A leading South Wales supply teaching agency has celebrated its tenth anniversary by treating one of its most long-standing schools to a visit from high profi le Welsh and Lions rugby stars.

At the presentation at Ashgrove School in Penarth to mark the anniversary, Wales number 10 Dan Biggar and Lions star and former Welsh captain Ryan Jones presented ESS with a signed number 10 Wales jersey and ESS co-founder Kevin Moyes awarded the four category winners of ESS’ birthday card design competition with high street vouchers.

The winners were Cai, Ruby and Grace from Ysgol Erw’r Delyn’s Primary section

Ashgrove School has been using ESS staff since 2003 and will merge with Ysgol Erw’r Delyn and Ysgol Maes Dyfan in November 2014 to become Ysgol y Deri. ESS co-founder Kevin Moyes also donated fi ve I-Pads to support students in their development and learning at their new school.

Since opening in August, treasured vintage treats are back on the menu.

Finite International Logistics are busy celebrating their first year of business in Penarth. With over 60 years’ experience in the logistics and warehousing industries, Steve Lerway and Rob Leering established themselves in Penarth in September 2012 and the business has gone from strength to strength.

As dental and facial aesthetics practitioners Smile Studio Penarth prepare to celebrate a decade in the business this month at local venue Hamptons, Practice Owner Dr Sarah Cuffin explains how different it could all have been if she’d followed her childhood dream of a career in music.

“I loved the violin and musical theatre as a child and later I actually spent some time in the States following that dream, but eventually music and drama became more of a hobby as I became more interested in dentistry.”

Sarah’s burgeoning dental career took her to London, Liverpool, Bath and Cardiff, working for employers such as Bupa, James Hull and Boots Dental Care before settling in at the Penarth practice. “I learned a lot and met a lovely crowd of people, particularly at Boots, and in fact many of them now work for me here at Smile Studio” says Sarah.

Sarah’s brief stint in the US left it’s mark though, providing her with inspiration that has remained to this day: “There was a phrase, a sort of motto that I picked up there, and that was ‘work hard, dream big, smile always and good things will happen’ - I’ve found it to be very true over the years.” Sarah’s formula for success has certainly worked well so far - she has been nominated for a Smile Award for the fourth year in a row

in 2013, and hopes to build on her previous success as a runner-up. “I’m absolutely over the moon about it” says Sarah. “It’s a huge honour just to be nominated for an award, as the competition is very tough.”

The journey from aspiring young musician to award winning dental practitioner (and busy working Mum) has not been without its challenges however, particularly in the recent economic climate: “it’s been a long haul with lots of ups and downs - the recession was a

huge learning curve that we all had to deal with, but I’m happy to say we’ve come out of it stronger than ever.”

But Sarah acknowledges that many small businesses have not fared as well. “We’re very proud to be a family-run business, particularly as it’s become more and more rare” says Sarah. “We’ve seen a number of local businesses disappearing because of the economic climate, which is always very sad. We’re currently looking at how we can take part in the Shop in Penarth (SIP) discount card scheme, as I think it’s in the interests of all the local businesses in Penarth to work together.”

Sarah attributes the practice’s success to one thing - her team. ”Without a doubt it’s down to the fantastic people here. I’m proud to say that many of them have been here longer than I have, including Huw who has been here over 20 years. The girls behind reception and most of the team that I brought over from Boots have remained with me for over 12 years, so we’re all very close.”

The practice has also benefited from keeping up with the latest technology and techniques, from moving to electronic records back in 2004 to installing state-of-the-art intra-oral cameras which allow patients to see the dentists at work. “We’re always looking to improve and provide a better service for our patients, whether it’s by introducing special offers or installing the latest equipment” explains Sarah.

Sarah and the team also find the time to be active in the local community and regularly take part in charity work. One cause that is especially close to the Smile Studio Team’s hearts is Motor Neurone Disease. “The previous dentist at

the practice, David Lennox, very sadly passed away from the illness” explains Sarah. “He was very well loved at the practice, and the team and I have done all sorts of things to raise money for Motor Neurone Disease charities, including climbing Snowdon.”

So after a decade of success, what’s next for the practice? The launch of the Refresh Skin Studio brand has opened up a whole new range of facial aesthetics services at the practice, from muscle relaxant treatments and dermal fillers to laser rejuvenation, but is there more on the horizon?

“Yes I do have some big plans for the future, but for the moment it’s probably Penarth’s best kept secret!” says Sarah. “All I can say for now is that we’re always aspiring to something bigger and better.”

GORGEOUS GLASS

The fused and stained glass studio in Penarth is run by Angelina Hall who’s created some fantastic festive delights which will make unique and treasured presents.

New creationsThis Christmas, Angelina is launching her range of slumped recycled glassware, turning wine, champagne and beer bottles into clocks, candle lamps and cheese serving platters.

She says: “It is very satisfying designing and creating a lovely item and knowing I am doing my bit for the environment.

“Much of the green glass we all recycle still goes to land� ll and it feels good to be able to use this and make something original with it.”

Angelina uses a special technique to create the glassware from bottles which are fl attened and then decorated with glass jewels and copper or silver wire to make extraordinary, one-off works of art.

