he 100th anniversary of the prestigious Windsor Bowls Club will be taking place on 15th June. All thanks to 21 gentlemen who met at the All Saints Parish Church on 2nd November 1911 to discuss the

feasibility of establishing another Bowls Club in Penarth.

Since then the club has focused on bringing quality facilities with a friendly atmosphere to everyone in Penarth and the surrounding areas. Whether you would like to bowl socially or participate in competitions, the Windsor Bowls Club caters for all types of skill sets so why not join a team.

There are also ladies teams to enter so don’t be mistaken that this is a game purely for men. The Windsor Bowls Club has many loyal and accomplished female competitors that attend tours throughout the year to enjoy and take part in this established sport.

Alun Daniel at The Windsor Bowls Club said: “We want to encourage new people to join with us, you can take part in social or competitive bowling in a friendly and welcoming atmosphere.”

The club has also held a ladies under 25’s Home Internationals event that saw teams from England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales compete at the Windsor Bowls Club for their chance to win the Junior Bowls International Series title.

Over the years the Winsor Bowls Club has also carried out their fair share of charity work donating thousands to organisations such as the Marie Curie Hospice, the R.N.L.I and Ty Hafan. The club is proud and happy to raise money for charity organisations in the area and hopes to continue these gestures in the future.

The common misconception that bowls is not for everyone has been proven wrong with the Club’s ability to welcome all ages and genders with open arms.

Why not drop by the Club and have a chat with one of the members to find out more about the delights of competitive and social bowls in a friendly and welcoming environment.

icola Williams is a sculptural artist, part of Cardiff Metropolitan University’s forthcoming graduate show, in the heart of

the city. Here she reflects on her work and discusses the current climate of the art world.

“I have been at Cardiff Metropolitan University for 4 years, studying Art since my Foundation Year through to the end of my BA in Fine Art.” As Nicola’s artistic practice developed, she chose to work with materials such as plaster, resin, wax, wood and metal.

Her final collection and exhibition work Nicola was keen to engage with Bronze, and she committed to take on new expertise in metallurgy in the university’s foundry to produce the 3D pieces.

“This is a very extensive and manual process using wax, ceramic shell, and the metal itself. Unexpectedly the method worked with every single piece…” the resulting forms are strikingly blue and stalactite-like, each very unique.

Nicola’s creative approach raises questions of artistic intervention: the controlled action of enabling a series of spontaneous processes.

The free-flowing current of water was the only influence in the material’s transition from liquid to solid; and in treating the set bronze with a potassium sulphate solution the metal was then coloured using the gas from a concentrated solution of ammonia. A completed sculpture makes “the invisible become visible”.

Nicola, who also works as a freelance Art Teacher around Cardiff primary schools, describes her experience of being a student during the recession… “Our final-year course leader, David Fitzjohn, had a lot of focus and guided us wonderfully through all the changes. He managed to rally the students together.”

“There are lots of merges and cuts going on within the art education system in general.” UWIC becoming Cardiff Met, one of the first steps in a new direction. The art school itself has undergone some restructuring; its programme will soon be based on three core disciplines or roles – ‘Artists, Designers and Makers’.

Whilst the nature of art practice at Cardiff Met is very ‘hands-on’, Nicola also “loved all the lecture programmes during her studies, and enjoyed writing and researching my dissertation.”

Nicola is now considering an MA in Art History at Bristol University, and looks forward to moving into deeper theoretical learning.

She is passionate about museums and galleries, and the relationship between art, people and the curator.

“Communicating through a visual medium can sometimes create confusion for the viewer. It can be challenging to grasp the concept of the work. This is a persistent issue within the modern art world, as interpreting art is a like reading in a different language. Devices such as the museum and the gallery aim to aid these difficulties.”

“The week of the exhibition, the entire uni building will be a gallery.” 150 students will be displaying a hugely varied accumulation of painting, sculpture, print and photography.

See the graduate show at Cardiff Metropolitan University, Howard Gardens, 9th -16th June.

he concept of the make-over has become common to many of us. After all how we dress or the way we look reflect

who we view we are. The same exists with how we decorate our house and the logical extension of this is our room outside ‘The Garden’. For those of us who lack green fingers or the time to work in the garden, it can be difficult to find a way to express ourselves in what is normally the biggest room in the house.

