    COMMANDERS CORNER . . .

Summer is finally ending. The days are shorter. Themornings are cool and crisp. The mercury takeslonger climbing. Fall has arrived. Football Season ishere. The trees are changing color.

We need to take into consideration a few things in

order to make sure that we are safe in all ouractivities.

Update your gear bags for the changingweather.

Wear layered clothing on cool mornings. The mornings may be cool, butthe afternoons may still be quite warm.

Keep a jacket in your vehicle. The temperature can fall quickly after dark Watch the weather. Get a good weather briefing. Have a back up plan.

Thunderstorms are still a risk. Keep an eye on the temperature-due -poinspread. Fog can develop quickly after dark.

Keep flashlights in your vehicle and in your gear bag. With the shorterdays, a mission may not end until after dark. Remember to check yourbatteries. A flashlight with dead batteries will not help you.

Remember to pack a red light to preserve your night vision. Maintain your night currency. It gets dark a lot sooner. Brush up on your cross wind landings. Some days may be gusty. Remember to get your home heating system checked for proper operatio Check your automobile belts, hoses and antifreeze before it gets cold. Check your automobile and aircraft tire pressures as it gets cooler. With

the cooler temperatures the pressure may be lower. Remember to change your Smoke Detector batteries when the time

    changes. (November 6)

With a little planning we can all enjoy this time and remain safe.Jim GosnellCommander

    SAFETY

Good news! November is the last month of the official hurricane season. The GulfCoast has been spared so far this year, but RINA, which is lingering off the eastcoast of Mexico, is a reminder that the season is still active, and we shouldnt let

    our guard down just yet.

The fall weather will bring us some low nighttime and early morningtemperatures, therefore we need to start using the special heater that we have forour aircraft when it is in the hanger. Even though the Pell City airport is officiallyclosed during the week for the installation of new runway and taxiway lighting,N261CA is in our hanger and will most likely remain there until the construction iscomplete. Remember to use all of our best cold weather techniques for the nextfew months. If you happen to get assigned to fly an aircraft that isnt hangered,

the best option is get the FBO to preheat the engine compartment if possible. Iknow that many airports in the south dont have this capability so the next best isto turn all switches to OFF (double check this please) and pull the prop through afew turns to distribute some oil in the engine. Start the engine and maintain a lowRPM until you start to see some oil temperature rise on the indicator. This maytake several minutes in chilly weather and by no means should you do the run-upuntil adequate oil temperature is indicated. Be sure and check the POH of theparticular aircraft to make sure you havent missed anything.

Another item that fall brings is shorter daylight hours. When DST ends onNovember 6th, even an after-work flying excursion will most likely end up withsome night flying. Be sure you are current (at least 3 takeoffs and landings to afull stop in the previous 90 days in official night time conditions) but it would begood to also be proficient in night flying. If you havent flown much usinginstruments primarily as your reference, it might be a good time to schedule oneour excellent CFIs to fly some night cross-countries as well as landing practice.

It also wont be long until structural icing may also be a concern especially if youare filing IFR and will be flying through some clouds on the way to your

destination.Well talk more about that in a later publication. In the meantime, STAY SAFE!

    STAY SAFE,Ron Harlan, Safety Officer

    Just Say it!

Every year the Wing DOV asks check pilots to identify items that can be improved by the pilots of the wing. Foas long as I can remember communications has been at the top of the list each year. One area the FAA is very

concerned about is operations at controlled fields, specifically, ground operations. It is in this environment thatwe have the greatest chance of a conflict with another aircraft. If you think about this, it makes sense. Where ayou going to be close to other aircraft on a regular basis? If you answered the airport you are correct. Now,consider this question: Why would an airport have a control tower? The control tower is there because there ara lot of aircraft moving in, out, and around the airport. While operating aircraft in this high traffic environment, wmust be on top of our game.

