World Of Sorrow By: Anonymous

We live in a world of sorrow

Where we pick up the shattered pieces of dreams But they rip our skin right through tomorrow

And suddenly they are all that they seem.

You see, we dream of finding love

Of finding someone to soothe our hearts Looked at by God high up above

He can’t fix our broken parts.

We can’t escape our crooked past

We’re afraid of the day ahead We’ve given up, we’re in last,

It is too hard to get out of bed.

We don’t know what we want, though we’re so obsessed

We don’t know what to call ourselves, but they do:

depressed.

Senior Year By Emma Barry

A big event in our lies

So much to do

So little time

College applications

Picking a major

Homework, work and clubs

Overwhelmed

Is an understatement

Even though we are under a lot of stress

This has been one of the best years

I confess -- Defeat

Reading Is Magic

By: Anonymous

Reading is magic you see

Read this very quietly

I am whispering

NOW READ THIS LOUDLY

I AM SCREAMING ON A RUN ON

SENTENCE AND YOU CAN’T STOP

BECAUSE THERE ARE NO

PERIODS IN THIS YET.

Sigh

There.

Now, Stop. Between. Words.

Because. There. Are. Periods.

It’s funny how, your mind

makes, little, pauses, because of,

the marks, I , make

It’s magic really.

Me vs. Me

by Maria Villagomez

I’m ugly

Ur not

I’m stupid

No ur not

I want to end it all

Stop it this isn’t a free for all

I will never please anyone

Yes I will and u do

You hate me what’s the point in life

Live it then understand along the way

Maybe I’m just as stupid as the rest

No ur better and u get the best

I hate myself

But I love me

I’m battling a war everyday

With myself

Who has caused it?

The people of this world

The ugliness it has become

The crime they have committed

But no they are not prosecuted

Or convicted

What outcome has it produced?

I care about others

Not myself

I try my best to satisfy others

I don’t want people to feel the same As I

did

And how I still feel

So I bring joy

Happiness

Fake smiles

Because I’m still fighting myself

I’m fighting this war

With the help of the man upstairs

Maybe I can with

This battle vs. myself…

No Difference

By Bianca Menez

We're people of color, there's nothing to be ashamed

of

It's just our ethnicity that contain within us

Black, light, white, or even all the colors that come

from within the rainbow

It’s not something to have hate for

We all come from different places that appreciate us

But shouldn't be shown

As a disgrace once out of it.

Sorry to say, but

Deal with your complexion

Whether you like it or not

It's what defines what you represent

Shouldn't be taken as a disadvantage

For the future that comes

The principles and expectations

That society has set for individuals

Expect for us to change what we came out to be

To be something that we have no intention to be

Though the idea may be overwhelming

It shouldn't convince us

To change our lovely color into another

Because you don't just only

Resemble as a color

Will Forever Last?

By: M.N.A.

Those words you

Utter quietly

A huff beneath

Your breath

“Forever” you hum

But life went on

I passed away

You kept me close

And kept that promise

“Forever” you whispered

As you passed away

And together we lay

Within this grave

Leaving

By Genesis Zepeda

Our laugh broke the silence and smiles

crept across our faces

Our happiness is incomparable to what

we found in other places

The trees and bees swarm in our hearts

Our words shoot out faster than rocket

darts

We all run away and don’t look back

And jump so high because it’s fear that

we lack

Don’t restrain me

Don’t touch me you can’t get near me

Because I’m way up here, I’m a honey

bee

I jump from cloud to cloud, and taste

the rain

I watch day and night swirl like a candy

cane

We’re so far up, I dip my fingers into

the solar system

Our homes and dreams refract into a

colorful prism

I can touch the sky and when I look

down I see what I left behind

It’s not much compared to what I’m

trying to find

Adventure, Experience, I’m going to

sunbathe in stars

Watch out everyone, I’m going to Mars

The law of gravity is backwards for

none

Except for me, I’m just about done

Love

It’s in everyone The nice

The rude The evil It’s everywhere you turn Everywhere you go Every place you see You may not see it But it’s there And always will be People have a hard time expressing it +So they suppress it People seem like they don’t have it

But they do It’s powerful It isn’t always obvious You have to search for it Love doesn’t define a person A person defines love No one can live without it You need it You can’t escape it It’s Love

By: Melanie Schlesser

Beaten by anger

Racked with fear

Every day is a struggle

Lost to the world

Not even sure

They know you live

Wishing for help

But knowing it will never come

Dreaming of life

But knowing it’s out of reach

Praying for safety

But knowing it’s impossible

Your journey of freedom

Has come to an end

Hopes and dreams

Wishes and prayers

None of it matters

When you’re a captive

A COLLECTION OF

POEMS Magdalena Nowobilski

Life and Bubble Gum

Life is a piece of bubble gum

A new piece of gum is fresh and juicy

With an amazing mouthwatering taste

Often life is good but sometimes it’s

horrendous

Bubble gum is fun to chew

You can blow huge or tiny bubbles

Life is about risk-taking

Enjoy and appreciate life

Chewing bubble gum refreshes the mouth

Clean mouths attract good people

After a while the taste goes sour and turns to

glue

This is when the problems and hardships in life

come along.

Bubble gum becomes mushy and starts sticking

to your teeth.

At this stage, cursing and fighting becomes a

big problem.

