayak, and Explore.

Dave’s images have also appeared in several books, in-cluding British Columbia (Learner Publications), Over Beautiful British Columbia: An Aerial Adventure (BBCM Publication), and Nelson, British Columbia and Th e West Kootenay in Photographs (Ward Creek Press).

An avid skier, hiker, and outdoorsman, Dave also leads treks in Nepal, his camera always close by. In support of education opportunities for Nepalese children, he has held fundraising slide shows of his Nepal images. Gluns is also a fi xed-wing pilot and oft en works in conjunction with Nelson Mountain Air doing aerial photography.

Recently, Dave retired from his day job as a forest hy-drologist and now devotes more time to his “other work.” Th e exhibition at the library continues through July.

Local Market Set For Big Opening Day

Th e West Kootenay EcoSociety will open the Downtown Nelson Local Market on Wednesday, June 13 in the 400 block of Baker Street for its third year in a row.

Th e market will run each Wednesday from 9:30 am to 3 pm through to September 26, off ering an amazing mix of local produce, plants, prepared foods, body care, and hand-made arts and craft s. Customers can rest assured that they are supporting the local economy due to the fact that 80% of each vendor’s wares must be made locally to be sold at the market.

EcoSociety’s Markets Director Jesse R. Woodward will work with vendors, business owners, and city agencies to ensure the market’s success. “We’re thrilled with the re-sponse from vendors, the city, and businesses along Baker Street. Th e Downtown Market is completely sold out again this year, with over thirty vendors on the waiting list,” he said. “Customers will really appreciate the quality and di-versity of the off erings at the market, especially in com-bination with Baker Street’s amazing retail selection.”

New for this year, the market has been organized into product sections that should make it easier for customers to navigate the market and fi nd what they need. Eggs and honey will be available to complement seasonal fruits and vegetables from the region. Craft s will include hand-made hats and shoes, locally made clothing and jewellery, and an array of body and home care products.

Th e West Kootenay EcoSociety operates the Downtown Nelson Local Market as a project to promote local food security, re-localization of our economy and to create a meeting place for arts, culture and community network-ing. Ecosociety has also received a grant from the Colum-bia Basin Trust to support local artists and artisans at the markets. Th e EcoSociety also runs the Saturday Cotton-wood Community Market at Cottonwood Falls Park, and MarketFest, the monthly Friday night street festivals.

Salmo Valley Farmer’s MarketSpring is in the air and the Salmo Valley Farmer’s Market

is gearing up for another vibrant season of summer mar-kets. Opening market day is Th ursday, June 28, from 4 to 7 pm. It is located at the same great location, beside Salmo Community Services on the highway to Nelson.

Over the winter months we held two evenings of indoor markets with food related fi lms shown. A successful plant sale was held outdoors behind Salmo Elementary School on May 6, where the vendors and participants were enter-tained by musicians Sem Kelpin and Marty Carter. Chil-dren enjoyed two planned activities thanks to Rachel Som-merville and Carolyn Cassar.

In February, the CBT money was disbursed according to community votes, and the Salmo Valley farmer’s market received $4000 towards the music stage, Shambhala music Festival donated $2700, BC Gaming $1500 and the Salmo Valley Fund $900. Th ese funds will cover all anticipated costs for the 14 by 16 foot covered stage.

Th e market committee is working towards becoming a non-profi t society. Th e stage for musicians is being built by Mike Klassen in May. Bob Blackwood has volunteered to do the wiring for the stage.

A farmer’s market benefi t concert is slated for Sat-urday, June 30. Th is will be an aft ernoon and evening event and will feature many local musi-cians, actors and singing groups. Hutch is taking bookings for the concert and he can be reached at [email protected] . Th is will be a family friendly event for all ages to enjoy.

People interested in having vending space at the market need to apply at [email protected] or phone the market manager at 250-357-2451 for details. Season passes are being sold at a discount price until May 30, but even aft er that date, we are the most aff ordable market in BC.

John Lent’s New Novel Vernon author, educator and musician John

Lent, an instructor at Nelson’s former Notre Dame University, will launch his new novel, Th e Path to Ardroe, at Nelson’s Oxygen Art Centre, 320 Vernon Street (alley entrance), on Friday, June 15 at 7:30 p.m.

Th e launch, part of Oxygen Art Centre’s Presentation Series, is free and open to the public.