Eden Landscapes celebrate 10 years of business this year in which time they have developed a reputation for good quality design and construction of gardens in the Cardiff and Vale of Glamorgan area. They offer a multitude of services that can enhance the image of your garden. Eden work closely with the clients throughout each individual project, from the very beginning they work with you, offering a range of design packages and tailoring your garden to suit your needs, lifestyle and budget. If you have clear garden plans of your own then we can help with the project and bring those ideas to fruition.

Depending on what you need from your new garden, Eden provides the full range of services. Including the installation of Patio’s and Terraces, Natural Stone Walling, Brick retaining Walls, Timber and composite decking, New lawns, Planting Schemes, Fencing, water features and garden lighting for those warm summer nights. Eden can also offer full installation of artificial grass for a year long natural look, without the burden of maintenance.

Eden services extend to the front of the house where as a Marshalls registered driveway installer they can design and create your new block paved driveway. A Marshalls installed driveway ensures it’s been built to last with a superior finish.

The enthusiastic team are from the local area, and work closely with you throughout the whole process, ensuring you maintain control of how your garden blossoms. The team take pride in their work and attention to detail is at the forefront of their minds during all garden or driveway projects.

When your garden is complete, be it your mini oasis as a relaxing escape from the hassle of work, or a playpen for the children to grow up in, it’s a place where you and you’re family shall be reflected in your outdoor room.

“Thanks again for a very professional, efficient and considerate operation. The

whole team worked very well, and we especially appreciate the way you made the whole

project hassle free.”

Pram life – when less is more…

During the pre-crawling phase, babies’ feet don’t have bones, just soft cartilage which can easily be moulded into the wrong shape if constricted. Even socks or sleepsuits that are too tight can lead to problems. As for shoes – barefoot is best, so feet have the freedom to wriggle and move which is essential for foot development. But when it’s cold, Ogam Igam’s buttersoft elasticated pram bootees from Robeez are just the job!

Floor life – fun on all fours…

When your baby starts to crawl and shuffle, pre-walking shoes will protect those active but still-delicate little feet against bumps and scrapes whilst allowing feet to develop naturally. Pre-walkers are soft and flexible and feature a special rubber bumper on the top of the shoe for added protection and grip. Ogam Igam has an adorable selection from Start-rite, Garvalin, Agatha Ruiz de la Prada…

Step by step to freedom and who knows, maybe the Olympics!…

Once your child is walking with confidence it’s time for their first pair of walking shoes. These are vitally important to your child’s foot health, so make sure you come and see one of Ogam Igam’s trained fitters, who will spend time making sure your child is fitted properly. Young feet grow rapidly and tend not to hurt like adults’ do when squeezed or chafed by ill-fitting footwear, so do remember to have them measured regularly.

We offer a great range of high quality shoes that come in whole and half sizes and a choice of width fittings, to ensure the best possible fit for your child. The sizing factors-in the all-important growing room, whilst fastenings range from buckle to hoop-and-loop, allowing precise adjustment.

From childhood to teenage…

Ogam Igam has great footwear, from many brands, for your growing child’s every need – boots, trainers, wellies, slippers plus a huge range of school shoes… Let each amazing step be stylish and comfortable!

Hey now, Listen Up Ladies!

Walk in comfort and style. We also have a stunning range of women’s shoes, sandals and colourful leather bags. Carefully selected from top brands Fly London, El Naturalista, Josef Seibel to name but a few.

Our offers…

10% off when you mention ‘Penarth View’ in store (ends 31.5.12) and there’s always a 5% credit return for our ‘Foot in the Door Club’ members.

Like their first crawl or that first tentative toddle, your child’s first pair of shoes marks a milestone in their development. That is why they have to be just the right pair, at just the right time…

t is Pencerdd’s 10th anniversary this year and they have just started to stock a range of high quality Freshman and Faith guitars. These award winning guitars

are designed in the UK and less widely available than other brands, and you have a shop right on your doorstep supplying them.

It’s no wonder these guitars are widely desired by many when the likes of Matt Cardle, The Kooks, Roy Harper and Sandi Thom swear by them.

Husband and wife team Adrian and Jo Lewis, opened their music store in late 2002 when they were the only independent harp retailer in the UK. Since then, two other harp stores have opened in the Cardiff area but that hasn’t stopped them from following their passion for music.

