From the President’s Pen…

The last three months of 2015 has proven to be a busy time for the PA State Fox

& Coyote Hunter’s Assn. We participated in an extremely interesting and productive

Sporting Dog Owners meeting with the PA Game Commission on June 30th

and our

Family Day Picnic was held on June 27th. Our Speed and Drive Field Trial was held on

August 8th

. See the full reports on these events below.

Eleven Year Old Jay Maneval Takes State’s First Mentored Coyote

Upon the inception of coyotes being added to the list of approved species for the

Mentored Youth Program in 2008, Commissioner Jay Delaney provided an official PA

Game Commission Coyote Patch, to be presented to the first member to take a coyote as

a mentored youth.

Understandably we were not surprised that it took this long for one of our

youngsters to connect.

Jay Maneval, 11 year old great grandson of John Maneval, has done the job and

made Pennsylvania hunting history!

Cheryl Maneval, Jay’s mom, provided the details:

“John Maneval asked me to send you a picture of Jay Maneval's coyote

that he shot on Saturday, January 24, 2015. Jay was hunting with his

great - grandfather, John, dad, Jason, great-uncle, Jake and cousin,

Ben. He was 11 at the time he shot it.

The coyote weighed 35 lbs. and was killed off of a dog named Buck.

He is pictured with his great-grandfather, John Maneval and the dog, Buck.”

Our congratulations to Jay and special thanks to great- grandfather John for

guiding Jay in his hunting career and bringing him to our events over the past few years.

Pennsylvania State Fox & Coyote Hunter’s Assn. Hosts Family Day Picnic

Molyneaux’s Training Enclosure, Endicott, New York, was the site for

Pennsylvania State’s tenth annual Family Day Picnic. 103 members and guests were on

hand to enjoy summer picnic fare while running 35 hounds.

A variety of competitions and training classes also comprised the day’s activities.

The traditional horn-blowing contests were won by Alex Van Camp and Hannah

Keane, with Dillon Keane and Clarissa Schmitt taking second honors. Cole Van Camp

won the photo hunt and also took third place, with brother Alex taking second place in

the event.

Many youngsters (and adults) were very attentive during a highly informative

“White Tail Deer Aging” class presented by Jack Sorber.

2015 State Champion Coyote Hunter Bob Clark was unavailable to receive his

trophy for first place in the Association’s Coyote Tournament, however Wade Gray

accepted the trophy on Bob’s behalf. Other winners were Jack Sorber (2 places), Drew

Madill (3 places), and Jerry Devine (4 places).

The puppy raffle was won by Caden Jennings with Kevin Van Camp being

declared winner of the Yeti cooler. Special thanks are in order to John Nielson, Jim Zittle

and Steven Gardner; each providing a particularly beautiful puppy for the organization

raffle and auction.

Special thanks for other donated auction items are accorded to Tammy and Kevin

Van Camp (woodcraft items), Wade and Carol Gray (NY Strip Steaks), Sally Davis

(quilted pillow/blanket), Bill Doney’s Thunder Valley Pet Pantry (dog food), Ron Sands

(lottery tickets), Dave and Debbie Wride (Brunswick Logo/dog supply items) and Gene

Molyneaux (Two recovery units and assorted collars), also Custom Collars, Gundog

Supply and Prowler Quick Track for several gift certificates. Also special thanks to Wade

and Carol Gray and Ron and Sally Davis for donating the burgers for the event – a huge

savings for the organization!

Baking Contest a Big Hit!

As a result of suggestions from a few members, this year’s Family Day featured a

baking contest for the first time in our recent history. The results were:

Cakes: Tammy Van Camp's "Fresh Apple Cake"

Cookies: Marilyn Ross' "Chocolate Chip Cookies"

Pies: Carol Gray's "Banana Split Deserte"

Many thanks to the judges: Janet Hall, Gene Molyneaux, Amy Peterson, and

Joan Ross.

We are also grateful to Amy and Emily Carr for coordinating the event.

