The family of Roy Stokes is horri-fied the hall named in his honour could be sold or demolished.
The school board of trustees, groups that use the hall and local MP Poto Williams are working together in an effort to save it.
The hall is owned by New Brigh-ton Central School, which will close next year.
But it was built through commu-
nity fundrais-ing, and is regularly used for commu-nity meetings and events.
The hall was named after Roy Stokes, who managed the fundraising and design of the hall.
His son, Russell Stokes, said his
father would have been devastat-ed at the news.
“He would be turning over in his grave,
after the amount of work he and everyone else involved put into it.”
He said his father had meant the
hall to be used by the whole com-munity.
But it sits on New Brighton Cen-tral School land, and is owned and managed by the school.
The school will be closed next year, and the pupils will transfer to the merged Rawhiti School.
Ministry of Education spokes-man Jerome Sheppard said no de-cisions have been made about what will happen to the site or buildings after the school vacates.

Dog owners flooded the Heartland Services Building in Aranui last week for free and discounted treatment for their pets.
Owners of a range of dogs, from staffordshires to chihuahuas, queued up for the treatments which included free microchipping and advice, and discounted desexing and worm and flea treatment.
The clinic was organised by SPCA Canterbury, city council animal control and Housing New Zealand to combat the number of dog-related issues in the eastern suburbs.
It was not limited to Aranui residents, with some people bringing their dogs from Addington and Shirley.
SPCA Canterbury market-ing and communications manager Raina Roberts said there were people queuing around the corner with their dogs when the clinic started.
Julie Carr, of Aranui, brought her dog Monster in to get desexed and said the service was great.
She would have got the staffordshire bull terrier cross desexed elsewhere, but it would have been expen-sive.
“It would have cost the earth.”
She said Aranui had problems with stray dogs, and her cat had been killed recently by a group of them.
Fleur Murdoch brought her chi-chon in to receive all the treatments available and said it was a “fantastic service”.
She said without the clinic, a lot of the dogs there would not have received the treatments at all.
“A lot of these dogs wouldn’t have been done.”
She said she would definitely come back to the clinic, in spite of how long the line was.
SPCA Canterbury chief executive Barry Helem said he was pleased with the turnout with more than 100 dogs brought in.
He said another clinic was already scheduled for the last weekend of November, and would consider doing more following last week’s success.

• From page 1“Once the school vacates
we will decide if the property is still required for educa-tional purposes. If not, it will be declared surplus and transferred to Land Informa-tion New Zealand, which ad-ministers the Public Works Act disposal process. The future of the property will be determined during this process.”
He said that leasing the hall and swimming pool to community groups was an option
But board of trustees chairwoman Liarne Ta-maiparea said through the process the hall could be demolished or stand empty for years.
The board is trying to
organise a community group to lease the hall.
But time is limited, because the board will be disbanded when the school closes at the end of the year.
Ms Tamaiparea said the board was looking for concrete documentation from when the hall was built, about the amount of money contributed by the commu-nity, whether the land was gifted or bought and what was to happen to the hall if the school was closed.
Christchurch East MP Poto Williams said that the community needed to act while the land was still under the management of the school.
“It may be that we can have conversations with whoever
takes over the land, but that is not guaranteed. If we don’t start putting some informa-tion together to demonstrate the community interest, it could just be demolished, which would be a real shame for the community.”
She said the hall was used every day by community organisations.
“There are things I can do as the local MP, petitioning and writing letters to the minister. But to do that we need as much information as we can before we can put our case forward.”
To put forward a lease re-quest or supply information about the origins of the hall, contact the board of trustees through New Brighton Cen-tral School.