At the end of this month Pencerdd will receive the first of a new model of harp, which is being made especially for them in the Far East, and should be much more affordable than other models. So get down to the store for your chance to be one of the first to experience the full flavour of such an exclusive and sensational instrument.

Adrian has been playing guitar semi professionally for over 40 years and ran Penarth Folk/Blues club for over 8 years. Visiting “roots” musicians are never disappointed when the pair go all out and put on their extraordinary concerts from time to time.

Adrian and Jo’s expertise in guitars and harps mean there is no better place to buy, whatever your musical tastes may be. They are proud of the variety of stock they offer, with guitars from £50 - £2000 and harps from £700 - £17000. But it doesn’t stop there. They also supply a range of folk instruments from bouzoukis, autoharps, accordions, mandolins and banjos, with a wider range of sheet music than any other music store in the area.

Their passion for music clearly runs in the family, with their daughter Mali a harpist and pianist who graduated with 1st Class Honours from the Royal College of Music in London. She currently teaches private students in Penarth and plays bass, keyboard and guitar in a pop/rock band Race Horses. The band has just signed a recording contract and released their first single last week.

So drop in to Pencerdd and delve into their vast range of unique instruments to experience some of the rare delights the music world has to offer.

he founder of Pura Vida Boardriders Jim Brooks-Dowsett, one of only two commercial

board shapers in the UK, is creating a positive buzz in the world of windsurfing. With over 10 years experience in product and creative design, he has become a passionate believer in progressing windsurf, surf board and kite board development.

Jim, a local resident to Penarth and an ex-pupil at Stanwell School, started his craft from an early age: “I got into surfing as a school boy, but I couldn’t afford the kit as I wanted to put money towards windsurfing kit, so I decided to make a surf board to save money.” With very little knowledge on how to go about building a surfboard, he adapted the design of another board, threw himself into the building process and at the end of it he not only had a board that he himself learnt to surf on, but: “The board has come back to me six times for repairs from different owners and as far as I know it’s still going strong today.” Not bad for a first attempt.

Skip forward a couple of decades and Jim has graduated from Cardiff University, opened up a massively successful shop in Penarth and happily built his own workshop where he has plenty of room to get cracking on building his custom boards. He couldn’t have timed the whole thing better: “Now is the perfect time, cost of equipment has sky-rocketed so people can’t afford kit, and I am able to provide a top-end product at a much lower price.” Not only is his custom-board brand well on its way to huge success, with the run up to the Olympics, he has also opened a second shop at the Olympic sailing academy in Weymouth.

Jims’ reputation in the industry has blossomed with him gaining respect from some of the top international riders. So much so, he has made a selection of his boards available for testing across the UK coast. Pura Vida has a long list of successful team riders. In Wales alone they have the likes of Stanwell School geography teacher Rob Sheldon and his twin brother Duncan testing the boards at their local beach breaks, carving up the waves in true wave sailing style.

he current team consists of Clive Pearson as manager, Andy Escott is in charge of the

workshops, Nigel Stanton is M.O.T. inspector, Laren McDermot is a technician and Jake Gaughn is currently an apprentice. A sense of family pervades in the company too - Clive’s young daughter, Alyza, is an honorary ‘Junior Mechanic’ and likes spending time with him at the garage.

“Pearson’s was opened in 1946 by my grandfather, Harold Pearson; my father took over from him and eventually I took over,” Clive says. “Our client group includes the great-grandchildren of my grandfather’s original customers.”

“I’ve seen technology change unbelievably even over just the last few years; but we do keep up with the latest diagnostic equipment.”

A recent addition to the garage is a motorcycle centre, with M.O.T. (class 1&2). Pearson’s are the sole company

in Penarth to carry out this service. Another notable development at Pearson’s is that Class 1,2,3 & 4 M.O.T. services are now available.

As well as new offers there are many on-going deals of great value at Pearson’s; - all M.O.T.s are discounted and all parts sold have a 10% discount.

Longstanding members of RMI (Retail Motor Industry) Federation, Pearson’s have also become part of the Good Garage Scheme with a five-star rating and shining reviews. Users describe their work as going “above and beyond expectations”, mentioning company qualities such as “excellent customer service”.