People need to learn that chewing gum in life

Will make people happy

Growing Up By Martin Bakr

OLCHS ART STUDENT

These are the days I wish I was a kid again

Days I would write with crayon instead of pen

The days I only knew the numbers 1-10

But I have to grow up

The days I laughed at anything even if it wasn’t

funny

The days I felt charged like the energizer bunny

The days where I didn’t care about the money

But I have to grow up

Now I’m growing up, and it’s nothing near fun

School for me is like hearing a bad pun

But I’m still nowhere near done

But I have to grow up

I’m patiently waiting for school to be over in the

spring

I’d rather just have the school bell ding

But the bell refused to ring

But I have to grow up

Now my life is a constant repetition

Each and every day I’m making different

decisions

I feel that my life is a video game mission but

Maybe that’s just growing up

I held the key of superbity

It was the height of the claim

I held the reign of calamity

But no one seemed to have any sanity

May this just be vanity?

Maybe we just need a family

And there will be compatibility

To show some humility

It’s when a person reflects on

The height or sum of a person’s life

When they’re in control

Or they have the decision to fail

Although when a person has too much pride

In their own accomplishments

And not enough dependence

Or strong bonds with those who wish to share

At which could be a possible Lead to fail

I Want to Have My Own Garden

By Genesis Zepeda

I want to have my own garden! I want happy tables Full of glorious food The exact opposite of a crappy mood I want to smile at stir fry chicken And give myself a finger lickin' I want my belly to grumble gregarious sounds Instead of grumbling mumbling emptiness My breath a savory kick back Sweet smells of oregano--No Not a kick in the stomach Sick smells of sour solitude--Oh I hate this place!

Give me a garden!!!!!!!! And watch me grow and grow Into a woman with thick skin and bones That have been known to show their faces And the distaste of healthy morrow Take me to my garden My favorite place I want to be awoken tomorrow And not gag at the smell of bacon But I must say I've done pretty well at faking

Bullied

By: Melanie Schlesser

Can you see her?

Cause she’s trying hard to fight the tears

We can’t pretend to know how she feels

She remembers tears streaming down her

face

It might seem crazy but it’s true

She feels lonely

She wants to be wanted

She craves to be popular

She needs a friend who could lift her up

Say you’ll never let her go

That’s all she needs

Not a footprint on her spirit

She needs a friend

She wants to be loved

She can’t stand being left out

Her heart breaks and you can hear it

She needs someone to show her the light

Even though she doesn’t need it

Everybody’s watching

She falls

Nothing is worth it

She has no friends, no loved ones

She’s lonely and insecure

She’s teased and hurt

She’s bullied

Waiting By: Brooke Rothman

You lay in bed waiting for that one person to come Staying up late watching the ceiling for hours Every sound you think of all that fun Listening to music and making cookies with flour All you see is red, white and green while in your car Driving around town, coming home to your bed The dark sky shimmers, with one shiny bright star But ending the party until tomorrow is a dread Time is ticking, the excitement will not stop As the clock hits almost 8, you run free Your hands ripping the paper and your mouth starts to drop You finally got what you wanted, and you’re happy as can be But after it ends, it’s another 365 days to go Until next year they say, with the next fall of snow

SUPERHERO By: Melanie Schlesser

This is a true superhero

It is true that

Heroes are cowards

It can’t be said that

Heroes exist in reality

It is true that

Superheroes are things for imagination

It is a lie that

Superheroes are military soldiers

It is correct that

Heroes need capes to be super

It is wrong to think that

Superheroes are everyday people

But superheroes are just the opposite

Superheroes are everyday people

It is wrong to think that

Heroes need capes to be super

It is correct that

Superheroes are military soldiers

It is a lie that

Superheroes are things for imagination

It is true that

Heroes exist in reality

It can’t be said that

Heroes are cowards

It is true that

This is a true superhero

The Mask By: Anonymous

This feeling, it hides in plain sight

Like the moon shrouded by the clouds in the darkest of night

It conceals one’s hope, and feeds on despair

Crippling compassion and concern constricting one’s care

She tells me she’s not herself

As if something else subsumed her spirit

I can see the loud expression in her face itself

I pleaded with her to let me hear it

I look her in the eyes

I tell her what I believe is true

“I am your friend, I will love you

I will care for you, and I will be there for you”

I wished for a sanguine smile

Shown in a satisfied, serene style

Yet through her expression I see grief

Revealing her feelings of disbelief

She’s tired of suffering a world of emotional pain

From peers to school, she gains pressure and strain

I tell her again, “I am your friend”

I ask her too “Do I look like I would want to hurt you?”

