Hello readers and welcome to the next exciting edition of our popular and inspiring magazine ‘The Achiever’ which celebrates the many successes and achievements of our students here at Pendle Vale College.

As a Sports College we cannot ignore the huge, once in a lifetime event, that is the London Olympics 2012. You will be able to read about our hugely successful

Torch Relay undertaken with a number of our partner Primary Schools and the many other Olympic events

going on at Pendle Vale.

We have been rewarding our students when they have shown the Olympic Values of

Friendship, Commitment, Excellence, Equality and Courage. These

are personal qualities and attributes that we see routinely from many of our

young people and are essential for future success.

The Diamond Jubilee of HRH Queen Elizabeth II was celebrated in College and a group of students were

lucky enough to attend the music concert on the Bank Holiday Monday outside Buckingham Palace. It was quite a challenge to explain the enigma that

is Grace Jones. I am thinking of doing my next Assembly whilst twirling a hula hoop around

my waist!

You will see more enriching experiences highlighted throughout the magazine and the contributions that

our students are making to the decision making within the College through Student Voice.

We are proud of the huge amount of individual talent at Pendle Vale. A special congratulations go

out to Aneila Afsar for her ongoing successes in Taekwondo and also to Lewis and Lauren Frobisher

who have attained National recognition for their achievements in Dancing.

Some of our year 10 students are currently undertaking the Bronze level of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. They have attended Colne Youth and Community Centre regularly and have been working on their navigation and campcraft skills.The students have also learned first aid skills and vitally, how to apply this in the outdoors. In March the 24 students spent a day in the Yorkshire dales walking up Pen-y-ghent. This proved to be a challenge and gave the students an insight into what to expect from their bronze expedition. All the students will go on to achieve their Bronze Award in Year 11. Well done and good luck to all.

Congratulations go out to Lewis and Lauren Frobisher

who are both excelling in the field of dance.

Both have recently been successful at the British Championships in Blackpool

where Lewis won both the British Juvenile Classical Sequence Championship and

the British Juvenile Modern Sequence. Lewis and partner Georgia Aspinall were

also crowned Boy Girl Champions at the national event. Lewis is captain of the

North of England Juvenile Team which won the Team match. Sister Lauren

also had success reaching the Semi Final in the all

Girl Championship, Modern Sequence and

the British Championship.

Talented footballer Ryan McGinty 8L has been having football trials with Manchester City and Manchester United Youth Teams.

He is really enjoying this valuable experience and hopes to be successful and one day even make it to the first team! Not to be outdone by his friend, Bradley Titherington 8P is having trials for Burnley Youth Academy. We wish both boys every success and

look forward to seeing them on Match of the Day in the near future.

items of uniform available for purchase from the summer onwards. The new uniform is available for everyone from September. All year 7 will be wearing it and all students by September 2013.

Students will be presented with a free new school tie when they wear our new blazer.

Your Council

A big congratulations go out to Dawud Afzal, Victoria Parr, Harisah Shah, Anisa Hussain, Emily O’Connor and Faiza Qayum, they have all been elected to our student council for the next 12 months to represent their fellow students. With the votes counted the students are now ready to take up their duties on the student council. The big issues that the student council will be working on this year include use of space in the building and also the use of mobile technology by students. In addition to the 6 directly elected members of the council there will also be 1 nominee from each year group’s PDL, 3 sports captains and 3 members of the Pendle Youth Parliament.

Diamond Jubilee

a wonderful once in a lifetime

experience

Students and staff represented Pendle Vale College at a Royal celebration when the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh came to Burnley Football Club’s Turf Moor stadium on Wednesday, 16 May 2012. The excitement mounted and when the Royal Party drove past there was plenty of cheering and flag waving. We all went to sit in the stadium where we were entertained by the Pendle Youth Orchestra, including staff and students from Pendle Vale College. At 2.15pm the Queen and the Duke came onto the balcony and we sang two verses of the National Anthem. It was a unique and special experience for all involved.