Pearson’s serve a wide customer-base, with clients travelling from beyond the borders. Catering to all models and makes, they are a popular and reliable choice.

ad news…it’s probably more difficult to get a mortgage than ever before.

Which is where we come in.

Mortgage Search Go is a mortgage brokerage that was established in 2008, and trading in Penarth since October 2011. Despite what you may have heard or read, there are lenders out there that are willing to lend, and there’s a lot of competition for business. The skill is in knowing where to look.

Which is why we’re called Mortgage Search Go. We’ll search for your mortgage, then go and get it.

Q. What types of mortgage do you arrange?

A. All types. Purchases, re-mortgages, first-time buyers, buy to let, you name it. We also handle secured loans, bridging, and commercial finance.

Q. Which lenders do you use?

A. We have access to the whole

John Pearson, Director

market, so that includes “high street” lenders, plus others that are more specialist.

Q. How can I find out if I’m eligible for a mortgage?

A. Just ask! We have bags of experience, and we’re quite happy to discuss your requirements on a ‘no-obligation’ basis. If you do decide to proceed, we’ll make sure you receive a written illustration before you make any commitment.

Q. If I decide to go ahead, how long will it take to get a mortgage agreed?

A. An initial decision in principle can be obtained very quickly, usually the same day. After that, we’ll put the paperwork together to enable the mortgage to be offered in the shortest possible time.

Q. Do you charge a fee?

A. Not for the initial consultation. If you decide to proceed, and if a fee is to be charged, we’ll discuss this with you upfront. The fee will be no more than £295, payable when the mortgage is paid out. In other words, we only get paid if your mortgage completes.

Q. Anything else?

A. If you get the chance, visit our website. It’s full of information, especially the “mortgage finder” where you can instantly get live quotes on hundreds of mortgage products.

Mortgage Search Go is a trading style of The SJ Group Limited. Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage.

Good news!Mortgage rates are low

orthern Star Bespoke Jewellery are experts in designing and creating beautiful bespoke diamond jewellery. Selecting a diamond piece can be quite a daunting prospect if you have never bought one before. However, Northern

Star are able to guide you through the process from beginning to end. ‘”Firstly, we like to talk the Customer through the characteristics of a diamond, of which there are four; colour, clarity, cut and carat weight. Once Customers understand this it helps them choose their stone according to their budget”’. As the service is bespoke, the shop which has recently moved to Windsor Arcade will arrange for a selection of stones to be brought in for the client to choose from. ”We find that bringing in a selection of stones for a customer to view, really helps them to see the differences between a better quality stone, or a brighter diamond and helps them to make their final choice”.

With much emphasis on Fair Trading, Northern Star use reputable Diamond Specialists who can trace each stone

back to the mine it was sourced from. ‘”It is important to us to buy ethically sourced stones and we have recently developed a relationship with Ruby Fair, an ethical Gem Stone supplier who have their own mine in southern Tanzania.”’

The benefits of using a bespoke service mean that Customers are able to get exactly the piece of jewellery they had in mind. Using an up-to-date jewellery design programme, the CAD Matrix, enables the piece to be shown in a 3D format to the customer, before going ahead to being made.

Northern Star Bespoke Jewellery pride themselves on making exquisite jewellery at very reasonable prices ‘”The price of a bespoke piece of jewellery with us is usually in-line with what you would find for a piece directly from the high street, except you have a custom made piece which is exclusive to you”’.

Due to the nature of the business Northern Star do recommend booking an appointment so that an appropriate amount of time can be spent with each individual customer.

he Glamorganshire Golf Club was the second course to open in South Wales in 1890, when the Earl of Plymouth granted land to its founding members.

History was made again when a member devised his own scoring system in

1898; the ‘Stableford Scoring System’ invented on the Glamorganshire green, went on to be adopted all over the world.

This sense of heritage permeates the tranquillity of the clubs’ landscape; and overlooking the sea, it could be seen as where the rolling Vale countryside really begins. The Club’s Secretary/Manager, Brian Williams describes the great activity going on within the club’s peaceful atmosphere:

“Visitors come from all over Europe, the US and Japan. The Ryder Cup having boosted much interest in Welsh golf. Entrants for ‘Open Day’ golf competition draw golfers from all over South Wales, and around 280 members gather on the green to compete on a typical ‘Captain’s Day’.”