She gave me an apologetic look that was unreal

For in that moment, her gaze an arrow to my Achilles’ heel

I know that sticks and stones may break my bones

But her words, DID hurt me

To think that a person like her could descend so low

To don a disguise that would shroud her gentle glow

Unveiled through her fragile expression

She wears the mask of depression

Where I’m From By: Anonymous

Where I’m from

I’m from kids playing at the park till the street

lights turn on

I’m from everyone knowing about everybody

I’m from where getting chips and candy from

the corner store was a winning award

I’m from laughs throughout the day and sirens

throughout the night

Where I’m from

I’m from having to walk around at night feeling

frightened like an animal being surrounded by

lions

I’m from seeing one of your friends and a

couple hours later they’re no longer in this

world

I’m from having to be careful about what colors

you wear

I’m from seeing a cop car driving down the

block every half an hour

But where I’m from also has a side of it that is

The Garden of Eden

I’m from riding our bikes all around the

neighborhood till our legs fall off

Inside Gamer By: Merle Melendy

I am from warm days inside of my house

I’m from staying inside my room as a kid playing

games

I’m from the smell of freshly made food cooking

in the oven

I’m from going home to sitting down with TV

and food

I’m from “learn to care for yourself before

caring for others”

I’m from the amazing worlds of video games

The endless lands of skyrim

And oblivion

To the deadly terrains of Fallout 3 and New

Vegas

From cold weather in skyrim

To the amazing views from Sky scraping

mountains

From the smell of cheddar Doritos

Down to their crunch

As I bite down into them

From sticky ands and controls for my Xbox

I’m an inside gamer

Where I am from

I am from a city in which it never sleeps

That city is Chicago

For city that never grows tired or old

There are plenty of unique sounds and sights

These include the ambient noise of cars and

People talking on phones while walking

And the towering, breathtaking buildings

That never cease to amaze onlookers

The city is as fierce as a lion

It is known as the city of big shoulders

But serves as a welcome mat for everybody

While also encouraging others to travel abroad

Where I’m From

By: Corbin Kaiser

I am from bonding

From brownies and monopoly

I am from the baseball under the

porch

(hit for home runs and thrown for

double plays)

I am from the evergreens

The oaks

Whose large trunks I remember as

if they were my own arms

I'm from hoodies and blankets

From Kempin and Kaiser

I'm from the comedians

And English literature

From chill down and shut up

I'm from waves quietly rolling

towards the shore

With a Christmas angel

And Mary had a little lamb

I can say myself

I'm from the Patricia and Ronald

branch

From skirt steak and Hawaiian

Punch

From the silly

To the laundry machine

The Renaissance Fair

Under my bed was a tattered

blanket

Hanging dragons

A fairy picture

To love beneath my roof

I am from those moments-

Snapped before I budded-

Leaf-fall from the family tree

I’m from laughter from parents

I Am From By: Faith Reedy

I am from scraped knees

From Italian pasta and fresh cannoli’s

I am from the boot under the kitchen

Dipingere quadrie di aitare il mio giardino

nonno

(Painting pictures and helping my grandpa

garden)

The playful dogs. Whose family is loud

I remember as if they were my own

I’m from meatballs and scooters

From Lisa and a father who will never return

I am from a broken family

And a restitched family from one and another!

I’m from “Our father who art in heaven halo be

thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on

earth as it is in heaven.”

With a statue of the Virgin Mary

And “Hush little baby don’t you cry mamas

gonna buy you a mockingbird

And if that mockingbird don’t sing mamas

gonna buy you a diamond ring…”

I can say myself

I’m from Dolores and Jimmy’s Branch

Tacos and coca cola

From board games and jokes

To the kitchen utensils and the Christmas

gatherings

Under my bed lay my soft blanket I couldn’t

sleep without

Riding scooters with my best friend Bella

And never knowing why I was so hyper

Down goes a pill every day from when I was ten.

To swimming in the pool beneath my grandpa

Who had ALS taking care of his garden

I am from those moments snapped

Before I budded leaf

Fall from the family tree.