Communications at the controlled field must be short and accurate. There are areas on controlled fields whereyou must reply in a certain way. The most important of these is a clearance to hold short of a runway. If acontroller gives you a clearance to hold short of a runway i.e. CAP 161 taxi to runway six via hotel and holdshort The pilot MUST read back CAP 161 taxi to runway six via hotel and HOLD SHORT. In this situation, thwords HOLD SHORT are very important to say. If the controller does not hear those words the controller will

keep asking that the pilot read back the clearance. When I have heard controllers issue a clearance such as thand the pilot responds with Roger or CAP 161 taxi to runway six I have the image of the controller in thetower being the late comedian Sam Kinision from the movie Back to School. The scene that I recall from thismovie is Sam as the professor, screaming at Rodney Dangerfield who is a student in Sams Contemporary

American History course. Sam keeps yelling at Rodney SAY IT, SAY IT. I know I am dating myself, but thisYou Tube link will make it very clear: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hafaW1uLE-4

We must read back taxi clearances, specifically hold short clearances. Consider this important point: if you croa runway hold short line without a clearance, you will be violated. The controller does not have the option to sayahh CAP 161 looks like you have crossed the hold short line there. I need you to turn around and clear therunway. Dont worry there were no conflicts. This is not the option or at the discretion of the controller. They wibe filing a report with the FAA; this is mandatory. This year we have had a few fellow CAP pilots receive one of

these violations. That is one reason I am bringing this particular item to your attention.

The FAA and the AOPA have made it their mission to get the word out that this is very important. The worstaircraft accident to ever happen was a runway incursion between two 747s, resulting in many deaths. There armany ways for pilots to learn the proper terminology. There are online courses available to pilots. Next week, thFAA and AOPA will be conducting a seminar at the Southern Museum of flight called (Say Again) RadioCommunications Done Right. I highly recommend that all pilots and observers attend this seminar. The detailsare below. As pilots it is our responsibility to know how to navigate, and it is also very important tocommunicate!

IF ATTENDING, PLEASE READ . . . .I am passing along an e-mail from Lt. Col. Austin Landry, Commander Squadron 132, in regard to the AOPA SafetySeminar to be held at the Southern Museum of Flight on Wednesday Nov 2 from 7 -9 pm. One of our ALWG CAPmembers, Major Ladde Mayer, will be recognized at the beginning of the evening by the FAA for his 50 years of serviceas a pilot and mechanic.

CAP 132 is planning on attending in CAP uniforms in support of this recognition of Ladde. Ladde has been an activemember of CAP and has given many hours to many squadrons across the State and has served on the ALWG staff. 50years of service as a pilot or a mechanic is quite an achievement.

If you are planning on attending and would like to also help recognize Ladde's achievement consider wearing your CAPuniform to the event. What a great opportunity to showcase CAP and recognize this event. Here is Austin's e-mail to members of CAP 132:

As many of you may know, there is an AOPA safety seminar on Wednesday, November 2 at 7:00 pm at theSouthern Museum of Flight. The topic is Say Again, Radio Communication Done Right. However, in conjunction with that, one of the members of the Civil Air Patrol Central Alabama Senior Squadronwill be honored that night. Major Ladde Mayer will receive two FAA prestigious awards. The first is the Wright

Brothers Master Pilot Award. By presenting this award, the Federal Aviation Administration recognizes the ef-forts of pilots who have followed and continue to follow the precaution and awareness of safe flight operations. Most of all, the FAA recognizes pilots who have contributed and maintained safe flight operations for 50 or moreconsecutive years of piloting aircraft.

The second award is the Charles Taylor "Master Mechanic" Award. It is described by the FAA Circular as "...themost prestigious award the FAA issues to persons certificated under Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations(14 CFR) part 65. The award is named after Charles Taylor, the first aircraft mechanic, to recognize individualswho have exhibited professionalism, skill, and aviation expertise for at least 50 years in the aircraft maintenanceprofession as "master mechanics".