Trustees have been appointed to manage the Strategic Urban Reju-venation Force, which raised more than $25,000 from community fundraising earlier this year.
The trustees will replace founder and former director Tony Brooks, who resigned from the group earlier this year after his business, the Pierside Cafe and Bar, was put in liquidation.
The trustees are Ryan Connolly, Lesley Fulton, Kieren Gray, Nikki Griffin, Denise Mill, Jason Mill, Sarah Musson, Sorcha O’Malley, Dan Robson, Evan Smith and Maureen Taane.
Ms Fulton said the trustees chosen came from across the community.
“It is a good mix, because they all represent such a diverse range of people.”
The funds raised for SURF have been kept in a secure account, and will not be accessed until the group has been registered as a community trust.
That is expected to happen this month.
The group will then set up a voting system, to allow the whole community to vote on where the funds will go.
Ms Fulton said the focus of the group would be running events to bring people to the area, and “marketing” the area to the rest of the city.
The first SURF event, the New
Brighton Rockabilly Show & Shine, will kick off this weekend.
All proceeds from the events will go back into the SURF fund, to help pay for future plans and events.
Tickets to the Rockabilly Ball on Saturday, November 8 have sold
out, but Rockabilly events will be held throughout the day.
Those include a hot rod and classic car show in the New Brighton Beach car park, a vintage market as well as the regular Sea-side Market, and a retro makeover parlour.
The show and markets will run from 10am-3pm.
Car registration costs $10, and is available on the day. Entry is free.

Tell me how you got involved with SURF?
I was actually on holiday over in Scotland when the SURF cam-paign was launched. I got back in mid May and wanted to help, so we organised a fun day here. We raised about $3600 for SURF that afternoon. I then got behind a few other things for SURF, be-cause I had already done council stuff, so I knew how it worked.
I know you’ve been temporar-ily managing SURF since Tony Brooks stepped down – how difficult has it been to take the role on?
Not too bad at all. Because we realised early on that Tony had too much to do, we were trying to free him up a bit. So when he stepped back, we were already prepared.
So what sort of role do you think SURF will play in the future?
I think SURF’s main role will be in events and marketing, through things like the Rocka-billy market which will hopefully bring a lot of people to the area. And we want to develop our website, to showcase what is hap-pening here – to take Brighton beyond Brighton.
There is about $25,000 in the bank at the moment. That hasn’t been touched. Once the trustees are in place they will decide how to spend it, and a voting process will be set up to involve the com-munity in the decision.
Obviously we want to spend the money raised in the way the community wants it to be spent, but $25,000 doesn’t buy a lot these days.
What do you think is the big-gest strength of New Brighton?
It’s a really diverse community with very high and low socio-economic groups, but there’s no snobbery. It’s a very geographi-cally well-defined community, and people look out for each other here, especially since the earthquakes.
One thing which I think is interesting is that it’s very unusual to find someone from other parts of Christchurch who has moved
to this part of the city. So a lot of people don’t have family here, and that makes the community more important.
And there are a lot of creative and artistic people here which re-ally brightens the community.
A lot of people really want the community to improve, and since the earthquakes we’ve been given the opportunity now to do it. There were always lots of people with ideas here, but we are now working together.
What do you thing the biggest challenge is in the community?
Getting investment here. And to get other Christchurch people to back the area, and believe that it can become a highlight of the city – because where else in the city would you want to be on a nice day?
The challenge for us is to bring people to New Brighton. To give them a reason to come, and to keep raising the profile here.
So, tell me about your back-ground?
I’m originally from Scotland. I worked in France for several years, where my husband and I taught English for the British Council, but I always wanted to move to New Zealand. We did more than 10 years ago, and two children and a house later we still love it here. I now run a small business from home here.
What brought you to New Brighton specifically?
When we first moved to New
Zealand we rented a house in Mt Pleasant and we used to look down on the beach. When I dis-covered I was pregnant we started looking to buy, and this was the first place we looked.
Tell me about your family. My boys are aged 10 and 12.
They go to the local primary school, and they like surfing and sport – they’re pretty normal kids. My husband now works for Science Alive.
I’ve heard a rumour you speak five languages?
That’s not really true – only three fluently. I studied French and Spanish to be a translator, and I lived in Indonesia for a while and picked up the language there. I also speak a little bit of Arabic.
For you personally, what is it that keeps you motivated in your work with SURF?
I want to see New Brighton regarded as the amazing place it is. Personally, I get a lot of enjoyment out of working with the community, and it has been a real honour to be able to work on these projects with these people. It’s very exciting.
These are the sort of people who, if you want something done, they know how to get it sorted. If you need a poster done, it’s done. If you need help with something, boom, you have volunteers. They’re very passionate about the community and it has been quite inspiring to work with them.
When the New Brighton Strategic Urban Rejuvenation Force founder Tony Brooks stepped down from his position as director of the group last month, he passed the reigns to Lesley Fulton. She spoke to Gabrielle Stuart about her vision for the group.