Old Chicago

By: Sean Baldwin

I remember Chicago way back in 1937

It was like an area of heaven

Way before the increasing skyscrapers

Way before the expanding rolls of newspapers

The city was as small as Jamestown in the

1600’s

Except that Jamestown was not as big as the

city now in the 1900’s

Chicago was popular for its population

But it was not known for its years-ago

depression starvation

The people were dogs looking for something to

eat

And it was not like they were getting a treat

Now, the city can’t cease to ever entertain

people

With its super-silly buildings next to a pole

But in 1975, the skyscrapers were expanding

They were making a big rocket landing

But today, the city is busy making a big living

Even though it was still the same

World Full of Lies By Maria Villagomez

Life as it goes is nothing but fake

Really if you smile and think I'm lying there's

obviously a mistake

The world I live in is being taken over

People are losing the will to move back or to

move forward

I was the pawn and he was the king

He didn't let me move another square

because it was his turn

He told me if I moved it was a foul

But he was in control and I threw in the

towel

This world is nothing but lies

Girls at night do nothing but cry

Boys are becoming this things where no

one can live without

This world is becoming a place where no

one can be themselves

It's like going to school late and the bell has

already rung

You know if you walk in you will walk out

with a detention slip

This world is tip wasted all around

The cord on the phone isn't working

It's not picking up calls

The day people start to realize this world is

nothing but a fake

Then by then it will be too late

Girls are dying and boys are lying

What more can we do,

Except sit back and let it all happen and sit

it all through

This world has taking over our minds

Criminals are getting what they want

People can't even get a job anymore

Another girl or boy is dead on the floor

This something usual that happens in the

world

Don't act like this isn't something new

It's not a fresh product

Or a fresh pair of shoes

But a doll that's been on the floor for

months, years, decades

And everyone knows what it is

But never will it be picked up ever again

The day a child is born

But it knows it will die

The day your mother told you a lie

It will be too late

That boy and girl are together because of

fate

That girl was lied to and still with him

He lies everyday and he tells her "I love

you" but doesn't mean it

An innocent is thrown into jail

While the murderer got probation and bail

This world is nothing but a fail

That girl has no friends

While the others make promises that will

last forever, maybe to the end

But she or he doesn't realize that they lied

Forever isn't always promised

And now they are broken-hearted

It's just me and my broken

Gee, I wonder who said that

But they know all they want is attention from

the very start

And boom

Life has ended

With a slit on the wrist

Or the pills that have been swallowed

It's too late to go back

Your funeral is when they care

And they stand up and fake cry and wish

you were back and there

They lied

Your standing at your funeral lost in hope

But guess what you see when your there

Your mom was right and you weren't

But now you realized

The world at the beginning

The day you breathe in the oxygen at birth

Was the day you didn't know

The world is full of lies

My generation is tomorrow

And it breaks my heart

A heartbroken to see no one wanting to

Really try for anything

My generation is home to atheists

Who are sick of religion

Being force-fed to them

And so they tell

Everyone who prays that they are wrong

My generation is made of powerful and

Parochial political points of view

Probably preconceived or premeditated by

The parents of the people prattling

My generation believes in intelligence,

Good morals, respect and faith

But only follows these beliefs

When we feel it to be necessary

My generation is just keepin’ it real

Being original and everyone is unique

Unique, original and real copies

Of the people next to them

My generation is the kind of generation

That will fight without our every last breath

Bloody, painfully, horribly

In hopes of obtaining world peace

My generation will cry and ramble for days

Over a hunter killing an animal

Somewhere in Africa

But will not even think twice about the

Near 750,000 abortions performed yearly

My generation believes

In the true value of art

Because art doesn’t require effort or talent

As long as it is still

The expression of oneself

My generation is students

Who don’t know how to listen

Trying to call out teachers

Who don’t know how to teach

My generation is painful to look at

It burns my eyes to watch

Mental illness is the latest rage

Tragedy is hilarity

Weakness and giving up is strength

Stupidity and ignorance are welcomed

Intelligence is shunned

Scars are medallions

Drugs are hobbies and laziness is praised

My generation is pathetic

But my generation will

Take steps into the future

That none of the other generations

Would have been able to

My generation will pave the way

To put colonies on Mars

Explore deep space

My generation may be one of the first

To never have to worry

About cancer ever again

My generation could solve

The corruption in our government

End end the class war

My generation will do things and innovate

In ways I can’t even imagine now

No matter how hard

I try to stretch my mind

My generation will stop humans from

Irreversibly damaging our planet

We are misguided children

We are like the Alaskan salmon leaping out

Feminism

As Beyonce says a feminist is a person who believes in

The social, political and economic equality for the sexes

Google says a person who supports feminism

Yeah you say a word has many meanings to it

But it all has the same idea

Since forever

Women have been getting beat down

And thrown around

No matter what race or culture

Or style or color

They say we aren’t good enough to do what men do

To do what?

Build Houses-- we can do that

Mow the lawn--we can do that

We can do everything a man can do

But yet we don’t get the same pay

Instead they leave us there to stray

But she still has that same sensational smile

They say we have too many flaws

Honey, we’re flawless

A gap between her teeth-- Flawless

Nappy hair--Flawless

Obese? Sweetie you’re flawless

You can be tall as a giraffe

Or short as a bird

But you are a queen

Oh her brain is a size of a pea

But statistics say we’re smarter

“She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue”

As it says in the Bible

We’re as wise as the goddess Athena

They can wash theSE negative comments with soap

Because I’m here to tell you

Society By: Unknown

They tell us to act,

Think, speak and live

You want to wear the sweater

Your grandma knitted you

But don’t because

You know what they will say

Bullies are like their soldiers

If you haven’t kissed someone

Somehow you’re a prude

What’s so wrong with a relationship

Like Eleanor and Parks

Just because

Her hair looks like a fireball

Doesn’t mean she’s different

They tell you how to dress

Skirts, shorts, shirts, somehow seem

To determine your popularity

You want to scream across the world

But there is no one there to hear you

The society rules you

Until you break through

What is Life ? – A Monologue by Sean Baldwin

What is life?

What is life without family, without friends

What is life without knowing who you are

What is life without knowledge

What is Life without colleges

Or schools here on this planet to increase your

scholarship

What is life without technology

Or computers that make lives easier

What is life without internet, hones, tablets, tv,

Or movies music and cameras

Beside you to entertain or amaze you

What is life without online and arcade games

What is Life without the presence

Of video game consoles, Wii, Playstation or XBOX

What is life without sports

Like football, baseball, hockey and soccer

What is life without

The presence of Life around you

What is life without our indestructible creator

Who created us

What is life without Heaven up above

Or Hell down below

What is life, without world problems

Or Histories, world wars, crimes, democracy

Leadership and intelligence

From Albert Einstein, Isaac Newton,

George Washington and Thomas Jefferson

What is life without senses, personalities, and traits

What is life without money

Or taxes, fees, refunds and trading

What is life without death and llnesses

Or pain, injuries and sadness

What is Life without hospitals and doctors

Medication and prescribed treatments

What is life without food from McDonalds

KFC, Burger King and restaurants you love to go to

What is life without liquids like water

Pepsi, Coca-Cola, mountain dew, and other drinks

What is life without any of these things

That not only involve us but all living things around

Not just us, but the world

Only time will tell

It depends on the actions

Of not just myself, but of all people

We all make actions that may be good or bad

This world is not a place for everyone

Because people, like us here

Are sinful and tend to make mistakes

I am one of these people

The mistakes I have made

Those that I most remember are those

Where I have wondered curiously around areas

Watched trains, whilst close to the train tracks

Even seeing things when I shouldn’t have

I wish that I would go back in time

To take my mistakes and fix them,

So they will never bother me again

The reason I am asking questions

And confessing all my dark sides

Is because we are living beings

Many people regret the things that they have done

I myself included

It is the many events in this world

In history that has happened

And will happen again

That have led us here.