Please join me and others to honor Ladde and celebrate with him. After discussions with Ladde, it has been de-termined that the wear of the CAP uniform is recommended for our squadron members at this event. The recom-mended uniform is the "Class A" with coat and tie. If you do not have that, then any other CAP uniform other

than flight suit or BDU would be appropriate.

Please attend this worthwhile seminar and come out to show support and honor one of our own. I look forward to seeing you there.Austin Landry

Character Development and PAOs CORNER . . . Page

Character DevelopmentThis months Character Development lesson was on the importance of respecting those that are authority. Recently in preparation for a Sunday School lesson at church, I came across an account whoccurred July 4, 1976, where 103 Jewish hostages were set free during a raid at an airport in EntebbUganda.

The commandos rushed the room where the hostages were being held and yelled in Hebrew, Get dowCrawl! Understanding the language, all of the hostages, with the exception of two, followed the commato get down. The commandos immediately opened fire, killing the seven kidnappers and two of thostages.

You may be wondering why the two hostages were killed. We will never know for sure why they did nfollow the order of the commandos to get down, but chances are they let their curiosity get the better them, or they simply thought that they didnt have to follow the orders of these strangers who suddenburst into the room.

We can learn a lesson from their fatal mistake. Always respect those in authority by obeying thdirectives. It could be a matter of life and death.

    Seniors Corner . . . Page

    Attention all SENIORS !!!

We are trying to find new ways of supporting the three mission of CAP. As we all know, they are AerospaceEducation, Cadet Programs and Emergency services.

It looks like we are coming along with Aerospace education and had a few senior members complete training in th

last fiscal year. From recent news releases, other units are well ahead of us now at 100% completion for theirSeniors. Our unit is currently at around 30% so we have lots of room to improve on these numbers. You cancontact Cindy Bennett, she would be more than happy to provide a hard copy of training materials for everyone thneeds to get their Yeager Award. This material is also available online. If you want to start right away and use thatnew IPad or Kindle reader, the book can be downloaded in Eservices.

I think our cadet program is one of the best in the area, so please do all you can to support them in any way theyneed.

Our major focus for Seniors is Emergency Services. We are lacking in all mission crew positions and want to do alwe can to improve these numbers. We have decided to change our Senior meeting format starting in January, asyou know there is only a couple of meetings left this year. Starting January 12 th, 2012. Our focus for the first Quar

of next year is to get as many people as possible trained in Mission Scanner. It is the building block for all othercrew positions. It will start with BCUT training and work form there. We will also have one Saturday a month wherwe will get as many people as possible together to fly training mission in order to practice whats learned. Below ithe schedule for Q1.

We will then follow the same basic format the next quarter to complete as many Mission Observer positions aspossible, from there we will work on other staff positions.

An important note here is that we are going to start meeting every 2 weeks instead of the 2nd

    and 4th

Thursdays.Although most months it still will be only 2 meetings, it will allow us to get 3-4 extra meetings a year completed. Itwill also make it easier to remember the weeks we have meetings. For me it will be the weeks I do not get paid.

Please think about this training and decide if you want to participate. If you want to join in, please email me [email protected] and let me know. I will try to start putting together some training materials and also make surewe have enough chairs. I will also be emailing out some study guides for review before the classes start. I promisewe will do our best to make this a fun activity for all. Our goal here is to ensure we have plenty of resourcesavailable when we are called upon. Its the reason we all joined !

    The Paul E. Garber Award

The Paul E. Garber Award is given to Civil Air Patrolmembers who complete Level IV of the Senior Member

Professional Development Program. It recognizes thosmembers who have dedicated themselves to leadershiand personal development in the CAP. This award wasfirst given in 1964 and honors the late Paul E. Garber. Garber was a noted aviation pioneer, curator emeritus the National Air and Space Museum, and early champiof Civil Air Patrol.