The last Central New Brighton School reunion was “bittersweet” for former pupils, who travelled from as far as Germany and the United States to at-tend the events last week.
The 125-year reunion was the last at the school, which will close in December.
The pupils will be integrated into Rawhiti School, which will be cre-ated through the merger of Freeville, North New Brighton and Central New Brighton schools.
Organiser Margaret Kelso said about 270 people attended the events.
She said that most former pupils felt very sad the school was closing, but the atmosphere at the reunion stayed positive.
“There is a bit of sadness over it, but people were so pleased to get together and see old friends again that it did fade into the background a bit.”
She said that former pupils attended lunch and dinner functions, visited the New Brighton Heritage Museum to look at old photos, and joined a drum and fife march around Roy Stokes Community Hall, “just like in
the good old days”.Former pupils privately organise
several annual class reunions which are expected to continue, but the event was the last reunion organised by the school.
Mrs Kelso started at the school herself in 1948, and said her own children attended the school in the 70s and 80s.
“It was a wonderful community ac-tually, New Brighton. Everybody knew everybody else, and knew the families, which made it very strong. Everybody belonged to different things in the community, and it was always a very vibrant volunteering community.”
She said the school had contributed to many community projects, includ-ing the building of the pier, the mall and Roy Stokes Community Hall.
The merged Rawhiti School will open next year, and will initially be split between the Freeville School and Central New Brighton School sites.
Next year work will start on the North New Brighton School site, which will be completely rebuilt to house the new school.
The new school buildings are ex-pected to open in 2016.

On Tuesday, the Linwood College Year 7 & 8 volleyball team went to a volleyball tournament at the Lincoln Events Centre. We were one of seven schools who went to the event. It was loud and heaps of fun. We won four of our games, out of seven. We came seventh in the competition out of ten teams. We worked as a team and had a good time.

There are mice in Ms Mora’s science lab. Their names are the school houses. One of the mice was pregnant and then it had babies. There are three boys and four girls they all look the same. They have started to grow their fur but their eyes are still closed.

‘Tuning In’ was our new Challenge for this term ‘Grass to Glass.’ The students were involved in a number of rotations during the morning including a range of fun activities including making smoothies, milk and cow related computer games and taste testing of milk. The focus of this Challenge is the technological process that gets milk from the cow, to the shops and into our houses.

In technology we are making garden tools. Students are really interested in making them. How we made them? First we had to look at the model of our project and the paper model. Then we had to have a test about garden tools. Students are doing very well cutting metal and wood and also with measuring and bending things.

We are proud to present to the community our monthly review of events.
Pop in any Monday this Novem-ber and view our Golden Oldie movie of the week. A movie sched-ule is available from the museum. Come early for a cuppa and a chat, the films start at 1.30pm. Admis-sion costs a $2 donation.
During October, the museum made further progress on reno-vations and the arrangement of display cabinets. The 2015 New Brighton calendars were finished and are now available for purchase from the museum. We are in the process of cataloguing our book collection and intend to digitise some of them for preservation and ease of access.
At the end of Christchurch Heritage Week, former pupils of Central New Brighton School celebrated their 125th jubilee over a lunch at the museum, where they were treated to films of school events as far back as the 1950s, and shared their memories.
In November, our monthly display will present vintage tobac-conist items. Pop in and see if you recognise any of these accessories.
In December we are planning a display of antique Christmas
decorations. If you have any deco-rations from the 1960s or earlier, you can loan them to us for a display and we will take good care of them.
Did you know?Central New Brighton School
was originally called The Beach School. It opened in 1889 and began with just 39 students. It was the home of the popular drum and fife band which performed at assemblies, concerts and fairs, and between 1914 and the 1960s, marched through the New Brighton streets every Thursday. In 1961, the school opened its own pool. It was named the G. W. Bishop Memorial Pool, after the
school’s first principal. The Roy Stokes Hall was built in 1977 and named after the chairman of the school committee, having served for 25 years. It was mostly paid for by fundraising and community support, and is still used by com-munity groups – in fact, it was the location for the school reunion celebrations.
The museum is open from 10am to noon on Mondays, and every other day from 1-3pm. We take bookings for school groups and community functions.