Th e novel follows four characters who grew up in, or who were infl uenced by, post-World War II Edmonton, and at the time of the story are variously living in Scot-land, France and the OkanaganValley. Th e book focuses on turning points in the characters’ lives and relation-ships with each other, and incorporates a unique mir-ror-image structure off ering two chapters centred on each character.

“I can think of no Canadian writer,” wrote Canadian liter-ature icon Robert Kroetsch about Lent, “who so thoroughly positions in front of us the mirror that might off er us at once both reality and the imagined. It is to Lent that I turn when I need to be reminded...how the writer works in the daily world of place while aspiring to what endures.”

Following Lent’s stint at Notre Dame in Nelson, he taught English and writing for many years at Okanag-an College, including fi ve years as North Okanagan Regional Dean. His other poetry and fi ction publica-tions include the novel So It Won’t Go Away, shortlistedfor the 2005 B.C. Book Prizes. A parallel career as a musician began in Nelson when he performed as a folk-singer under the name Johnny Fargo.

Currently he performs as part of the Vernon-based jazz and roots group, the Lent/Fraser/Wall Trio.

Kootenay Fest Needs Volunteers On Saturday, July 14, participants, performers and

vendors will gather together again on the grounds of the Doukhobor Discovery Centre to take part in the 2nd An-nual Kootenay Festival – Let’s Celebrate.

Last year, the fi rst ever Kootenay Festival in Castlegar saw over 2000 participants enjoy a day of music, dance, a regional artisan marketplace and delicious food. Th is year, organizers are hoping to increase attendance and are looking to returning and new volunteers to help make the event as successful as last year.

Volunteer areas include parking, security, vendor sup-port, children’s activities, information/merchandise, ad-missions and environment. Youth volunteers between the ages of 15 and 18 are encouraged to take part. Set up on Friday and clean up on Saturday night also requires a lot of volunteer eff ort to accomplish and organizers are hoping for additional volunteer support for these tasks.

Organizers also have a special request – more golf carts and drivers! Th e festival grounds are quite large and the few carts the Festival had last year made a great diff erence to seniors and other festival participants with limited mo-bility in taking part in the event.

Twenty-eight junior teed it up at Redstone under sunnyskies for the 18-hole tournament Saturday. Overall winnerwas Braden McKay of Rossland/Trail, his fi rst ever overallJunior Circuit win.

In the age categories MacKenzie Field of Christina Laketook fi rst in the 17 to 18 division with Alex Rugg and Gar-rett Underwood deadlock in second. Tyler McKay, wasfi rst in the 15 to 16 year division with Fullerton secondand Trevor Browell was third. In the 14 and under div-ision, Arcuri took fi rst while Jackson Konkin of Rossland/Trail a solid second at 88 and Browell placed third.

In the net division Ellard was fi rst overall in the 15-18and Jeff Ashton from Castlegar was fi rst in the 14 andunder division.

Melissa Ruth On Tour Canadian singer/songwriter Melissa Ruth brings her

signature Doo-Wop Twang sound to Pacifi c Northwest audiences this summer. She will be touring (Ain’t No Tour Tour), in support of her latest studio eff ort Ain’t No Whis-key, an album she released late in 2011 on her own record label Both Ears Records.

Regarding her “Ain’t No Tour Tour,” Ruth says: “I am considering this a bit of a homecoming tour. I have never toured extensively in BC which is really quite silly con-sidering how much I miss it. I am planning on touring in Canada on a much more regular basis in the future.” Aft er relocating from Winlaw, BC to California as a teenager, Ruth has since settled in Eugene, Oregon. JVH Senior Girls Soccer Provincial Games

Th e players, coaches, and parents had a great time in Kelowna at the 2012 Provincial Soccer Championships. Entering the tournament with only one substitute, and unfortunately missing fi ve wonderful players, the girls were keen and enthusiastic. Being given an extremely challenging line-up of opponents, the girls played with heart and perseverance right to the end of each game. Our record was 1-4-0; the girls won one hard fought game against Kelowna Christian Secondary, and had a notably impressive and determined game against the number one ranked team, Glenlyon-Norfolk from Victoria. It was both a learning experience and pleasure to coach a group of such hard-working, energetic, proud young ladies, and we would like to thank the community of Kaslo for the support that was given. Spring Programs With Slocan Valley Rec

Upcoming programs with Slocan Valley Recreation will off er insight into local plant identifi cation and various mushroom cultivation methods.

