ldquoWorking with the Tuolumne Me-Wuk TribalGaming Agency we could immediately see how the property could benefit froman upgrade that would include a new videomanagement system as well as camerasservers and a new control center to be more efficient in covering the onsite casinohotel and gaming floor and eventuallyexpanding to the exterior sites suchas the parking lotsrdquo added Flowers

The primary goals for Black Oak CasinoResort were to switch to high definitioncameras enhance the virtual matrix capability provide a migration strategy andthe equipment to upgrade to a full internetprotocol (IP)-based system and transitionin a way that would be easy for the securitystaff to adopt The initial project was to bedone in phases over a period of 15 months

ldquoWe started with replacing the existing standard definition analog cameraswith over 400 new high definition (HD)fixed cameras along with HD 1080PPTZ dome camerasrdquo said Flowers

High definition cameras offer securitysurveillance employees and lawenforcement officers superior accessand use of video surveillance with more detail and wider coverage especiallyhelpful for video review and identificationpurposes Although HD images are largerand would naturally take more bandwidthand possibly clog up the IT infrastructurethere have been advancements in the handling of IP-based data streams Uniquedata routing protocols and advanced codecs like H264 are able to compressthe video and audio for transmission with significantly less bandwidth burden

In addition to the new cameras SSI also removed the existing legacy analog video matrix that provided live video and controlof the existing analog pantiltzoom (PTZ)cameras and replaced it with the latestPelco Endura 20 Video ManagementSystem (VMS) The change was made toallow full virtual matrix capabilities suitablefor live surveillance applications (one of

the propertyrsquos primary goals) as well asleverage the existing analog cameraswiring and control in a complete networkenvironment This upgrade provided a seamless migration to the new systemwhile allowing the security staff to maintainfull control on the existing legacy analog cameras more importantly it created an expandable platform that would allowthe addition of any number of new highdefinition IP cameras and operator stationswithout losing the responsive controland reliability of the virtual matrix

As part of the upgrade the Black OakCasino Resort also had to consider how the new IP-based HD video would impacttheir storage of the surveillance footageIn the phased migration new Pelco 36 TBnetwork storage managers were installed toreplace the legacy network video recorders (NVR) ldquoBy replacing the existing storage with a new NSM5200-36 network storagemanager we allowed existing MPEG4encoded video streams from analog

cameras in the system to be recordedon the same platform as the new highdefinition cameras that stream using themore efficient H264 protocol In additionthe inherent distributed architecture of the Endura IP VMS system allowed us toeliminate the potential of single points offailure so that the system could operatewithout interruption The NSM5200rsquosmulticast recording capability further streamlined the impact of HD cameras onthe IT networkrdquo and allow the recordingof multicast data streamsrdquo said Flowers

ldquoWe didnrsquot stop with justthe cameras storage andVMSrdquo Foster reflected ldquowe felt a true upgradewouldnrsquot be completewithout enhancing oursurveillance room toordquo

SSI chose Avayarsquos Fabric Connect technology andVirtual Services Platform Avaya Fabric Connectcombines the best of Ethernet and the best of IP-technology which enables the deployment of layer2 and layer 3 virtualized services with optimizedrouting and multicast The solution included a fullyredundant 10-gigabit mesh network connectingthe virtual services platforms This simple-to-deploy network provides full system capabilityand easy future expansion opportunities

ldquoIn order to properly deal with the tremendous amount of network traffic on this state-of-the-art

IP video system and help the property realize thefull potential of their video surveillance equipmentwe chose Avaya Fabric Connect technology builton IEEE and IETF SPB protocol This standards-based solution eliminates the complexity andlimitations of traditional network offerings andoffered us the flexibility we needed to complete thefull virtual matrix and accomplish the goals initiallypresented to us by the customerrdquo Flowers said