The newly-appointed principal of the merged Rawhiti School, Elizabeth Weir, received a National Excellence in Leader-ship Award on Friday.
Ms Weir is one of five educators across the country to receive the award, from more than 600 nominations across early childhood, primary, intermediate and sec-ondary schools.
Ms Weir was the principal of Springston School when she was first nominated.
She said she will use the $2500 prize money towards studying fu-ture focused educa-tion at university, and attending the 2015 Council of Educa-tion Facility Planners International Confer-ence in Australia.
The award is sponsored by the Cogni-tion Education Trust.
Cognition Education Trust Executive Director, Anne Rodda, said Ms Weir was an outstanding educator.
“It is a privilege to celebrate Elizabeth Weir’s leadership of an energetic pre-school community that is collectively committed to enhancing every child’s po-tential”.
Leadership recipients go through a dif-ficult selection process to reach the na-tional awards. They are first nominated by a parent, board member, trustee, parent or community organisation, and then need to submit a comprehensive self-portrait and teaching background.
The regional recipients are then selected and give a five-minute oral presentation to the judging panel and submit a paper on a topic of their interest.
Funds given to Marian Col-lege following the earth-quakes have been put to use in a series of fun events ar-ranged by head girl, Tessa Donaldson.
The money was raised by their sister Josephite school, St Joseph’s Catholic College in East Gosford, New South Wales, to be used by Marian for their own purpose.
Tessa and other student leaders decided on a ‘mental
health’ week, full of activities for students in what is tradi-tionally a stressful time lead-ing up to external examina-tions.
“I talked to the school at assembly about this idea and everyone was really excited,” said Tessa.
Activities during the week included volleyball games, a photo booth and a giant bouncy slide.
“The girls loved the week,”
said Tessa.“There were smiles on
everyone’s faces and it really became all about the school coming together.”
The response from the activities was positive, with large queues forming at the various events.
The school was now look-ing at using the balance of funds to bring back the photo booth at the end of the school term.

When Aranui and Wainoni Pri-mary Schools’ combined year 7 and 8 netball team took part in the recent Koru Games, their side included three girls who had nev-er played the sport before.
Coach Sheree Rangihuna said she had many “proud moments” watching the team, which fin-ished 13th out of 22.
Kitted out with generously sponsored tracksuits, singlets, backpacks and gear bags, the girls saw participation as a privilege – and had an entire community watching with pride.
Rangihuna said that although she wanted the girls to have the taste of winning, it was about much more than that.
“It’s about giving the girls an opportunity of playing a team sport and building relationships outside of their school. It’s build-ing their individual skills and confidence, which, hopefully, will make joining other sports teams easier.
“It’s about lifting them up.”Rangihuna thought the tour-
nament was well organised, and hopes the event will continue in 2015, with the two schools plan-ning to enter a combined team once again.

Coastal Spirit held it’s annual un-der-19 boys’ and girls’ tournaments over Labour Weekend, with 26 teams competing.
Coastal’s Black teams won both tournaments, beating Nomads
United in the boys’ final, and Wel-lington United in the girls’ final.
Nomads United’s Liam Thomp-son was named the most valuable player of the final, and Dante Alley was named Coastal Black’s MVP.
Coastal club development offi-cer Maia Vink said the tournament provided an opportunity for club players to showcase their skills and continue their ongoing develop-ment.
She said this was evident throughout the weekend, as the standard of play was very high, with plenty of goals, saves, and in-dividual brilliance from players on all teams.