As part of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations Pendle Vale College were given 20 free tickets to attend the concert outside Buckingham Palace. We receive the tickets because of an ongoing project we are involved in

with a group called Mosaic. Mosaic was founded by HRH The Prince of Wales in 2007 to challenge the growing concern around the issues facing young people living in Britain today and aims to work with young people to create positive citizens of the future. Mosaic have worked with Pendle Vale College by delivering a mentoring and business and enterprise package. Students from Yrs 9-11 were chosen to attend the concert and had a

wonderful once in a lifetime experience.

Olympic We have

spent time this term celebrating the Olympic and

Paralympic games, in particular the importance of living the

Olympic values of Friendship, Excellence, Equality, Commitment

and Courage.

Year 8s made an application to become

Olympic Ambassadors and have been leading a range of

activities across the college and community. A torch relay took place from Barrowford School

via all the partner primaries to Pendle Vale. A large-scale collage of the Olympic rings and values has been created

with the help of carnival artist Bob Heath.

Vale Values is a chance for all students to demonstrate that

they are living the Olympic values. Certificates signed by Lord Coe himself have been

presented to those nominated by their teachers for going the

extra mile and showing true Olympic spirit through their

college life.

Celebrations

André showed his 3 gold medals and the Pendle Vale Olympic

ambassadors performed their

own torch lighting ceremony in a series

of assemblies.

We were visited by Olympic

bobsledders, André Lange (3 times gold medalist) and Nicola Minichiello (World champion), to celebrate 100 days to go to the

opening ceremony.

Our class got the chance to take part in a competition for The Geographical Times, our task was to think of a ‘World Problem’ and write an article about it expressing how we feel. I decided to write about the lack of water in Africa and the short-term

and long-term effects it has on children. Our articles were then sent off to The Geographical Times editors and Maleeya’s and mine were chosen to be published.

The newspaper comes out every season and each edition has a subject. This season’s subject is ‘World Problems’, the newspaper has articles written in it from secondary school students up to university students, teachers and even scientists,

I feel very proud to be a part of this.

How does water aid affect children in Africa?What is the problem?

Clean water is essential for life, but one in eight of the world’s

population does not have access to this. This and a lack of

safe sanitation, results in over two million people dying from

water-related diseases every year. The lack of clean water close

to people’s homes also affects people’s time, livelihoods and

quality of life. Over a billion people do not have access to safe

water and over two billion people lack adequate sanitation, as a

result 5000 children die every day.

How does this affect children?

Children throughout the world suffer because they do not have

access to safe water and sanitation. Their health, education

and family relationships are affected. In many countries

children, particularly girls, are responsible for the collection of

water. Girls as young as ten many take the main responsibility

for drawing and carrying the family’s water. The size of the

water container may vary with the size of the child, but each

litre of water carried weighs 1kg and may need to be carried up

to three or four miles Carrying such heavy weights is damaging

in the longterm for the adult woman, and for girls there are

even more serious implications given their physical immaturity.

In particular, there can be damage to the head, neck and spine.

In extreme cases deformity of the spine can lead to problems in

pregnancy and childbirth.

How does it affect education?

Collecting water is not only physically strenuous but extremely

time consuming. One of the most serious effects is that girls

are often not able to attend school. Many children who do

manage to go to school have low attendance and often drop

out. Both boys are girls are needed by poor families to help

either farming or in doing domestic tasks at home. They have

little time to play. The lack of adequate sanitation facilities in

schools also prevents girls from attending school, particularly

when they are menstruating. Of the 113 million children

currently not enrolled at school worldwide, 60% are girls. Girls’

attendance at school is increased through improved sanitation.

How does it affect health?

Children are most vulnerable to the diseases which result from

lack of water, dirty water and poor sanitation. In developing

countries each child has an average of ten attacks of diarrheoa

before the age of five. Malnourished children are more

vulnerable to disease and prone to diarrheoa, measles and

malaria. Diarrheoa is the second most serious killer of children

under the age of five, but in most cases it can be prevented or

treated. Children’s ill health places an increase burden of care

on the women or girls who look after them. This and the time

spent collecting water can prevent women from earning money

which can in turn mean they are unable to afford to send their

children to school. A lack of water also means that children

cannot wash often enough and suffer from diseases as a result.