The ‘Baffie’ (the name of which stems from a pre-20th century type of wooden club) is a major competition, held this year on 23rd September, and is open to all ‘scratch golfers’.

The Summer Ball is another great occasion. “We have a lot of social events throughout the year, showcasing live bands and holding dinners.” The Club also manage to accommodate regular golfing days for local charities to generate funds.

The Club received a Junior Golf Accreditation in 2011 and is hosting the 2012 Welsh Schools Championship and the Welsh Boys Championships in 2013. In addition to nurturing youth-level golf, the 2014 Welsh Open Seniors is also being held here.

“Golf is a sport you can play all your life,” says Williams, citing team ethic and friendship as chief elements, which is possibly why so many retired sportsmen play at the Glamorganshire.

“Tuition is available from the professional attached to the Club and his assistant. They are based at the on-site shop where all major brands of equipment can be hired, and there is a special service centre for Powerkaddy golf trollies.”

The Club’s comprehensive website(www.glamorganshiregolfclub.co.uk) has excellent features for golf-players, and an interactive calendar displaying available tee-time and the many events taking place.

The club is open every day of the week, with Thursday and Friday reserved as ‘society days’ for visiting groups of 12 or more. At present vacancies in all categories (men’s, women’s, juniors’ etc) are available with discounts for all members, and extra-low rates for juniors, on a sliding scale to the not-so-junior age of 29!

There is an excellent in-house restaurant for members and guests. The club house has disabled access and mesmerising views across the course towards the Bristol Channel. All visitors to the Glamorganshire Golf Club can be sure of a warm Welsh welcome!

brand new dog grooming service called Bow Wow’s has recently opened on Glebe Street, and

their main aim is to offer a more personalised and friendly service for all dog lovers.

Sisters-in-law Nicola Eveleigh and Karen Kneit, opened the salon on 2nd March with a vow to be open, honest and informal while providing a stress free environment for the dogs and their owners.

After many years as close friends, Nicola and Karen decided to open the business through their own passion and love for dogs. They are keen to stand out as a special and unique kind of dog grooming service and steer away from the usual behind the scenes production many others offer.

“Our grooming tables are out in the open so the public and the customers can see exactly what we’re doing” says Karen.

“We have dogs ourselves and we know how important they are to the owners. We want them to be under as less stress as possible and we treat each one individually. Our business is not a production

line and we understand each dog has an individual personality and we are here to make them feel as comfortable as possible.”

Nicola and Karen are also looking to introduce other benefits over the coming months. They are looking to set up a micro chipping service to ensure the dogs can be identified if they go missing, and pet portraits after they have been groomed.

They will be offering an option for the dogs to have their photograph taken when looking their best after being pampered at the salon. A Puppy Package will also be introduced to help the puppies become accustomed to grooming with micro chipping included for just £30.

Nicola and Karen take the health and safety of their shop very seriously, and they possess all the necessary and up to date risk assessments required to ensure the dogs are in a clean and safe environment during their visit.

You can book an appointment or just drop by to speak with Karen or Nicola and see how they can make your dog look and feel fabulous today.

Often lying on your back with your knees bent up is a comfortable position as it maintains the lumbar spine in a neutral position. Physiotherapy treatment may then include a combination of mobilisation or manipulation techniques to restore normal movement and an exercise programme to maintain range of movement and improve strength and core stability.

“This is where we are so lucky to work beside John Bruno,” says Karen. “Our core stability programme

dovetails into his Pilates classes and many patients chose to attend these classes as a way of maintaining their exercise programme after treatment has been completed, as self management is an important part in prevention of recurring back pain.”

ast week it was reported that the government has again delayed its proposed overhaul of adult social care.

Whilst the forthcoming white paper, originally promised for the “spring” is now scheduled for early June, it is likely to side-step the thorny issue until the autumn/winter of 2013.

Once again, this means that the onus is being put upon individuals to make their own arrangements when it comes to funding long term care stay in residential or nursing homes, despite the foundations laid down by economist Andrew Dilnot in July 2011. Mr Dilnot proposed that elderly and disabled people should have their care bills capped at a suggested amount of £35,000.

