From the CEO

I am pleased to introduce Peninsula Health’s first edition of Wishing Well. This newsletter provides an opportunity to showcase how your donations benefit patients and clients at every site across Frankston and the Mornington Peninsula. Our services would not be possible without the ongoing support that you, and others like you in our community, provide each year. It is the generosity of the community that adds value to the services we provide and helps to ensure the high standard of healthcare that Peninsula Health offers.Your donations will be used to purchase additional equipment or provide enhanced services, helping us to deliver the highest quality of care to our community.During the year, we provided care to many people in our community including:• 64,024 patients who were admitted to our hospitals • 96,932 community mental health occasions of care• 120,007 hours of service provided through our Community Health servicesThe Board and our staff are grateful for the donations generously given to Peninsula Health. Dr Sherene DevanesenChief Executive

The hard work and dedication of committed Input Fitness members has helped Frankston Hospital Oncology Unit purchase a new piece of equipment to help with chemotherapy.

This year Input Fitness held a six week challenge with a dual purpose: to assist members with weight loss and healthy lifestyle choices; and to raise funds for a great cause - one kilo lost meant one dollar went to the Frankston Hospital Oncology Unit.

As a result of their hard work Input Fitness members raised $700 and Input Fitness matched that amount bringing the total donation to $1,400.

This generous donation helped the Oncology Unit purchase an anaesthetic trolley, enabling pa-tients to move around duing treat-ment, giving staff easier access to patients and providing more room within the unit.

Input Fitness owner Rebekha Anderson has been personally touched by the work of the Frankston Hospital’s Oncology Unit after her father, Alan, was treated at Frankston Oncology for kidney cancer.

“We were looking for a local community organisation that we could support as well as interesting our members,” says Rebekha.

“This was a great way for us to support a local organisation which provides vital cancer services to the Frankston and Mornington Peninsula community” she said.

Joan Thomas, Nurse Unit Manager of the Frankston Hospital Oncology Unit could not be happier about the donation, saying, “We greatly appreciate the support of Input Fitness and its members. Without the support of the community we wouldn’t have the extra things that are so important in cancer treatment.”

The Oncology Day Treatment Centre at Frankston Hospital is set to expand in the New Year.

“The expansion and redesign will deliver an additional four treatment chairs, taking the total number to 15, and two additional beds. The layout will be redesigned to create a friendlier, brighter and more accessible service for patients and staff,” said Dr Sherene Devanesen, Peninsula Health Chief Executive.

“The unit currently delivers more than 4,000 occasions of service per year. It is expected that this number will grow as our population ages. It is important that we are able to not only provide enhanced services now, but are prepared for future demand,” said Dr Devanesen.

In addition to an increase in chair and bed facilities, the redesign will also add much needed floor space to the current treatment area.

The expansion will ensure services such as chemotherapy, blood transfusions, bone marrow biopsies, pathology and other investigative procedures are able to be carried out in an environment that is tailored to suit the needs of the service.

Little Taj Watson has a new friend to keep him company in Frankston Hospital’s Paediatric Unit.

Taj’s joy proves donations don’t always have to come in the form of money. Sometimes all you need is great company and some knitting needles.

Thanks to members of the Frankston North Rotary Club, patients in the Frankston Hospital Paediatric Unit will be given a little happy memory to take home with them.

Thirty knitted teddy bears have been donated by the club, to give to our littlest patients as a positive memory from their visit to hospital.

Frankston North Rotary Club member, Marilyn Hackett, started knitting the bears and has since had others come on board and show interest in knitting bears for the unit, so there are plenty more bears on the way.

Each hand-knitted teddy is unique, to match each little personality. Paediatric Nurse Unit Manager Helen Hutchins says, “The teddy bears were a lovely thought and enjoyed by the little children.”

Taj Watson plays with his new hand-made teddy bear.

Mornington Craft Group proves age is no barrier to helping othersOur friends at the Mornington Craft Group (pictured below right) meet every Wednesday to knit little suits, blankets and beanies for the tiny patients of Frankston Hospital’s Special Care Nursery and the residents of The Mornington Centre.

The group has 12 members, with the eldest member being 96 years old. Age is no barrier for these ladies!

Pat Runacres from the Mornington Craft Group said, “Each little suit takes 200 grams of wool. We try to make an equal number of boys and girls coloured suits and beanies.”

Dianne Macfarlane, Nurse Unit Manager, Special Care Nursery says, “We use the hats the most to help with low temperatures. Every little baby needs to keep their head warm and most of the time we wrap them up in a warm cardigan too.“

“Due to the babies keeping their wool knits, we run out very quickly. We are very thankful to groups such as the Mornington Craft Group for kindly donating this knitwear to us.”