Huge range of designsIn addition to her new range, whether you are looking for a bespoke stained glass window or a unique pair of earrings, Angelina designs and produces items that suit all tastes and budgets.

After completing a BA honours degree at Bristol in ceramics, Angelina developed her interest in glass and has been designing and working with the medium for more than 20 years.

She says: “Working with glass is inspiring. The range of textures and colours are incredibly exciting and I never tire of the endless possibilities.”

New Health Diagnosis Treatment for Penarth

Washington Pharmacy has teamed up with a Cardiff based medical software company at the University Hospital of Wales to off er the diagnosis of skin conditions over the internet. Patients can book a private appointment at the pharmacy for an initial consultation and assessment based on digitally recorded images of a patient’s skin complaint. Images recorded at the pharmacy are reviewed by a Consultant Dermatologist who prepares a diagnosis and treatment plan, and a prescription if appropriate, within 2 working days. This private service covers rashes, itches, moles, hives as well as hair and nail conditions.

Its hard to believe that November is upon us and we are into the winter season. The good news is that the autumn/winter collection at ‘Gingers’ is very varied and colourful giving that really cosy feeling that we like to feel at this time of the year.

Once again Tunics are big matched with cords or leggings; dresses are also strong and there are some really super knits by poppy in fabulous jewel and coral colours really warm! Colours that are great this season are corals, wines and cobalt blues altogether a much brighter winter season on off er to brighten up the most miserable day.

Accessories are still strong with much more bolder and colourful jewellery coming onboard - great for the ‘Christmas Season’ coming up. Tops are now arriving for the Party Season and they are a good and inexpensive way to jazz up a nice pair of black trousers. The waterproof raincoats

have also now arrived in great colours; chocolates, aubergine, wine, olive to name a few.

A new arrival on the restaurant scene, Golden Orchid, off ers a feast of food to Thai for!

The Asian cuisine at the eaterie at 46 Plassey Street, Penarth, is a stylish range of sumptuous dishes fi t to lay before a king. It off ers good value in comfortable surroundings and the choice is extensive and great value for money.

Owner Kenny opened the family-run restaurant in April this year. He learned his trade in Hong Kong, picking up his expertise in Chinese dishes naturally through repeated practice and good guidance.

Not long ago, determined to keep on learning his trade, he turned his hand to Thai food and the menu at Golden Orchid off ers the chance of unique dishes you won’t be able to sample anywhere else in the area.

Thai dishes form the bulk of the menu.

But this is a restaurant keen to expand its horizons. And yours!

There are Chinese infl uences and the twin attractions mean the restaurant is unique in Penarth in off ering a taste of two cultures.

The specialities are Thai green curries, red curries, massaman curries - with a choice of squid, king prawn, duck, beef, chicken and fresh vegetable with each curry.

Of course there are plenty of other treats too. Highlights include:

• Chicken with basil and chili

• Crispy beef with sweet chili Thai sauce

• Roast pork Char Siu

• King Prawns with ginger and chili

• Deep fried tofu in homemade sauce

Plenty to choose from and plenty to satisfy the pickiest palate.

Its name was chosen in tribute to Thailand. The orchid is the national symbol of the country - and the fl owers are revered The ‘Golden’ comes from the country’s Buddhist traditions. Buddha is always represented in gold and so the name was a natural choice.

Golden Orchid is open six evenings a week - Tuesday to Sunday from 6pm to 10.30pm, and is shut on Mondays.

Penarth’s fi rst dedicated Iyengar Yoga Studio is now open, with nine classes each week to choose from and monthly workshops at the fully equipped studio on Herbert Terrace. Many of Penarth’s residents have already taken advantage of the new space, with over 60 students attending weekly, during the fi rst month of opening in September.

Thomas & Belinda recently returned to South Wales after living & teaching Iyengar Yoga in Stavanger, Norway last year. As Certifi ed Iyengar Yoga Teachers, Thomas & Belinda can guide students of all ages and physical conditions to a yoga experience that is profound, intelligent and transformative. The Studio off ers classes covering all levels, from the total novice, to the more experienced yoga practitioner. What happens in a yoga class? Yoga is a progression through eight diff erent stages of practise, the third stage, asana (postures) makes up most of a yoga class. In a beginners class the focus is on standing poses, which introduce fundamental techniques, increase fl exibility, develop

strength & stability, bringing about general health and wellness. As a student builds skill and understanding, other postures are introduced including, twists, back bends, forward bends, inversions and restorative poses.

Classes are run as a course to help give a well rounded experience of what yoga has to off er. People often ask us, ‘is coming once a week really enough to make a diff erence?’The answer is, Yes! The benefi ts of yoga have a cumulative eff ect when a regular practise is maintained and after just a few weeks we have had pupils remark that they are sleeping better, have more energy, less body aches and pains and generally feel better within themselves.

Yoga helps to improve the health of all body systems; including the strengthening of the nervous system, reducing stress and anxiety. People have recovered from disease, been rehabilitated after injury and reduced the risk of injury through the regular practise of yoga.