Civil Air Patrol is the Auxiliary of the United States AirForce. CAP has a three-fold mission. It includesemergency services, the cadet program, and aerospac

education. CAP professional development providestechnical skills and leadership training to senior membeage 18 and over to support CAPs mission. The prograenables these adults to develop these skills while

roviding a vital public service to our nation.

s the member progresses through the program, he or she completes five increasingly complex trainingvels. Each level requires the member to become more involved in CAP activities, master skills in one of

echnical areas, and develop leadership ability. As he or she completes these levels, the member receiveswards, chances for promotion, and selection for more important roles within CAP.

he fourth milestone is the Garber Award. It is earned after receiving the Grover Loening Award. In additiomembers must inform their communities about CAP. They must train fellow members in a variety of coursehey must serve in command or leadership positions for at least two years. Finally, they must complete CA

mid-level leadership course, Region Staff College, or approved equivalent.

f CAPs 35,000 senior members, less than 200 earn the Paul E. Garber Award annually. Receipt of theward and completion of rank and time-in-grade requirements also makes the member eligible for promoti

    Cadet Corner . . . Page

October has been a busy month for the cadets of Pell City CAP. The first cyclef this years WESS training was held Oct 14-16 at Vigilant Warrior in Titus, AL. Weave a total of 20 cadet and senior members committed to some level of trainingr staff positions during this years' cycle. Everybody was very busy this firsteekend and the next training weekend will be Nov 11-13, but before we get

ere, we have to face the Iron Man competition in Auburn on Nov 4. This yearseam is comprised of C/2Lt Daniel Smith, C/CMSgts Allaina Howard, Michaelorwood, and Jonathan Watkins, C/MSgt Allison Howard, and C/SrA Davidhompson. The competition promises to be very interesting and I know they haveeen training hard. According to the www.areyouanironman.com web site, therere a few new changes to this years challenge. All of the team members need tosit this site and click on the tab registration and then find the rules and

egulations and print out a copy of them. It goes into detail on just how the scoring will be done, how the iroman course is literally run (each team member holds onto a rope while traveling together as a team) and heductions and extra points are earned. I remember the team rope from a few years back, there were courspotters along the run who reported which teams were holding on to the rope and if they werent there we

oints deducted from the team total.but the team never saw the spotters! Also listed on this site is a powoint presentation in using UTM to determine location, so my guess would be that everyone that needs aefresher course needs to view the PowerPoint. I just checked the Alabama wing web site and right nowere are ten teams registered for Iron Man. Like I said there are a few changes this year and in this

ompetition every point counts soGO TEAM! we will be there to cheer you on. On Thursday, October 20, we traveled to The Southern Museum of Flight to listen to NASA Astronaut,

erena M Aunon, speak on her background, training and life as an astronaut. There were several CAPquadrons represented in the audience, and Dr. Aunons talk was interesting to everyone there. After herresentation she stayed and answered questions from everybody.

Ok cadets, the months are winding down. As I write this, it is exactly 2 months until Christmas Day. Wee making Christmas party plans shortly, and the Pell City Christmas Parade will be the second Thursday

ecember. Watch and listen for announcements concerning these events in the near future. In last months trivia question, I asked about the chain of command and was surprised because no oneent me an answer. However, if you read the newsletter, at least one half of the questions answer was therinted, In the newsletter, was the cadet side chain of command.

This months trivia question is a little different. During the summer I visited the Talladega Motorsportsuseum and discovered an interesting fact about the US flag that flies above the North tunnel entrance to uperspeedway so now it becomes your trivia question for this month.

pt. Cynthia Bennett, Deputy Commander of Cadets

CADET OATH"I pledge to serve faithfully in the Civil Air Patrol Cadet Program and that I will attendmeetings regularly, participate actively in unit activities, obey my officers, wear my

uniform properly and advance my education and training rapidly to prepare myself to bof service to my community, state and nation."