These include skin diseases like scabies and eye infections

such as trachoma, the largest cause of preventable blindness

in the developing world.

What can we do to help?

Providing children with clean and accessible water and toilet

facilities changes their lives. Their health improves; they

have more time with their families and more regular varied

meals. They have time to go to school and gain an education,

sometimes they have time to simply play.

How can you help?

- Sing for water – Do a sponsored walk carrying

a bucket of water.

The annual Rotary Club and BAE Systems Technology Tournament was held on Friday 9th March at Nelson and Colne College. Eight year 9 students who are talented in design and technology were selected to take part in the day. The task for our two teams of four students was to produce a design portfolio and practical working model of a coin sorter.

Our year 9 students did us proud coming first and second against schools from across Lancashire. They had worked extremely hard to produce two fantastic design folders and two different coin sorters which were well detailed and worked brilliantly. The winners, Group 1 were: Nouman Nadeem, Darab Khan, Qurratulain Mehmood & Iqra Bano. The runners up, Group 2 were: Ellie Evans, Charlie Lord, Lidija Jefimovs-Lambrou and Joshua Klemp.

Able and Gifted students from schools across Pendle came to Pendle Vale College for the first Pendle Inter-School Debate, arguing the issues of the day in front on

Students from Pendle Vale College, Ss Fisher More College, Colne Park High and Colne Primet High showed off their debating skills in excellent fashion, using

rhetorical skills far beyond their years as they verbally jabbed and parried. The debates covered subjects as wide ranging as the Olympics, the voting age and television’s influence on young people, and the students showed excellence in their ability to research, construct arguments and deliver persuasive speeches.

Speaking during the presentations, the judges said, “We have been absolutely astounded and amazed by the quality of what we’ve seen. The students’

endeavour, tenacity and eloquence was remarkably impressive. It was like two classic boxers going at each other at times.”

After such a successful, exciting and thoroughly enjoyable night, organiser Mr Atkinson said “I was amazed at how speedily local people wanted to be a part of the night and the support we received from Pendle’s business, political and educational sectors has shown me what a special part of the world this is. The

students were simply fantastic and each and every one of them must be very proud their achievements. We’re already thinking about next year’s event and the

other schools are keen to host in coming years.”

Spotlight on Modern Languages

Students from Pendle Vale College were given the opportunity to practise their French speaking skills when they interviewed Blackburn Rovers’ midfielder Amine Linganzi. The students, who were on a language activity day organised by the Education Department at Blackburn Rovers Community Trust, interviewed the player about his life on and off the pitch in his native tongue. As well as interviewing Amine, the group of over 90 Year 9 pupils took part in football and dance sessions, as well using Ewood Park as the backdrop for a short behind-the-scenes film, with commentary in French. The students used video cameras to film their French presentations at various points around the ground, before returning to the Education Centre to edit their work.

Pendle Vale’s visit follows another successful languages day in January when 110 pupils completed a similar day’s activities with the Trust. On that occasion, the pupils had the opportunity to interview Rovers’ Academy goalkeeper Christopher Dilo. Both the visits from Pendle Vale took place on the school’s Raising Achievement days. Mrs Bullock, Curriculum Leader for Languages at Pendle Vale College, said: “Having the opportunity to develop and consolidate language learning skills beyond the classroom, in a football environment, is an invaluable experience for young people in today’s global market and one they will remember for some time. “At Blackburn Rovers, the languages day really brought learning French to life and the students were delighted to be able to be involved and to practise asking questions to a native French-speaking footballer. We are already looking forward to returning next year!”