It is evil that possess us all

It is God who is in charge of all our fates

It is Jesus who had freed us from all sin and gave his

life up for us

It is us who improves our world or so we think

It is us who creates world problems, road traffic and

even criminal acts

I am wanting to spread the word to all of you

Because I want this world to be an anti-callous place

Without the creation of this world

Other living creatures we wouldn’t be here.

I want to successfully turn the evil acts of humans

Turn them to the opposite

I want to spread the one word that lead us here

And wants us to continue on without our routines

That just may lead us to currently unknown futures

Life-- take some time to think to yourselves

About this one question I am about to

Ask you once again…What is life?

Secret

Never Concerned to Leave Can you eat?

Can you breath? Is there something you need?

He is standing over you Thinking is there a way he's able to be the one you needSo every night

he’ll be the last one you see Before you go to sleep

Provide anything you need because he’s willing to do anything That you want or proceed

Doesn't care whether you look like crap or a pile of cash He has already past your face, your personality is what he’ll never leave

Is what will always last.

Forever I have a brother that passed

I never had the chance

To see him last

But he gave me another

That I could actually hold

And to call my own

In the realistic world.

But don't misunderstand

He's in my deepest memory

I won't ever leave from his side

Because I know that I love him

But he didn't die

He's here with me

By each and every side

There's not a day that goes by

That I let him slide

From saying goodnight

I love you –hope you sleep tight.

BBQ

BY: Vaughn Smith

The piquant taste

Of the euphoric sauce

Dancing about my delicate taste buds

Like a gymnast soaring through the air

The fried onion rings march across the

Succulent beef like soldiers

The cheese is the safety net that holds it all in

But the bun is love

The bun is your home sweet home

The fragility of the bun serves as a doormat

And the moistness is like unlocking the door

And gliding right through the threshold

Now you squat and balloon comfortably

As your meal is done

Ode to Chicken By: Nathan Owen

Grilled to perfection

Breaded and made crunchy

Served with sweet honey mustard

Or tangy barbecue

The smell of cooked meat

Filling the area around

Small nuggets to huge breasts

Drum sticks and tenders

Chicken is the taste of everything

Helping defeat hunger

Unknown to Him By: Sydney Janik

When I hear his voice I lose my breath

I get this weird pain like a shot in my chest

His smile could make the world light up

And when I see it, my throat catches a lump

I can say I love because I truly do

It’s something most people can’t get used to

Yes, I love him. Yes, it’s true

My heart feels like a roller coaster on a loop-de-loop

Yet the person these feelings are for

Doesn’t know me and that can’t be ignored

To him, I’m a tiny star in the universe

A single note in an entire verse

Oh, eyes of green

Your distance is a constant scene

He’s like a ray of sun struggling through the clouds

To him, I’m just another fan screaming in the crowd

White Crayon

Look at me in my special box

Awaiting to be used on special paper stocks

I’m crisp and clean

I’m perfect, so it seems

But, I have yet to feel the warmth of your hands

In the corner is where I stand

I see the colors always used

The vivid violets and the royal blues

I’m still just incredibly white

Not colorful, nor bright

But, if I happened to change my hue,

Could I be liked by you?

Please, Gods, give me the strength, to tell this tale, to say this story, and to muse this myth. God of

English, Frangella, help me with this story to be told.

A far away land, off the coast of what is today Italy, there was a small kingdom, ruled by a fair King and

queen. The king and queen were kind, but also held their ground. They were nice, and full of authority. Their son,

the same way. They were pictured the perfect ruler and loved by all. Well....almost all.

Late one night, a terrible thief, broke into the castle, and stole one of the King and queens most loved and

valuable possessions. Before their majesties even woke up, the thief was gone with the trash, and back out the

way he came, gone in the dark of the night. When they woke up, they went on a frantic search to find their jewel,

but they found nothing. Came up empty- handed, and desperate. They needed this back, for it was all they loved.

They knew that someone must have stolen it, and knew that if they make a scene or tell the whole kingdom about

this, that the awful thief would move and hide, decreasing their chances of finding him. So, secretly one night, they

called upon a trusted warrior, one most wouldn't expect. And told the warrior of what was happening. They hid

themselves, deep behind the castle, and sent to work. The king and queen knew exactly who had taken their

treasure, and where to find him, for he used to live among the castle, but was banished. They had called upon the

trusted, loyal, loving and honest warrior. "Now Nevaeh, there will be temptations, and other treasures and riches

that lie ahead, but I ask of you that you only get what has been stolen from me" the queen said, linking her hands

in front of her and standing in authority. The warrior bowed her head. "Of course your majesty, but if I am to

return with your...stolen item, shouldn't I know what it is, so I can?" The king and queen looked to each other,

nodded, and turned back to Nevaeh. The king leaned down close to the Warriors ear, and whispers the answer.