Our view at Broadlands Partnership is that whilst the proposals may well benefit countless people at some point in the future, prolonged procrastination will do nothing to allay people’s concerns in the short term.

Lesley-Sharon Wood, who has recently joined Broadlands to provide expertise in the areas of Long Term Care and Equity Release says “ Clearly whilst Mr Cameron

says he wants to put social care centre stage, George Osborne does not – mainly because the treasury has no money – and while the government tinkers round the edges of the problem, real people still need care. We understand that cuts have to be made across the board but elderly people have borne a huge burden for far too long.”

Future generations will almost certainly get a better deal but in the meantime, there are hundreds of thousands of elderly people either in care homes or receiving assistance at home and for most, any reforms will simply be too late, they just don’t have the luxury of time.

Under the current system, the only way that families will cope is by getting impartial, expert financial advice to help minimise the upheaval and confusion that is inevitable when arranging long term care.

The cost of the initial meeting to discuss your concerns are borne by Broadlands so if you or a loved one is facing the uncertainty around meeting your care costs please contact us on 029 2070 1600 for a confidential appraisal of your personal situation.

he Penarth community Choir is a project of amazing creativity and growth in its very first year. The group has

been led so far by musical director, Clare Gardner, who followed her creative instincts in order to set it up.

Clare explains; “The idea for the choir started bubbling when, as a peripatetic singing teacher, I was being increasingly asked by my contacts if there was a local choir.”

“I realised then that Penarth was lacking a Community Choir, accessible to all, and decided to take a plunge to form one with the support of my home church Cosmeston.”

“Our first rehearsals were in my front room. The choir then progressed from house to music studio, which was also outgrown -now over twenty chorists practice at Stanwell Road Baptist Church, the church are providing sponsorship for the choir, as does Cosmeston church.”

“I would love to see the choir grow even more. Our only request is that people come as they are.” No singing experience is required to join, nor the ability to read music. Experienced singers are welcome too – shared knowledge is invaluable. “We are also looking for

soloists and new ideas.”

Professionally involved with singing, drama and dance groups, and working for Cardiff and Vale Music Service (CAVMS), Clare is currently pursuing a music fellowship under the tuition of Miriam Bowen. “John Murray (also of CAVMS) of has offered excellent guidance.”

Clare is passionate about developing true musicianship with a holistic rather than pressurised approach. “Well being and fun are at the forefront of our ethic.” she says.

Sessions are relaxed but structured, and caring for the voice is integral to practice. “The idea is to create a safe, supported environment teach people to use their individual instruments –their voices.”

Longer workshops to strengthen singing skills are also run; they focus on breathing technique, vocal production, singing as part of a choir, dealing with stage fright, boosting confidence and song interpretation.

Although there is no substitute for one-to-one tuition, singing groups are far more dynamic than private tuition, they are also more sociable and affordable.

The group is always willing to try out musical ideas and suggestions from participants. “We are newly

embarking on a variety of music from swing and pop to classical, with our wonderful accompanist Mali Llewellyn.”

Clare envisages an inclusively-led choir, the process of forming a ‘Steering Group’ is underway. She hopes to form many off-shoot choir groups, and plans to establish a youth choir for ages 8 and over (accompanied by adults).

The group are affiliated with innovative local scheme Network Team (4a Greenhouse) who are showing dedication to raising money for the choir. “We would love to have more involvements with other community groups.”

A community event for the charity Bali Life (www.balilife.org) at the Paget Rooms, Friday 16th November, will showcase the choir’s work and involve local dance and other groups including the Cardiff and Vale Youth Jazz Orchestra.

The choir currently rehearse at Stanwell Baptist Church, 7.30pm Monday. Sessions cost £2.

oliday time is almost here. Manager of Washington Pharmacy, Jane Soltys, has a wealth of professional

advice if you are planning a summer getaway this year.

Don’t forget to take your medicines

Before you jet off into the sun allow time for prescriptions by requesting any repeat medication sooner rather than later. It’s also a good idea to take a list of your medication in your hand luggage as an inventory during your time away.

Vaccinations – don’t leave them to the last minute

Come and check with us which vaccinations you need for your holiday. Allow time to take the full treatment. Check whether anti-malarials are needed and make time to obtain a prescription.