for different hair types
Finding a great hairdresser that has the skills to create the best style for your hair type can be difficult, but at My Hair & Beauty the qualified
stylists all have their own area of expertise. My Hair & Beauty has two separate salons
– one for hair styling and the other for a range of beauty and massage treatments with Naomi including manicures and pedicures with Vinylux polishes that last longer than normal nail polish but can be easily removed. The beauty salon has recently acquired the beautiful French skin care range La Biosthetique which can be used together to suit different types of skin. Other services include eyelash and eyebrow tinting and waxing.
In the hair salon, Korean hairdresser Sue and Chisa from Japan have years of experience in many countries and now offer great services to all nationalities, while Kathy looks after the “senior girls”, says owner Wendy Philipse, who bought the salon in February last year. The other two stylists in the My Hair & Beauty team are Emma from Ireland and Wendy who both share a passion for colour and the importance of haircare.
The salon caters to men, women and children, with incredibly reasonable prices using Redken, L’Oreal, Pureology and GHD products.
Summer is the perfect time for adding lighter tones with foils or a full colour, and My Hair & Beauty also caters for the busy wedding season and special styles for the races or Christmas parties.
My Hair & Beauty is located in (busy) Peerswick Mall in the heart of Church Corner, just across from Bush Inn. The hairdressing salon is open Monday to Saturday from 9am until 5pm and on Thursdays until 8pm, while beauty and massage therapist Naomi works Tuesdays to Saturdays and also has a late night on Thursday.
To book your beauty appointment, telephone Wendy and the team at My Hair & Beauty on 348 2782, or visit their website at www.my-hair-and-beauty.co.nz.

A new health & beauty store you will loveBrett Heaney and his team at
Christchurch’s newest Homestead Health and Beauty outlet at The Palms are thrilled with their
brand-new store and its extensive range of products.
The store, which is located near Countdown in The Palms, opened on September 20, and is the third Homestead Health and Beauty in the city – the other two are at The Hub Hornby and the Bush Inn Centre, Upper Riccarton.
Store manager Debbie Coulter has already gained considerable experience in the natural health and beauty industry, having managed three health shops in Wellington. She is assisted by Jenny Pierce, who previously worked at the original Homestead Health and Beauty in New Brighton. Jenny says, many former customers from that store have been very pleased to find the new store at The Palms.
With their qualifications and experience, Debbie and Jenny ensure that customers will benefit from their knowledge and expertise in all aspects of natural health and beauty, and they offer friendly, professional advice
on the most suitable products for people’s health and skin care needs.
“We have one of the largest ranges of natural health and beauty products in Christchurch, which includes our very popular everyday specials on some of our most popular items, for example, fish oil, glucosamine and protein powders in our sport zone section,” Debbie says.
New Homestead Health and Beauty, The Palms, Shirley, located next to Lotto shop, Countdown end, phone 385 0364.
Homestead Health and Beauty, The Hub Hornby, phone 349 5150.
Homestead Health and Beauty, The Bush Inn Centre, phone 348 7867.
“We look forward to building up a new customer base on this side of the city, and hope to develop strong relationships with everyone, from young families to mature adults, as the other Homestead Health and Beauty stores have done.”
Another benefit for customers is the long-established loyalty club, which rewards them with discounts and special offers. All three Homestead Health and Beauty stores offer an exceptional shopping experience, as has been demonstrated in recent customer satisfaction survey responses, which showed that 100 per cent of customers were “extremely happy” with the services offered.
“We welcome the opportunity to meet with you at The Palms store, and assist in helping you improve your health.”

Q A&HOW LONG SHOULD I KEEP HOME-MADE MAYONNAISE?Opinions differ, but I wouldaim to use it within a week, especially if madewithlemon juice rather thanvinegar. Always use thefreshest eggs and store inthe fridge (though not thecoldest part). As well asserving with salads, trymayo on your bread insteadof butter, as a dip withchips, and in hamburgers.Add crushed garlic tomake
aioli, or chopped capers, gherkins and parsley fortartare sauce to serve withfried fish. Mayonnaisedoesn’t freeze well.
WHY DO MOST BAKING RECIPESCALL FOR SUGAR, AND CAN ILEAVE IT OUT?Sugar helps with colour, texture, moistness andrising as well as flavour, and you can’t usually skip itwithout affecting thefinished product. However, you can often reduce theamounts of sugar called for,
adding artificial sweetenerto boost the flavour ifnecessary (note that onlysome brands of artificialsweetener are suitable forcooking purposes). Alsodon’t forget that crackers, cheese biscuits and sconesare often sugar-free,likewisemany breads androlls.