Her eyes widens and her mouth slightly dropped. "Can we trust you with this mission?" The queen asked "Of

course, your majesty. I shall bring back your treasure, and return it safely to you, even if it means I get hurt. You

may trust me." "Good" the king nodded. "You shall be gone by morning. Grab some men, and take them on this

journey with you. Bring food and water, for it may be a long journey. Sail to the setting sun, and find the island of

Philoctetes. He shall aid you and point you in the right direction from there. Go now, rest for your trip" the warrior

nodded, bowing to the king and queen, and setting off.

By late dawn, she had already gotten up, gathered a crew of forty men, and was gathering all she needed

to sail to Phil. "Master" one of her older crew members approached her as they were getting the last that they

needed onto the ship to sail off. "What is the treasure that their majesty wants us to get?" "Yeah we wanna

know!" Another of them shouted. The rumble of agreements and roar of the ocean water blended together.

Page 35: PEGASUS LITERARY MAGAZINE - OLCHS.org2016 Pegasus Literary Magazine Oak Lawn Community High School Oak Lawn, IL Spartan Creative Writing Club Sponsor Ms. Colleen Conway Spartan Creative

"Men!" She shouted, catching all of their attention "you know the king and queen entrusted me with

knowing, and that it is secret. I will not go against their words, or may the gods help me". She looked at her whole

crew. "Do I make myself clear?" "Yes master" they all grumbled, taking their positions on the boat to sail faster to

the island. The first days on the boat, were fine. Nothing major had happened, but as soon as the third week

passed, it was like a fresh hell on the boat. Men were fighting over nothing, trying to hide the food. Nevaeh

eventually had enough. So she stood on top of the highest point in the front of the ship. "Men!" She shouted,

“Stop acting like savage animals! For what does it gain you?""You don't understand" someone in the back

grumbled "because you're a girl."

Her eyes searched the crew for who had spoken it, and when she descended from her spot, the rest of the

crew made way, knowing not to cross their master. The man who had spoken out, quivered with slight fear, when

she finally reached him. "I wouldn't know, because I'm a girl?" She asked him, in a deathly calm voice. "Uh-uh..."

He stutters. "Well, maybe you don't know, because you're a man, no.....a boy" she glares harshly at him for the

last part. He nodded fast, too afraid to speak. "You are not to speak to me in such a manner, do I make myself

clear?" She said, louder than before. He nodded fast again, she raised her eyebrows. "I said," she emphasized "do I

make myself clear?" "Yes master, of course master" he said. "Good." She nodded to him, and he scurried off.

"Man your ores" she called to the lot "I see land ahead." No sooner had she said those words, the shadow of land

came into being for the men, and they rowed faster to the island. They docked the ship on the island, lowering the

anchor and hopping off to spread their legs out on the sand. "We haven't time to doddle men, unless you wish to

be eaten by the monsters" Nevaeh said, as she herself hopped off the boat and started walking.

There was a small house, no bigger than her own house back home, which was lit with candles, and

humming with life. She stepped closer, her men in tow, a voice called out "Who goes there?" The men shook with

startling, but she stayed put, "Tis I, Nevaeh Rose. I have come seeking Philoctetes. Greek hero that participated at

Troy." "Ha well why didn't thee just say" the small door on the tiny house creaked open, and a petite man walked

out. Startling as it seemed, he was not fully a man. His lower half was that of a goat, his upper half, a man with

horns atop his head. "I, am Philoctetes but you may call me Phil." "Hello Phil, I presume you know why we are

here?" "Yes. Of course, you must be Nevaeh. The king and queen informed me of your arrival. I have directions,

you seek. “Come, come" he waved her to his small house. The men stayed outside near the ship, waiting for their

master to return. The men were talking with each other, bumping around, when they heard a voice. One man

heard it first, then another, another, and eventually almost all of them. It was a beautiful voice. A voice like a

goddess.

"Forth which is that beautiful voice coming from?" spoke Eruroites, the

tallest and leader of the men. He spotted them. Perched upon the rocks of the beach in which they landed, were

beautiful women, enough for half the men. The men all look toward each other, and without a single word spoken,

they dashed to the rocks. Now, inside the house, Phil had given Nevaeh a map and had just finished telling her how

to sail to the island. "Make sure your men haven't met the sirens" Phil laughed. Her eyes got wide "sirens?”

Foolish men I have. They are probably being taken away as we speak!" Nevaeh rushed out of the house, moving to

draw her sword at her side. By the time she finally got to the rocks, half of the crew was already taken, leaving her

only about 20 men. She groaned in frustration as she ordered the rest of her men to board the ship and cover their

ears. "Eruroites!" She barked out. He leaned over the side of the boat, supporting a bleeding wound on his arm.

"Yes master?" "What happened?" She was standing akimbo now. "Well master...we heard the beautiful voices of

those women down by the rocks. So the men, rushed over to see the beautiful women...and the women were so

decked with jewels, that they lured the men. And-and when they finally got them master, they killed them! I

couldn't save them all master, it wasn't my fault!" "Eruroites!" She spoke. He stopped dead. "Calm down and tend

to those men who are alive, and don't get off the ship. Do not be tempted by the sirens again" she spoke to all of

them.