Preparing to fly

We also stock various travel-sized toiletries which are ideal for washbags at airport security. Reduce the risk of DVT by wearing compression flight socks which can be purchased from the pharmacy. If you suffer from travel or motion sickness, ask our advice for suitable remedies.

To stay healthy and make the most of your holiday call into Washington Pharmacy where our friendly, knowledgeable and helpful staff will give you advice and take care of your needs.

Protect yourself properly but enjoy the sun

Having been a pharmacist for thirty years I am relieved to see that cases of severe sunburn have reduced as people become more sun-aware.

At Washington Pharmacy we offer an extensive range of sunscreen products including types suitable for sensitive skins, specialist skin preparations, and very high factors for fair skin. To protect your eyes, we stock a wide range of affordable sunglasses in styles for all ages.

Look after your skin following exposure

If your skin needs moisturising and revitalising after time in the sun, indulge in our sun care products containing Aloe Vera and also our Manuka Honey Apicare range.

The dreaded tummy bug

Upset stomachs are a common problem on holiday. Good hygiene is essential so remember to wash your hands frequently. Include some hand sanitiser and a few oral rehydration sachets in your travel kit just in case. In countries with unclean water, stick to bottled water and check how salads are washed and prepared. Remember also to increase your water-intake, especially in hotter climates.

Bug attack

Insects abroad can be irritating! We have several types of insect repellent to ward off unwanted visitors.H

or Cleaning is a professional cleaning company with a team of highly trained professionals

who specialise in providing exceptional interior and exterior cleaning, including carpets, curtains, furnishings, ovens and now, rugs.

“Cleaning rugs is a specialised job,” says Cor Cleaning’s Graham Linnard. “To get the best results for delicate Chinese, Turkish and Persian silk or wool rugs you need the right equipment. We have invested in a special dip tank and have been through the necessary training to ensure we can do a good clean.”

If you have a rug that needs cleaning, the Cor team will come to your house and go through a thorough inspection before removing it for the cleaning process.

“We take photos and fill in a checklist of information so that any flaws or damage are noted before it goes into the rug spa,” says Graham. “It is hard to get a thorough clean with the rug in situ in the home, so we’re glad to be able to offer this special service to our customers.”

Sparkling ovensWhat’s your least favourite cleaning job? Chances are you’ll say cleaning the oven. Cor Cleaning will provide a professional domestic bio-degradable, non-caustic oven cleaning and valeting service which will leave your cooker in near showroom condition.

“We use specially built oven cleaning tanks which remove all traces of carbon from removable parts of the oven,” says Graham.

“Other cleaners claim to offer a bio-degradable, non-caustic service but still use caustic chemicals in their dip tanks. You can be assured that our service is 100% safe: no fumes, no odours and no harmful chemicals.

“We ensure our work is carried out with minimal disturbance and what’s more, our eco-friendly oven cleaning means your appliances and oven are

completely safe to use as soon as we’ve finished,” says Graham.

Cor Cleaning carries out work for both the domestic and commercial markets and provide an expert and professional service. No job is too big or too small.

Inspired? Take a look at these available properties with development potential

The moment Rebecca Villard and Rachael Davies set eyes on this dilapidated Victorian terraced property, they knew they could achieve something special. Having completed a couple of property refurbishments in Cardiff they were ready for a new challenge. The property had been converted a couple of decades before but bad execution meant the occupants of the middle floor had to walk through the bathroom to reach the kitchen! One year on, the apartments are unrecognizable. ‘Steve, our builder, has been absolutely amazing’ says Rebecca. ‘He came up with some fantastic ideas and has created three very desirable apartments’.

The property consists of two one bedroom apartments to the ground and second floor with a larger, two bedroom apartment on the first. Each is finished to a very high standard with the clean contemporary lines of the bathrooms and fully integrated kitchens blending seamlessly with the classic period features such as coved ceilings and fireplaces. Beautiful solid oak doors and floors give the apartments a luxurious finish and the ground and first floor apartments each enjoy a private garden area.

15 STANTON WAY - £475,000

Cari and Leigh Millinship moved into their dated 1950s bungalow in Stanton Way in February 2010 with visions of a perfectly formed modern family home and cliff walk location. A few months later, the couple found themselves in the middle of the coldest winter period on record, huddling under the duvet in their partially built bedroom, wondering whether they had bitten off more than they could chew!