Calico dolls provide comfortFor many young patients who present to the Paediatric Unit at Frankston Hospital, a cuddly toy can help provide comfort and reduce stress or trauma.

A simple calico doll can assist sick children to communicate their pain in a non-verbal way by drawing on the doll; they can also be used to comfort children who are worried about their hospital stay or have not had time to pack their favourite toy. Staff also find calico dolls useful when explaining medical procedures to children as it can give an unwell young patient a clearer understanding of any procedures or treatments they may be undergoing.

The Paediatric Unit at Frankston Hospital is interested in hearing from people who would like to sew plain calico dolls for our unwell young patients. Pattern templates can be downloaded from the internet at http://community.kiwanisone.org/media/p/240.aspx

If you are interested in making calico dolls for the Paediatric Unit and would like the guidelines, please contact Natasha Hund, Play Therapist at Frankston Hospital. Phone 9784 7777.

Prior to working for the kiosk Sue volunteered for Vision Australia in Mount Eliza before permanently taking on the secretary role of the Rosebud Hospital Kiosk Auxiliary.

“A successful Auxiliary provides a chance for the members to socialise as well as the opportunity to help the Hospital,” says Sue.

The kiosk is open six days a week and provides a tasty lunch or snack, a cup of tea, coffee or a cool drink for the many patients, staff and visitors of the hospital.

They also sell toiletries, magazines and newspapers, as well as a range of hand knitted baby wear.

In conjunction with her role at the Rosebud kiosk, Sue is also the President of the West Rosebud - Tootgarook Auxiliary - a small group of dedicated members who have been actively fundraising for more than 50 years. Funds raised over the years have helped to purchase much needed equipment for Rosebud Hospital.

Sadly, the West Rosebud - Tootgarook Auxiliary will be disbanding at the end of this year.

We sincerely thank the West Rosebud - Tootgarook Auxiliary for their dedication and hard work over many years for Rosebud Hospital.

Volunteer Sue Phillips has been with the Rosebud Hospital Kiosk Auxiliary for 15 years.

In 1991 the Rosebud Hospital Kiosk Auxiliary was merely a trolley. Today it is a fully functioning kiosk that is located in the foyer at Rosebud Hospital.

The kiosk recently donated $50,000 for the refurbishment of the Emergency Department at Rosebud Hospital. Over the years they have helped to purchase many pieces

of much needed equipment for Rosebud Hospital.

The kiosk’s proudest achievement was when their donation led to the purchase of a mini-bus for Rosebud Hospital in 1998. The bus transports patients between Peninsula Health sites.

The kiosk treasurer/secretary Sue Phillips began volunteering at the Rosebud Hospital Kiosk Auxiliary 15 years ago, after moving to McCrae to retire.

Peninsula Health is fortunate to have a number of Auxiliaries established by volunteers who dedicate their time and effort towards enhancing our health service.

Peninsula Health is seeking community members to volunteer in many areas.

Volunteers add to our quality of health care by helping support patients / clients, their families, staff, visitors and the community.

There is a variety of activities where volunteers can assist.

Volunteers are asked to make a commitment to Peninsula Health for a minimum of six months and agree to undertake the required training.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer at any of our sites, please call our Community Participation Office on 9788 1536 or email [email protected]

Staff from the Paediatric Unit at Frankston Hospital held an afternoon tea and a tour of the unit on Thursday 24 October 2013 to thank donors in our local community for their support throughout the year.

Generous donations from Victoria Police Frankston - who participated in the annual Murray to Moyne fundraising cycle relay - the K.I.D.S. Auxiliary, the Magee family, Blue Steelers, Masters Group Mornington, Barefoot Grass, Vipropile, and Asthma Foundation Victoria (Frankston) enabled the Paediatric Unit to purchase items that will enhance the comfort of young patients in the Paediatric Unit.

Associate Nurse Manager, Frankston Hospital Child and Adolescent Health Unit, Clare Burns led a tour of the Paediatric Unit to showcase the items that had been recently purchased with the donations.

“Sometimes it’s the simple things that make all the difference to children in the Paediatric Unit,” says Clare.

“Whether it’s being able to enjoy a toasted sandwich after waking from a procedure; watching a favourite DVD, or spending “tummy time” on a foam therapy mat in the fresh air - these small things go a long way to help improve the health and wellbeing of children in the ward,” says Clare.

New purchasesSome of the new purchases include colourful foam play equipment and mats for the new outdoor play area; an awning for the outdoor play area to provide shade; a picnic table and chairs for the outdoor play area; two flat screen televisions for two single children’s wards; kitchen equipment including a microwave and a sandwich press; oxygen saturation monitors; and a fold out chair/bed for parents who wish to stay overnight with their child.