"Terribly sorry Phil, we must head off before my men slit their own throats" she bowed slightly to the

small man. He smiled brightly. "Not a trouble at all fair Nevaeh. Be off now, and regain the treasure for their

majesty. " He waved to her. She bowed again once more, and walked back to the ship, climbed up the rope

holding the archer, and they finally sallied off. When they were finally sailing off, she pulled out the map that Phil

had given her. She instructed her men where to stand and what to man, and they were finally officially off.

Days and nights went by in a blur. Dawn and dusk toyed with them, messing with their sleep and annoying

them. Finally, tired, aggravating, and fed up, she and the rest of her crew finally made it to the island of the

sorcerer. Her men docked the ship, and Navaeh hopped down off the side, landing on the sand and rocks, piles of

rocks lined the edge of the beach. "How will we get through master?" One of her crew shouted from the boat.

"Don't underestimate me" said Nevaeh, as she walked right for the ragged rocks. "Master wait!" Some of her crew

shouted, but she was already walking into the rocks. The crew watched in horror, as their master's body passed

through the rocks, more like mountains, as if she was a ghost. She passed through the trap, with no problem, for

she knew that this was just a deception of the sorcerer. She walked along the narrow paths, until the end came,

and a door appeared in her vision.

Page 37: PEGASUS LITERARY MAGAZINE - OLCHS.org2016 Pegasus Literary Magazine Oak Lawn Community High School Oak Lawn, IL Spartan Creative Writing Club Sponsor Ms. Colleen Conway Spartan Creative

She heard a small whistle behind her, and turned around to see a handsome man, leaning against the rock

behind her. "Caerus" she said, more a statement than anything. "The one and only" he smiled. "What are you

doing here?" "I'm the god of luck aren't I? I came here, to wish you luck" he winked. "Thank you, Caerus. I may be

needing it" she nodded her head in a sign of respect to the gods. "My pleasure. Oh, you may also need this-" he

held a key out in his hands, toward her "A key? Thank you. How did you know I would need one?" "Lucky guess"

he smiled. "Good luck Navaeh. The treasure is waiting for you!" He called and waved as he disappeared through

the rocks, and out of sight. She waved goodbye, and turned back to the door ahead. She was about to try the key

in the door, but saw it was already open. Confused, she put the key into her pocket, wondering what Caerus thinks

she would need it for now. She checked to make sure she had her weapons, before she slowly pushed open the

door. She walked in, looking at everything around her, until she saw something of a bed, and heard snores of a

man. She walked closer to confirm, but not close enough for them to see her, and it was.

Drawing her sword from her side, she slowly advances upon the sleeping figure of the

sorcerer. The slight snores and little moment, told her he should be sleeping. She crept as quietly as the air in the

room. She saw the treasure, hidden behind bars in the corner of the room, and knew how to get it out. Here was a

lock on the front of the bars and it needed a key. Her sword in hand, ready to slice anything she had to, she tip

toed over to the sleeping form. "Stupid stupid human girl" a sickening voice taunted and broke through the silence

"stupid girls are easy to fool" a cackle, shredded into her ears, and she stood her ground, unmoving, and not

speaking. "I know what you've come for, little girl" the sleeping form began to rise, not to sit or to stand, but to

float, floating a few feet above the bed it had slept in. Its rags were torn, its hair long, and it looked filthy. The

sorcerer floated over the bed, and grinned evilly at her. "Little girl. Why don't you play nice, and run back home to

your mummy and daddy?" He mocked her. She locked her jaw, as her eyes flared with hatred. "I don't think that

will be necessary" she spat through her teeth. "Why don't you come down here and fight like a man?" She knew

she hit a soft spot for the wicked man, as his eyes also showed hate, and he glared at her. "Very well" he growled

"you shall be the one to lose" he floated down, standing on his own feet, many spaces away from her. He drew out

his wand, as she pulled her sword higher into the air. They circled each other, like two animals waiting to fight.

Hissing and growling. Gnawing and biting. They circled around one another, sniffing the air in front of them,

throwing daggers to the other. They kept circling each other, like the other, was the prey. Circling and circling, until

they both came to a dead stop, a hard stare off, waiting, for the other to make a move. The male tried to strike

first, launching a war cry like that of a wolf, and launching for the girl, a spell on the tip of his tongue. She was

quick to move however, dodging the spell cast right at her chest, and managing to spin back around and slice open

part of his arm. He cried out in surprise, but then he smirked wickedly at her. "Haven't you learned?" The vile

creature sneered to her, "sorcerers aren't human" he laughed evilly, as the wound in his arm started to heal by

itself, having once been dripping crism liquid all over the floor.

She was to distracted by the somehow healing wound to see the man pull up his wand again to strike her.

She did hear, however, the nasty spell being spit out of his mouth, and she raised her sword, deflecting the spell

from her, and it bounced off a wall. He rushed to her, as if to tackle her to the ground, but she was too fast.

Dodging once again, but this time, managing to yank some of his ratty long hair in her hand, bringing him down to

the ground. She forces his whole body down on the ground, and keeps him there. "Haven't you learned" she

whispers near his ear, soft but still menacing "not all girls play nice." Her motion was so fast that if you blinked,

you would miss it. One second his head was on his shoulders, the next, on the floor. She had slit his neck, and

looped it completely off his head, as the red blood spilled over everywhere. His eyes were still frozen in horror, and

his mouth still wide. The light in his eyes faded, as his body followed his head and fell to the floor as well.

