Bias binding Notes: This is not a tutorial for a pencil skirt, it is a quick and easy method for how to make a pencil skirt form a men’s button shirt. This tutorial as with all of my tutorials, assumes a basic level of sewing skill. Steps: 1. Take the following measurements a. Waist (natural waist, ie measure yourself at the smallest part of your waist) divided by 2 and add 3 ¼ inches (1 ¼ inches for seam allowance and 2 inches for darts) b. Hip (not necessarily what you think is your hip, this is the widest part of you) divided by 2 c. Length you would like the skirt to be from your Waist plus 1 ¼ inches (seam allowance) 2. Lay out your shirt. You want it to be at least as wide as b. If you have a curved hem on the shirt you’ll need to cut it straight. Then measure up from that newly cut line the length of (c). If you can’t get it as long as you want because of the size of the shirt you may just need to compromise on length!! Now cut it out in the shape below, so that the waistline is the width of (a), curving up slightly at the edges. When you cut to the seamline, be sure to cut a curved line.

Materials:

• Men’s dress shirt, bigger the better!

• Bias binding

Notes:

• This is not a tutorial for a pencil skirt, it is a quick and easy method for how to make a pencil skirt form a men’s button shirt.

• This tutorial as with all of my tutorials, assumes a basic level of sewing skill.

Steps:

1. Take the following measurements a. Waist (natural waist, ie measure yourself at the smallest part of your waist) divided by 2 and add

3 ¼ inches (1 ¼ inches for seam allowance and 2 inches for darts) b. Hip (not necessarily what you think is your hip, this is the widest part of you) divided by 2 c. Length you would like the skirt to be from your Waist plus 1 ¼ inches (seam allowance)

3. Turn your skirt inside out and sew up the side seams. Note if like me your shirt was very close to (b) already, then you will only need to sew the cut part of the side seam. If however you had a really big shirt you will need to sew the whole side seam as obviously the whole side was cut! You will also need to sew your darts, which will be 1 inch each and placed at about the positions I’ve shown below

4. Now hem the bottom

5. Now it’s waistband time! You have two options, you can either do a simple straight waistband, or do what I did and face it on the inside. If you want to face it on the inside, then take out some bias tape and sew it to the waist line with right sides together, then turn the bias tape inside so that now you are looking at the wrong side of the skirt, and either handsew the binding in place, or use the straight stitch on you machine to stitch the bottom edge of the binding

6. And there you have your pencil skirt

7. If you would prefer a simple waistband then you can cut it out of the sleeve fabric. Cut a rectangle that is 3 or 4 inches tall and as wide as (a)

Then sew the two pieces together (wrong sides together) and fold in half (right sides together), and close the edges

Then turn it the right way round, iron and attach to skirt

And then you have a pencil skirt with a basic waistband! Note: you will probably need to take a button from the sleeve as the waistband closure, or you could sew in trouser hooks instead.
