Were very proud to anounce that 2011 marksour 50th Anniversary! Thats right, in 1961ourfounder, Dr. James ONeill, opened his practice.Theres been a tremendous amount of change, bothin Clarkston and in the field of medicine, but onemans mission of caring for this community hasgrown into an entire organization of people commit-ted to your health.

Dr. ONeill, my father, attended a one-room

schoolhouse near the badlands in Williston, NorthDakota. When he was only 16, he boarded a trainfor Minneapolis to begin college because, therewas no more they could teach him in that littleschoolhouse. In Minneapolis he attended St. Tho-mas College, and after just three years was ac-cepted to the St. Louis Univerity School of Medi-cine.

In 1958 at the age of 23, he graduated at the topof his class and became the youngest physician inthe United States of America! He also met mymother, Mikel. They started a family that wouldgrow to include six children and 14 grandchildren.

After medical school, my parents moved toDetroit so that my father could train at Henry Ford

Hospital specializing in pediatrics. As his residencyneared its end, he and my mother were recruited bymany small communities, but in 1961, they decidedon Clarkston -- this after much urging from doctors

Bullard and Naz. They gave him a bench in ahallway, a broom closet for suppies, and one examroom. My parents settled into the old Ford farm-

house and the rest, as they say, is history.To give you perspective on what has happened

over the last half of a century, weve had ten presi-dents, the US population has nearly doubled, andweve rid our country of small pox and polio, thelatter of which Dr. James ONeill survived as achild.

Growing up as the youngestson of Dr. ONeill and then join-ing him in practice, I have quitea few stories of my own! Onethat always sticks with me oc-curred when I was only sevenor eight years old. In thoseyears, people came to our home

at all hours of the day or nightif they were sick or injured.That was just the way it wasfor our family. Oftentimes Iwould sneak downstairs intoour back kitchen and watch him

treat patients. Late one night, first one, then anotherbloodied teenager showed up at our back door to gettheir faces and knuckles sewn up. Turns out theyd got-ten into a fight at Pine Knob with each other! My fathervery calmly got them to shake hands, made them somecoffee, and sewed them up before lecturing them onstaying out of trouble and not getting into fights.

Weve come a long way since that little white table in

our back kitchen, but the mission still remains the same;to take care of our community!

What Are Impacted Teeth?

When a wisdom tooth is unable to erupt or come into the mouth

normally, it is said to be impacted. Nine out of ten people have at

least one impacted wisdom tooth resulting from a lack of space in the

mouth.

How Serious is an Impacted Wisdom Tooth?

Impacted wisdom teeth can result in pain, infection and crowding of,

or damage to, adjacent teeth. More serious problems may occur if

the sac that surrounds the impacted tooth fills with fluid and enlargesto form a cyst. This enlargement can hollow out the jaw and cause

permanent damage to the adjacent teeth, jawbone and nerves. In rare

cases, if the cyst is not treated, a tumor may develop from

the walls of the cyst and a more complicated surgical procedure may

be required to remove it. Many people believe that as long as they are

not in pain, they do not have to worry about their wisdom teeth.

However, asymptomatic, or pain free, does not mean the absence

of disease or pathology. A recent study by the American Association

of Oral Surgeons found that wisdom teeth that have broken through

the tissue and erupted into the mouth in a normal, upright position

may be prone to many of the same diseases as those wisdom teeth

that remain impacted.

Why have your Wisdom Teeth Removed?

Bacteria that causes gum disease may exist in clinically significant

numbers in and around non painful wisdom teeth and cause damage

before symptoms let you know that something is wrong. Impacted

wisdom teeth can contribute to a variety of problems, including

infection, damage to neighboring teeth, tooth decay, receding gums,

loosened teeth, bone loss and tooth loss. Research suggests the

bacteria surrounding wisdom teeth may contribute to systemic health

problems, including diabetes, heart disease, and kidney disease. Other

studies have found that gum disease in expectant mothers is strongly

associated with a greater likelihood of preterm and low birth weight

babies. It isnt wise to wait until your wisdom teeth start to botheryou. Summit Oral Surgery strongly recommends that to prevent future

problems, wisdom teeth are removed by the time that patient is a young

adult. Researchers have found that older adult patients may be at greater

risk for the development of disease, including periodontitis, in the

tissues surrounding the wisdom teeth and adjacent teeth. In addition,

the longer wisdom teeth remain in your mouth, the more likely they

are to cause problems. When they do, these

complications may be more difficult to treat in

older patients and, may affect your general health.