With summer just around the corner and their project complete, Cari, Leigh and the boys are finally reaping the benefits. Finished to an exceptionally high standard, the property exudes style with a mix of polished porcelain and solid oak flooring, and premium kitchen with integrated Siemens appliances and family dining space.

The property has been re-wired, internally plastered and externally rendered, extended and includes new powder coated aluminium double glazing and bi-folding doors. With a bathroom that features a freestanding bath and TV, there is certainly an element of luxury, and the newly landscaped rear garden features a decked area ideal for entertaining.

With the boys growing up fast, more space is needed and the family are already looking ahead to the next project.

ut as they grow up, and see that perfection and timeless beauty is demanded of them, making little girls feel

special is a challenge. It should not be, all little girls are always special. Perhaps what is needed is a boost of confidence, to hang out with their friends and feel special together.

Enchanted, is a unique, magical shop, which can offer those made of sugar and spice, one day of magic. For an hour or two, Enchanted takes little girls on a fantasy ride, and makes the dream of being a princess tangible. These makeover parties begin with a fruity cocktail, to build up the excitement before they move into the party room, where dreams are realised. Their dreams slowly become reachable, as the girls delightfully titter and giggle to themselves, lost in their fantasy’s come true.

Enchanted party packages are tailor made to suit a variety of ages and are ideally aimed towards girls aged 4-12.If a special someone is having a birthday, a small gift is left behind for them to joyfully open up, the smile on the face widens as more and more of the fairy’s secret gift is revealed. But it is not the end. The girls are given access to a dress-up rail, allowing them to express their inner selves. They finish off relaxing at one of the beautiful dressing tables to enjoy a sparkly hairstyle and a funky manicure ending with a sprinkling of fairy dust. All dressed up and ready to party, they return to the party room. The rest of their time is spent dancing, singing, or just having fun together.

Enchanted welcome young girls into a paradise of pink, offering hairstyling, funky bright nail art, sparkling tattoos, lashings of glitter and a sprinkle of fairy dust where they are transformed into princesses, fairies, mini pop stars and divas with lots of singing and dancing!

Enchanted are a company who, like the Fairies and the Angels, work in the business of dreams. There is nothing in this world that is better than a child walking out of an experience, holding onto memories that will last a lifetime.

Many of us still enjoy a physical copy to hold in our hands, the continuation of the newspaper and magazine industry is proof of that; there is innately something more personal with a printed brochure, catalogue or newsletter. More thought has been put into its creation and one can appreciate the time and energy that has gone into producing it. While promoting oneself online is relatively easy, getting yourself out there in the physical realm is slightly trickier and with many forms of

here is something innately annoying about human nature sometimes, we strive for things to be clean and tidy, and yet by just living our lives we accumulate clutter. Whether it’s a one bedroom flat, a student house or a family of four, clutter is an unfortunate inevitability.

The never-ending cycle cleaning brings pleasure to few and with limited time in our daily lives other things will almost certainly take priority. LJ Executive Cleaning can give you that peace of mind, taking away the weekly burden for heavy cleaning duties providing each client with a clean, healthy and happy home.

Founded by Kerry Jones, she runs a tight ship with a highly trained crew. It can be a little disconcerting inviting a stranger into your home, but LJ offer the human touch to their work. You are greeted at the door by a uniformed individual, in a combination of red unisex trousers and a round neck red Tshirt, The LJ logo proudly on display. The uniform proudly bearing red: Colour of

the Dragon, reflecting their Welsh patriotism, indicative of their work in the local community. Exemplified by plans to develop an executive uniform, for local aspiring and established designers to create in a competition.

For extra piece of mind all team members are CRB checked, knowing that the company demands the highest quality of workmanship and ethics. Convenience for the client remains an essential tenant of Kerry and her crew, guaranteeing flexibility and tailoring each service to every client. This flexibility extends to services on a commercial basis, and the people at LJ are also experienced in the cleaning of tenant housing, offices and surgeries.

As the clutter dissipates, and an extra burden is lifted from your shoulders and your home begins to sparkle all those little extra stresses flutter away. The long term benefits of a consistently clean house can free up more time for work or to relax, contributing to a healthier lifestyle. A clean house is the best way to compliment a clear mind, a healthy body and a happy family.