Page 38: PEGASUS LITERARY MAGAZINE - OLCHS.org2016 Pegasus Literary Magazine Oak Lawn Community High School Oak Lawn, IL Spartan Creative Writing Club Sponsor Ms. Colleen Conway Spartan Creative

She froze for a second, watching the glint of the sword in front of her. She slid it back into its holster at

her side, mentally telling herself to clean it later. She walked over to the metal bars from before, and pulled the

previous key from her pocket, putting it in the hole and smiling when it unlocked and opened. She found the

treasure immediately, and she picked it up and threw it over her shoulder, walking out slowly so as not to harm

the treasure. Her men were waiting worriedly on the edge of the beach. They were worried their master had been

killed or was hurt. Eruroites started walking swords the rocks that Nevaeh had went, just as she came into view

"Master!" He cried. "We thought you were hurt.""I'm fine" she said assuring "just get everyone on the boat. I have

the treasure, and we must go home now." Eruroites got all the men to reload on the boat, and they all got into

position. Whooping and cheering happily, they sailed home, even when the trip went on for almost a month.

When they finally reached their home, the men jumped off the boat happily, and went straight home,

leaving Nevaeh with the boat and the treasure. She called the king and queen out of the castle, figuring they would

want to see this for themselves. She called for the king and queen from the steps of the palace, where she and the

treasure were, and they looked over the side to see her there. "Your majesty's! I have returned with your treasure

At Last!"

They rushed down to the steps happily, running over to their treasure immediately before thanking her

profoundly. "Thank you, fair Nevaeh. You have brought back the one thing we loved the most" the queen dabbed

her watery eyes. "Of course your highness. It was my pleasure to bring you back your son" she bowed her head.

Their son, the prince, finally stood up and addressed Nevaeh, having been so weak during the trip here that he

slept the whole time. "Thank you, lovely Neveah for saving me. How can I ever repay you?" He said respectfully to

her. "There is no price for what I have done, prince, I am just happy you are safe, and home at last." "Well then I

insist you join mother, father and I for dinner tonight. Prince's orders" he flashes her a bright smile. "Of course,

your highness" she bowed to him "Please, lovely Nevaeh, call me Diavon. (Pronounced deeavahun)""Of course,

Diavon."

"Mother, have you seen my wife?" "No Diavon. Have you checked the balcony?" "No I haven't. Thank you

mother." "Goodbye son." Diavon rushed up the stairs to the balcony at the top of the castle, pushing open the

doors, and smiling as he saw his wife "My lovely, what are you doing up here?" He asked her "Nothing, my prince.

Just thinking about how lucky I am to be with a true prince, not born into royalty but grown from heart" she smiled

at him when he came to her. "I beg to differ, for it is I who is lucky" she beamed up at him and he grinned down to

her. "I will always love you, Diavon" she smiled, and he caressed her cheek "And I will always love you, Nevaeh"

and they lived happily ever after...because, why not?

"Al Que Reconcilia"

By Sergio Serna

Tú, varón famoso, quien eres de un semblante que evoca a los corazones altivos;

Quién eres de una figura que hace reverencia a tu pueblo, que es tan humilde;

Tú, quien quebranto las cadenas de un enemigo extraño que ultrajo el honor de la patria con tan solo su pisar;

Quien llamó y unió a los hijos perdidos y diversos que deambulaban sin su madre, sin su patria;

Donde tú estuvieres, no tuviste par pues tú inspiraste a millones con tu ejemplo;

Nos enseñaste y compartiste con nosotros tu paciencia, sabiduría, lealtad, fuerza de espíritu, y amor;

¡Oh, quien pudiera mejor merecerse su reposo eterno;

Tú, sabiendo que nos diste la merced de conocer lo que se significa el ser verdaderamente Mexicano!

Nuestro Hermano, Benito Juárez, que Dios los guarde.

You, famous man, whose countenance evokes brave hearts;

Who are of a figure that makes reference to your humble people;

You, who broke the chains of an enemy that insulted the motherland's honor with his step;

Who called and united the lost, diverse children who wandered without their mother, without their country;

Wheresoever you were, you had no equal, for you inspired millions with your example;

You taught us and shared with us your patience, wisdom, strength of spirit, and love;

Oh, who could better deserve eternal rest than your grace?!;

You, knowing that you gave us the gift of knowing what it is to be truly Mexican!

Our Brother, Benito JJuárez, - may God protect him

ODE TO THE UNSPEAKABLE By: Angelica Ortiz

Everything is happening

Yet I feel nothing

It gives me a feeling that I can't comprehend

It's like eating Asian A sense of fullness

Then hungry tears

Come streaming down my face

Like the winter rain

It's never happy

Just tolerable for a few moments

I don't need help

Or someone there

I'm not alone

Just lost Confused

I don't need to cry for help

Because if I scream any louder I'm going to lose my voice

17 years of torture

No one is there They all lie

To make themselves feel better

I'm still here

Bleeding out

Blood flowing out gently

Never stopping

I look down and there's nothing there

Just as

What people say about this

'It's not there

It's all in your head' That's the point

It's there though

Yelling, Insulting

It won't go away

It acts like a blaring siren yelling about a tornado in sight

All I can do is wait For the horrid wind

With a chance that I'm going to be fine or killed

Never knowing for sure

That's what my world is now