Berlin 2012 Im April, während den Osterferien haben 15 Studenten vom Jahrgang 10 und 9 vier Tage mit Frau Bullock, Herr und Frau Frohock und der Direktor sich selbst, Herr Wilson in der deutschen Hauptstadt, Berlin verbracht. Dieser war unser erster Besuch nach Berlin und war ein überwältigender Erfolg! Der Besuch bestand aus Aspekte der deutschen Sprache, Kultur und Geschichte und die Studenten haben einen Einblick in Hauptstadt zu wohnen gewonnen. Höhepünkte enthielten einen Stadtbummel, wo wir die berühmte Sehenswürdigkeiten, wie das Brandenburger Tor, das Denkmal fur die ermordeten Juden Europas, den Reichstag, den Fersehturm und das grösste Kaufhaus Europas KaDeWe gesehen haben. Vielleicht am denkwürdigsten war der Besuch nach Sachsenhausen, den Sitz einer ehemaligen Konzentrationslager im Norden der Stadt. Im Grossen und Ganzen war dieser ein sehr unvergesslicher Besuch für Alle!

Berlin 2012

Watch this space.Initial links have been made by Miss Chaney with the English department at le Collège Jules Michelet in Creil, the twin town of Nelson. Some year 10 students have been selected to have links with students at the school over the summer. In September the Year 10 class will be able to email the French students in lessons and also in their own time.

French Speaking

Berlin 2012 In April , during the Easter holidays 15 students from year 9 and 10 spent four days in the German capital Berlin along with Mrs Bullock, Mr & Mrs Frohock and the Headteacher himself, Mr Wilson. This was our first visit to Berlin and it was a resounding success. The visit combined aspects of German language, culture and history and gave our students an insight into city living. Highlights of the visit included a tour of the city, taking in famous landmarks such as the Brandenburg Gate, the Holocaust Memorial, The Reichstag (German parliament building), the TV tower and Europe’s largest department store KaDeWe. Most memorable of all was the visit to Sachsenhausen, the site of a former concentration camp north of the city. All in all this was a very memorable visit for all involved!

We started the Accelerated Reader scheme in September with all our year 7 students. We felt it was important to promote reading within Pendle Vale to enhance the students’ education experience. We felt if all students could read to an acceptable standard then they would have no trouble accessing the curriculum as they progressed through the college. Students are rewarded for their success and we hold regular achievement assemblies where we celebrate the success of the students. We have different categories where all levels and abilities have a chance to win. When a student has read a million words they become automatic members of the exclusive millionaires’ club. At the moment we have four members of this club. Adam Livesey, Ifrah Khan, Bilal Abbas and Samiyah Farid.

Every year we celebrate World Book Day at Pendle Vale by

turning the LRC into a book theme. Previous years has seen it

changed into Hogwarts, a chocolate factory and a wonderland.

This year we turned it into a Viking Village to celebrate the brilliant

writing talents of Cressida Cowell and ‘How To Train Your Dragon’.

Students were asked to come dresses up as a character from the

books and they took part in different events based on the book. Ms

Bullock from MLF came down and taught them to speak Dragonese,

Mr Hardwick dressed up as a Viking warrior who told them his life

story and how he was still searching for Valhalla.

The students had a fun filled enjoyable day reinforcing the

importance of reading.

The science department have recently played host to a series of lunar and meteorite samples – moon rock to you and I! It was a massive opportunity for our students to get up close to these samples which have been collected by NASA astronauts and brought back nearly 250,000 miles to Earth. These unique rock samples have enthused and inspired the students with their science learning supporting our Apollo 13 scheme of learning, although ironically Apollo 13 never made it to the moon!

World Book Day March 1st 2012

In May we welcomed children’s author Tommy Donbavand. We were very lucky to be one of two schools in the area to be chosen for the launch of his new book ‘Virus’. Tommy is the creator of the ‘Scream Street’ series of comic horror books. His audience was the whole of year 7 and guests from our local partner schools including children from Barrowford,

Bradley, Castercliff and Pendle Community High School.Tommy immediately engaged his audience and had the children rolling about with laughter. He read from his new book ‘Virus’ and answered questions from the audience. At the end of the event Tommy was available to sign books and have his photo taken with students.

The Biology Challenge.

Encouraging an interest in biology beyond the school curriculum.