"The fresher theoil, the better thequality of yourdish.”
HOWmany differentoils do you havestored in yourpantry? Recentresearch from
international scan data companyAztec indicates households havean average of 2.9 types of oil. However, once a bottle is
opened and the oil is exposed tooxygen, it begins to losefreshness and flavour.Obviously, the fresher the oil,the better the quality of yourdish.
To this end, oil producer AlfaOne has introduced two extravirgin olive oils cold-pressedfrom olives within a few hours ofbeing picked. The two Umbrianolive varieties, leccino andfrantoio, are grown and pressed
by an Italian family in Australia, and the oil shipped to NewZealand stored in controlledconditions. Leccino extra virginolive oil is mild and smooth, great for dressings, sauces, pastas and low-heat frying.Frantoio is full-bodied and
fruity, suitable for stronger-flavoured dishes such asbarbecuemarinades orcasseroledmeats andwell-flavoured tomato delights. Useat low temperatures to preservethe flavours.
Brown rice oil is anothernewbie to themarket. Unlike thetwo olive oils, this one is suitablefor high temperature cooking.Brown rice grains are pressed
once, resulting in an oil high inantioxidants. Although excellentfor frying it can also be used inbaking and dressings.Peanut oil is highly regarded
as one of the best for cookingAsian dishes. Recently, Pics, thepeanut butter connoisseurs fromNelson, introduced a fine oilmade fromAustralian-grownpeanuts, which are cold pressed. It is high in unsaturated fats andhas a high smoke point, makingit ideal for grills, satays and stir-fries.

weight loss
An extract of a small pumpkin-like fruit called Garcinia cambogia from India
and Asia has shown itself to greatly assist weight management and overall health. In fact, many have found it to increase fat loss by two to three times greater than normal. Even The Dr. Oz Show on television noted it is the most effective and fastest working natural supplement to support weight loss.
Even without exercise and diet changes, many have found it beneficial although even better and quicker results are often obtained with extra exercise and an improved diet.
The extract of this amazing fruit is called hydroxycitric acid (HCA) or CitriMax. Research has shown HCA to help suppress the appetite, reduce cravings, feel fuller for longer, increase energy levels, help prevent fat from being made and stored in the body, increase lean muscle mass, increase serotonin levels
itn the brain that help control mood and sleep (great for emotional eaters), improve cholesterol levels that may help reduce the chances of strokes and cardiovascular disease, help prevent sugar spikes as well as other health benefits.
It is considered a very safe supplement (although check first if you are on medication) as it has been used for centuries as a flavouring agent and digestive aid.
To obtain reliable results, it is important to take a product that contains a standardised extract of 60 per cent HCA and also take the recommended amount as used in the clinical research. Some supplements also contain ChromeMate, a well-researched form of niacin-bound chromium to help improve the results even more.
For further advice, visit Marshall’s Health & Natural Therapy at 110 Seaview Road, New Brighton or call at phone 388 5757.
Belly fatExcessive fat accumulation around the belly not
only affects the way you look but increases the risk for diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer and stroke. This fat accumulation can
lead to early death. The good news is belly fat (abdominal fat) can be
reduced fairly easily and this may reduce the chance of serious disease.
Exercising regularly, drinking plenty of pure water,
increasing fibre intake, reducing or eliminating sugar, reducing carbohydrate intake, having smaller meals regularly and having more protein with each meal can make a difference.
The right supplements may also improve results considerably for many people.
Garcinia cambogia (Super CitriMax) provides hydroxycitric acid (HCA) that researchers have found to help stop fat being made and stored in the body. It is also effective at suppressing the appetite, reducing cravings and keeping you feeling fuller for longer. For effective results it should be taken 45 to 60 minutes before each meal.
SafSlim is a product that has been shown in one study to reduce belly fat up to six times faster over a 16-week period while at the same time increasing lean muscle. One tablespoon of the great tasting syrup should be taken twice a day before meals. It is recommended to be used for a minimum of 16 weeks.
Replacing one or two meals a day with a high protein meal replacement drink has been found to be a very effective way of reducing weight quickly for many people. It seems with regular protein intake the body starts to use up fat stores.
A daily fibre drink and a lower bowel tonic can help improve weight loss and is also a great way of improving your health. A cider vinegar drink can improve digestion, overall health and the metabolic rate and has been found also to be very beneficially for weight loss.