Building a healthier communityWe have been touched by the generosity of our local community who swiftly responded to our 2013 Autumn Appeals for Frankston Hospital and Rosebud Hospital.

With your generous donations, the Rosebud Hospital Appeal raised $15,305 for the new Medical Imaging Unit. This incredible support has helped Rosebud Hospital to purchase a brand new ultrasound machine, allowing staff to carry out a full range of diagnostic examinations on patients who present to the Emergency Department and inpatients staying within our wards.

The Frankston Hospital Appeal raised $7,650 which has helped the hospital purchase additional equipment and provide enhanced services so that our local community has the highest quality of care and comfort.

Thank you. We are privileged to have your ongoing support.

P.S. The Rosebud Hospital Appeal is still underway. We will soon be reaching out seeking further help to complete the expanded Medical Imaging area at Rosebud Hospital.

Our services would not be possible without the support of our community.

Peninsula Health would like to thank the generous community members who make a regular monthly donation as part of our Peninsula Partners program. Your thoughtfulness has enabled us to purchase additional and much-needed equipment which helps those we provide care for in the community.

With the help of regular donations from Peninsula Partners this year one of the pieces of equipment we have been able to purchase is a multi-purpose recliner chair (pictured right) for Frankston Hospital which is used by patients in busy specialty wards.

We provide care to more than 1,000 people in the community each day; which means your regular gift helps improve lives every day.

Becoming a member of our Peninsula Partners program is an easy and flexible way to support Peninsula Health on an ongoing basis.

Donating regularly helps us plan ahead and enables us to make the best possible use of your ongoing gift.

How much you would like to give each month is entirely up to you – whether it is $5, $10, or $50 – every donation makes a difference and is greatly appreciated.

You can securely provide details of the credit card or bank account from which your donation will be automatically deducted each month.

Your regular donation is secure and can be changed, paused or cancelled at any time.

Donations over $2 are tax deductible and at the end of the financial year you will receive a statement to assist you with your tax return.

If you would like to become a Peninsula Partner, please call us on (03) 9788 1502 and talk to us about it today.

Regular giving by our Peninsula Partners

A very pleasant Sunday afternoonMore than 170 residents from the Village Baxter retirement community in Frankston South came together for the annual Pleasant Sunday Afternoon concert on Sunday 22 September 2013 and raised $1,200 for Frankston Hospital.

The magnificent two-hour concert featured the Australian Welsh Male Choir who performed many classic songs and hymns including a stirring Welsh lullaby which had the audience spellbound.

Audience members were delighted by an invitation from the Choir to sing along to a traditional Welsh folk song titled Cyfri’r Geifr (Counting the Goats) and learnt three Welsh words to do so: wen (white), goch (red) and las (blue).

The event - which is now in its 22nd year - was organised by Lorraine Holt, President of the Residents Association Committee, and a wonderful team of Committee volunteers

from the Village Baxter who each put in considerable time and effort to make this event a huge success.

“It was a wonderful occasion with great entertainment and delightful community spirit with so many of our residents attending,” said Lorraine.

“Everyone was so pleased to be there - especially knowing that their donations were going to support Frankston Hospital,” she said.

Thank you, Village Baxter!

We wish to thank our valued supporters who donated so generously to our 2013 Rosebud Hospital Appeal.

The new Medical Imaging area we hope to build at Rosebud Hospital will be a major addition to the emergency services we provide and, importantly, it will allow more people to be treated more quickly and closer to home.

As a direct result of your generosity, we have been able to take the first step to enhance our medical imaging service by ordering an ultrasound machine (pictured right). The machine will be installed by Christmas, in time for the busy holiday period.

The ultrasound machine will allow staff at Rosebud Hospital to carry out a full range of diagnostic examinations on patients who present to the Emergency Department and inpatients staying within our wards.

This machine will greatly benefit any patient in need of an

ultrasound and we are honoured for your support in assisting us to secure this vital piece of equipment for Rosebud Hospital.

However, we still need your help.

We will soon be reaching out again seeking assistance to raise the remaining funds that are required to complete the Medical Imaging service at Rosebud Hospital.

With your assistance, we hope to be able to acquire a CT scanner and make renovations to the hospital, including the building of a special lead-lined room to house the CT scanner, and rooms for clinicians and technicians, as well as a sterile area.

The Rosebud Hospital Emergency Department treats 22,000 patients a year and admits 1,800 patients each year to the medical/surgical wards.

It provides access to medical care for the Southern Peninsula and the thousands of holiday makers

that visit the Peninsula every year.

We sincerely thank you for your ongoing support and look forward to partnering with you to build a healthier community on the Mornington Peninsula.