On Saturday, June 23, from 10 am to 1 pm, Shanoon Bennett will off er another popular edible valley adventure walk, with a focus on herbs and plants that can benefi t women at diff erent stages of life. Shanoon’s knowledge of the local landscape and natural history as well as her pas-sion for education are evident in all of her programs, and these walks are a great way to learn about how you can utilize the plants that might be growing right in your own backyard.

Th e next day, on Sunday, June 24, from 1 pm to 4 pm, Peter McAllister from Underbelly Farm and the Koote-nay Agroforestry Society returns to the area to share his passion for growing culinary and medicinal mushrooms indoors and outdoors – for fun or for profi t. Th e fi rst hour and half will off er a demonstration on practical, simple methods to start mushrooms using spores, stem butts and commercially prepared spawn. A slideshow and discus-sion on how to maintain and grow mushroom cultures such as yogurt, miso, tempeh, beer and wine yeast, shii-take and oyster mushroom spawns, kombucha, amasake, sourdough cultures etc. will take part in the second part of the day.

Concerts In Th e Courtyard Wednesday, May 30 saw the launch of a new summer

series of eclectic house concerts at the Ravencourt B&B in Upper Passmore. Th ere will be monthly concerts through-out the summer at this creatively designed post and beam straw bale home, to which everyone is invited. Concerts happen on the last Wednesday of the month beginning at 7:30 p.m. Th ey take place in the amazing inner courtyard of this two story Bed & Breakfast with your hosts Doro-thea Schlichting and Peter Hauser waiting to greet you.

Th e fi rst concert of the season featured the voice of jazz singer Sarah McGlynn. She fi lled the space with tones from sensitive lightness to powerful strength. Together with the top notch instrumentalists, Jesse Lee on bass and Rich Rabnett on guitar, this trio had the audience smiling all evening.

Th e ambience of the courtyard is inspirational, and the next concert will be on Wednesday, June 27. Classical music lovers, mark this on your calendar as valley local Sophia Gray, Swiss born and classically-trained, will sing pieces from Schubert Lieder to a Bach Cantata accompan-ied by piano and trumpet.

Winlaw Outreach Program UpdateTh e Nelson Public Library’s Winlaw Outreach Program

is about to take a summer break. A regular event at Win-law School every third Th ursday since last September, the rotating collection of 300+ books and multimedia items for all ages and interests will stay home in July and Au-gust. Th e fi nal Winlaw Library Day is slated for Th ursday, June 21 from 3 pm to 7 pm.

Many valley people have come out to borrow library items and fi nd out about databases, audio and e-book download opportunities, and other online resources, as well as library programming in Nelson. Strong Start families visited and held storytimes during these monthly sessions.

Th e fi nal Winlaw Day until fall will be marked with a

draw for local gift certifi cates for Cedar Creek Café and Jennie’s Garden, and a meeting at 6:30 pm for anyone who has feedback to provide about the service and ideas for making it better or reaching more people.

“We’d like to hear from teens, Parent Advisory Coun-cils, seniors, and families to make sure we’re providing the best possible service with the available resources,” says Chief Librarian June Stockdale.

Anyone living in the Valley is welcome to attend the meeting. Refreshments will be served.

New Exhibit At Kootenay GalleryOpening on June 15 at the Kootenay Gallery of Art is an

exhibition entitled, Variations on Symmetry, by Canadian ceramic artists Eliza Au and Ying-Yeuh Chuang. Th ese large scale installation pieces will at fi rst glance surprise and delight. Upon further examination the viewer will come to understand the intricacies and level of detail that went into creating them.

Ying-Yueh Chuang explores symmetry in relation to repetition and patterning found in the landscape and nat-ural environment. An example of this is the large scale piece entitled ‘+’ placed on the fl oor in the centre of one of the exhibition spaces, an intricate arrangement of deli-cate sculptures resembling underwater plants.

Eliza Au, in turn explores symmetry in relation to pre-cision, order and scale found in architecture. As in archi-tecture, materials are selected keeping in mind criteria such as structural strength and fl exibility. Au’s two large ceramic mandalas entitled ‘Mediation of Order’ are refer-ences to Islamic tile patterns and Gothic tile and ironwork patterns.

Th is impressive exhibition combines ceramics and mixed media to create works that refl ect the artists’ own hybrid culture infl uenced by their Asian origins as well as the contemporary Western culture in which they live and work.

Variations on Symmetry will be exhibited at the Koo-tenay Gallery, located on Heritage Way across from the Castlegar Airport from Friday, June 15 to Saturday, July 28 with an opening reception on Friday, June 15 at 7 pm.