Camper Care NZ Motorhome & Caravan Show
Now in its eighth year, if you thought the South Island Camper Care NZ Motorhome & Caravan Show - taking place at the newly renamed
Horncastle Arena in Christchurch from November 7 to 9 – is all about motorhomes and caravans, it certainly is but there’s also so much more to see and do over show weekend.
There will be a host of highlights including recent Masterchef NZ 2014 contestants Nikki and Jordan Shearer cooking up a storm at the Inspiration in the Kitchen cooking classes. Top 10 Holiday Parks will be again be hosting the free-of-charge Top 10 Rally for those wanting to stay the weekend and catch up with their fellow motorhome adventurers.
Other show favourites will include The Bucket List Travel Zone, where you’ll be able to find out information on the perfect region to visit, camping grounds or events to enjoy while travelling, along with the Traillite Seminar Series, a number of free seminars showcasing top tips, from buying a motorhome to making the most of your retirement.
Introduced for the first time last year, the Geraldine Classic Caravan Club will also be back again, showcasing a range of pre-70s classic caravans in the ‘Walk Down Memory Lane’ area of the show.

MONEY
A recent survey conducted by Colmar Brunton for the Financial Markets Authority shows that many New Zea-landers do not understand investment risk (see www.fma.govt.nz).
The survey results paint a picture of investors who show a reasonably good understanding of more conservative investments, which offer security and a reliable return, but lack un-derstanding of higher-risk growth investments such as property and shares.
Just under two thirds of respondents preferred more conservative investments, while only around a third were prepared to see the value of their investments go up and down in order to get the best return. The implica-tion is that lack of familiar-ity with growth investments leads investors to avoid them and, in so doing, they are not giving themselves
the opportunity to learn about them.
Fear and ignorance are confining investors to lower-risk, lower-return invest-ments. There is a danger that those with a lack of under-standing will make poor decisions.
Investor education is one way to solve these problems but this is easier said than done. Whose role is it to find investors and engage with them to improve their understanding of invest-ments and risk? If investors are comfortable with more conservative investments what will motivate them to learn about alternative investment opportunities?
There is potential for KiwiSaver to be a good learning tool. KiwiSaver providers offer a range of investment options with dif-
fering risk profiles. Investing in KiwiSaver
should be treated like any other investment. It is important for the investor to determine the most appro-priate balance between risk and return, to understand the different investment options and to monitor the performance. As KiwiSaver balances grow, investors will increase their familiar-ity with investing in higher risk assets for the benefit of higher returns.