Favorable weather, good game conditioning and superb hounds combined to

make another memorable PA State Speed & Drive Field Trial at Molyneaux’s Plantation,

with Begore’s Sadie winning the event. 75 hounds ran in the limited entry event,

representing Pennsylvania, New York and Canada.

Kipp Adcock did a great job serving as Master of Hounds.

We are also grateful to Gene, Staci and Richard Molyneaux who continue to host

many of our events and are continually responsive to all of our requests.

Special thanks to Debbie Wride, Mercy Ross, Tammy Van Camp and

Marty Carr. Sometimes we forget to give the credit to those who work the hardest

during our field trial. They cooked, cleaned, sold merchandise, set up the booths, tore

them down and performed a countless number of other tasks.

We are ever grateful to our faithful sponsor: Prowler Quick Track for their

discount coupons.

Overview – 2015 Sporting Dog Owners Meeting, June 30, 2015

The 2015 Sporting Dog Owner’s Meeting was held at PA Game Commission

Headquarters, Harrisburg, on Tuesday June 30th. The meeting was jointly chaired by

Dick Bednarczyk, President, PA State Fox & Coyote Hunter’s Assn. inc. and Richard

Palmer, Deputy Executive Director, PA Game Commission.

Major participants were members of the PA State Fox & Coyote Hunters Assn.,

The PA Beagle Gun Dog Assn. and the PA Nite Hunter’s Assn.

Below is a brief summary of the outcome of the meeting:

1). Rabbits were added as an eligible species to the Mentored Youth Program.

2). The Bobcat Season was rescheduled to start on a Saturday, giving the

“working hunter” additional hunting opportunities. Three additional days were also added

to account for the non-eligible Sundays imbedded in the hunting season.

3). Confirmation was provided that the DCNR did link up with the PGC

regarding “mean seeds” plantings. The extent of DCNR reaction is solely within their

perogative, however.

4). Clarification was provided regarding the genesis of 7-day licensing for non-

residents wishing to hunt coyotes.

5). The Game Commission reported that they have expressed their opposition to

the Anti-Tethering Bill to the legislature.

6). Jim Katchko, President, PA Beagle Gun Dog Federation provided two form

letters to all present to use to contact their legislator to oppose the anti-tethering bill (SB

373) and support SB 77, which provides for improvements to licensing and special

permits for dog training areas.

.( Please note that items (1), (2) and (3) are the result of discussions which were

introduced during previous year’s meetings and required appropriate study of their

impact before final outcomes could be reached. We believe that most of these

accomplishments are significant and lead to the overall enhancement of sporting dog life

in the Commonwealth.

They also reflect the extreme importance of these meetings to our sport and the

willingness of the Game Commission Staff and the Board of Commissioners to support

our efforts whenever possible).

Our thanks to all members who made the time to travel to Harrisburg and

participate and to Jim Katchko and John Gibble of the beaglers and Bruce Knopsnider of

the PA Nite Hunters for their ongoing partnership with us in these efforts.

2015 Memberships Now Due

At this point, everyone should have received their 2015 membership billing. We

are requesting prompt payment of dues so that we may continue to fund our various

activities and maintain our advocacy of hound owners’ rights with the various governing

bodies which affect our sport. In the event that you may have misplaced your billing, you

may remit your dues to Dick Bednarczyk, using the address which appears on the

letterhead.

Scholarship Winners Drawn!

History was made at the Family Day Picnic when Rob Carr and Taylor Cole saw

their applications drawn at random, for our inaugural scholarship program. There were

eighteen eligible applicants.

Rob is the son of Tim and Amy Carr and grandson of Marty Carr. He has been

either a youth member or adult member for several years and is a ‘graduate” of our field

trial judges program.

Rob is a third year engineering student at PSU.

Taylor Cole is the granddaughter of Ron Cole. As a youth, she was an avid

participant in all Family Day activities.

Taylor is an incoming freshman at Bowling Green State University.

Congratulations and best wishes to Rob and Taylor!