Stimulating curiosity about the natural world.

Over a hundred keen and able Pendle Vale students took part

in this year’s Biology Challenge. This is the third year we have

competed in this national contest, and we achieved our biggest

success yet. Fifteen of our students were awarded a national

level award, with many others also achieving great scores in the

two online tests. Over 30 000 schools took part in the challenge

this year and our students achievements show that we are up

there with the best! Special mention must be made of our top

scorer Jamie Birtwistle (Year 10) who achieved a Silver Award.

Students also achieved 5 Bronze Awards, 3 Highly Commended

and 6 Commended. Year 9 students did particularly well to

achieve awards as they were competing with Year 10s. We will be

expecting great things of the Year 9 students when they compete

in the challenge again next year! Our highest Year 9 scorers

were Dawud Afzal and Lidija Jefimovs-Lambrou – well done and

congratulations to all who took part.

Staying Safe

Students really enjoyed watching a car being cut up by the firemen (with sparks and glass shattering!) and working with a journalist from the Nelson Leader to create a newspaper article. They also created road safety campaigns, wrote reports and came up with a news report using speaking and listening skills. Interacting with all the professionals was eye-opening for some; learning about the consequences of speeding is a particular example.

The learning was dynamic and a variety of learning styles were employed in both English and Maths. Students were encouraged to work in groups and utilise their speaking and listening skills to produce the best outcome. In Maths students had to create a safer fictional town by including traffic calming measures. Students had to work out the most economical way of making the town safer.

The highlight of the day was a presentation in the auditorium where students met to share their learning. Each group was able to experience what other groups had learnt and produced as the best from each group were showcased. Altogether, it was a productive and enjoyable experience for all.

Year 9 raising £300 from a cake sale and a non uniform day for Cancer Research.

for Save the Children with a non uniform day.

Combining the Sport Relief mile with year 7’s fundraising resulting in over £1050 raised for Sports Relief and Muscular dystrophy.

Other fundraising has seen our students raising money for a defibrillator for the college site, and also supporting both the Poppy Appeal and National Aids Trust.

Our Community

In May a group of year 9 students took part in a visit to Winmarleigh Hall rewarding positive contributions to Pendle Vale College. The students experienced activities such as the zip wire, giant swing, canoeing, abseiling and go-karting. All had a fantastic time even though the weather was definitely not on our side.

This year we believe our annual exhibition of year 11 students’ work is stronger and more exciting than ever.

The young people have been following a new course in the BTEC Certificate and have been involved in applying their knowledge, understanding and skills to the “real” world of work within the creative industries. This is evidenced in an

Interior Design project where fabulous wallpaper and co-ordinating soft furnishings were designed and created,

working to a specific set of criteria. Throughout the project students were expected to ensure their designs met the

client’s brief and that they were market able and fit for purpose. I think we can agree that they have

succeeded on all fronts!

Many staff and visitors to college have confirmed this in their favourable comments and requests to purchase some

of the work on display.The students have also had the opportunity to work with a practising artist Bob Heath to create a piece of large-scale

art work to enhance the college environment. Working with an experienced artist who makes his living from

commission work gave the students a valuable insight into how to approach a large scale project and how to work

through problems as they arise. I think we can agree that it is another job well done!

All in all the year 11 students of 2012 can be very proud of their efforts and we just hope that this is reflected in

their results. They deserve to succeed and Mrs Burton and Mr Edwards both wish them well.

Art and Design Exhibition 2012

Bringing the house

down...As part of the Year 11 BTEC Performing

Arts course, the students’ had to complete an assignment that required them to

devise a performance surrounding the theme “Isolation”. Students were split

into three groups and they created their own plays, with their own interpretation of

isolation. Students worked independently and directed,

produced and performed their plays. It was a very exciting challenge for the students as we decided that they would perform in the

house of our Chair of Governors, Cllr John David.

The plays were performed in the style of promenade theatre. This meant that the audience walked around the space and were a part of the performance with

the actors. Each actor drew attention to themselves in a particular way and

stimulated the audience to move around with them, visiting different rooms

along the way.