IT’STHEMIDDLE of Juneand 50 per cent of the yearis already almost behindus. Time flies when you are
having fun and, for many of us,that’s what this time of year isabout—with the ski seasonalmost here and others lookingfor winter escapes. It’s also a good time to look
ahead and plan for futuresuccess. Strategic planning isan essential component ofsuccessful business and I havetwo plans— one formyself andone for the business— both areintertwined.Formany of us, our
businesses are a reflection ofourselves, so it makes sensethat whenwe plan for ourbusiness(es), they reflect ourown goals and ambitions. So, what are you going to
achieve for the remainder ofthis year? What are yourtargets? Are you going to letlife happen or take astructured approach? It’s important that you set
goals for yourself and yourbusiness that energise, motivate, aremeasurable andattainable. However, you
shouldmake sure that you alsoset some stretch targets. My personal plan includes
revampingmy fitness and hasmany stretches . . . and stretchtargets! I have resolved toexercise at least three times aweek. I did start this columnwith the ‘‘time flies’’ statement, but it seems that in that fitnesstime, I can create an ability toslow time significantly or stopit entirely. So I am going to dust off the
previously unused stepmachine at home. And I will seta goal of ‘‘stepping’’ aparticular distance each day.Given that the garage isn’twarm, there is incentive to getmotivated. The stretch target is to
make this activity daily. OK,not much of a stretch, but rightnow I am about as fit as a BigMac is nutritious.
The key to stretch targets isthat they do just that; theystretch you to new levels ofperformance and, likemuscleswhen you exercise, you andyour business develop newstrengths as you achieve them.I know it won’t be easy—
particularly starting fromscratch— but I want to beexercising every day if I can. Sowhat do you dowhen thingsget toughwhen pursuing agoal? Instead of giving up, youget energised. And although itis a stretch, I believe it isattainable.Oncemy fitness returns, it
will be a goal achieved, and Iwill have developedmoreconfidence andwill feel bettertoo. It’s the same for goal setting
and strategic planning— setyour targets so you knowwhere you are going andinclude some stretch targets. The benefits to you and yourbusiness will be exponential.■ If you would like helpimplementing stretch targetsinto your strategic plan, giveZenith Solutions a call on 3479997.
Get goodadvice beforeinvesting overseas
It is not uncommon for NewZealanders to have overseasinvestments.Examplesmight be shares in
foreign companies, foreign unittrust investments, foreignsuperannuation schemes andforeign life insurance policies. There are some pitfalls in leaving
these investments overseas. If your overseas investments
have a value greater than $50,000,they could well be liable for tax inNew Zealand. This is called aForeign Investment Fund (FIF) tax. There are a number of options youcan choose from as to to calculate itand youwill need help from anaccountant or financial adviser.Certain overseas investments,
particularly Australian ones, areexempt from FIF tax.Under current NZ law, an
overseas adviser who providesinvestment advice to a NZ residentmust be an Authorised FinancialAdviser (AFA) as determined in theFinancial Advisers Act.Australian advisersmay in some
circumstances be exempt from this
requirement. Exemptions also applyto wholesale investors, for examplethose whose investment assets are$1million ormore. If, for example, you have a share
portfolio of around £200,000 in theUK onwhich personalisedinvestment advice is provided by abroker, the broker will be in breachof the Financial Advisers Act if he orshe is not registered as an AFA inNZ. Youwill not have the protectionof the code of conduct, disclosurerequire-ments anddisputeresolutionschemesthat aremandatoryfor AFAs.Finally,
having assets in currenciesother than the New Zealand dollarwill expose you to exchange raterisk.Obtaining advice from aNew

Super Sales AchieverWe are seeking a super sales person to join our sales team.
With the Christchurch market very strong in the building and home market, the opportunities for advertising sales are very exciting.
Ideally applicants will have previous experience in media sales (but this is not essential), and we encourage anyone who believes they have the ability and passion to build advertising relationships and build on the success of these brands to apply. We are seeking a dedicated organized person with a determination to succeed.
Applicants should be able to work to targets and budgets, be able to build long-term sustainable relationships with our customers, build new business, and be an “ideas’’ person working in a team environment.
Remuneration and employment conditions are excellent.
The successful applicant will be based at The Christchurch Star Company located in central Christchurch.
The Christchurch Star Company is a diversified media business. Our flagship The Star is one of the country’s largest newspapers by circulation and the country’s only free metropolitan newspaper. The company also publishes six community newspapers, several lifestyle and trading magazines and award winning feature publications. Our growing online presence includes digital editions of all our newspapers, websites and New Zealand’s largest media facebook community. The company also organises two of the city’s most iconic annual events, The Star City 2 Surf and The Star Home and Leisure Show.
If you are a confident person seeking a challenge and are prepared to work under pressure but enjoy the rewards, you will love this opportunity.
Applications will be processed on a rolling basis until filled, so if this is of interest please send in your CV promptly.

At the helm of the kitchen is Chef Paulo. Formerly of Michaels Restaurant, his cuisine reflects fine dining. Making the most of new season produce, Chef Paulo has created a fresh new menu that is modestly priced considering the high quality ingredients used and outstanding presentation of dishes.
Since opening in March, North New Brighton’s The Bower / Urban Corner Cafe Restaurant complex has received rave reviews for it’s innovative modern cuisine and industrial chic design. Constructed from shipping containers, a common response from new patrons is that the exterior does not do justice to the wealth of treasure within. The interior is stunning, and really must be seen to be appreciated.
Also launched is a separate $20 menu that is available daily in the adjoining Bower bar.