Staff watched the students performances which were extremely well received.

Students enjoyed the experience and at the end of their performances, got the

opportunity to explain the ‘method behind the madness’. Each performance ended with a question and answer session and allowed the audience to ask questions

about anything they were uncertain about. This gave the students chance to delve into more detail about their individual

characters. It was also a great opportunity for their understanding of the characters to

be assessed in a real life setting.

Well done to everyone involved and thank you to Cllr John David.

Students have been involved in rugby, netball, football refereeing and wheelchair basketball coaching as well as helping out on the climbing wall.A special mention to Holly Mayor 10P, Natalie Hopper 10P, Jamie Sharples 10P, Ashir Sajid 10I, Sam Boult 10G, Subhaan Shabbir 10Y, Paddy Nolan 10G , Ashleigh Tatersall 10O, Alhamna Jabin 10Y, Jessica Whitehead 10ROur year 9s in particular have been proactive in umpiring netball for the local primary schools. Special mention to Lauren Frobisher, Aidan Marshall, Lidija Lambrou-Jefimovs, Ellie Evans, Charlotte Rigby, Aisha Shabir, Georgina Jones and Amina Amin.

Once again as we reach the end of another busy year there have been many positives to look back on:

Results...Cross CountryDespite horrific weather conditions our cross country runners excelled. Special praise goes to Matthew Dutton and others including Gerson Da Silva, Ashleigh Tattersall and Harry Hargreaves.

Shooting Stars - Sporting Achievements

HockeyYear 7: Both boys and girls finished in 4th place enjoying their first experiences of Hockey.Under 14 Boys: The team played some very good hockey and were very well organised and disciplined. They eventually finished in third place. Under 14 Girls: The team played well and thoroughly enjoyed the tournament. They finished in fourth place.

Under 16 Boys: The under 16 boys played Park High School where they were narrowly beaten in an exciting match at Pendle Vale. The boys played very well displaying some excellent team work and team spirit. Under 16 Girls: Despite the terrible conditions the girls played very well and enjoyed the event.

Cricket Cricket has started positively with good

wins for all year groups. Year 8 have

beaten West Craven, Park and Fisher

the Lancashire cup. Year 9 beat Primet

in the league. Year 10 have beaten Park

in the league and Fisher More in the

Lancashire cup.

FootballThe highlight of the year must be the year 8 football team achieving double success winning both the league and the 7-a-side tournament. Thanks to Mr Dillon for all his hard work with the lads over the year.

BasketballCongratulations to Sam Boult, Jack Gribble and Sam Crowther who all successfully passed the basketball officiating course. In a series of competitions with other schools our stand out players were: year 11 Faisal Sohail, year 10 Matthew Dutton, year 9 Tyler Martin and year 8 Matthew Heap. The girls also had 2 competitions where Ashleigh Tattersall was outstanding. Wheelchair basketball has also been a big hit with Sam Boult and Ashir Sajid undertaking external training to run wheelchair basketball matches and also to help out at the Lancashire Schools games in July.

Rugby LeadershipWell done to Natalie Hopper, Paddy Nolan, Liam Hunt, Austin Ralph and Holly Mayor who have all qualified as rugby leaders and who regularly help officiating at local primary tournaments.

Netball Report 2012The Year 10 netball team came 2nd in the league. The girls also played in the end of season tournament and came 4th.

New Intake Evening

Tuesday 2nd October

Pendle Vale College, as of Monday 17th June 2012, are

the ‘Secondary School of the Year’. In the Education Awards 2012 hosted by Burnley College a very impressive glass trophy and

certificate were presented to Mr Steve Wilson accompanied by Mr Matt Renshaw and our School

Sport Partnership Manager Mr Neil Stewart.

The citation drew attention to the year on year improvement in the standard of achievement in the College, the excellent

support provided to students and, in our role of Sports College, the high quality of sporting opportunities that are provided

for our partner Primary and Secondary schools and the local community as a whole.
